Burn in? - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

I've been using my Pixel 2 (not the XL), which uses the Samsung made OLED panel if I'm not wrong, for a week. I purchased it on the 4th of November 2017, and have been using it as per normal. I purchased the smaller Pixel as I am very nit-picky and didn't want to put up with the display issues of the XL. However, I decided to test the burn in a week later, so I loaded a grey image and to my surprise, there is what looks like burn in of the nav bar buttons and a very faint line where the nav bar background meets with the UI in normal operation. I'm not sure if this is a case of image retention but it is slightly disappointing. I may return it and pay a little more for a Note 8 or get a U11.
I will point out that when the phone is in an app where the nav bar is black and the keys are white, after being in that app for even 20 seconds and I switch to a grey image, there is a obvious outline of the nav bar area, but it subsides after a while. This is probably a case of image retention, but there is still a faint line left after leaving the image on for more than 2 minutes.
I was wondering if anyone else has this issue, and is it normal for OLED phones with software navigation keys to have this issue this quickly? I previously had a Galaxy S7 which had only slight burn in around the status bar after 1.5 years.
Thoughts?

Well the U11 uses an LCD, which certainly won't have this (and is cheaper than the Pixel where I am).
A lot of that sounds like image retention to me rather than burn-in (which is permanent). I don't see anything like that on mine, which I've been using for about 3 weeks now (5-7 SOT/day typically), and wouldn't expect to that quickly. But any and every OLED device seems to have a few examples that show burn-in quickly, including Samsung flagships, so it's possible that you've been unlucky.

Yeah, I was thinking about the U11 because of the LCD, even though an OLED is nicer IMHO. Nice to be reassured that it should be ok, the Pixel has an amazing camera which I mainly got it for. I'll see how it goes, if it gets worse I'll probably exchange it, this has been the most rock solid Android device I've ever had out of the box. :good:

S8+ AMOLED Display Quality (Red Tint Issue) - worse as previous Samsung devices

Hello fellow XDA members,
In the past I started some threads regarding Samsung AMOLED display quality, especially for the Note devices.
Please see here if you are interessted:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/note4-amoled-screen-quality-t2906365
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2463786
Now, with the S8+ (and the S8, the problem is the same), even the media recognized the display problems, known as "red tint", just google for it!
Samsung tells the people that this is due to wrong settings, and/or the adaptive display setting turned on! THIS IS NOT THE CASE!!!
I got 2 pieces of S8+ today, and both displays are not OK. One screen has the red tint issue, but only on the upper half of the screen.
The other device has no red tint, but is generally darker and looks more "washed out" and has a slight yellow tint.
So again the display lottery is back, it is only "luck of the draw" if you get a decent screen or not!!!
If you do not believe me just compare a few devices beneath each other with the exact same display settings. Turn adaptive display off, then go into the dialer and type *#0*#, with this you ensure the brightness settings are the same and you have the same sceen content on both devices. You will notice that every single device has a different screen quality (tint, evenness, ...)
What do you say? Acceptable or not?
With all of us over at the tmobile shipping thread we've been waiting and crying and hoping that we get our devices early....and then when we finally got our devices ****ty things like red tint leaves a sour taste in our mouths..sad really, samsung already made this device feel rushed with all the Bixby and fingerprint scanner awkward positioning and what did we do after the note 7 debacle? We forgave these fools...and now this?....i do feel bad for those that actually paid full retail price for these expensive devices and to unbox and realize the screen is pink...that right there is not how to say forgive us for our mistakes instead a huge f u to all the customers who were unlucky enough to get such a horrible display color....but I will say I won the lottery because out of the box my s8plus came out nice no red pinkish tint whites are white...but why am I still pissed? Because my note 4 was the same whites were white and then after a year or so my eyes were fixed on a strange color that was taking up half of the screen that came out of nowhere...so yes I will be forever paranoid with sammys displays now....if my s8plus came in like that I don't think I would've came back....but then again I'm here lol
Settle down guys, this will likely be fixed with a future fw given the attention its gotten, this is pretty simple for samsung to fix actually, all samsung needs to do is what video games have been doing for years; offer the user an option to calibrate based a sample image. Once thats in, the presets can be established based off of those generated values from the user selection.
It seems like they will indeed need to implement a fix of this sorts, because it does seem the displays hue varys from device to device.
Anyways, for the most part, I hardly notice it and it seems even, and the more I look at it, the more i can't make sense out of it? Seems to play tricks on my eyes... lol.
Beautiful phone and display though!

This is a hardware problem, a real software fix IS NOT POSSIBLE!!!
Samsung can only try to cammo the problem with increasing the range of the color-sliders in the display settings, so that you can turn down red more then now. But this wont fix that the red tint is NOT EVEN ACROSS THE DISPLAY!!
What else proves that this is a hardware error is that if you put 5 devices next to each other (with the exact same settings), each of them will look different in regard to screen quality! Believe me, I know what I'm talking about, see my previous threads regarding that!
I agree that it should be even otherwise you may have a hardware problem but my concern is your criticism has more to do with amoled in gerneral and what we are observing is a consequence of the tech used. Samsung is also pushing the boundries here too with the display tech so the norms for amoled to compare to may not even apply anymore. And your comment to my comment regarding masking the problem, there is a reason why every display on the planet has picture settings.. right? No 2 displays are exactly the same...
I just went through the crap with my Surface Pro 4 too, trust me, they are a good example of no 2 displays alike, must have went though at least 11 Surface Pro 4 on my mission for perfection display and I had to give up in the end because truth is, its still an awesome device!

Absolutely unacceptable reasoning. They shouldn't be putting out a product if the "early batches" are DEFECTIVE
Obviously it's a QC problem, which they seem to have some fairly big issues with, over and over.. They will lose customer faith if they keep doing this ****

Perhaps but then again why did you buy a phone from samsung in the first place?.....
I was in the Samsung store yesterday for the launch party. They had 3 S8+ on display next to eachother. Each was running the exact same retail mode, showing the exact same content at the exact same time.
One display was white, one was red hued, and one was pee yellow.
(No, it wasn't display calibration settings, I checked).
There are definitely quality control issues.

And which of the 3 do you have?
I noticed a slight pinkish tint when the shipping screen protector was on, but looks ok without it.
Something slightly different this year is there seems to be a pink tinge on all four sides of the display (top, bottom, left and right). It's a very consistent along the sides of the screen and very noticeable, a few people here have also noticed it: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/help/red-tint-screen-t3592335
So it's not just another pink/yellow/blue/green spotty tinge problem, theres now uniformity with the example i've provided.
I've got the S8+ and the screen is not red at all. The left and right edges if anything have a slight blueish tone to them but I believe this to be the effect of the screen curving to the sides distorting the colour (Colour shift?).
Unless you have bought one and have the problem with it, you have no right to complain.

Mine had a very slight pink tinge when I got it, at the very top and bottom (maybe half the status bar thickness), and it's since gone way.
The over all display color was a little too warm for my liking, so I knocked the red slider down to half, and now it's fine.
Got me and the wife one yesterday from At&t. No red tint and best phone yet. I love it.
My display is freaking beautiful and I love the fingerprint location. I never had any trouble. My finger finds it very naturally

im not tying to be a jerk but just curious what happens when you cycle the --blue light filter-- button in the pull down menu with the wifi, Airplane mode ect.
reason i ask my displays is perfect but with the blue light filter on which is to reduce eyestrain ..then the display is very red
Really did not know they had this till i play around with it

I have an S8+ as per my posts in the other thread, so I have a right to complain.
Firstly, it could well be fixed by software, even if its uneven, HTC had issues with the camera doing this a number of years ago (big red spot in all pictures). It was fixed with software
Secondly, it might disappear with time. AMOLED, OLED and other self lighting technologies (like Plasma in TVs) have a bed in time, where some colour ranges need to burn in. I would suggest a full red screen using a screen tester app for a few hours, to see if it beds in the red.
Guys, I would like to take this device, there is a possibility of having a faded display?

red/yellow tint Uniformity DISPLAYGATE *BE WARNED*

Its still there right out of the box. $800+ for a gorgeous Midnight black T-Mobile Galaxy S8. I swipe down the notification shade to mess with settings and I can't help, but notice the subtle, but very existent, yellowish tint on the top right 1/3rd of my display compared to the slightly reddish bottom 2/3rds.
The white background on the notification is not all white. Any solid color white or grey background and you can notice that there is a yellowish and pinkish hue in certain areas of the display. This is extremely distracting and almost nauseating when reading an article and as you read the white background starts shifting color from yellowish white to a pinkish white.
We had same issues with GS6 and GS7. PANEL LOTTERY! I had to exchange my S7 about 4-5 times in order to get a unit without Screen defects. its 2017 and the S8 has the same damn issue that we've been reporting to Samsung, they don't care because some average consumers don't notice it or assume thats just how the phone is. Well I don't take lightly to defects and anomalies when I'm paying this much. Its very annoying that this SUPER AMOLED display attached to a near $1k price tag lacks the quality assurance it should have. it can't even display a full even white or grey screen.
Time to exchange and make a youtube video about it I suppose. I'll post pictures when I get home from work.

As frustrating as it is its still a very new device to the market all different manufacturers be it a mobile device or something else the first run will always have a 50/50 chance of issues its bound to happen. By no means am I be littling your post all im saying is things as annoying as this is bound to happen. I read somewhere that Samsung will be possibly issuing a software fix for this display issues but I cannot confirm for sure. Today is the official release of the device I did hear that stores are not issuing replacements just yet.

Samsung offers software update to fix red display issue
http://www.zdnet.com/video/samsung-offers-software-update-to-fix-red-display-issue/
This isn't a software issue trust me. It is a fault in the production of the OLED panels. This has been going on for nearly 3 years! They just don't care.
yes and the forthcoming software update fix ,the red color will be on zero exactly like if you do it yourself in the menu.
If the screen is uniformly red then it can be masked with a green filter applied to the entire screen. There are 3rd party apps that can do this such as ScreenEqualizer.
Non-uniformity is a different issue altogether and can't be fixed or masked. I have it on both my S6E and my S8. The S6 release dubbed the issue "pink-gate" and it attracted much more attention but ultimately nothing was done about it.
I thought that after the Note 7 flop they won't risk anything like this but i can confirm that my mighty black S8+ has this defect too. Frustrating because i was unlucky with the S4 and S5 although the replaced the screen for a great on each device and after several unsuccessfull attempt but last year the S7E was absolutely flawless so i was optimistic for the S8, especially regarding the note 7, that is MUST be a flafless, highest quality product but it failed miserably.
I had these issues on my S6, N5, and N7. You cant correct a screen if the color issue is not uniform. I had to return every single phone multiple times to get an acceptable screen.
What i find is weird is, my Pixel Xl was absolutly perfect, and im pretty sure they source their screens from samsung.

Screen burn-in

Given that this phone has an AMOLED screen, has anybody had a lot of burn-in on the screen?
If so, what is it, and how bad is it? I am thinking of buying a Pixel, but will most likely keep it for a number of years, and want to know what I can expect.
Cheers.

I don't think screen burn in is as bigger issue as it was a few years ago. I've only had the device for about 9 months but there are zero signs of burn in.
I remember having an early Galaxy S model and that was burning in after a few months.
I have heard of people having burn in with the pixels display after like 3 months (which i find hard to believe) but no burn in here.
Tbh first generation of Pixels are known for having screen burns. It's pretty common and not only with Pixel but with all phones with AMOLED screens.

are you planning to run a custom rom? if you are then there's a carbonrom developed feature that some roms have adapted such as Dirty Unicorns which has screen burn-in protection that shifts the pixels on the screen ever so slightly and you can set it to how often it does that just to prevent burn-in. That's how samsung does it on their newer devices. You won't notice anything at all. I have had my pixel since fabruary and haven't noticed any burn-in. Burnin happens if you have something static on your amoled screen over time. Anyway I'm rocking Dirty Unicorns rom which has adapted carbonroms feature and it's been great, not something I think about really but a great safety. Wish google had implemented it as default. (edit: the feature is called smart pixels and within that option there's an option called screen burn-in protection).
Most burn-in on AMOLED or POLED screens can be seen along the navigation bar. Part of the problem is Google using a black bar down there so those pixels don't get as much burn as the rest of the screen. It bothers some people more than others. Running brightness too high also doesn't help.

Screen uniformity worth a replacement?

I got my 7 pro 2 days ago and noticed it has a few screen uniformity issues. The left corners are the brightest and there's a darker area in the lower middle part of the screen when tested using 1% gray test( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5PCCEZ1KgY&t=214s ) on 0% brightness in a pitch black room. If I bump the brightness to 60-70% the gamma seems to go up a lot making the brighter parts more obvious relative to the darker ones. My best camera around here is the mate 20 lite's so can't take any useful photos .
I know 1% gray is really agressive and most phones show only black when set to it but seeing that no one complains about it makes me think I got a bad panel. Would it be worth a replacement? I'm afraid I might get a refurbished one with scratches and whatnot. How are your 7 pro's in regards to uniformity?
my 7 pro also got uniformity issue.. The top portion is showing faded color than the bottom portion.
such screen issues are common with OLEDs, especially under certain circumstances like the one you descriped
I wouldn't bother with a replacement, you could get a slightly better or a slighty worse screen, it's like a lottery
Yeah, it's normal.
The quality of the displays given to OnePlus are not the same quality that they put in their own phones, so chances are the replacement will be similar or worse.
Samsung and Apple phones are usually perfect though.

[Q] Note 10/10+ Dynamic Screen

Cant seem to find anything concrete info about the display. Not sure if any of you got the s/note series prior to the note 10, but the screen on the note 10 is different. I noticed the screen color (especially on white backgrounds) shifts quite strong. What i mean by that is noticeable to the point i can see when it shifts color, unlike how iphone does it gradually on their screens. I thought the dynamic screen just means less bluelight?
so my questions are
is it just me who notice this?
is this part of the tech? if not then i have a faulty panel?
I have the note 10.

I usually notice stuff, but with Note10 I didn't or it didn't bother me at all. Color shift meaning when you tilt the phone or under different lighting?
99% of people says I'm just whining over nothing but I'm extremely sensitive to this color shift when I tilt the device a little bit. I love samsung amoled screens but I hate this color shift phenomena and it's usually a lottery. My first S10+ was awful but I had to do a warranty claim for other reasons and second S10+ has an almost perfect screen (only very minimal shift to blue).
I ordered 3 note 10+ to avoid this (and planning on selling 2 for profit) but all three had way worse screen than my S10+ in terms of color shifting, they turn extremely red/pink if I tilt them a little bit during normal use, they also have washed out, non uniform. gray (OneUI night mode) while on the S10+ it looks almost completely black and uniform, oh well.

I mean does the dynamic amoled screen shift colors or white balance like how it does on iPhones with their true tone display.
Cause I often find my self seeing the white balance shifting to red or green when I move to different lighting areas.
I assume its the brightness changing that may have resulted changing the white balance. Maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me. I sometimes see text closer to red than what or yellow (with blue light filter on)

Yea I was wondering is it a defect. Read above I don't think it's a feature. Again could be my eyes playing tricks on me. Funny how I didn't notice this on previous galaxy phones. Including the s10.
If it's only happening on the dynamic mode(I'm thinking your saying auto mode), why use it all. Dynamic/ auto means just that, it will and is going to shift depending on ambient light. Manually set it, and forget it.
But if you have set it manually(or even the auto) I would say it's more a situation that 'your eyes' made need something special(I don't know how iPhone shifts differ, as I haven't worked on one in a few years), and, it's not a fault of the device, as most people don't have this level of sensitivity or seeing.
