Anyone try installing Google Assistant and/or Pixel Launcher - LG V20 Guides, News, & Discussion

Has anyone tried this? is it worth messing with. I like having a nice weather widget like LG does but miss being able to swipe right for google now.
Just a little worried since we can't reflash stock. Does anyone know anyone who has tried this even not on this device? does it cause issues?

Get the Google Now launcher. I'm running it right now and it works fine. I tried the Pixel Launcher on my Nexus 6 and it felt like a step backwards since you have to have a Pixel to use it fully.

I am using Google Assistant with the help of an app on the play store that changes the build.prop.

I did it yesterday and it's a pretty neat upgrade. One caveat, they tell you to change two lines in the prop.build for the tmobile variant it's actually 3.
ro.product.model=Pixel XL
ro.opa.eligible_device=true
the one they forgot to add for us was
ro.product.brand=google
For us it had been =LG918 and it wouldn't enable until i changed that too.

I think you're right...it didn't immediately work for me so i tried several things in parallel. After going back and changing ro.product.brand=lg i kept Google Assistant without issue.

So when you did this, does the phone think it's a pixel now, or still a v20?
Sent from my LG-H918 using XDA-Developers mobile app

I did. If you restart/factory reset your phone it will think your phone is a pixel and remove all your LG apps. The assistant is nice but your sacrificing some apps.

Do you have issues setting alarms? and did you need to install velvet.apk. some guides say you need to add it and some dont mention it. I tried just the build prop edits and assistant seemed to work but it wont set alarms with LGs clock app it wants me to install another clock app

LOL. NO. I was playing with my zmaxpro running marshmallow. There is an option to run ok google from any screen.
I then went to google assistant website and tried ALL the commands. IT works!!
I can't believe how google capitalize on this google assistant feature to sell their overpriced pixel phone.
There is NOTHING a google assistant can do that an ok google command can't!!! For serious. I am mad right now for some reason.
Gosh I hate capitalism I can ALWAYS see through it. And I KNOW I can always get it for free by adding that feature myself.
S.E.R.I.O.U.S.L.Y.!!
What I am basically saying is Google assistant is an over priced, over glorified, over hyped, OK Google command feature LITERALLY!!! And I am not even rooted. Shaking my head with people who believe ALL the hype.

Tell Google Now to play a Mad Libs. The games in Google Assistant are what make me want it. I have it on my Note 4, but getting it on the V20 would be nice too.

I actually installed allo to try google assistant there. The games are actually good but those are the games they have when they have occasions to celebrate like I played the beethoven game and I remember it's exactly that beethoven game they have on beethoven's birthday or something long time ago. And for some reason the audio and video quality on my phone sucks playing it.
I did try mad libs it just gives me search result for it. Still, ok google does what google assistant does minus the games. And ok google talks back to you. google assistant does not talk back in allo. I think it talks back to you in pixel?

The full Google Assistant really is just an enhanced Google Now/On Tap. Now does basic things like carry out specific requests and make searches, but GA is a full-on assistant, with conversations, games, even a pretty well-done context engine.
I've used Siri for iOS 6-9, and I can say that Google has managed to beat a ~7 year old personal assistant with something barely out of infancy. Sure, maybe you might not like either one, but I like to have fun and try to find out what my phone can do.

Is there a hack to make google now work when screen is off?

hi, I read that google now ("ok google") only activates when the screen is on. I was wondering if theres a hack or setting somewhere where you can activate it with the screen off? I mostly want this for hands-free use in the car, so I can avoid having to touch the phone while driving (big no no).
also, is there a site somewhere explaining all the features of what you can say/ask google now? or even a link with comparisons between siri and google now, and what google now cant do that siri does? I ask this cuz ill be coming from iPhone.
thanks.
I think that would really drain the battery - if possible!
However, here is a collection on some of the commands you can ask google now:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961636
I'm really surprised how great it works! And i live in Denmark, where i can't even take full use of everything
samsung has had this with s-voice. and i think motorola enabled google now to do this on the motox but i'm not sure. yes it drains battery, but how much? depends on the cpu and driver and the software involved..... i don't have my nexus yet so i can't say "how" to do this but i would expect it to be an eventual custom feature if not a future update if it's not already in a setting somewhere.

Everything I've read has claimed that the Nexus 5 should handle this as well as MotoX since it has the Snapdragon 800. Have we ever gotten an official answer on why this won't work?

hey thanks for the link. battery drain wouldn't be too much of an issue, as usually I would just use it while the device is being charged in my car, but it would be nice to use sometimes without as well, and while leaving the screen on would be nice, a slow charging car charger, is going to charge faster with the screen off, as that's usually the most power hungry lol. so it would be nice to have the voice activation at will while using.
If some of the launcher/search code was open source, I'd imagine this would be quite easy to do.
Pretty sure I read somewhere that the 'always listening' (for "OK Google" command) requires some hardware functionality. So no, it would not be possible like it is on the Moto X.

I mean, if you had access to the facilities used by the n5 launcher source, you could likely utilize them when screen is off via software pretty easily.

Yes. But from what I understand the snapdragon 800 has that hardware built in.

http://www.qualcomm.com/snapdragon/processors/800
Video is about 1/2 way down on the right. Processor is capable.
Lets see if I can't clear things up. If you want your phone to be always listening, you need hardware support for it unless you want your phone to die in a matter of hours. If you are okay with this , check out this app. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.RSen.OpenMic.Pheonix It also lets you configure things like only when charging or just when the screen is on to save some battery, and its actually a very nice app overall. Worth checking out.
The Moto x has a special custom chip set that allows for this always listening. Any attempt to port that feature from the Moto x would fail, as the Nexus 5 doesn't have the same chip set. The nexus 5 however, does have hardware that allows for always listening, its part of the Snapdragon 800 SOC that powers this phone, along with the Note 3 and LG G2.
But getting the feature to actually work on our phones, even with the hardware, is by no means an easy task. Read the comments on this post if you want to get an idea for what this entails. https://plus.google.com/112424215551484520138/posts/AznwFxbBapJ
So is it possible? Yes. But it is not something that is gonna be a quick easy port of small modification of an existing app, it would take some real serious work form (maybe a team even of) good Dev's to make this function.
Sorry if its not the news you wanted to hear.

If you're plugged in/wireless charging Google Now Voice commands work with the screen off.
Settings>Language & Input > Voice Input> Enhanced Google services> "OK Google" Detection>From any screen> enabled
"responds to your voice. Works when the screen is on or the device is charging."
make sure the next option "personal results" is also enabled if you want Google Now to be able to do anything
Try this app, Open Mic+. It'll do the job.

[XPosed Mod] HiGoogle - "Hi Galaxy" phrase opens Google Now instead of S-Voice

[XPosed Mod] HiGoogle - "Hi Galaxy" phrase opens Google Now instead of S-Voice
I present to you: my first ever XPosed Mod HiGoogle!
It's really my first original android app. The first one I didn't follow some sort of tutorial to make anyways. It opens Google Now natively when you say "Hi Galaxy" instead of the crappy S-Voice app. It took me forever to get this done, but in the end I learned a ton about how both Android and XPosed work. :good: So w00t for me, :good: chalk that one up as a personal accomplishment.
Anyways, it still needs S-Voice to run. S-Voice is what controls the always listening feature of the phone. in the future I plan on changing that, and perhaps changing the trigger phrase as well (fingers crossed!) So while we can't get rid of S-Voice yet, this removes the need to use a middle-man app like tasker to open it, which in the end, makes things a hair faster (and $6 cheaper.) I think we can all agree that faster is better.
So while it's not the perfect solution yet, it's a move in the right direction and hopefully more will come of it.
This has only been tested on 2 Notes so far, a T-Mo and a VZW, but it should work on any Samsung with 'Hi Galaxy" always listening support. I'm personally on version 11.2.2.0 of S-Voice but I'm not sure if that matters. Report any issues or and I will try to deal with them as fast as I can.
It's not my fault if you break stuff.
:good: <------ Hit my donate button and buy me a bud if you like it!:good:
Here's the sauce: https://github.com/Bots/HiGoogle
Oh and thanks to user runnirr for helping me

No, currently it just opens Google Now over SVoice, as SVoice is what controls the service that listens for commands. I'll look into that though it's a good idea, I may be able to kill the app but leave the service running.
oh so sad so so sad... i thougth you are a magician and managed to change the Voice recognition phrase...The developer Skilllevel for that is like getting knox from 0x1 to 0x0....from what i've heard
There are already apps for your purposes. I use S for Switch Voice
But thank you very much for your developing and sharing. :good:
Instead you maybe could try to get the "OK Google" command working for German and every other language. Because when google fails with recognition you have to grab your phone and tap on the mic button or wait until the screen shuts down. It is only possible when Google now language is english. This is something which really annoyes...

That all depends. I found some type of file that looks like it might be some kind of a raw audio or a wav file possibly. I'm digging deeper into Samsung's code whenever I have time trying to understand what's going on. I'm gonna have to keep studying before I can get to that point, but I think that will be part of the natural progression of the updates to this app. Has Chainfire done any work on this?

No not that i've heard of. Today i recognized that the "Google Now launcher" works with "OK Google" in german. So maybe you can find something when making a code comparison to use the OK Google command no matter how your phone and or googles now language is...

As of now, overhead.
This mod will rid you of one extra service running on your phone compared to those other apps. If all you want is Google Now instead of S-Voice then this is probably the better solution. If you want a bunch more options, use one of those other apps. I have more plans for the future but I was super excited to release my first contribution to the community :victory:
I think is a great idea. I for one have been using an app called S for Switch Voice that overrides SVoice and launches Google Now. It works great and dont have any problems and doesn't cause much or at the very least battery drain. But im willing to try this.

[Q] Google Now Launcher APK?

Perhaps a noob question but I figured I might as well ask before trying it and messing something up.
Is there a Google Now Launcher APK that's been confirmed to work on the G3? all the APKs I find are in articles and links from months ago and I just want to have the most recent information and APK(s) available.
Loving the G3 just would like Google Now Launcher and preferably the n5 dialer/camera apps. If all this is located somewhere and I'm just being an idiot, please point me in the right direction.
Thanks,

Ya Infact this is the 1st oneplus phone with ok google working with screen off
It's strange for me that this is news because I've been using custom romsnfor so long that had this implementated. It's a good feature
I think the idle drain will be about the higher than without it (this is what I have noticed) but it's not massive so definitely a recent trade off if you like the service. I have a few Google homes and they all pick up my voice but then it knows from which device to reply from based on what's nearest to you.
I've used this mainly for turning on Bluetooth and setting navigation whilst driving. Also asking questions whilst driving that I want the answer to.

I doubt if custom roms would make any difference. I have used oneplus 1 and op3 but none of the custom roms for these devices had this feature.. Interesting point you made about multiple Google homes devices and the nearest one reverts back.. Didn't know this..

If sommone Not Getting beep sound while assistant wakeups you need to enable Switch acess in accesability settings
Settings> andance> accesability >switchacess

I have been using this for several weeks on 10 and I think it works great. It is a little confusing on the setup, but not too bad.

How you finding the battery drain? I've heard some say it's fine and others say that it's a hog.

No battery drain at all! Now if you left your phone with the edge lighting going for a "long" time....not sure. But as it is I have no battery drain at all from this app.

Good stuff. Does Google assistant work when you say "ok google"? It's a problem with a lot of apks like NotifyBuddy etc, so looking for an alternative.

Sorry but I don't ever talk to my phone...seems silly to me... unless I am driving and "need" to reply to a text, then Textra with Gboard does it for me.

Fair enough. I find it extremely handy when on the go.

Edit: Resolved - For over 10 years, I have been using the BACK button to close activities. All of them. When I want to return to the launcher, I just press BACK from withing the given app until I get 'back' to the launcher. Why wouldn't I do this? It's how you close an app. Well, I hit the HOME button instead of using BACK to exit the app gracefully like I do for all other apps I run.. and.. AOE works. I don't get it. I'm not much of an Android developer, and I hate everything Google has done to Android in the last 5 years, but what gives here? I assume (and I can see) that the backgroud service still runs after the activity closes, so why would I want to leave the activity open and return to the launcher without gracefully closing the current activity? Anyway.. if I leave the activity open, it seems to work as expected, but not if I close the activity. Go figure.

I am using Resurrection Remix 8.6.7 on OnePlus 7 Pro. I've tried Plus Beat, True Edge, and now Always On Edge. I can't get any of them to work. Plus Beat came the closest by repeatedly flashing the lock screen, but I really want to use AOE and I would like to see the edge 'horizon' lights. I've given AOE every permission and accessibility service I know how to, and it still does not work.
Is it possible to use AOE on One Plus 7 Pro with Resurrection Remix 8.6.7 (Android Q10 based, and goes on top of OOS 10.3.8)?
