"AC3 is not supported": Using v1.9.8 - MX Player

I know AC3 is supposed to be built in, but I'm always getting that it's not supported. Is there a specific setting I need to check?

AC3 works but only in stereo.
When I use 1.9.8 codecs situation is the same
I don't know what could I do?
Best regards

But according to them, "With the latest update our App now supports AC3 audio by default (no custom codec needed). "

currently, audio pass-through works when there is no internal decoder is available.
In future versions, we will add an option to prefer audio passthrough over internal decoders.

Your page says: "With the latest update our App now supports AC3 audio by default (no custom codec needed). "
But on Mibox I get "AC3 is not supported". What do you suggest? MX Player Custom Codec?

AC3 audio on MX Player PRO on Android TV at Philips POS 9002 doesn't work in 5.1.
It detects dolby digital but plays only in 2.0 (on custom codecs and withouth them - passthrough)
DTS works like a charm but Dolby digital not.
MX Player suport...please do something with this issue.
Best regards

If I use a different player like BS Player it works perfectly.

Can you post the mediainfo of the file?
If it has dts audio track then you have to use custom codec.
thanks, it's dts.
I have downloaded the custom codec and now it's fine.
However, may I ask why this codec didn't include in mx player in the first place?
Also the one from the google play doesn't work. I had to use this:

The detailed answer is in the first post of the custom codec thread...!!!
In short DTS people is not ready to negotiate with SW players. So, to avoid copyright issues it's dropped from the official version.

AC3 not supported in update. Is there a workaround?

I already have a DTS codec. Am i able to use a 3rd party codec for AC3 and DTS at the same time?
Same here. I was devastated this morning. Any help please??

[Feature Request] AC3/DTS Passthrough

Hi !
In France , an ISP called FREE released a new TV BOX which is called the Freebox Mini 4K.
This box runs Android TV .
It has a Broadcom BCM7252 Brahma15 dual-core 1.5Ghz SOC .
Many users have installed Kodi but there have some problems .
Many users use MXPlayer because it is the best player on this Android Box, it is on the AndroidTV Play Store and it has the best video quality. But however KODI works with HDMI and S/PDIF passtrough in AC3 / DTS .
Is it possible to have this option with MxPlayer ?
Can anyone assist in the French community? = D
hi, i have the same problem here:
with the new Sony Android TV, i think that MX Player it's the only way to play videos on that tv (VLC actually sucks), but there's that problem with DTS encoding!
Can mx player developers fix it? :good:
Same here in the US. The default plex player does not support mkv, so I have to use mx player pro. Unfortunately MX player pro does not give me the ability to pass through audio! My receiver can decode DTS, Dolby, etc I just need the player to do audio passthrough!
v 1.7.40 can do this. My device have native support for ac3/dts but with 1.8.1 MX refuse to play ac3. Damn it
Hmm @sumantaadk I assume that when it previously worked, you were using HW, and not HW+ ?
@ everyone else, I assume you have already tried the custom audio codec? MX by itself does not support DTS.

My device only support sw decoder for the video I have. I still can play ac3/dts with previous version but the beta completely remove the possibility. I think developer removed support due to copyright issue. So the current issue is bug or because of copyright?
AC3/DTS was support was removed by default due to copyright, yes; that's one of the main reasons to use the custom codec.
I would have thought that if you use HW and passthru to Android media framework to use the device's native render, that this method would have allowed for DTS...

Beacuse, you are using old custom codecs. If you want to play dts or ac3 you must use the custom codec compiled for the specific version of the player. After the update, if the old codec is found as incompatible it will be automatically unloaded. MX Player 1.8.x needs custom codec version 1.8.0.

Audio is auto disabled by MX in HW+
Hi, I found this old thread by searching DTS / AC3 Passthrough. So is this feature active in Mx Player pro. I have the 1.7 version with custom codec, and when I play DTS or AC3 file, the audio is automaticly converted by MX player into a 5.1 output, if I select a 5.1 preset on my AVR I can here 5.1 sound, but I would like to have the audio be direct stream to my AVR, and AC3/DTS be converted by my AVR.

Use HW decoder without custom codec. It will pass the audio stream to the audio receiver. If your receiver has dts/ac3 decoder, it will play true 5.1 channel (or whatever) present in the audio stream.

Ok, thank you for your help, and lets wait for the next version.
hello, i found the info in this thread very useful thanks. However i wasnt able to quite get everything working so i was hoping someone might confirm i am doing everything right.
i'm using mx player on a nvidia shield to play a stream of h.264 video and Dolby Digital audio, its from my tv server. i want to pass through the audio to my avr which can handle this and looking at posts above i need to use the hw decoder without the custom codec. unfortunately i get no video with the hw decoder. with both the software and hw+ decoders i get video and then with a custom codec i get audio but its downmixed.
is the hd+ decoder with custom codec and downmixed audio the best i can expect for now and is it likely that the 1.9 release mentioned may fix this?
thanks!

Yes. HDMI Passthrough will be used when the codec is not supported by the MX Player & The same is supported by the device connected through HDMI.
We will improve it further in future to have more controls on the user side.

Hi dev. I tried with many 4k with AC3 or DTS streaming.. but i can't get audio work..
I use MX player 1.9.8 pro on my sony 9005 android tv, connected to the ampli by HDMI/ARC cable.
In codec menu, i check any kind of hardware supported codec.. and deselect SW render (only HW+ for video/audio).. but can't hear anything from my speaker..
With other app (for local file streamiing), amplifier automatically detect the audio format and give me on it display the correct format (DTS or DD).
With MX player pro and local/iptv streaming, i can't get it work.
Any idea?
Thank'you!!!

Hi
I must say that in 1.9.8 with HW+ there is no 5.1 sound passthrough to my Apmplituner No DD and no DTS.
In HW there is 5.1 passthrough to my Ampli but only DTS 5.1. Amplituner sees Dolby Digital but plays only in 2.0 - I don't know why but there is a problem with DD.

Unfortunately, no. The only way is attempting to force pass through even if the hardware doesn't report the decoding capability. We will highlight this with our development and will get it prioritized for you.

I tried to play movies using default video player of the Android tv and it supports 5.1 Dolby digital passthrough via HDMI ARC. But passthrough using 3rd party video players like MX player, Kodi doesnt seems to decode the 5.1 audio where as PCM works just fine.

Hi all,
I have also problem with audio passthrough over HDMI, I try to run Dolby Atmos on my Nvidia Shield, problem what I faced now is when I have video with Dolby Atmos it need HW+ to work but passthrough work only on HW decoder,
Also I cannot select subtitles from mkv video with HW decoder,
MX Player v1.25.8 (AndroidTV)
Device: Nvidia Shield
Audio: Yamaha RX-A2080
On going issue
This has been an on going issue with MX for years, I reported this over 3 years ago and still no solution. Stock reply is they're looking at it!
A simple forced pass through like VLC would do the job for most users with an amp but it's yet to come.
Even the pro version won't allow forced pass through.
Is this issue solved? What im looking for is play dolby digital movie in my android smart tv and get 5.1 sound from my sony e6100 home theater via HDMI ARC. It seems MX cant handle this.
Necro join. MX sends everything as dd2.0 regardless of any settings.
As mentioned above this has been a issue for years. When you mention it on other forums the common response is "Install the codecs" which doesnt work in this situation. A year or so ago I sent mxplayer support a email and got the arrogant response of "Mxplayer app is the ONLY app that properly detects if hdmi-passthrough should be enabled, otherwise very very bad things can happen." Well guess Im damn lucky my receiver hasnt burst into flames when pretty much any other player in existence uses it. Either the developer doesnt have the skill to correct this, or doesnt care. In my search I did find a similiar app that I hadnt heard of that works very well. Vimu Player.

MX player Pro build 1.9.5 dropped MPEG2 support?

mpeg2video has broken in last version of MX Player Pro 1.9.5. It reports "This video format (mpeg2video) is not supported".
MX Player Pro 1.9.5 ARMv7 Neon was installed from Google Play.
Hello,
My MX Player Pro was updated to 1.9.5 from Play Store.
Since the update, I cannot play any MPEG2 videos.
Before the update all .mpg, .ts and .REC video files worked fine.
Now I get "This video format (mpeg2video) is not supported."
(well, mine is in finnish but it translates to that)
Is this a bug or planned issue?
My player is ARMv7 NEON on Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 & Samsung Galaxy S7

No, not yet.
Actually, for years I have just been using MX Player without any problems and without knowing about any custom codecs.
All my files has been standard mpeg2, mpeg4 or h264 stuff so nothing custom about them at all.
All these including mpeg2 have been working fine for years now.
So maybe I will need to look in to those.
mpeg2video not supported
After upgrading MX Player to 1.9.6 at Samsung S5Neo the .ts files recorded at Synology from DVB-T cannot be played. It says "mpeg2video not supported". Same applies to the DVB-T live stream.
Use custom codec.

So is this really the way things work with MX Player Pro from now on?
I must use custom codec to watch mpeg2 decoded videos and for every new update of MX Player I will need to get new custom codec?
I updated the MX Player Pro yesterday to 1.9.8 (I think it was 1.9.5) and now the custom codec (1.9.0) that I have won’t work with it.
