I'm on an AT&T grandfathered unlimited plan. Is there any way for me to hide the fact that I am tethering from AT&T?
I have altered my build prop to allow me to enable the tethering feature in rooted stock Oreo.
I have read that using a VPN on the client machine (my laptop) will prevent AT&T from recognizing that I am tethering, but I cannot confirm this.
Any wisdom from the XDA gurus would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

quick question for tethering (undetected). I have read it might be detected based off of the apn name used. So what is the apn settings used for remaining "undetected". I currently have a jailbroken iPhone 3g that I will be retiring that I do this with now.
Best bet is to root and then get the wireless tether for root users app.

I believe 3.1 beta 14 works when the right settings are used. Search around on here, I know I saw it somewhere.

Hmm, I don't now if that's true or not and if you had to use a different APN based on plan...Then I imagine if you didn't have that plan, connecting to that APN wouldn't work And if one proxy server can detect tethering then why wouldn't all of them do so?
I think I would look into that "tether guard" app and I would also use a method through the debugging mode of the phone.
Debug tethering, have to google that one
Free tether ? Something like that, the app costs $10 but I thought it was worth it back when I was on Sprint.

wifi tether works perfect, the debug tether is detectable, any other ideas? for a "wired" tether?
Has anyone been able to tether from this phone without using the data from the tethering bucket?
In other words, Were you able to tether from it and use the data from the data bucket?
I have unlimited data with 3gb of tether. I would use the data from my unlimited data bucket to tether.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks
You can use easytether however the full version is a paid app...this is confirmed to work with my older t-mobile grandfathered account which has unlimited 3g/h+ and no hotspot/tethering. It requires running an app on the pc side since it uses adb to build the connection. (usb and under windows also bluetooth).
Were you able to create a new APN by clicking on the + sign in the "tethering and hotspot" section?
You can just use the official lollipop tether. Doesn't count towards t-mobile tether data usage. Pulled down 25 gigs yesterday with no issues

Anyone on a Verizon grandfathered unlimited plan try the hotspot? I know Foxfi doesn't work on Android 7.0 for wireless tether, however I tried the mobile hotspot and it checks and says my hotspot is enabled and starts. Works great, checked my Verizon features and I am not subscribed to any tethering plans. Not sure what to do with it, anyone else try this? Will we get billed for this?
I'm wondering the same... I want to make sure before in go all in on this phone that this key feature is enabled while I remain on old unlimited plan.
Thanks!
I'm still grandfather unlimited and it tells me I need to subscribe to the hot spot service.
PDAnet?
Likewise, has anyone tried PDAnet with it for tethering?

just got an s8+ today and found out that the native hotspot will work if you pop sim tray out, it will then take you to lock screen, pull down tray and turn on hotspot. You may get an error saying no sim installed but just keep pushing hotspot button until it turns on. It is working on mine now but now I am trying to figure out how I can disable ota updates. Anyone have any help for me? Thanks
So i did a test using pdanet+ on my galaxy s7 (MetroPCS unrooted) and wanted to check if it actually hides my data usage for that unlimited tether. But it does not work at all! I checked the MetroPCS website and it shows me using data.... is there a step I'm missing to this? Assistance is greatly needed!
I was able to root my Moto G Stylus 5G. i try to edit build.prop no success. so, i unable to find good way to by pass att or cricket tethering check beside using sharenet or pdanet+. any roms out there allow me to use free tethering?
Your trying to just bypass the provisioning check so you can enable tethering when it's not available on your account/byod? Or are you trying to have your traffic not count as tethered to bypass account limits? Is this an ATT/Cricket phone, or one with an unlocked bootloader/Magisk?
