Durability - Google Pixel 2 Questions & Answers

Before I post this, I have a Pixel 2 on order and am in no way bashing for the sake of it. That being said, its pretty disappointing that the pixel 2 fairs so much worse that the original pixel. The bend at the end is especially sad to see, not sure why they put a weak point in the frame almost in the middle of the one side. That being said, not planning on cancelling as it ticks all the boxes I care about and I certainly don't plan on bending/sitting on my phone.

What are your guys thoughts?

i am getting the 2 xl but
i am somewhat disappointed in the bend test the rest was ok

After seeing the jerryrigeverything test, I definitely feel more cautious about how I handle the phone. I didn't want to get a case and instead opt in for just dbrand skin and screen protector. Now it looks like I at least need to purchase a bumper case

I find most of his points not something I care about.
He spent a ton of time scratching the hell of a lot of time etching the back of the phone when he made the point quickly at the beginning.
For me the phone is too slippery to not use at least a minimal case, then what is going to do all that damage.
If I put the phone on a pocket, it is a front pocket screen in with nothing on the pocket with it. I don't sit on it etc
All of my phones look almost brand new after using for a long time. I am very cautious with my equipment.

The point he made was pretty crucial though. If material of pockets etc can discolour the paint on the phone, thats a disaster from the start.
The OG Pixel was very poor when it came to durability due to the soft aluminium used as opposed to the harder aluminium of more premium devices like iPhone and OnePlus 5.
The paint used will fare even worse, and unlike anodized aluminium, minor scratches wont simply "rub off", and rather, will likely be permanent.
Thats not even considering the fact that it will chip from any impact.
Also the OG Pixel suffered even when protected with the best case. A tiny piece of dirt can cause chaos if it manages to get in between the phone and case due to the soft metal, so the same will likely apply here.
Baffles me that Google have dropped the ball on hardware again.

To be honest I am a bit disappointed that Google charges so much for these phones and they still not as strong as should be.
Saying that, 6p snapped in half and during my 2 years with it not had a issue with durability so I believe my Pixel 2 will serve me well till Pixel 3 is out

I agree I had a 6 plus when bend gate went down. I thoroughly in a UAG case and didn't worry about it. I the. Gave it to my 13 yr old daughter and she had no issues. Really I cant recall even snapping a phone ever.. this is a non issue. I feel good about going with the Pixel 2 over the XL I feel it's been less issue prone.

I am in construction, and my phone sits in my pocket all day while I am working. It was in my pocket without a case all day on Friday, since my Otterbox hadn't arrived yet, and it did just fine. Since then I have had the case on it, and I don't worry about it.

Here we definitely differ - when I got my first doubleshot it was the first case available. I picked one up but really didn't like it. No shock absorbing, tends to scratch the outside edge of the device when putting on or taking off...
Then moved up to the trident case when it came available. Absolutely love it. Trident has shock absorbing springy goodness, plus was pleasantly surprised to find dust filters where speakers/mics are.
...but anymore my doubleshots run around in their birthday suits.
I got a silver one ( thanks yogi! ) and put my black backplate on it. Just looks damn sexy.
No cases allow it to show off it's beauty, so I just take really good care of it.
The black one, my first smart phone ever, sometimes is naked, sometimes wears the trident.
I don't know if a better case can be found then the trident - but it does have some drawbacks. Most notably being the usb port and headphones jack are exposed.
I hate those hardshell cases with a passion though. Nice to know someone likes them, different people like different things.
I know what you're saying. I noticed a small scuff where the last two clips connected a couple of months after I first put one on. It wasn't too long ago I saw my first Trident case and they look like a really durable form of protection. My hardshells aren't nearly as good although they do protect it from scatches overall. I'm alot like you in respect to how much I baby this phone though and have only dropped it once since last November when I got it. Luckily it was in my rubberized Tmo case at the time even though it was on the carpet in my office. Not padded like the trident but it does have some small spongy strips inside to kind of support it and reduce shock.
I carried it a couple of times "naked" but I was always kind of freaked out about having nothing at all on it. But I will say this....It's a BEAUTIFUL phone that is a shame to have to cover with anything. But....I may be a bit prejudiced.
I haven't used a case since I dumped my iPhone 3GS three years ago.
My phone spends it day either on my desk or in my pants pocket. (Back pocket for jeans, or front pocket for slacks.)
I have had three phones in the interim; but each new phone was an upgrade, not a replacement for a broken phone. And, yes, I've dropped all three onto concrete multiple times. but so far the only damage has been a dented corner or nicked finish.

My horrible S4 experience

First of all, let me say that I really like the S4. I sold my iPhone 5 and be able to buy it at full price when it was released. I like the size, it's just about perfect size for me, fits well in my hand. The air gestures and air views are pretty nice, they come in handy. Coming from an iPhone, having a replaceable battery is priceless, I liked being able to swap out my low battery with a full charged one.
My first S4 broke while in my pocket on 5/6, I wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary, was just doing things around the house, when I pulled it from my pocket there was a crack from the upper right corner down the middle of the left side. The AMOLED display under the glass is what broke, device was unusable, nothing showed on the screen except some colors on top left above the crack.
After fighting with AT&T and Asurion the entire next day, AT&T agreed to give me an early upgrade. So I bought a new one on 5/7.
I received my new S4 on 5/10, then this morning, 5/15, while at work I was squatted down, texting, and dropped it from around knee level on carpet with padding over concrete and it cracked the AMOLED display, this time in the upper right corner, with 4 cracks from the side to about an inch into the display.
This S4 had a Spigen Ultra Thin Air case on it, as well as Spigen's Glas.t Slim screen protector.
I don't expect manufacturers to make phones that are indestructible, but this seems ridiculous to me.
I was a long time Apple user before I bought the S4, I don't think I will ever go back, but I'm regretting going with Samsung now. I've spent over $900 between both devices and now they are both in the mail (as well as almost $200 in accessories that are worthless now), for Samsung to evaluate, so for the next two weeks I'm stuck with using an old S2 that likes to reboot every 15 minutes.
I've read a few posts on here about people breaking the screen under the glass like I did. So I'd be careful if you own one.

That sucks dude. But hey, a little advice...fix that S2! If it's rebooting like that, there's something wrong. There are several super-stable Jelly Bean roms available for flashing these days. I come from that world, so I know it like the back of my hand...PM me if you'd like me to help you make your S2 awesome.
Before anyone says this isnt a necessary thread, I think it is.
Having a 32GB and having spent money on my device and screen protector and cases I'd like to know this too, so I would love to hear from anyone else that has broken their device easily
Damn that sucks OP. I think you have bad luck with the S4, I remember when you mentioned the S4 screen cracking while it was in your pocket. I would get another phone if I were you.
I have a really hard time "feeling sorry" for people who drop and break their phones and complain.
I don't know what kind of response (pity?) that you want from people.
Drop the iphone 4 in just the right spot and it'll crack too. Every phone is the same more or less.
Don't want a broken phone? Don't drop it. You break it that way, the fault is no ones but yourself.

That's kinda of an ignorant comment, the OP had his screen cracked and it was just in his pocket so no drop at all. The second time it was a drop but it is his experience and I understand it especially when you purchase a device this expensive twice. Don't be rude man.
His story for breaking in his pocket was "while around the house". So whats to say he didn't accidentally smash it again something while doing housework or anything else like a table?
Dropping your phone - what do you expect? Go buy a Nokia if you plan on dropping it. Even then im sure drop proof isn't part of any phone's warranty.
Pretty straight forward. You may not like my "tone" but you can't honestly count it against the phone if you're not keeping it safe. The error is human in this case. Own up to it and take better care of your phone.
I've cracked iphones and android screens and bodies before, it was probably my fault in handling it; but you definitely won't see me running to a forum and complaining about the manufacturer having shoddy quality when it was clearly human error.
I'm starting to wonder if maybe it's the Chinese models in specific breaking like that because I have seen multiple S4's dropped now WITHOUT ANY CASE from 6 feet and survive with only scrapes to the actual frame and here you have a case AND a glass screen protector, and it falls from half the height and suffers catastrophically.
Has to be something more going on here. Reviews will also show the phone can survive falls just like any other premium metal phone and then some, so quite an odd case here
ALSO to everyone else, stop hating on the OP. Yea I have to agree it's just really vague to say your phone was just up and broken, but I'm willing to look at it as the OP is telling the truth cause at worst, even if he is lying, it really don't matter.
No offense OP, but I'm going to call bull**** here. You have to be leaving out something -- even if it's by accident. I've had smartphones with larger screens for 5+ years now, and not once have i cracked or broken a phone. The last phone that broke was the first nokia clamshell that came out -- and that was after i dropped it from standing on to a concrete floor. Even then it worked still, the plastic just cracked a bit.
There is no way you broke your phone just having it in your pocket -- unless you were wearing super tight hipster jeans with your keys in your pocket. Futhermore, dropping your phone 2 feet on to a padded floor, won't just break your phone either....it just wont.
I've dropped my s3/s4 many times on to my wood floor now without any issues (without a case).
Also, wouldn't your phone be under the 14 day return policy anyway? If anything happens in those 14 days, you get a new one?
Overall, this just doesn't make sense. I think you are omitting some key details here; these phones ARE NOT that fragile.
EDIT-- How did you figure $900 dollars between two phones plus $200 in accessories?
A new line/renewal should be about $200-250 per phone; cases run $30-35, USBs 5-10, screen protector 7-15....
You should have gotten insurance.

I'm not asking for anything, I'm just putting this info out here.
In my experience, the S4 is easily broken.
And it's not glass that broke in both of mine, it was the display under the glass, the device was not usuable after. The glass was pristine on both, for that matter the both phones were as well, just the display cracked.
You can do what you want with the info, I'm just letting people know what happened with my 2 devices.
When you keep you phone in your pocket, make sure you always keep the screen against your leg. I broke my first Galaxy S2 with the screen out in my pocket when I leaned against a table.
I am shocked that the 2nd time with having a GLAS.t tempered glass that it broke.
You spend this kind of money on phone...treat it like your car....GENTLE. I have had a smartphone for years and not even 1 scratch on any phone I have ever owned. It is like your girlfriend or wife...Gently...
Very expensive way to learn.

Let's be realistic. It's no secret this phone is easily broken. And tbh, when you say something like "it's all your fault because you dropped it is a bit ridiculous. I've dropped my gs2 more times than I can count, face down, from up high, sliding across concrete etc, and the screen is still fine, but the build quality on the gs4 is seriously lacking. I'm scared to even buy one after hearing all these stories. For now I'm sticking to my gs2

How can you say the build quality is lacking if you don't even have one?
Just to be safe, think of it this way, if you drop it, it WILL crack. Of course, it might not but if you think it will every time, maybe a little more precaution will be taken. It doesn't matter if it was a mistake...just don't drop it. Any phone that is mostly screen will always have a certain level of fragility and should always be treated that way. It doesn't mean the build quality is bad.

Or like telling your wife about your girlfriend... handle it very carefully... like your life depends on it.
Samsung does extensive hard use testing on its handsets so I wonder if this was a bad batch or something. Thanks for sharing your experience. Hopefully we don't see a bunch of these threads popping up.

Ya my S4 broke too, dropped mine 2 or 3 feet in a case and the screen shattered, build quality is not there imo

well... i was just thinking about investing in a good case.. but now, i think i will buy insurance instead.. or maybe just sell it off.. really cant afford to loose an expensive phone like this.
thanks for the info.

LifeProof Defective Battery Door

For anyone out there who are currently using or have used the LifeProof Fre; did you ever have any problems with the battery door cracking? I, just last week, received my second case from a warranty claim in under a year. Both times, my battery door has suddenly had a very tiny horizontal crack right at the bend just under the snap. The first time I was kinda worried that the crack may have been from a drop I had almost 2 months prior. There was no visible damage and the only way I knew something was wrong was that when closing the door, I no longer heard the familiar snap. The 2nd time I noticed the door had cracked I had been able to decidedly rule out any type of drop being the cause. The only visible signs of anything were normal wear and tear (small scratches on the back plastic from putting in and taking out of pockets), and on the sides where I had removed the case twice before.
Anyway, I was just curious how many others have had this happen to them. I would assume quite a few as mine cracked for almost literally no reason at all.

Here's the thing, for reasons I can't figure out the build materials for the iPhone Lifeproof cases and the Galaxy Lifeproof cases are not the same. I've owned and held and inspected the iPhone 5 version and the Galaxy S4 Fre. My iPhone 5 case lasted for a SOLID YEAR without any issues whatsoever. The Galaxy Fre case had the charging port door shatter/chip for nothing but normal use. No drops. I had three replacements within a 2.5 month time period when I finally just said screw it and abandoned the brand. If they would make the build materials the same I think it would last and be wonderful, and I still definitely recommend the Lifeproof case IF you have an iPhone. If you have a Galaxy avoid avoid avoid. I think I've read that better options are the Seidio Obex.

Thanks for the replies. The only reason I'm still using the LifeProof is that they send me another free case when it breaks. I most certainly wouldn't still be using it if I had to keep paying full price for another. I was just curious if anyone else has had this problem. You would think that there would be more reports on this, but I haven't seen mention of it on this site...
There were when I was using LifeProof a few months ago...

Too fragile: 24 inch drop destroys MXPE. Moto Care stinks.

COMPLETE FAIL. Is this phone too fragile?
Less than 48 hours ownership... Bent down to tie my shoe, phone falls 24 inches from breast pocket, screen totally obliterated and unresponsive. Phone is bricked. Can't unlock. Can't retrieve data. Can't answer calls or read texts or SILENCE ALARMS!!!
This fragility is totally unacceptable. I carried a DROID MAXX HD for 2-1/2 years with only a 3M film screen protector. The MAXX HD suffered numerous cringing falls and rebounds off my foot skittering across asphalt and concrete. Never a scratch on that screen.
I don't see any 3M film screen protectors for the MXPE, only tempered glass. It seems to me that film is superior. Hard tempered glass protectors would seem to transfer shock while plastic film deforms and absorbs shock.
MOTO CARE SUCKS (so far). I immediately purchased Moto Care online (which advertises retroactive coverage if purchased within thirty days). But the Moto web site did not immediately recognize my purchase. Spoke to three uninformative customer (non-) service representatives (with heavy language barriers).
The third rep told me my Moto Care would take up to ten days for "delivery". WHAT? There is nothing to ship! Further, the Moto Care purchase FAQ says nothing about "delivery" delays. The rep says "sorry", there's nothing he can do.
Next day, my Moto Care package magically "appears" on the Moto web site under "My Stuff" and so I click the "Repair" button. I enter all my details and make payment. Now, it's almost been a week and there's no sign of life. I click "Track Repair" and enter my RMA number. Nothing. So, then I attempt to track using my IMEI number. Nothing. Finally, I try it again using my phone number and zip code. Surprise---that one works and I can see I have a repair order, but it's all blanks under "Replacement device, date shipped, etc."
How many days to get a replacement? Who knows.
Any other aftermarket sources to replace a cracked screen?
I have a film based screen protector. Several options at Amazon. Your experience seems very odd. Is your post a repost? Seems like I've seen it before.

I've occasionally dropped every phone I've ever owned without damage. This phone literally obliterated from a short drop. Do I have to wrap it in a pillow? I'll check Amazon for film protectors, thanks. Not a re-post here.
Go on you guys, wish for even smaller bezels, less protruding chassis and more "edge" effect on the rounded, exposed glassy front surface, larger screens and thinner devices.
Can't cheat physiscs. Where there is no crash zone there is no crash zone.
Nexus 5x prime example: cheap (but soft, dampening) plastic and screen is sunken in. Or Sony, with the rubbery corners on their devices.
The more of the above comes true, the less shock absorbent the devices become. I dont care about a 1mm or 2mm bezel or a crappy unhandy edged glass surface if this means more spiderman-app and less funtime with the device. And I want to make all sh**heads shut up which cry for all of the above, producing crystal cellphones as a consequence. Go get and shatter your iPhones if you want useless, easily breakable, expensive jewellery. I try to actually use and not only show off my devices.

HEAR, HEAR!!! I'd pay $100 more for a THICKER, HEAVIER device with diamond plate bezel, thick long-lasting battery, and non-ridiculous connectors (i.e, cheap, flimsy USB jacks)---Do you hear me, you USB Implementers Forum designers??? When are you going to design a hardy connector???? USB-C is another disaster design with no thought toward ruggedness. But, oh boy, it plugs in both ways... yippeee!!! NOT.
I actually think there'd be a huge market for a ruggedized military-looking device ("tactical" is the buzz word among the gun/hunter crowd). Slim jewelry phones are for the 21-year old ladies who walk between bars in winter with 4-inch skirts and no sleeves on, and maybe for dentists and lawyers and West Hollywood types. I need a man phone.
Ugh... One tiny drop in the wrong spot will damage any device. Don't drop it, or put a case on it, that simple.

Simply unacceptable for those who physically work for a living. And, like I said, my MAXX HD survived dozens of drops. I don't feel I should have to expect a 24-inch drop will destroy a phone.
Sorry to hear about your experience. But when the screen glass makes up an edge of the phone then it isnt going to survive drop into hard surfaces. This is why they included a bumper in the box. Keep in mind these things are made of glass and delicate electronics. It would be wise to temper your expectations. I agree about Motorola's customer service. It leaves EVERYTHING to be desired.

If you are on Verizon look at the Droid turbo 2. Has a5.43-inch QHD display that is said to be shatterproof, Snapdragon 810 with either 32/64GB of storage, along with a 3,760mAh battery.
All of that great stuff negated by being tied to Verizon.

OP had a Droid MAXX so at one point was on Verizon. Say what you will VZW is still unmatched in coverage area I've had them for 16 years will not change unless I can get my UDP through someone else with no throttling. I use 400Gb/month thanks to root and tether my phone is my ISP no cable bill is awesome.
If you want a phone to last, get a case for it.
I've had 5 smartphones, dropped them all, never had any damage to any of them... Because I've always had them in a £3 case!
Better value than insurance lol.

I've dropped my MXPE from a couple a feet up and it has lived to tell the tale. I only use the provided bumper, lucky I guess. Sorry to hear about your clusterf*** of a time trying to get a replacement. Good luck.
Breaking a phone screen its pure luck, i had a X 2014 which i dropped SO MANY TIMES and never ever had a problem
Then 1 night, a 10inch drop and BAM screen broken.
And why are you assuming your experience its the general situation with the phone ? I dropped this phone the other day from about the same height, not even a scratch or something thanks to the bumper that came in.

Oh I feel ya @Sasquatch8600 (the app's not letting me quote). I've been with Verizon for 13 years...I just don't think I'll ever get another phone tied to them, or any carrier for that matter. Verizon keeps those phones super locked up and their update history isn't very stellar.
My wife dropped mine about 3 feet while on a cruise last week and my i-blaison case protected it. It hit a metal strip on the edge of a step.

Mine dropped from about 8 feet, with the included bumper, hitting stuff on the way down. Not a scratch on it. I was very surprised. And lucky, I know. Like someone stated earlier, it's really how it falls/lands.

My eldest knocked mine out of my hand this afternoon, 3ft drop onto a wooden floor, landed corner first.
Case did its job, not a mark on it.

MOTO SUCKS BECAUSE I DROPPED MY PHONE WITHOUT A CASE ON IT AND IT BROKE! :crying::crying::crying:
MOTO CARE SUCKS BECAUSE THEY ARENT BENDING OVER BACKWARDS TO SELL INSURANCE TO A BROKEN DEVICE! :crying::crying::crying:
I have dropped my MXPE everyday for a month from varying heights including a second story balcony to a cement floor.. Want to know my secret??
A FRICKING CASE YOU IDIOT.
Cry me a frickin river for your first world problems.

Anyone else already have a crack on the side where the antenna lines are?

My phone is about 14 days old. Already have a crack along the antenna line. love the phone otherwise and just want to know if anyone else has the issue. I always have it in a case.

Don't know what kind of case you have. I bought the tech 21 it's really rigid. I won't be sitting on this phone lol. In the video he use an awful lot of force I'd never put that kind of force on my phone.

I have a case that is more on the soft side but I haven't really done much to my phone besides put it in my pocket.
Wow that is so sad! I saw Jerry rigs strength test and it cracks during the bend test at 4 points where the antenna is. Oh god this phone is a nightmare then
Well.. send it it since you still have warranty?
Let's see how widespread an "issue" this is really going to be. I bet it won't be at all. [emoji1]

Was it your back pocket?
I smell a troll that saw a youtube video! LOL
I called support yesterday after reading the reports. Tier 1 rep went to Tier 2 to find out. He claimed that this would be covered by warranty barring other evidence of accidental damage - ie; fired from a cannon directly into a woodchipper. I guess I can't play hacky sack with the thing.

Why exactly does that make this phone a nightmare? The pressure they put on this phone in the test is WAY more than anyone would typically put on it. Put it in your back pocket and sit down, probably, but that would likely be any phone. I've had a ton of different phones, and never, ever had one bend. Even my Blackberry pearl, EVO, or nexus s. Those were way before phones were very sturdy. I seriously doubt most folks will bend this phone.

he forgot this wasn't a reddit post.
No cracks BUT I have official Google case for the xl (grey fabric) and just from taking it in/out of case some of the paint near the seam is coming off. WTF Google!!?? All black variant so I'm pretty pissed. Love the case but how the hell!? It's been in a case since minute 1 and never spent a second naked in my pocket or otherwise.

Seems like it's a big F for the glossy finish for the black variant. You could try to warranty it out and see what happens.

So as soon as you put it in the case this happened? Well it had to have since it was never outside a case for even a minute. But then you are taking it in and out of the case therefore it's been out for some time. I'm slightly confused as to if it's been out of a case or not. Nonetheless, I had a fabric case on my P3a and that thing is nearly impossible to get off. I did take it off once before the final time and it took me quite some time to get the phone out without damaging it. I'm not sure if the 4xl is the same but you definitely should get a replacement, put it in the case and leave it there.
I agree. I have the Pixel fabric case and find it impossible to take off. I find a good way is to take off the left side completely first. Don't try to take off from the top or bottom.

Sure I take it out but it's never touched a surface and never been in my pocket without a case. Primarily using new Pixel 4XL case from Google. It's pretty upsetting.
Probably the taking in and out of the case that's doing it. The stock Google cases fit very tightly, something that holds true with the two aftermarket cases I've also purchased. None of them were easy to get the phone in and out of and were/are tighter than I expect from a case. I mean so far the thing I've done with my phone that is most likely to break a phone is putting it in the cases I've owned.
On the bendy thing I don't buy it at all; it's not just a significant force applied but also done so in a very particular way on the very tip of the ends with a fulcrum in the middle. Try and imagine how you will apply a similar loading to the frame in actual use and it isn't easy to come up with a scenario. Not saying they wont bend or cant be broken but I am saying that I would be very skeptical of anyone claiming they encountered this damage in normal use.
One last thought here is that I wonder or question where the bar is, how strong should the phone be? Obviously it should be able to stand up to the rigors of the day to day but are we starting to expect too much? I'm actually asking, not sure if I can define a realistic expectation for a phones strength. I do feel however that some people are asking too much from what with current technology is inherently going to be a somewhat fragile piece of electronic equipment.
One question did they ever have a bend test for flip phones? Short answer no! Why they would snap in half. I agree I think we are expecting these phones to be tanks.
Here is a better question. Who puts a 1,000 dollar device in their back pocket like it's a .25 cent pack of gum? ?

The real question is where are you finding packs of gum for 25¢?
