[Some Questions] Rooting the Z3 nowadays - Xperia Z3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well then,
I've managed to get a used Z3 as a replacement for my old SGY Duos. Definitively a real improvement
Now i want to get root - becoming the REAL owner of this phone. So i've asked google - and got soo much information, that I dont know, which solution would be the best one / up to date one. The D6603 got the latest Build .291 onto it.
Questions:
A: Which one is the most recent root method for this device? (Ideally without downgrading and such ...)
B: Will I loose DRM Keys in the process of rooting or won't these get lost until unlocking the Bootloader?
Couldn't figure out ... either too much or too less information out there.
Thanks, folks!

A: Through unlocking bootloader and installing TWRP or other custom recovery
B: Do a TA Backup

I was able to unlock, now I can't

Sup guys, probably you've read a lot of these kind of threads, but please take a minute to check my situation
Some data first:
Samsung Focus, software version 7.0 (7004), zune is installed on Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit edition.
Sooo, I was able to do all that unlock wizardry, and sideload a few apps.
Then, suddenly the unlock tool stopped working, showing me the typical "connect to usb and open Zune, you retard" stuff.
Then I notice all the apps stopped working (Microsoft has revoked this app, please uninstall blah blah we're evil blah).
So I read that I needed to unlock my phone again to make the apps work once again.
and there I went, reinstalled zune, run the unlocker in compatiblity mode, reset the phone, and still the unlocker shows me the stupid alert.
Any advice? Can't even add my custom ringtones!
ALSO: Is there another way to unlock the phone?
Search for prevent wp7 from relocking, its easy and only takes a few steps
Sent from my HD7 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
Yep, I'm totally doing that, but I have to unlock again first
I have the same problem ):, any solution?
HEY! fjosep,

I did that yesterday and no luck :/
Have you tried this method? Worked for me when I ran into the same issue. Did this and then made it to where it won't relock.

I'll try it when I get back,
Ok, so I found 2 step-by-step methods, but both ask for the phone to be unlocked. And that's my problem
I had a similar problem where i could unlock easily, but one day, i just couldnt unlock my phone again (pre-nodo at the time)
So i just hard reset my phone back to the day i bought it, and it worked straight off again.... never had any problems with it after that...
The hard-reset is the one you do with the power button, the camera and the volume -?
I tried that and no luck
Have you tried unlocking from another computer? I don't know exactly how or why (probably related to me screwing with the Windows registry,) but the Chevron unlock stopped working on my laptop but would run fine on my desktop computer.
If the unlock works from another computer, apply the fix to prevent it from re-locking ASAP
As I said in another thread, was trying for a long time to unlock, couldn't.
I'm not very sure how it happened (via updating the phone to NoDo or else) but my Zune got updated and I couldn't unlock.
What I did is uninstall Zune, reset and reinstalled 4.7 with no internet connection. It can unlock now. Try this, maybe it works for you.
Thanks both, I'll try what you say, very good advices here

try:
go to c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\ and edit the host file and erase all windowsphonedeveloper links
thanks, but still no luck

XT925 bricked! Need help

Hey Guys,
So I got a very weird situation here, I have my XT925 from Telcel. Several months ago I unlocked the bootloader and started playing around with ROMs. All of them worked fine.
A couple of days ago I flashed the SFR ROM: SFR Vodafone France Version: 9.8.0Q-97-XT925_VQU-18 FULL.
The flash went fine I loaded the 4.1.1 JB and immediately got the OTA alert. Since I had already tested and succeded doing OTA with unlocked BL. I said fine let's do it. It downloaded the 50 MB or so. Restarted to the default recovery, since this was a brand new flash, no CWM yet. Started upgrading and at the middle of the whole thing disaster occured!
The phone restarted and it couldn't get pass the fastboot. I get "update gpt_main version failed" and "failed to hab check for gpt_backup: 0x35"
The weirdest thing of it all is that now the fastboot claims that my bootloader is locked! It went magically after trying to OTA from UNLOCKED to LOCKED!
So this is what's really killing me, I've tried flashing all different versions of Stock ROMs, all via RSD Lite 6.1.4. They all come back with error. I tried removing not only the getvar line but also the 2nd and 3rd line after it but nothing.
And one more thing I said if the device is suddenly locked why not trying to unlock it again, and the weird thing is that if I request the "get_unlock_data" via fastboot it will come back with "Could not get unlock data!"
So I'm completely lost! What can I do know????
Any help will be appreciated!

SOLVED! Quick summary
Here's a quick summary for you non spanish readers!
So it seems that during the OTA the upgrade failed and due to this my bootloader appeared as LOCKED. So this meant that I had to treat my RAZR HD as locked, and flash a newer full version.
So I downloaded the latest Retail BR as suggested by juanpa123, thanks again man!
With the latest retail BR zip and RSD Lite 6.1.4 at hand I removed the "getvar" line from the XML, flashed and boom! Retail version flashed without issues! :victory:
Also once restored I went back into fastboot and my bootloader is again showing up as UNLOCKED. I already reflashed CWM through fastboot just fine!
Same problem... no solution.
Hi there! I came to this post after facing the same issue you guys described. My phone is locked in fastboot screen, showing that the device is locked. I've downloaded the latest firmware from Brasil (Vivo) and tried to flash it using RSD 6.1.4, but it is showing the following error on the screen:
downgraded security version
update gpt_main version failed
preflash validation failed for GPT
... aaaaand, I'm stuck at this point. Apparently I've downloaded the correct version of the firmware for my XT925, but it simply doesn't flash! Any ideas of what I could do?
I'd appreciate any kind of help.
Thanks in advance! :fingers-crossed:
Hey playmolego,
So I can see you have the same issue I had. The problem is you tried to OTA, so now your phone base version is the OTA one, not the latest Brasil vivo one. My advice to you is to download the latest one you can find from the LATAM region. Wether it's Mexico, Brazil or other and hope it's the same or newer as the OTA that failed.
By the way the Vivo you tried to flash failed because it's older than the OTA that failed, therefore it's considered a downgrade, which a locked bootloader will not allow.
So a newer or same version is a must.
Give the Retail Brasil a try:
Branding: Retail Brasil
Version: 9.8.2Q-50-XT925_VQLM-21 FULL
From the Jelly Bean Firmwares thread.
Hopefully you'll find one. Best of luck!
A small improvement
Hey there! Thanks!
I noticed my lazy attempt while re-reading the topic... tee-hee. So I downloaded the correct version (4.1.2 - JB) for Brasil Vivo... and at this moment, I am desperately waiting for RSD to finish the flashing process, but it it stuck for more than one hour on 17/19 flash cdrom "cdrom_signed". The other phases didn't take this long, so I am getting a little bit concerned about what might happen... Any clues on why is it taking soooo long? :T What else could I do?
Thanks in advance!

That's a lot of time indeed!
You could leave it some more time to see if it finishes. I'm not sure what could happen if you force restart the phone. In the meantime I recommend you to download the latest Jelly Bean "Brazil Retail" the one I mentioned on my previous post. It's a bit newer than the Vivo one and it might flash better if the Vivo fails.

So... I held my breath and unplugged the device after 2 hours stuck in the same stage. The phone rebooted and... ta-da! It was healthy again, running the OEM 4.1.2 JB from my carrier. :good:
Maybe it was luck... but at least I've got my Razr HD back (well, to sell it... actually... tee-hee).
Thanks for all the help!
Hi.
I have the same issue, let me tell you my history:
Motorola RAZR HD XT925 Telcel
it was bootloader locked, I unlocked from the Motorola website with the code that it was shown, so it is was bootloader unlocked.
I installed the lastest OEM JB from Brazil, it was working fine, it restarted and I had to configure it again, but suddenly there was an update message so I downloaded it, it rebooted and locked the bootloader again.
I cannot access to the Fastboot menu, normal mode, recovery, and all the menu that appears when the three botton reboot is done.
It says that Device is LOCKED, again, it was unlocked before I installed the brazilian firmware, after OTA update, it was locked again.
I have tried to unlock again the bootloader with the same tool, Motorola ha... 4.0 I do not remember the name exactly.
Batery OK
but the message appears
downgraded security version
update gpt_main version failed
Failed to hab check for gpt_backup
failed to load gpt
CDI Read failure
Fastboot reason Invalid GPT
I have tried to install again the last firmware from Brazil, it was not successful
Also tried to install America Movil 4.1.2, does not work
I am not able to do anything right now.
Does anyone have any idea what should I do?
Thanks!
Hi, so yes your case is the same as ours. The only problem I can see is that you had already flashed the latest JB version available on the Pzyduck thread. The problem with this is that it's obvious that the OTA you downloaded and tried to flash is newer than the newest version on the Jelly Bean thread.
So this means that all the versions available on that thread are older than the OTA that failed, so you won't be able to flash them properly. Your only option is to flash the full version that corresponded to your OTA. Unfortunately I don't know were you can get this. Maybe you can try to contact "Pzyduck" from the JB Firmware threads. He could be of help with a newer version that could work for you.
Another chance is to flash one of the newer european versions, the ones that are V26 or V27 from the thread though I'm unsure if those will flash on a "locked" bootloader from LATAM.

I have the same problem, United States (Verizon), developer edition (xt926). There was an OTA about 4 days ago (11-5-2012) that has bricked my device. I'm looking for this new firmware, but it seems to be too new.
I can try going to Verizon, since they'd have access to the firmware, but what a nightmare.

As far as I understood:
For this moment (maybe later they will find other methods) you'll need CWM/TWRP Recovery to install custom ROM's. To install recovery you don't need root but you need to unlock bootloader. Maybe in the future they will find a way to install Custom Recovery without unlocking the bootloader (Like they did for Defy, but there you couldn't unlock bootloader at all...)

In fairness, the incentive to do so on a device that you can unlock is kind of small so I wouldn't bank on it. Besides, the Defy solution was nasty hack (I had the phone, it was pretty decent hardware for its time but the software was atrocious)

Sony Xperia C3 D2533 Lollipop Hands on Test w/ Root.

Just testing the Sony C3. 470 Lollipop firmware. Only bug is the front camera, too dark when you're taking pictures. Many users are facing this problem but aside from that everything is smooth. As you can see I managed to install root successfully and without problems, managed to get system access or mount as well.
Ps. If you really need the front cam, I suggest don't go for the update, front cam is really bugged at this release.
Feel free to ask, and happy updating!

My experience is that you can not root a Sony equipment that has locked the Bootloader. Perhaps what is shown here, is that installed a recovery and then the SuperSU, however, he can not enter the system partition. It should be then a semi-root.
When you can not unlock a bootloader, then there is the option for someone to build a separate kernel, it should flash after installing a new ROM, using the Flashtool. This usually takes time for someone to develop.

For me, is quite different because i was able to root all the sony devices I had even with the locked bootloader. Seems that some difficults exists to root some devices because of the kernel's date and no one has been able to build a tool to root those devices, just like Giefroot or Xperia Root and also Towelroot. We must wait for a developer´s patience and availabilty to create some tool. until then, we're out of the root process.

Hello, in the end we reached the same: Wait. Yes, I have also had many models Xperia, almost all with locked bootloader (allowed: NO) and all known tools, only Vroot or iRoot (of mgyun.com) has worked for me. Specifically, for the Xperia ZR months passed and nothing, so I found a method for rooting, flashing a modified kernel. Almost a year later, I could see that with iRoot could already rooting effortlessly, like the M2.
Just get to root my phone, I'll post here.

If you can NOT unlock your Bootloader, this post is for you!
I admit, the program from our Chinese friends of Kingroot.net, it works. Root is obtained, but temporarily, since restarting the phone, turns to a semi-root. Okay, it's not the most optimal if you need constant access as root, but at least you can install an advertising blocker like Adaway or Adfree, modify the host system tables and reboot, independent no longer have full root , goodbye to advertising!.
I recommend it until we have a definitive solution to obtain Root.

Latest Update solves the front cam issue !!
Hi Guys.
Hey!....so far....(thinking when we started to find a way to root the C3 with locked bootloader) all exposed here is good news...
And even if the Chinese version work to gain root, even partially, it's still good news...
and...to wait for a more Stable or official way to get the full root....I sort off...think....mmm....is now going to happen soon enough..
Today I got Lollipop for this one (wich was a gift for my mother) so still I need to at least make to work this app: SDCard Caches plus Booster Pro.
Any help on that will be Super appreciated! :good:

Development has been stopped.

Root Pixel 3a xl without wiping it.

I want to gain root access on my phone so I can use screen2auto but I do not wan to wipe it since I have a few things on there that are a pain to get reconfigured, my jobs MFA for one. can this be done? most guides I see show a full wipe.
Rooting won't wipe your phone, it just patches your boot.img
However, you need to be bootloader unlocked to be able to flash anything unofficial, and unlocking the bootloader will wipe your phone. Wiping is a security measure and as far as I know there is no way around that.
