Ok, so this may be a dumb question but it's bugging the heck out of me. I have an all-black wallpaper (home and lock screen), and this black oval appears at times at the bottom of the screen.
It is very obvious when I am entering in my lock screen passcode, looking at recent apps, pulling down the notification bar, etc. It's clearly related to some sort of graphical shadow at the bottom of the screen or something on the new pixels, but I don't know how to make it go away other than change my wallpaper to a picture or something?
Anyone have a hint?

Is this a screenshot? A display issue wouldn't show in a screenshot. I had some odd graphical issues with an all black background on my Pixel 2. It looked like banding across the top and unevenness on the bottom. I switched over to Nova launcher and everything looked great.
I know you mentioned the lockscreen. I don't know if the Pixel launcher could have any graphical effect when the phone is locked. It might be worth trying a different launcher real quick.

It's the pixel launcher yes. The same issue existed on the OG pixel.
The problem is that the pixel launcher applies a drop Shadow to the status bar area to make the icons less likely to blend into your background, same with the navigation bar area.
Sadly the launcher doesn't recognise when these shadows aren't needed, so it appears as a very dark smear of sorts. Samsung used to have the same problem.
I'd suggest downloading Lawn chair from the app store if you need Google integration, or the oneplus launcher if you want something simple but awesome.

Thank you all for your help. Yes, not a display issue but rather graphical. I am using Nova and adjusted about every setting possible to try to change the shadow but no luck! Just hoping someone figured out and had fingers crossed that I could do something with Nova to change it!

Ah I'm sorry to hear that. If a different launcher doesn't work then it sounds exactly like the issue I've had with Samsung phones, even the s8, when it comes to dark wallpapers. The same weird graphical glitches happen on them too.
It sucks because amoled is so damn perfect for black wallpapers

That'll be why then
Google tweaks all their pixel ROMs with specific features, and the top and bottom shading will likely be one of them. Only real answer would be a custom ROM sadly.
Never understood why they and Samsung choose to do this with their device software.

This is a basic public awareness notice: What LCD density does and its drawbacks (the why it does what it does is not addressed b/c I have no clue).
We've all seen or heard about changing the lcd density property in /system/build.prop (and why it is better to edit this through the text editor via root explorer rather than use an app which is shown to be unstable). However, as most of us who have messed with it along with additional rows and columns on the home screens via Launcher Pro and ADW, the big problem is icon overlap or crowding.
Why is this?
I'm still trying to figure out how exactly a LOWER value of LCD Density results in a DENSER display. It doesn't make sense to me. However, it is inescapably linked to letting android keep a 4x4 display as SQUARES for each icon "block". Decrease the # and those squares get tighter width-wise. I'm just not certain then how it works with varying the # of rows and columns.
HOWEVER, in order to prevent overlap, the screen NEEDS to be in 4x4 with an LCD density of 240. That is, to keep the blocks square.
Otherwise, prepare to tweak and fiddle with your homescreens so your icons and icon text don't resemble scrambled mush, and what looks good in portrait won't necessarilly look good or the widgets won't be the same size in landscape. And vice versa.
So, like many other things, fiddling with this property (while cool.... I've finally settled for an lcd density of 210 with homescreens rocking in 6x6 using launcher pro plus) there are trade-offs.
Be aware, and have fun tweaking your settings.
Have you found anyway to avoid the slight blurring of Ui elements when not set to the default density?
I also tried 6x6 with 210 running LPP but my widgets (beautiful Weather, Switch Pro) wouldn't stretch the width of the screen.
I'm back to 4x7 which looks the best, but that doesn't make sense to me either!
EDIT - I have landscape mode disabled because it lags on LPP at the moment. I also don't have text displayed for my icons so if I could just get everything to line up correctly, I don't think the overlap would be that bad. I just can't figure out why the widgets don't stretch (I do have auto-fit checked).
Example of 210 4x7:

You do have Launcher Pro Plus right?? (Just checking because you can only do it with the paid version)
To be able to stretch it.. you have to press and hold it like you are going to remove it.. then release it. The widget will then be highlighted and at the bottom right of the highlighted widget.. you will see an area for you to drag and resize the widget. After you have resized it, press the back or home button.
Thank you for clarifying...it worked! I feel dumb for not trying that begot so I appreciate it! My dimensions are now 5 x 7. Im going to have to experiment and see what kind of dimensions work best. What are you using?

I'm actually at 5x6
You know.. I just played around with the homescreen rows and columns and I have come to find that... 5x10 is pretty good!! (That's 5 columns x 10 rows)
Yes you have the possibility to overlap... but the row alignment are so small... that you can easily move the widget up one and it looks it would on a 4x4
Is there a way to resize the icons?

Has anyone else had issues with third party wallpapers (non-stock wallpapers) being visually downgraded (pixelation specifically) upon being setup? I ended up purchasing the app Facets from the Play Store because I thought all the wallpapers looked pretty cool, however whenever I set one of them as a wallpaper, they end up looking significantly lower resolution. The images themselves look great when viewing them (both within the app and ones that I have since downloaded to my SD card) but once I set it as a wallpaper, I notice a significant difference in resolution. I have included two screenshots for reference: the first is of a wallpaper I have downloaded and am viewing in my Gallery app, and the second is the exact same image after being set as my wallpaper. If you focus on the lines composing the ape's nose, you can see a large difference in quality between the two images. Any ideas why, or perhaps fixes?

The app is available on the Galaxy App's app market and works on Samsung's touchwiz android 6.0 (some say you can side load the apk on touchwiz android version 5.1 and it will still work; app won't appear on the galaxy store unless you are on android 6.0 though)
It, of course being by samsung, DOES NOT require root and can be uninstalled if you don't like it.
Just look up "Good Lock" on the samsung app store (Galaxy Apps); it will say "update" instead of download since it's an update to the System UI, and your phone should reboot.
Confirmed working on tdunham's deodexed MM rom. Should work without any issues on stock none-rooted.
Here's a video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJ0P1S9jom0
(pokedex animations not included )
Just tried it. Tried it for a few minutes. And uninstalled it. Too many bright colors for my taste.
Colors can be changed by going into the Good Lock settings, then selecting the routines menu and editing default. Darker colors are on the left while lighter is on the right. If only the recents menu could be changed so easily.
Also the bokeh is ****. Not only does it cause lag upon opening the drawer, but it looks incredibly ugly. It's nowhere near as well implemented as iOS and even if it was, it wouldn't fit with material design.

I was happy once I figured out I could change the color from the butt ugly purple they started me on. Now I'm back closer to the stock MM color.
Your second point, are you talking about the app drawer on the lock screen? I didn't personally like that. You can disable it, though. If you go into routine just like changing the color and at the last setting page it has a little screen with the sections for clock, notifications, and app drawer. Uncheck the app drawer and it is gone.

You can set your own lockscreen background with Good Lock. After you install Good Lock it will change but if you go and set your lockscreen background again, it will stick.
Is it just me or while using good lock, and when you go into the recent apps and you hit clear all it doesn't clear all and it just clears apps that are visible in the recent apps menu?

Hello, you checked already display size and font size within android display settings?
Also custom launchers have more possibilities to change icon arrangement, size or label size.
If you want to go further I can also recommend kustom KLWP :good:

I have explored all avenues I think third party launcher is the only option I have and also root. Everything looks smaller on this screen compared to the S10. The font size and screen size settings appear to do the same thing on the OP7. Even Tapatalk fonts look small. I thought having a flat screen would make the screen estate bigger, albeit not. The navigation bar is about 1inch and the status bar another 0.5" approx 1.5" smaller usable screen I guess.
I definitely need to look into the option that you suggested.

Hold an empty spot on the desktop, then go to wallpaper & style, set the grid size to what you want on the bottom of the menu.

Ahh ok, had totally forgot that was the cause, lol such an easy task.
Or alternatively avoid Google's launcher and go for something infinitely more customizable and superior. I'd advise Nova Launcher.
Or group them and with one extra touch you can quadruple the number available.

I seem compelling as the stock launcher with the search bar in the buttom and the at glance in the top sucks ass.
Do you miss anything by installing the nova launcher or do you just get extra stuff and another launcher, like is there any reason to stick with the default launcher other then keeping it stock.

I like to use the default apps, including the launcher, when they allow me to do what I want/need. But when it comes to the Google/Pixel launcher I feel that Google is acting like Apple in NOT ALLOWING me to remove the STUPID search bar! I have never needed or used a search on a cell phone! So I do not want it taking up my screen real estate! So then, it's back to Nova Prime!

Ues I am thinking the same also for the "At a Glance" stupid thing, google, please allow me to remove these things.
~86 apps, 12 folders, 8 widgets - made to look like 15 app icons and 4 obvious folders (and 8 widgets). I might've lost count of the apps and skipped a few. In Nova Launcher Prime, with some "folders" set to behave like apps unless I swipe up or down on their icons. Some icons I have different swipe up and swipe down actions to launch other frequently used apps that I don't really need an icon for.
