Overall speed - Google Pixel 2 XL Real Life Review

Would you say that the Google Pixel 2 XL is "fast" in day-to-day use? A higher rating indicates that you think the Google Pixel 2 XL exhibits fantastic performance. Like, is it as fast as your tears when you watch The Titanic?
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Blazing fast phone. Scrolling is buttery smooth, with none of the lag from the bad old Samsung Touchwiz days. I am coming from Nexus 6P, which was no slouch, but this one is super fast.

fastest, smoothest phone
We have two Pixel 2's and also my Pixel 2 XL -- these are spectacularly fast and smooth -- lag free.

Faster than a speeding bullet ? or greased lightening

Super fast! Love it!

Fastest android phone to date i love it, come from the Nexus 6P and One plus 3T which i still own but the pixel xl 2 is just superior.

Super smooth and fast.. esp with animations set to .5s in developer options!!

Has anyone else noticed a sudden perfomance boost as of today? Not only does my 2XL feel much more snappy, also battery life seems to have increased a lot! The phone has never been a slouch to begin with, I don't know why but the little frame drops I have felt since the beginning of owning the phone are completely eliminated . It's like having a new phone I have to say and it feels so relieving haha. I kind of can rule out an app causing the phone to drop frames since I factory resetted it so many times by now and running with basically no apps. I have no idea which update caused to boost my Pixel but I'm so happy haha
Edit: Even my Nexus 6P feels much snappier, lol

Hi, it's not just you I have the same Feeling today and surprise I go to development options and I don't know how but I found animations speed set to 0.5x I certainly did not change anything myself.

Same, it feels like it's been getting better overall since the November update. Or at least more consistent if nothing else. I'm definitely happy about it!

I see people bring that up a lot, I haven't noticed much of problem. But I also don't heavily multi-task. Tbh I'm also not sure I know exactly what people are experiencing...

The main point is that when I use the camera application, most of my background applications are stopped. Spotify stops playing music, accubattery resets statistics and most applications when recalling them from the last open list loads as if they were first opened.

I have app refreshes but I've never had something in the background like Google Play Music or YouTube close out on me. Although, I literally never take pictures while having either in the background and I do know the camera uses a lot of RAM especially when rendering somthing like a portrait photo.

Wow that's actually pretty terrible, I don't think I've ever experienced it that bad. But I did just test what you said with the camera and it's definitely clearing some ram from my other apps but they are reloading back to where I left off which is probably why I've never noticed it, but music didn't stop for me.

I bet it does have mostly to do with all the features the app has, it probably needs all the ram it can get now.

Screen Resolution

So I'm considering getting the Skyrocket and I currently have an Atrix but I'm worried about the screen resolution on the Skyrocket since it's 800X480. Will this make a big difference coming from Atrix (540X960)? I also heard about screen burn in on the Skyrocket, how true is this?
Everything is pretty big, i used to hate it but i got used to the resolution and now its fine. you can always change it too. 180-200 looks really nice.
And i don't notice any burn in, but when my whole screen turns black i notice faint marks... they aren't really a problem and it has never affected me when the screen is showing something.

I hate it when everything is big and takes up half the screen. I don't have this problem with the Atrix and this is the only thing that's preventing me from getting the Skyrocket.

If you Google "sgs2 screen burn in" or "super amoled plus burn in" you will that a lot of people have this problem. The only reason why I'm asking is because one of my friends said they degrade very quickly over short period of time.

Oh, well if you hate the atrix, nevermind. No the rocket does not overheat. Most of the time I run it underclocked, though. But when I run games and stuff I am usually OC to over 1700mhz. I run more for battery life than intensive games most of the time. It gets warm if you're running the charger and playing games or running gps.

I guess I should mention the "screen lines" issue. If you turn the brightness way down some have vertical lines. Some have it worse than others. Mine is very faint.
There's not much I dislike about it. I am patiently waiting for A final build of AOKP, CM9. We have very good dev support, not as much as the international gs2, but I am pleased with our forum.
Some can't seem to get very good battery life, but I run 24 hours+ no problem with over 5 hours screen on time. This all comes down to your ability to tweak custom kernels and how you let apps run.
GPS is good, bluetooth could be better but I don't use it, speaker phone is good, battery is great for me, music playback apparently doesn't cut for "audiophiles" but I'm perfectly happy with it. Thats all I got for now
I must not be thinking of the same "screen burn in" I've had my skyrocket since release and its always had the artifacts when the screen is totally black. There not that noticeable. I haven't noticed any burn in though.

[Q] Why is my HOXL so laggy? (ViperXL 2.20)

Hey guys,
My HOXL is currently running ViperXL 2.20, the Beast Mode Kernel at 1.8ghz and -25mv undervolting, sweep2wake and sweep2unlock enabled, as well as aznrice's audio mods. (VooDoo Mode). I'm using the SIO scaler and the smartassv2 governor, occasionally intellidemand.
The thing dun lags. It's slow, unresponsive, choppy. It seems as though my free ram gets eaten up rather quickly, but I get general lag even when it's empty. I don't use any task killers either, I let android take care of that part.
I get wake lag, homescreen lag (Apex Launcher Pro), lag when launching apps, lag while scrolling through apps, just lag. My quadrant is great, in the upper 5000 range, but that doesn't reflect real world performance at all.
It seems as though the lag comes and goes. One minute it'll be fine and fairly responsive, and the next minute it won't. It's usually the latter though. I've tried clean flashing the rom, no success.
What could be wrong here? I played with the HOX+ at AT&T today and I loved it, but I'm reluctant to buy it because of the T3's horrendous DAC. I was even thinking of just going for a Galaxy Note II, and I hate Samsung.
Thanks in advance.
Buy a new phone when you mess yours up?..where have I read this before......?hmm..I do not get any lag whatsoever on viper. Have you even tried reflashing, changing back to stock, factory reset etc.. are you past your 30 Days...by the way new phones come out every month literally so their will always be one faster. You just seem like the person who switches phones because the phone you have you caused the problems...

Not quite. The HOXL's measly 16gb of memory is killing me, otherwise I love the phone. I'm just in the position to sell the HOXL for double what I paid, get a new phone using someone else's line (because they don't want to upgrade...lol) and profit The only reason I'm not jumping into this decision is because I'd like to see what comes in the next few months. 64gb is awesome though. I got my HOXL on launch day, so I'm way past the 30 day window. I do realize that phones will just become faster, but I'm not too big on the lag I'm seeing here that often makes the phone unusable. It's pretty bad dude.
I've tried reflashing, factory reset numerous times, nothing. Initially, the phone will be snappy as usual, but over the course of a couple of days the lag just comes back. Then again, I was comparing ICS to the smoothness of JB on the HOX+. This lag I'm getting is just something I haven't seen happen before. What kernel are you using? Governor, etc? OC/UV?
Viper has been pretty zippy for me lately...avoid restore system apps...if you're reporting this after a couple hours of usage...wait a couple days and than report back

I only restore my user apps and data, never the system stuff. This is after a week or two of usage, I started using Viper when it was on 1.2.4 a little while ago. The incremental updates did speed it up a bit, but my phone seems to be "choking" to get things done.
Trust me you'll see another jaw dripping HTC released around April I say it even sooner so if you can wait with your one xl you'll have a very good phone.... The one x+ does seem very tempting though

That's why I'm holding off a bit lol. I'm assuming that in the near future, Android will match up to/efficiently use the hardware being delivered, essentially becoming synergistic.
Using viper xl with the total opposite of your experience man, try to flash the elemental kernel. Im using it with noop.scheduler and intellidemand governor with UC to 1,3ghz and it has NEVER, for real, been lagged once

I would not buy anything new right now. Wait until we get a GSM version of the Droid DNA, which makes the One X+ look outdated already.

Have you ever been satisfied with the responsiveness of the phone on a stock rom or was it always choppy as you feel it is now?
When it was bone dry stock, it was quick and responsive, felt like JB even. Not so much anymore though.
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda premium
i found at&t stock, debloating it myself with some minor mods to be faster then most of the sense roms i've tried
Hmm i had a bit of lag on viper xl 1.x series then i went cm10 to dirty rom had no speed issues on the aosp side just a bit more battery drain compared to the sense roms but my multitasking is more realistic on the aosp side imo. I would say try cleanrom always loved it for closer to bare bones experience.
Me too
I've experienced the exact same issue, although mine ran fine for the first week or so, and then started taking a ****. Stock stays fast, Viper after the first week or two regardless of kernel and cpu speed starts to lag. I've tried CM10 which speed wise is fine (buggy as all hell for me though, no offence CM dev's.. you need more time/source) and doesn't seem to slow down. So far I've flashed CleanRom and IMO it's night and day compared to Viper. Maybe try that?

Scrolling smoothness

Some phones exhibit choppy scrolling, especially when navigating long web pages when multiple apps are running in the background. Rate this thread to express how you smooth scrolling feels on the Samsung Galaxy S8 under such conditions. A higher rating indicates that scrolling is always buttery smooth, even when you're reading a 10,000 word article on "how to kiss a girl".
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Lags and stutters :| not horribly though! it's like console compared to a PC (iPhone and others being a PC ok maybe more like 144hz compared to 30-60fps )
I am also interested why every android while using data lags.
With chrome browser things are a bit better. Defenetly the stutter is there but not as persistant as it is on the stock internet explorer.
As a mobile dev in a first phase I thought it was caused by the app I was working on, but I can definitely say that this stuttering is actually a system-wide issue with the S8
It's probably related to the Samsung's Android ROM; I'd love to hear feedback from ppl with custom ROMs, I'm quite confident they don't have this kind of issue.
No scroll stutter in anything except facebook app and playstore which forced me to actually use facebook via chrome and the problem was solved. I have disabled a whole bunch of services and other apps and it helped quite much.
A tip for chrome users is to enable data saver built in option and use adblock. Ads these days are one of the main causes of stutter in web browsing.

Jittery/laggy scrolling

Hi, I just got a OP6 on Friday and it really is an amazing device, but no matter what app I'm in, I get extremely stuttery/jittery scrolling. It happens in Settings, Chrome, XDA, basically anything that has a list or scrolls. Is there any way to fix this? I'm on OxygenOS 5.1.9, I've tried rooting and installing kernels and I keep having the same problem. Is this a known issue? Because it's kinda ridiculous to pay over $500 for a phone that scrolls worse than my 2 year old pixel. So if anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
try doing a cache clean or fresh install because this isn't normal and it should run smooth like mine does.

I've done a full install from fastboot, but I'll wipe cache and see if that helps, thank you.
I noticed it as well.
Franco Kernel helped a bit, especially using Pixel launcher (which is buttery smooth on the Pixel 2)
But the phone isn't as smooth as a Pixel 2 or iPhone X in terms of scrolling inside apps or even launcher.
It shows some frame drops regardless if rooted or not. Seen the same on another OP6 (mine has 128gb his has 64gb).
Clearing cache probably won't help.
Here's to hope the Android P update helps.
And use Samsung Browser instead of Chrome.
Way smoother

Definitely agree also seeing jittery scrolling, custom kernels do help a bit but it's still there.

Yh, you definitely have to see it in relation to other devices. Me coming from Touchwiz devices, the phone feels amazing, but knowing how buttery smooth an iPhone X is or Pixel 2 was, it's not that amazing anymore.

I thought it weas just me but I notice the jittery when scrolling slowly in chrome or the android central app. Its not bad, but noticeable.
Test
This has been present in every OnePlus device since the 3/3T. It's an Oxygen OS issue.
But it's good that more people are finally noticing it, as there's a chance that it'll be fixed... You'll just have to pay for the OnePlus 7 to get that fix
Even a Samsung S8 has smoother scrolling sadly. It's quite annoying. Using a different browser isn't a solution, as I rely a lot on Chrome anyway, but it also runs smoothly on many Android One devices such as the Nokia 7 Plus.
The P beta had the same poor scrolling performance, but hopefully they at least try to fix it for the final version. It's the least smooth device I've used in the last 2 years, but also the fastest... So you can kinda see where their priorities lie. They'd take an extra 0.049ms faster app opening time over 60fps scrolling.
Hi all, I came from a series of Xiaomi Phones (Redmi, MiMax etc.) - and I find the scrolling very smooth. Maybe just some devices have this problem? I have hovewer jittery backlight when in night mode (see my other post) which is bothering me quite a bit
I remembered this being a hot topic before. Wasn't the "solution" to set the CPU governor to be Conservative instead?

Apparently not anymore because that made it a bit worse lol. Considering selling the device because it's kinda ridiculous to have top specs and such poor scrolling performance.
I'm having no scrolling problems... And I had the pixel 2 XL and that **** was laggy.
Same problem here, been jittery since day one for me, and I got mine as soon as it released. Was thinking about returning it, but then decided that it was probably due to my over-sensitive eyes. The smoothest rom that I have tried was OmniRom. It's actually a decent rom, but single touch responsiveness was bad for me. I would sometimes have to touch the screen a few times just for the touch to register. Right now I'm using franco kernel in performance mode with fsync disabled on RiCE 4.4 and it's a little better.

Came around with these settings while using profile gpu rendering:
Dynamic Stune Boost 1
GPU governor: cpufreq
What that basically does is boosting the CPU slightly more while touch input and kinda syncing gpu boost with the now higher CPU boost.
According to the Profile GPU overlay the stutters are greatly reduced, especially in lawnchair Launcher (App drawer animation) and Facebook.
All using Franco kernel V4
Worst kernel I've tried was Smurf kernel with some extreme frame drops.

Touch input lag

I was reading the OP8T reddit posts and one of them mentioned a general touch input lag while scrolling. Is this something anyone here has experienced. It sounds like something that would be irritating and I'm wondering if it's widespread. https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePlus8T/comments/jmngbm/general_touch_lag_all_around_the_system/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
The main reason I'm unfortunately returning mine. It's very fast with opening apps and what not but scrolling is very much lackluster compared to the 7Pro for example

I was reading the OP8T reddit posts and one of them mentioned a general touch input lag while scrolling. Is this something anyone here has experienced. It sounds like something that would be irritating and I'm wondering if it's widespread. https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePlus8T/...stem/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

I see no lag anywhere.

Same. Probably better after some more updates or roms for those who are experiencing it
I will say that scrolling in apps seems significantly slower than on my pixel 2 xl, which is odd given the fact that everything else on the oneplus 8t blows the 2XL out of the water. On my phone, it doesn't feel like any sort of a touch lag issue, but more like the operating system has just throttled scrolling speeds for some reason.

That's very well said. It's not really a lag but scrolling isn't as fast/smooth.
You think this is something that can be fixed via software or are we screwed?
Yeah so I just received my OP8T.. Twitter and longer web pages definitely feel less snappy or fast for scrolling. Slight jankiness at the beginning when starting to scroll. Not crazy but the scrolling speed is noticeably slower than my wife's 7T. Hopefully a software fix.
"However, other notables include improvement to the thermals based upon power consumption, some display touch latency and mis-touch tweaks, status bar UI fixes, and a resolution for a problem whereby some people were unable to install apps from the Play Store."
