In many cases when I want to transfer files wirelessly via apps like SSHDroid (SFTP), other FTP servers or KSWEB (http) or Airdroid, a few minutes after the screen turns off, I cannot transfer files anymore as the connection is down. When I turn on the screen, the connection resumes..
In all these server apps I have enabled Wifi alive (i.e. keep wifi on when screen off), but it presumably it does not work very well.
It appears that the wifi always turns off when the screen is off, regardless of settings.
Is there an app which keeps the wifi alive when the screen is off ? I tried tTorrent running 'dummy' just hoping to keep wifi alive when using one of these file transfer apps, but that does not always work either.
i assume you have the wifi setting to remain on even when in sleep mode?

Of course and I have disabled to kill 'battery consuming' apps, see screenshot of 'Settings => Battery => [cogwheel top right]'.
But the screen is a worst battery hog as using file transfer over wifi requires the screen on.

In WiFi settings, tap on the configure cog wheel icon and change it from there. No need for another app.

Hi All,
A friend of mine got himself a iPhone.
Without customs builds, SDKs, etc... I still think the home
cooked builds for WM are much better.
One thing I envy is that apparently his WiFi is alway on.
Having that on it connects to all the networks it can
saving/speeding lots of data for professional use of
a mobile device (I use it as my mobile office).
What is most desirable is that his battery doesnt
seem to run out any more faster.
I tried to use once with my WM and my device asked for
more juice in 3 hours.
Is there a driver / app that can use the wifi hardware as iPhone does ??
some kind of passive WiFi mode ???
Cheers,
Smartin

I also have a friend with an iPhone right here with me and his does not stay connetcted when the phone is put to sleep mode, well it will stay connected for 30 seconds and then shut down. I verified this by pinging his phone from my PC, after 30 seconds of sleep - no answer and my router lost it from its lists of clients. BUT it was wery quick to aquire the signal after waking up. I then set the IP lease to 3 minutes and put the iPhone to sleep for 5 minutes just to be sure and then it took the usual 5-7 seconds to aquire IP again so it seems to me its using som kind of quick connect settings as long as the lease doesn´t expire.
Hi, I'm having a serious issue here. I unplugged my Transformer from my charger about about 11am today. I have used it, according to the screen on time in the settings, for 34 minutes. (it's now about twelve hours later.) However, the battery life is at 64%. I just don't understand this. My wi-fi is set to disconnect when screen turns off, and brightness is at about 55-60%. But look at this.

Does anybody have a clue what could be going on? If you need more information about what state it is in, I'll be glad to provide more details. It seems like this started after I updated to 3.2, but that could be unrelated.
After updating did you set up the wifi power saving again? There is a bug in android where this setting gets reset when the device is rebooted

Yeah, I double checked when I posted this and it was still on "when screen turns off".
Try using juice defender. And check your running services/applications/auto sync cuz i see there alot of wifi actifity and your device is awaken even though the screen is off.
You could try using an app called Sysem Panel by NextApp.
You will need the paid version so that you can turn on the Monitoring option in the settings - this allows you to monitor the CPU usage over 2h/8h/1d/3d.
You can also monitor Top App usage of CPU which is fantastic for identifying the culprit.
There is a setting under wifi/advanced "Scanning always available", what is its use? I would have thought that programs like Maps, would use it to locate you if you had wifi and GPS off (location set to battery saving). But Maps doesn't do squat unless wifi (or GPS) is actually turned on. "ADM" also doesn't work unless wifi or GPS are actually on (regardless of how scanning box is checked).
All that check box does for me is show wifi being on 100% in battery stats. I turn it off and battery stats bar goes off. But doesn't seem to effect battery either way. So that box makes no sense to me unless it's a bug not working in 4.4 or 4.4.1. Is there any use for it?
Its use, I don't know but it means if the setting is active, wifi is never truly off. Scanning can still happen.

OK, this location stuff is driving me nuts. I have Purity 4.4.1 on both my N7 and N5, no custom kernels. If I open Maps on my N5 with wifi off, it will zoom right in on my location with a blue dot. On my N7, just sits there waiting for location even with wifi on. I notice the wifi/advanced settings are a bit different on each (the n7 missing the frequency band setting), can anyone else confirm this?

Beta on the Play Store
What does it do?
It acts as a sleep timer for the Netflix app, putting it to sleep after a set period of time.
How does it work?
It works by initially lowering the volume and brightness of your display, so you don't get awoken by the sudden silence if you're using it at night. It then closes the Netflix app, puts your display to sleep (by changing the display timeout to it's lowest setting), then puts all your settings (volume etc) back to their original values. Job done.
Why does it need permission to modify system settings?
Two reasons:
It needs this permission to be able lower the screens brightness to gently sleep the Netflix app.
To turn your device off afterwards, the technical choices were either a, set the timeout to the lowest level and let the device put itself to sleep, or b, request device admin permissions to allow the app to manually turn off your screen... I don't know about you but I'm not too keen on giving apps admin access to my device
Known issues
There is currently no way to interrupt the app, so if it triggers at the set time, you just have to wait for it to finish - This will be resolved in the next release.
Just found out the app beta didn't actually publish so no one could download it ??
My bad.. It's up now (link in OP) ?

Hello All,
On both my wife's and my Tmobile S7s running 6.01 on the November security patch, the location services are terrible. The phone keeps thinking I am at my house when I am 20 miles away at work. My wife has the same problem. If I toggle location services off then on, it instantly updates to the correct location. Eventually if defaults back to my house. This wouldn't be such a huge deal if I didn't have a SmartThings home automation system. SmartThings keeps unlocking my front door, turning on lights, and putting the heat back on because according to the phone I am at my house and the automation kicks in. Here is what I have done to try to fix the location issue:
- Location on with method = GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile networks.
- Improved accuracy on with Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth Scanning enabled.
- Under Optimize Battery usage, I have unoptimized Location Services (meaning it should always be running).
Does anyone else have this problem with their S7s? If it were jsut mine, I would chalk it up to a faulty device, but it is happening to my wifes as well. Any other tricks to make this stop happening?
Check your apps to make sure the location permission hasn't been unchecked. Exactly which app could be missing that is hard to say. A factory reset might be your friend for this kind of situation.
