which phone should i get - Sony Xperia XZ Premium Questions & Answers

Hey guys, my phone contract will be coming to an end in the next few months, and wondering what I should get next, at the moment I have a nexus 6p, but I'm thinking of moving away from the line of Google phone. I really like the xz premium, everything on paper seems to indicate a great phone (even better than the new Xperia phones). I have been comparing Xperia phones and always seem to go back to xz premium, what do you guys think? Should I get this phone or one of the new ones like the xa1?

Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Don't really like the Samsung ui, on paper it's not that much different to xz premium

read about the phones in the Sonymobile support forum. If you still want it when you know the down sides, go for it.

Yeah that's true but I don't really need root yet

I haven't used the Note 8 or the new Pixels, but I like the XZ Premium. I wish it was fully compatible with T-Mobile, but that probably doesn't matter in Australia. I compared to my friend's Note 8, and I like the XZP better. Note 8 is nice, but it's awkwardly shaped and the silly bezel-less design makes hard to hold without touching the screen. I don't know how much Samsung improved their UI, but I was pretty sick of my S7 by the time I switched back to Sony. Plus, the price just dropped on the XZP if that matters to you. The 4K screen is really nice, but honestly not a feature that gets used much. My only gripe is that the phone is just a little too tall to fit nicely in my pocket, but that applies to most phones these days. It fits, it's just enormous.

Thanks for your input I really like the xzp as well, I had a play with one at Vodafone and it seemed good, have you noticed any stuttering with the UI, the one I was playing with had it (could of just been the outdated firmware on it).

I looked at the specs of the note 8 and the camera is pretty pathetic, Samsung must use alot of post processing to enhance the image quality, I haven't played with one yet, but since my S3 I have wanted to stay away from Samsung and the Exynos chipsets

Hmm must of just been the display phone then.. has anyone got a xa1 ultra, or knows anyone with one,? Seems like an ok phone, poor on the benchmarks though

I would get the google pixel xl 2, if you can live without a headphone jack and microSD Card slot. It's going to have a much bigger dev community, much more support for accessories, with relatively the same or better hardware/specs, and much smaller bezels. Also, I wouldn't get an XA1 Ultra. It's just not as good as the xz premium. I already get frustrated with sony's poor ui choices at times, I couldn't imagine having a phone that's intentionally half-assed from sony.

The Xperia XZ Premium is the best Phone ever.

I dunno really lol just don't want a pixel, I don't miss the Samsung ui, didn't really like it,

If you're set on not getting a pixel I'd say go with this one then. The xz premium is the only phone that competes with the pixel xl 2 right now imo.

Have you own an Xperia before? If not then this is the one to get.

I do kind of miss the pen from my Note 7. If you want a stylus, the Note 8 is the way to go.

Is it a good phone?

Ok, so I pretty much just bought myself a Honor 8 but I can still return it as I haven't opened the packaging.
So generally it looked great in the store and everything and I just thought the software was a little weird (Coming from someone who used Touchwiz and Cyanogenmod before)
When I tried the Camera in the store it was looking great! And honestly I just want you to tell me a little bit about your own experience with the phone.
I got the phone for like 30% of normal price which means I got it for ~325$ so I got it really cheap!
So what about your own experience with the phone? Is it any good? (Coming from a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini)
And also what about size?

Why don't you read all the threads that are available... tons of people's opinion located throughout this forum

I came from a Galaxy S7 Snapdragon 820 variant and I have to say that overall the Honor 8 is a much better phone. Despite being an iOS-esque skin the OS runs very smooth for me and battery life is pretty good. It has a lot of practical features that don't really overwhelm the user in my opinion. Although it's CPU/GPU are technically slower than the S7's, it still has an admirable amount of performance to it. I love the dual camera, even though some may say it isn't the best. The only major thing I can think of that is wrong with this phone is that it has a poor speaker, but I typically use headphones or Bluetooth anyways.
You also can't deny that it is a beautiful crafted phone on the exterior. I love the rear glass. My only recommendation is get a clear case lol.
I agree the poll is kinda useless....you either like it or not. It all depends on personal preference

I'm not much of a fan of AMOLED. The colors seem over saturated in my opinion and it's already been shown that AMOLED doesn't affect battery life all that significantly. Despite not having AMOLED, this phone does get pretty good battery life from the 3000 mah.

I honestly don't understand why I thought it would be bad (Probably because I'm not used to Huawei phones in general) but so far it has been super responsive and handles everything I throw at it, the camera is very good in good light (compared to my old phone) but in darker images it is a little bit grainy
But still I love this phone, getting a case in a few days

No desire to switch phones

I'll preface this by saying I'm a habitual phone changer. Typically I keep a phone for no longer than 3 months or so before I really want to switch to something else. Ridiculous I know, but generally something about the phone really bothers me, or another phone looks so incredible that I need to try it out. For the first time in a long time, probably years to be completely honest, I don't feel the need to switch at all. I'm fully happy with this phone. I have a 6p to test new Android versions (piece of garbage phone), but otherwise I'm totally satisfied. Anyone else still love this phone, or are you aching to switch?
Still love my phone. Will probably upgrade to the S9, depending on what the specs etc. are when launched. If I'm not impressed by the specs, I'll stay with S7 Edge
I'd be tempted by a note 7 Fe dual sim if they existed . Apart from that still happy.

My thoughts exactly! S8 and S8+ have the silly fingerprint position and worse battery. Retina scan is the biggest gimmick - less secure, and more annoying to use. Rumour is the fingerprint scanner will be underneath the virtual home button in the S9 ,that would be awesome!
I really loved my Note 7 and the s7e feels a bit of a step back so I've been itching for something new for a while. I was looking forward to the Note 8 but I just can't justify the cost especially since the only thing in it I really want is the telephoto lens. I'm hoping the S9 has the same dual camera setup. If not who knows? Maybe the Note 9...

I never got to try the note 7. What was the major diff that made it feel so much better?
Bigger screen and s pen and more ram I think and faster but not alot bigger in size as I have a dummy one which I used to check the size . Correct me if anything else as I didn't own one myself...

The performance wasn't any better, but just the feel of the phone in your hand was smoother. The curved screen didn't go so far down that you felt like you needed a case to help hold it. The straight lines and larger screen were also a plus. The Note 7 just felt more refined in the hand. For all the grief it gets I also got a lot of use out of the iris recognition too.

Bored of my S9 plus! What phone do I switch too OP6 or P20 Pro

Hey guys, new to all this so go easy on me. Over the past few years I have become a bit of a tech fanatic. I like to get a phone, use for a few months then sell on while it retains value. I'm March I got the S9 Plus coming from a Note 8 and from that coming from an S8 Plus. I love Samsung through heaven and earth but have become slightly bored with their design and UI. I have been strongly considering the Huawei P20 Pro and the OnePlus 6. Can I have your thoughts please? I have read/watch so many reviews on the P20 Pro and it's seems amazing the lag is the main issue as I do now want it. I don't game, I use a phone for emails, text, whatsapp, web browsing, Twitter, Instagram etc. ?

I dont need or want both lol. It's just the lag on the Huawei phones, it's really putting me off at the moment, the old Kirin970 processor too, coming from the Exynos 9810 will feel like a downgrade but then the camera on the P20 will feel like an upgrade. So difficult. The Huawei seems perfect, but the lag and stuttering is a huge dealbreaker for me but I want to know if its as bad as people make our as we all know EMUI isnt the most polished skin.

It makes a lot of sense. I'm trying to get people's views on bith phones. I'm not saying I don't like Huawei either I have spoken seen a lot of people pull up the lag and unresponsiveness of the Huawei, yet I have just spoken to someone who is not a gamer who has had a P20 for 2 months now, uses his phone for what I use my phone for and has had no lag or stuttering what so ever. So im thinking will I even notice a difference coming from the Exynos 9810 to the Kirin970?
There are major cons woth both phones I'm just trying to get peace of mind with both so I can decide with a balanced view.
Thanks

Brother, S9 is a superior phone to both. I understand that you are bored, and that you have disposable income to switch phones at will. Which is why my original suggestion stands - get both. And stop being a little ... nice person.
EDIT: As a side note, there's nothing prettier than the Silk White OP6. Consider that.

I dont really care if the S9+ is more superior. I want a change and I only want one. I don't have disposable income. I sell to then replace, while the S9+ still has value over £500. I do love the one plus 6. But I want my worries addressed.
Battery: Smaller than S9+ - OP has dash charge so is it really a problem.
Speakers: Dual Speakers in S9+ - I mainly use Beats headphones.
Camera: S9+ a better all rounder - OP releasing camera update to make it a lot lot better
IP rating: S9+ IP68 water and dust - OP doesnt but does it really matter. (Although I have seen a few people with issues with dust in the camera.
Now I love the OnePlus 6 held it, feels good, it's an amazing change from the curved designs on Samsung I need a break from them. Then when you use it, the speed is absolutely unbelievable!!
These are my worries I just want peace of mind.

Battery life is really good. Less than 1% for 4 minutes of screen time with autobrightness on.
Screen off drain is inferior with my unit compared to Samsung phones, but I have a bad cellular signal (not with Samsung previously, new carrier with this phone) - therefore more power used by the radio, more drain. About 1% per 2 hours.
Speakers are weak. Not bad, but not great either. Piece of advice, get rid of overpriced junk that is Beats and get real audiophile headphones for the same price and 10 times better sound quality.
Camera is good, but not S9 good. Watch out though, so many reports of bad camera that I think it may be the weakest link in this phone - defective cameras are abound.
The phone is mostly water proof, according to JerryRigEverything YT channel, but it didn't pass the IP67 test, so it's vulnerable to submersions. Splashes, rain, occasional dunk should be just fine.
I think I will stick with the Huawei then purely because of the camera issues then! I love OnePlus, I love the brand and the ethic! I'm hoping the 6T will be a game changer!
Thanks for your time

Did it fail the IP67 test or did they just not pay to have it certified.
I have an S9+ that I gave to someone else in my family as I did not like it. The camera is great but I take very few pictures. For me, I want a rootable device. I also want as close to pure Android as you can get. I had a P10 and sold it within a month. The Huawei OS is horrid. It's like they thought they were making an iPhone.

I do love the OnePlus 6 but I take photos, not thousands but enough to merit wanting a decent camera! I love my S9+ but unfortunately my battery has got worse and worse since I got it in march, and like I said in my first post, since last year I have had the S8+ then the Note8 now the S9+ and it's been basically the same design, and im just so bored of it. Funny you mention the P10, when I got the S8+ last year I keep being pushed by Vodafone to get the P10 but I hated itamd wouldnt get it, the new P20 and the new EMUI is amazing and has changed so much since the P10!!

Neither. I know that "nearly stock" Android, with very few stutter is a very tempting thing but... You'll get a WAY worse screen (don't let anyone tell you the difference is minimal, it's bull****, the difference is huge), you'll get way worse speakers, you'll get a way worse camera, you'll lose the option to charge wireless, you fully lose the vibration motor (the one in the oneplus 6 is so damn awful, you literally won't believe it until you don't feel it, vibration mode is basically useless unless the phone is in your hand or on a surface like glass). The only advantage the OnePlus 6 has is the software. If you were coming from an older phone, I'd absolutely recommend you the OnePlus 6, it's a great phone. But coming from an S9+? You're giving up more than you realize and you're definitely going to regret it after some time.
I was so tempted for OP 6 but the camera is not up to the mark I am using Note 8!

That guy is FOS. Do I need to spell it out what that means?
"WAY worse screen"
Not even close. The screen is excellent. I've used Samsung flagship phones up to Note7, and I have had extensive experience with an S9. Aside from the resolution, the screen is nearly perfect. Beautiful colors, great brightness and in-sun visibility. Everything else - color temp, viewing angles, hues, color reproduction etc. are nearly perfect. Made by Samsung too.
"way worse camera"
Some truth to that. S9 camera is with no match. Even P20 Pro in my opinion is worse. But OP6 camera is not WAY WORSE. That's ridiculous. This man is inebriated with his own flatulence.
" you'll lose the option to charge wireless"
True.
" you fully lose the vibration motor (the one in the oneplus 6 is so damn awful, you literally won't believe it until you don't feel it"
That's just false. No more comments needed. The man is plain wrong.
"but coming from an S9+? You're giving up more than you realize and you're definitely going to regret it after some time."
I loved the S9. But OP6 is also good. Very fast.

Lol. The screen on the S9+ is nowhere near the quality of the OnePlus 6's. Did you read me say that the OnePlus 6's is bad or has any issues with viewing angles and so on? No, you did not. My point was that no matter how good the OnePlus 6's screen is, the S9's ****s on it. It's not just resolution, it's everything, even brightness.

The vibration motor on the OnePlus 6 is crap. Absolutely garbage. Coming from a Galaxy s8, the difference is night and day. The motor on the OnePlus 6 is tiny, weak, soft and it even makes an annoying sound when typing with haptic feedback on. Just google it and see how many more people are complaining about the issue. (The 3T and other OnePlus phones also suffered from this issue).

That was exactly my point. The OnePlus 6 has better, faster software. That's all. In everything else, the S9+ is superior.
The guy asked for an opinion, if you wanna be a blind fanboy, that's fine. But when trying to help someone decide where they'll spend 500$+, either give them fair advice or just stay quiet.
Edit: I missed this one.

Have you ever even looked at raw files produced by both? Have you even done any serious photography with both? I'm not even gonna comment. If you believe the OnePlus 6's camera is anywhere nearly as good as the S9's, you're just delusional.

Who's Getting a Galaxy S10E, S10, S10+ ???

I personally am, only because I'm on T-Mobile JOD to then be able to "Jump" to the Note 10 in August. The S-Pen is very nice, but I can do w/o it for 6 months. I know not everyone has that option depending on the carrier. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts.
Nope, I love my SPen too much, will wait for N10, also, not convinced about the bezelless screen.

How do we know that they won't do the same for the next Note? That whole Camera in the S-Pen thing I keep seeing seems iffy.

The Samsung Galaxy Note Smartphone's fall under the Business/Creativity category, it would be dumb to have a cut out in the display as that kills the S-Pen.. Well that’s how I’m looking at it!
I won't. I like my note a lot. But I may get it for the wife as she is currently on the S9. Not sure what model she will want.
Something about the note 9 feels premium to me vs the S models. I've had all previous S models and you just can't compare the feel of the note with the S models imho.
I got the E 8/256 model. Traded in my 3 XL for it. I never cared for the 3 XL anyways. I think it cost me $250.
No since the Note 9 is my first Note i do not see my self going back to the Galaxy S line.
I am perfectly happy with my Note 8 N950N. I probably won't upgrade to a new model until my device starts to fail.

After watching a few videos of the Samsung Galaxy S10+! Man that camera cut does not look intrusive at all! It’s so subtle i think Samsung has pulled it off! And the OLED screen looks Amazing!

Personally I think the holepunch on the display is not the best idea for a all display all the time immersive experience. I think that Samsung should have continued to use the old design with thin bezels. As that looks much better than having a hole in my display. But who knows maybe when I go to see the promotional event of the SGS10 series, I will change my mind. Afterall I didn't like the idea of not having physical buttons on my devices. Then I got the Note 8 and I have took to it like a fish in water...
I can't jusifty the added cost from my Note 9. First time in a while I'm not in a rush to upgrade.

Yep i kind of agree with you untill seeing the S10+ in flesh cant really say! You seen the new Sony Xperia a1 4K OLED 21.9 ? it looks mental no hole punch i'm really tempted taking the Sony route! But Samsung are awesome as well owning so many samsung gear it kind of hard to let go!

To be honest any who has either a Note 9, one of the SGS9 or even a Note 8 or one of the SGS8 series devices. There really is no point in upgrading to the SGS10 series. Sure there is a bump up in the specs and you get a newer display. But at the end of the day if your current device is still working perfectly fine, what is the point. Save you cash until your device becomes obsolete then upgrade to the latest model.

Adios Pixel Phones

I've had all of the Pixel XL phones since they first were released and was hoping for a nice upgrade with the Pixel 5. After seeing the specs/hardware it unfortunately looks like I'll be searching for something different now, I'm pretty disappointed to say the least.

That's not how you spell childish.
He is right, though. They slashed most of the features, only slightly toned the price down and now we have a phone without real purpose or usage. Its too expensive for its features, much more expensive than the already decent 4a/4a 5g (but costs double/much more) and cannot be considered an upgrade to the pixel 4 (xl). I wonder.

Exactly, maybe $550 would be a more fair price $599 max, it's essentially Google's take on the nord and that's what $450?
@airmax23,
What features or specs were you looking for that the Pixel 5 didn't have?

They pretty much screwed US users with the pricing, unfortunately. In other countries you're looking at the equivalent of $600-650 with $200 of included free stuff.
Not saying it's cheap or even particularly affordable in the other countries, but at least it doesn't feel like you're getting reamed quite as hard.
The purpose, though? Well, it's a mid-range phone with sufficient RAM and storage and an ultrawide camera with Google's software. Wireless charging, hopefully some decent battery life and a bright display. That fixes a lot of the stuff that was annoying about the Pixel 4 (tiny battery, dim display, and no ultrawide camera pretty much made the Pixel 4 a non-starter for me, ESPECIALLY at the flagship price it was commanding back then).
If you don't mind the 6GB of RAM, you can save some cash and just buy the 4a 5G (or even the 4a if you don't need an ultrawide). They've fixed all the crap that was wrong with the Pixel 4 and have offered a range of price points... sure, they've also made mistakes and left a bunch of stuff out, but the MAJOR stuff is there (like the display you can actually use outdoors in sunlight).

Such a witty, well thought out response, thank you for contributing.
Imagine being that much of a narcissistic person you open a thread on a forum announcing that you don't buy a specific phone
LISTEN EVERYBODY, LOOK AT ME!
I'm not buying glasses because I don't have bad eyesight
Still patiently and blissfully waiting to see if anybody cares...

I'm totally with you. I was considering something different as well but what? I'm sure not going to put up with a Samsung phone and I'm definitely not going to switch to an iPhone. I want that pure Google software experience. Not really any other good choice.

It's good to see someone with a brain respond in this thread. My last Samsung phone was the Note 4 and I actually really liked it. I ended up getting a Note 20 Ultra 5G afew days ago and I'm really impressed with it. It's faster/ smoother than the Pixel 4XL and has a bigger/ brighter screen. It's also now possible to root the Verizon Note 20 Ultra which I'll probably do in a few days.

Pixels are not for the weak hearted. If you want to just use social media and play games, get a Samsung or an iPhone.
If you want cutting edge development, get the Pixel.
