[Q] Bricked already? Stuck in bootloader - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

EDIT
Turns out I was two versions of adb/fastboot behind instead of one. Ignore me!
Hey all,
Yesterday I went to flash the factory image on my Pixel 2 that was running unlocked and rooted with Magisk and Snoke kernel, but it failed while trying to erase the cache partition. I found out that I wasn't using the latest fastboot because the Pixel doesn't use a cache partition so I updated and tried again, and the flash-all script seemed to work fine. But when it finished an rebooted the phone, I was back at the bootloader. I tried the start, recovery, and download mode buttons but they all sent me back to the bootloader. If I turn the phone off and plug it into a charger, the charging icon will come up on the screen for a second and then send me to the bootloader.
I tried flashing the files manually, but the process was hit or miss and would either hang forever or return a generic error (either a generic load error or check device console).
I can't boot the alpha TWRP because it returns a generic load/authentication error and quits.
At this point the flash-all will go through the motions and seem to work every time now, but when it reboots I'm back at square one. I can lock and unlock the bootloader and confirm it on the phone screen, I can flash the bootloader, boot, and system images, I can erase those images, I seem to be able to do everything I can usually do in there, but it's almost like my computer says it's working, but the phone isn't actually doing anything. Short of an RMA I'm not entirely sure what to do. Does anyone have any insight?

I'm new to pixels phones but i read about the slot a and slot b maybe you have to change the boot to other slot?
There is a tool in development section maybe it can help u some how.

I set the active slot to b and rebooted and I got the warning message that the bootloader was unlocked and to continue, which brought me to the boot logo for a little bit, and then back to the bootloader.

Maybe you need to flash the stock image again in the second slot?

I have faced the same issue and reflash the factory image do not work, is there anyone resolve this?

[Q] stalled in recovery mode

I have a problem that probably has an easy solution. I ran Motopocalpse to try to unlock my bootloader on my Droid Razr Maxx HD and it failed to unlock the bootloader because I have update 9.30.1. I found out later that it does not work on any OTA update after 9.18.
Now, when I start up the phone, it goes into a black screen with white letters (I assume that this is a custom recovery mode that was left my Motopocalypse). The top of the screen has:
AP Fastboot Flash Mode (S)
It also tells me the “device is LOCKED” and "Fastboot Reason: Flash failure" and "invalid image size for partition recovery".
But it stops here. I can connect the phone to the computer with USB debugging enabled and enter:
./fastboot.osx continue
and it will start up, or sometimes I can do a very odd key press to get it to start up (though this doesn't always work).
My question: how can I get this to bypass this new opening trainwreck? Is there something to delete or change? Some way to reflash the recovery? I have tried wiping the cache and factory reset to no avail.
Thank you for any pointers you might give. I have not found anything in the forums.

I think the boot/adb whatever needs to be reset by a successful flash. Search : sticky bit. Try stock recovery from the xml. But not sure as I am unlocked & locked boots are fussy about fastboot objects.
Edit logo is allowed
Flash from fastboot http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2185777&d=1376384595
Unzip & put run from windows. Or just flash the logo.bin inside. I use Parallels Desktop on osx.
fixed!

[Q] Can't boot, recovery keeps dissapearing

I have searched and tried different things but I'm getting nowhere. I have been running Purity rom on this for a while but when I woke up this morning, I found my screen black and only being able to boot to the bootloader and and google screen (which quickly goes away and goes black again). When I tried to go to recovery at first I believe it was just shutting off. Now it goes to a light black screen.
The first thing I did was flashed the factory image .bat file and everything seemed to go ok but when trying to go to recovery after it went to the light black screen. I turned it off and it booted to the Google screen then off again. Then it booted to the google screen and it froze that way. I can always get it back to the bootloader screen and got it to recovery once by flashing TWRP again using ADB.
TWRP opened once and I tried to do a factory reset but it couldn't find anything and couldn't mount to anything. I got it back to the bootloader again but the recovery has disappeared again. I tried to flash the factory image again but it definitely failed this time.
Please help.

Might be bad eMMC or something?
when youre flashing recovery, which command are you using.. fastboot boot recovery recoveryname.img or fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img?

Lock your bootloader then reboot to fastboot. If the lock state remains locked try LG flashtool. Link in my signature. If the lock state reverts back to unlocked, then you have to rma your device. If that is the case can you check the variant text in fastboot for me? There should be D820 or D821 and after there should be a letter E or H in (). I want to know that letter in the (). Thanks.

Hey I'm using "fastboot flash recovery recovery.img" and that's what I've used in the past. I've had a fully functioning rom with fully functioning recovery for a while until yesterday.

Ok thanks I'll try this and check the text in fastboot after work today. Thanks for the responses guys.
After reading some more last night I'm afraid it's an emmc problem but I like to be proven wrong sometimes.

I actually have that thread open on my computer. It was my next attempt of repair before starting the thread late last night. Thanks for the suggestion I will certainly try it.
Update: I tried pushing Philz recovery to the phone which seemed to work fine until I selected go to recovery mode. It just went back to that barely light black screen. I'll try again when I get home. Going to try Bitdomo's advice about locking bootloader first.

Out of curiosity what's the reason for using two brands, or were they just available so they were used?

Bitdomo I'm trying the Flashtool but it's staying at 0% on the firmware update and nothing is popping up on computer or in Device Manager. Had no connection issues prior to the brick or with adb/fastboot. My Ports aren't evening showing at all in DM even if I select show hidden devices.

Ok so it stayed locked so that's a start. I'm back in download mode again but it's staying at 0% and nothing on computer.
I tried to re-download the factory images and flash again using adb. It failed again. Here's a picture of what happened:
Unzip the zip and use manual flash commands. Clikc the link in my signature and read my "adb and fastboot. What is it?" thread of you're unsure of the commands.

You have "remote: flash write failure" error. It means your emmc (internal storage) is broken and you cannot modify the data on it. You have to rma your device.
Just for matter of research can you enter to fastboot and post the variable line here?
Mine is: hammerhead D821(H) 16GB

You should be able to if you managed to lock the bootloader. The name of the zip does not came into my mind which you have to flash, but you have to do it with the adb sideload command because you cant copy anything to your phone, or use adb push command to push it to the "/" folder because it is mounted to the ram which you can write not like your storage . If you bought your phone from google it does not matter you have tamper flag set to 1.

Ok thanks. I haven't quite figured out the adb sideload function yet. I tried doing it through TWRP but it just sits there and does nothing after selecting. Maybe I'm trying the wrong thing. I got my phone from T-Mobile so I'll need to solve this. Thanks for the help.
This phone is being a real a-hole. I'm trying to boot to stock recovery but it just sits on a screen with a really big android with wiggling antennae. I pressed up+power many times but it stayed that way. So I tried booting to TWRP again and it did but went immediately to an "OpenRecoveryScript," had a little bar at the bottom for a while with some other stuff on the screen, then turned off.
I tried stock recovery again and it went to the little dead android this time but still nothing when I press up+power.

Nexus 5 Stuck On 'Formatting /Data' After Factory Image Flashing

Nexus 5 stuck on 'formatting /data' screen after factory image flashing
Sorry for the long post. I just want to ensure I am providing all relevant history.
I have a Nexus 5 (Hammerhead) 32gb device, stock with no rooting. I mean, I had never done anything special on it ever.
1. Recently I started getting Google Play Store related problems, first 194 error and then couple of days back 495 (I think). After trying switching on/off, clearing cache and some other similar ways to fix this, I decided to do a factory reset :crying:
2. I backed up all my data, and followed the documented steps for factory reset. The phone got stuck on 'erasing'. After waiting for over 24 hours, I finally figured out that this 'erasing' is not going to complete, ever.
3. So I again did some research and figured that I should do a fastboot recovery. Tried that with no difference. Recovery again took me to 'erasing' screen.
4. Some more research and then I decided to flash a factory image using ADB. I was (and still am) a complete newbie, so first I figured out what was ADB and how to get to it. After completing the installation, I found out Nexus 5 factory images. There was no mention of which ones to chose, so I just picked up the latest one.
This is what I really followed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRp5jJO34PE
5. Having learnt my lessons, I read the flashing instructions many times and also watched some videos 3-4 times. Once I was confident that no more information was going to be had, and the phone was unlocked (fastboot oem unlock) I went ahead with the flashing. I did it step by step - bootloader, radio and they recovery image. The last one failed.
6. I did some more research and found a method which told me to unzip the last image and flash the component images one by one. I did. Success! However, the phone did not reboot by itself as the guide said it would. So I tried to boot it manually.
7. I did not get the dead android with red exclamation mark. Instead, I got an alive android with gears whirring on its tummy and back. Pressing power + vol-up button told me that this was the 'formatting /data' screen. I am unable to get past this screen. I am supposed to get to a screen where I can wipe data and cache etc. But I cannot get to it.
8. I have tried to wait it out (16 hours) and tried flashing the images again. Ultimately, I end up here.
9. I am unable to find any answers on what to do if stuck on this screen. So this is the end? Is my phone bricked? Is there anything else I can try? Will trying TWRP way help or is that just another way to same failure?
I would appreciate if there is anybody out there who can help me get my phone working again, or point me to a thread which helps me do it. Thanks!
Just wait it took me 5 hours of waiting
Try flashing Android 4.4.4 and see if that will boot. If that does not work try installing a custom recovery like TWRP, and do the wipes from there.

Thanks. I was thinking of trying TWRP anyway. I will try this today.
How does one select which image to flash? Is it always the latest one? In this case, how do I know which one is Android 4.4.4, and why are you recommending this specific one? I had purchased this phone in 2013 Feb (I think). So is there any specific image to be selected or the latest one is always to be picked?

UPDATE: Flashing 4.4.4. did not work. I again got the 'formatting /data' screen again instead of the phone booting up. However, the formatting screen with the android with diamond circling in the tummy also has a blue line below, possibly a progress bar. It is not growing though, just there... sizzling. Pressing power+vol-up buttons shows me that this is 'formatting /data' screen.
Will try custom recovery from TWRP now.

Reboot your phone into bootloader and download latest hammerhead 5.1.1 from Google. Extract everything and then extract the images. First use these commands
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase userdata
Then fastboot flash everything including bootloader.
Use this as a guide http://androidforums.com/threads/guide-how-to-flash-a-nexus-factory-image-manually.706533/
Then after finished reboot phone and leave it alone it will boot right up in 5-10 mins no need to go to recovery. In future don't format partitions.
try this: fastboot format cache

Sorry for the late update. I was traveling over the weekend.
Thank you so much! Your post solved my issue. I wish I had this advice earlier!
First time it did not work, with reboot leading to a blank screen. Next time I following the guide completely, following the order in which different images were flashed. The phone went into boot animation for 5.1.1 and finally booted up, with all 32gb storage available.
Thanks again!

How long did you leave at that? Sometimes it may take long time depending upon the storage size of your phone. Usually between 20 to 40 mins.

Is it normal that my phone shows this Android animation after I flushed new factory image? Why is it trying to still "Format /data..." after new image flush?
Is there any other way to flush android factory image from scratch? I already used nexus root toolkit and fastboot

I'm really sorry that you are stuck in this mess. It is normal but more than 1 hour is way too much. I'm not sure about the causes, but you can try two more things and see how it goes. One is to use flash-all.bat script. If that didn't work then you can flash a custom ROM like Chroma and then try flashing the stock ROM.

Pixel 2 Magisk Bug won't take pin

Pixel 2 XL is soft bricked at the moment and I can't for the life of me think of what I need to do to recover it. I unlocked my bootloader and rooted when I switched to Pie, (I saw people we're already able to use Android pay on a rooted device again and I just couldn't help myself.) I installed twrp accidentally tried to flash TWRP not realizing I needed to temporary boot it and pushing the zip over erasing the recovery I proceeded to just fastboot it and carry on with the normal procedure with my phone. after getting Magisk installed I had my phone all set up until the next time I turned it on and back off again It said I forgot my PIN which I know I didn't I think this was because a glitch with smartlock I just setup so I go to my recovery and wipe the Dalvik cache, cache, Internal storage, and data and low and behold my phone bootloops never making past the final stage before it gets to the lockscreen. I go to Fastboot screen on my phone and my mac can't list my phone as a device in adb and now I am having issues getting back into recovery which I think might be because I am on the stock kernel my Fastboot screen on my phone says Product Name - Taimen, Variant - MSM USF:SAMSUNG(64gig) DDR:SAMSUNG, Bootloader version - TM220j, Baseband version - g899800253-1805232234, my Serial number, Serure boot - Yes, Device status - Unlocked, Vart console - Disabled, HW version - rev_10
I can't get it to stop bootlooping and just turn off.

Try flashing the stock boot.img with Fastboot. That might get you out of it. Since you did all the wiping I can't say for sure. However, when you were at the point where it wouldn't take your password, that's all that needed to be done. I ran into the same thing. It's a Magisk bug. Magisk gets flashed to the boot partition so flashing the factory boot.img will fix it. TWRP also gets flashed to the boot partition so if you flashed it too, flashing a factory boot image will get rid of that too. ADB won't see the phone while it's in fastboot mode. You need to use "fastboot devices". You can download a factory image if you don't have one and extract the boot.img from it. Put it in the folder your fastboot is in, and then open a command prompt (terminal? I'm not a MAC person) from that folder and type "fastboot flash boot boot.img" (without the quotes). Make sure you use download the factory image that's the same as what you currently have installed on the phone.

I stopped my endless bootloop! Now it says my device is corrupt and cannot be trusted and may not work properly when I tried to start it I couldn't get past the google screen. When I plug it into charge now it doesn't automatically going into a bootloop that can only be stoped by going into the fastboot mode or running out of battery, but the the charging symbol on the screen won't go away. I might have wiped system when I was in TWRP when I couldn't boot back after the first wipe. And I accidentally tried fastbooting Telstra img first. Anyway to get past this white Google screen? Also when I trey to go to recovery now it's the android laying on it's back with a red triangle and it says no command. Should I execute the flash-all script?
Downloaded the stock img files and ran the flash all .sh and now I am back in Android ready to mess something up again I could not thank you enough for your help I am so happy right now

Glad to hear you got it working again. As for the recovery screen that say no command, that't the way it works with the stock recovery. When you see that screen, press and hold power and volume up. That will get you into recovery. If you happen to try rooting again and get stuck in a bootloop or some such thing, just flash the stock boot image.. That should get you going again.

leagoo t5 wont boot after unlocking bootloader

Had a bad idea this morning and decided to try to root the phone, leagoo t5. The last time Im going to go messing with a phone that wasnt broken! after spending 10hrs trying to sort it! I downloaded adb tools and and twrp. I unlocked the bootloader with fastboot and installed twrp. However when I rebooted the phone it just booted straight into twrp. I cant get it to boot normally. I reinstalled the firmware but it will still not boot. I can get into recovery and factory modes but thats it. what can I do? Thanks

Have you tried factory resetting in recovery?

Yes I did. No Joy. When I power on I just get the leagoo logo coming on and off repeatedly. Pressing the power button then will not turn the phone off again. I can switch it off by pressing vol- and pwr together though.
Is the problem caused by unlocking the bootloader with fastboot or that the firmware I installed is not suiting? Rebooting the phone after unlocking the bootloader before reflashing the firmware caused the leagoo logo to come on and off repeatedly accompanied by this message in very small text "Orange State - Your device has been unlocked and can't be trusted, Your device will boot in 5 seconds". After flashing the firmware with Sp Flash Tool this message is not being shown. Does reflashing firmware undo the action of unlocking the bootloader?
What your are describing is a bootloop. It sounds like the device can not find the system kernel to boot to. Did you boot the device after unlocking but before doing anything else?
Where did you get the TWRP recovery from?
Isn't this a mediatek chipset? If so, I think you need to use SP Flash Tool*to install.
I would look for a stock ROM for this device to revert to.
I'm not experienced on mediatek devices, but maybe @SubwayChamp could help.

Then to unlock bootloader is not normal that Android refuses to boot normally but when you flash a custom recovery or modify other partition this usually could happen so either or both you have to do a factory resetting/format data as @ktmom said or/and flash a kind of DM-verity for your device, this last avoids that bootloader checks the integrity of the partitions and can boot normally to system.
The warning message is normal then to unlock bootloader and reflashing the stock rom doesn´t relock it, you have to relock it at similar way that you unlocked it via fastboot command, most commom is "fastboot oem relock" but there are other variants and keep in mind that you have to return completely to stock before to apply it.

I relocked the boot loader with the command "fastboot flashing lock". small white text dialogue on phone screen stated bootloader was locked successfully. rebooted phone then and it was still stuck in the boot loop. For a few seconds in between the leagoo logo a strange circular graphic was displayed on the phone with word "erasing" under it. What does this mean?
Can you tell me more about how to flash DM-verity?

Ok, then to relock bootloader I guess that you did successfully boot to system again, right?
When you unlocked bootloader first then device is formatted to avoid a new user can access to the user´s data and when you relock it again the same happens.
As for DM-verity, newer devices strictly since nougat can´t boot to system after any partition was modified like happened when you flashed a custom recovery on it, here is when DM-verity can be useful, is used to avoid bootloader checks the integrity and allow a modified device can perform a reboot and more custom actions not officially permitted. You had to flash it through a custom recovery, sometimes flashing only Magisk is enough but not always.
You *might* be able to use this universal dm-verify script. It can be flashed only in a custom recovery and I'm not certain that is available to you.

Good news and bad news! I got the phone to boot! I reinstalled twrp and the "magisk","no verity opt encrypt" and "disable dm verity" zips from the ext sdcard with fastboot. Twrp stated the zips installed ok but there were also some red line failure lines in the dialogue as they were being installed. I rebooted the phone via fastboot but this just resulted in it booting direct to twrp as before. I tried normal boot from twrp but it still booted straight back to twrp. I then tried selecting normal boot from the fastboot, normal, recovery option menu accessed on the Leagoo T5 by powering off the phone and then pressing the pwr and vol+ buttons together but this still resulted in it booting straight to twrp. I then decided to uninstall twrp by flashing the stock firmware recovery image to try to boot from stock recovery. I did same and rebooted from fastboot and it booted to system.
The bad news is there is an imei failure message and the sim is not connecting to the network.I googled imei failure and saw that its can happen when firmware is changed. I installed the "mobileuncle" app but according to a youtube video I watched, when I tap "Engineer Mode" there should be 2 further options available, one being MTK Mode. I am only getting one option "Engineering Mode (Android) which when I select just results in being returned to the previous menu. please say this is not a major problem!
@pcfreeze you quoted me, but as I said earlier, I'm not experienced with mediatek devices. You'd be better off quoting @SubwayChamp

It could be many reasons why device didn´t boot to system. Then to flash it you had to format data + flash DM-verity. Also is possible that this TWRP version is not completely suitable for your device or is unable to mount/unmount partitions correctly, you have to check from where you downloaded it and if some users are experiencing similar issues with it.
As per you IMEI lost, better is ever take a backup of the NVRAM through TWRP before to go further then it´ll be easy to recover it. In almost all firmwares for mediatek devices you´ll fnd inside the zips SPFT and SN Writer that is to recover your IMEI. Your IMEI is not really lost only got actually covered by blank codes due to a bad/incorrect flashing/wrong sequence firmware, so be careful what you do with Mobile Uncle tool if you´re not experimented with otherwise you´ll lost permanently.

I got into engineering mode via dialer code. CDS option was missing from connectivity. I installed https://m.apkpure.com/cds-mobile/com.doubleapaper.cds.cds_mobile but CDS is still missing from engineering mode
