[Q] Google Pixel Buds - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I am wondering if the Google Pixel Buds will be fully functional with the S8+? Specifically the real time translation function. It looks like it only requires a Bluetooth connection and google assistant installed so I would assume it will work with phones other than the Pixel 2. I wouldn't put it past Google to lock it to their flagship device. Anyone know anything?

I'm sure I read the real time translation would work with any device running Nougat and above.

Only Pixel and Pixel 2 will work with that. Everything else works on all modern Android phones.

Bummer
Got a source for that? I can't find anything to suggest the translation will/won't work with non pixel devices.

"¹The Google Assistant on Google Pixel Buds is only available on Android and requires an Assistant-enabled Android device and data connection. Data rates may apply. For available Assistant languages and minimum requirements go to g.co/pixelbuds/help. Requires a Google Account for full access to features. Google Translate on Google Pixel Buds is only available on Pixel."
From here: https://store.google.com/product/google_pixel_buds

Thanks all. Hopefully this is something that they back track on and allow it to be used on other devices.
Until then.... anyone know of someone who might be planning on porting it to the S8? I know its a bit soon.

Is there a hack to make google now work when screen is off?

hi, I read that google now ("ok google") only activates when the screen is on. I was wondering if theres a hack or setting somewhere where you can activate it with the screen off? I mostly want this for hands-free use in the car, so I can avoid having to touch the phone while driving (big no no).
also, is there a site somewhere explaining all the features of what you can say/ask google now? or even a link with comparisons between siri and google now, and what google now cant do that siri does? I ask this cuz ill be coming from iPhone.
thanks.
I think that would really drain the battery - if possible!
However, here is a collection on some of the commands you can ask google now:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961636
I'm really surprised how great it works! And i live in Denmark, where i can't even take full use of everything
samsung has had this with s-voice. and i think motorola enabled google now to do this on the motox but i'm not sure. yes it drains battery, but how much? depends on the cpu and driver and the software involved..... i don't have my nexus yet so i can't say "how" to do this but i would expect it to be an eventual custom feature if not a future update if it's not already in a setting somewhere.

Everything I've read has claimed that the Nexus 5 should handle this as well as MotoX since it has the Snapdragon 800. Have we ever gotten an official answer on why this won't work?

hey thanks for the link. battery drain wouldn't be too much of an issue, as usually I would just use it while the device is being charged in my car, but it would be nice to use sometimes without as well, and while leaving the screen on would be nice, a slow charging car charger, is going to charge faster with the screen off, as that's usually the most power hungry lol. so it would be nice to have the voice activation at will while using.
If some of the launcher/search code was open source, I'd imagine this would be quite easy to do.
Pretty sure I read somewhere that the 'always listening' (for "OK Google" command) requires some hardware functionality. So no, it would not be possible like it is on the Moto X.

i'd imagine you could port parts of the moto x rom into the nexus. things like this have been done before. just have to find all the dependancies.

I mean, if you had access to the facilities used by the n5 launcher source, you could likely utilize them when screen is off via software pretty easily.

Yes. But from what I understand the snapdragon 800 has that hardware built in.

Video is about 1/2 way down on the right. Processor is capable.
Lets see if I can't clear things up. If you want your phone to be always listening, you need hardware support for it unless you want your phone to die in a matter of hours. If you are okay with this , check out this app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.RSen.OpenMic.Pheonix It also lets you configure things like only when charging or just when the screen is on to save some battery, and its actually a very nice app overall. Worth checking out.
The Moto x has a special custom chip set that allows for this always listening. Any attempt to port that feature from the Moto x would fail, as the Nexus 5 doesn't have the same chip set. The nexus 5 however, does have hardware that allows for always listening, its part of the Snapdragon 800 SOC that powers this phone, along with the Note 3 and LG G2.
But getting the feature to actually work on our phones, even with the hardware, is by no means an easy task. Read the comments on this post if you want to get an idea for what this entails. https://plus.google.com/112424215551484520138/posts/AznwFxbBapJ
So is it possible? Yes. But it is not something that is gonna be a quick easy port of small modification of an existing app, it would take some real serious work form (maybe a team even of) good Dev's to make this function.
Sorry if its not the news you wanted to hear.
Well now it's been more than a year since this thread is dead but i bought my N5 recently and i wonder is there any progress in this matter will it be possible ? (G+ comments on link provided by above like shows it may be possible...as SD800 has privilege for it but at time of this thread it was only available to OMEs so it made public yet ? ) . did any dev tried to dig into this matter ?

If you're plugged in/wireless charging Google Now Voice commands work with the screen off.
Settings>Language & Input > Voice Input> Enhanced Google services> "OK Google" Detection>From any screen> enabled
"responds to your voice. Works when the screen is on or the device is charging."
make sure the next option "personal results" is also enabled if you want Google Now to be able to do anything
Try this app, Open Mic+. It'll do the job.

Anyone try installing Google Assistant and/or Pixel Launcher

Has anyone tried this? is it worth messing with. I like having a nice weather widget like LG does but miss being able to swipe right for google now.
Just a little worried since we can't reflash stock. Does anyone know anyone who has tried this even not on this device? does it cause issues?
Get the Google Now launcher. I'm running it right now and it works fine. I tried the Pixel Launcher on my Nexus 6 and it felt like a step backwards since you have to have a Pixel to use it fully.
I am using Google Assistant with the help of an app on the play store that changes the build.prop.

I did it yesterday and it's a pretty neat upgrade. One caveat, they tell you to change two lines in the prop.build for the tmobile variant it's actually 3.
ro.product.model=Pixel XL
ro.opa.eligible_device=true
the one they forgot to add for us was
ro.product.brand=google
For us it had been =LG918 and it wouldn't enable until i changed that too.

So when you did this, does the phone think it's a pixel now, or still a v20?

I did. If you restart/factory reset your phone it will think your phone is a pixel and remove all your LG apps. The assistant is nice but your sacrificing some apps.

Do you have issues setting alarms? and did you need to install velvet.apk. some guides say you need to add it and some dont mention it. I tried just the build prop edits and assistant seemed to work but it wont set alarms with LGs clock app it wants me to install another clock app

LOL. NO. I was playing with my zmaxpro running marshmallow. There is an option to run ok google from any screen.
I then went to google assistant website and tried ALL the commands. IT works!!
I can't believe how google capitalize on this google assistant feature to sell their overpriced pixel phone.
There is NOTHING a google assistant can do that an ok google command can't!!! For serious. I am mad right now for some reason.
Gosh I hate capitalism I can ALWAYS see through it. And I KNOW I can always get it for free by adding that feature myself.

What I am basically saying is Google assistant is an over priced, over glorified, over hyped, OK Google command feature LITERALLY!!! And I am not even rooted. Shaking my head with people who believe ALL the hype.

I actually installed allo to try google assistant there. The games are actually good but those are the games they have when they have occasions to celebrate like I played the beethoven game and I remember it's exactly that beethoven game they have on beethoven's birthday or something long time ago. And for some reason the audio and video quality on my phone sucks playing it.
I did try mad libs it just gives me search result for it. Still, ok google does what google assistant does minus the games. And ok google talks back to you. google assistant does not talk back in allo. I think it talks back to you in pixel?

The full Google Assistant really is just an enhanced Google Now/On Tap. Now does basic things like carry out specific requests and make searches, but GA is a full-on assistant, with conversations, games, even a pretty well-done context engine.
I've used Siri for iOS 6-9, and I can say that Google has managed to beat a ~7 year old personal assistant with something barely out of infancy. Sure, maybe you might not like either one, but I like to have fun and try to find out what my phone can do.

Dont work for me at all, and the weird thing is dosent work on google pixel 4a either both stock - both android 11 - i did phone oneplus they said it was a software issue and google pay not compatable which lead me to buying the pixel 4a thinking it would work but it dosent - all that happens is the POS machine beeps and then just keep beeping - can add card - bank verifies card - submitted logs to google - waiting on there repsonse - thing is if i use wear os watch it works also works on s10 , realme 6pro , relame x50 5g , also pixle 3axl on lineage OS - if you do a search for gpay app and take a look atr german and russin forum its littered with app not working but nothing for the uk , tried uninsallting ,reinstalling ,clearing app cache and storgar nothing works - oneplus nord & pixel 4a both new phones no root no custom rom - so jsut dosent work for what ever reason .
It worked for me in the past on old phone. So it's not about anything outside the phone, both sim and bank cards have worked.
And like you mention everything works except for paying that fails instantly.
Works fine here.
doesn't work for me

After some time, I tested it today, and it was working fine.
The NFC antenna is at the top side of the phone, where the cameras are. So I placed that part on the terminal and it was paid.

You are right, removed all the cards. And started all over... and indeed it started to work again. Amazing. Thanks!

Google Photos - Non-Stock

Hey guys,
Recently bought a Pixel 1 phone when the announcement of unlimited Google photos was brought up.
My thoughts was I'd use it as a device to upload photos taken on my other camera's .
After using the device, I've taken quite a liking to it given how light it is.
My question is.
If I install TWRP and a custom rom - will Google photos still treat 'uploading' as if I was on a stock pixel phone and not count the upload to my Google account quota?
Thanks.
I got the same question. Does anyone know?
So I installed Lineage OS 17.1 with GAPS on my Pixel 1 XL, and after downloading Google Photos from the play-store, the Photos app has a message stating "...back up from you Pixel 3 device in Original quality are free and unlimited until February 1, 2022."
Pixel 3 ??? How does that happen?
Does anyone else experience this?

This has some useful info on it - https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/guide-how-to-edit-build-prop-on-any-android-device.1948558/
But basically install an app like this - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.build.prop.editor&hl=en&gl=US
And spit out here what's in the build prop file and we'll see if there's any tell-tale signs of what's causing it to come up as a GP3

I guess I'll have to root and try it. I was just surprised that the official Lineage OS for the Pixel 1 XL is set to mimic a Pixel 3 - or maybe this is a bug.
So would this same method of changing the props.xml file to Pixel 1 work on a Pixel 4A and allow for unlimited photo storage?

that's the million dollar question isn't it!
Android 11 and unlimited uploads is where I'd like to be!
Phew, glad I saw this thread. I, too got a used Pixel 1 for unlimited original photo storage (I had a Pixel 1 XL when it came out but no longer). My plan was to install Lineage after I saw this comment on reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/LineageOS/comments/942cq8/_/e3hsbsw
But I'm glad I saw this thread! I'll keep it on stock for now
Hello. this is one of the top options while searching on Google for this question, so I figured I'd share my findings with you.
The short answer is that yes, it does support unlimited uploads. You're probably better off not installing opengapps though, as that will make Google treat your device as a Pixel 3. Install Aurora Store and then install Google Photos from that and it should Just Work™.
