Ability to use front and rear camera at same time - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I use a app called Torque with an addon called Track Recoder as a dash cam while driving. It's a great app and it ties into a bluetooth OBDII adapter so i get real time info on my videos. Right now I can select the rear camera or front camera but would like to use both. The option in the app to use the front and rear camera is there but from what I have read it's part of the OS only allowing me to use one camera at a time and I can't get around it.
Is there a custom rom or will rooting the phone allow me this option? I have rooted plenty of phones in the past and have no problem doing it to my S8 Plus if that is what needed.
Anyone have any insight? Would really like to be able to record my drive using both cameras.
Thanks!

Do you have access to the Samsung app store ?

If you do. Search for something called Dual camera. It's an add on by Samsung free to download. Download and enjoy man

I have installed that hoping it would work but no luck. It will work if using the Samsung app but anything outside of that it won't. I attached a couple screen shots from inside the app I am trying to use this with. From what the developer said it was specific to the Samsung S8 and the OS, which is why i was hoping maybe a root and custom rom might solve the problem for me.
I selected the forward facing camera for camera 2 and it just says it's offline.

Here is the note from the developer of the app.
I have a s8+ which does support dual camera but not through tracking recorder. there is a app from Samsung called dual camera so yes, dual camera works. just sucks track recording wont allow it. i need it because i need to record what passengers do in my vehicle.

Hi!
That uses samsings proprietary APIs (which basically use their own chip to do picture in picture on the main camera picture – so the app only sees one camera)
Unfortunately Samsung haven’t made this API public, so it’s not possible – if someone managed to reverse engineer it then that’s great, though it’s not public and not a ‘standard’
Sony did it properly (as did LG) and as a result, using the Android standard camera API it can correctly see 2 cameras, however samsungs can’t as they don’t become visible as 2 seperate cameras, but instead ‘merge’ the picture into the ‘first’ camera and I currently have no way to access that proprietary(read: a custom way the manufacturer decided to do it instead of the android way) to get it to work

Issue with Camera

Hello. I've just installed MM 6.0.1 by downloading the stock rom. As default, the Motorola Camera was the one in my phone, but I as usually do, I set de DPI to 270, so, the Motorla Camera doesn't work. The Google Camera doesn't show up at Google Play. I've installed the .apk but the first time I run it, it appears the tutorial and I have to swipe left to see the video feature. When I arrive at this point it shows me that "We can not establish connection with the camera" and it closes. I've tried to do the photo at the very beginning of the tutorial and it allows me to take photos and selfies, but it closes if I want to make a video. Any possible solution? THX!

This is a well-known issue which I had as well, although it was on a different device running marshmallow. No matter what I did, when I swiped to Video, it threw an error. There are several suggested fixes around for a similar problem, i.e. for devices which can't access the Google camera at all, not even for stills. It took me a while to find the solution that worked for my problem, and it was driving me nuts. The thing that worked for me was quite simple, tho - downgrade your Google camera app to a previous version. The latest version as of now is 3.2.045. The version that cleared up my problem was 2.7.008. A long time since, I've had not one issue with it The apk for 2.7.008 is easily found online. Obviously, tho, you will lose some very minor things when you downgrade, but very few.
By the way, why not consider another video app, even if that solution works for you? The Google camera one is good, but I've got a few I like a whole lot more, and each for different reasons and situations. My favorite is probably A Better Camera as a great all-rounder, or Camera360, which has a load of killer effects and tools. Camera Zoom FX and Camera FV-5 are really nice, too. Again, they are all easily found on apk sites. Load them up, have a play round, and keep what you want. It's a lot of fun, really
HTH :fingers-crossed:
Oh, and a side note... if anyone likes playing around with editing videos, Cyberlink's latest PowerDirector is muy nice, even on my Nexus 7. Full featured for a tablet app, and remarkably workable and fast.

Camera: Possible to read out both cameras separately?

I'm a software developer and I was wondering if it is possible (through the stock ROM app or 3rd party apps) to get one picture from each camera when taking a picture. Meaning, You end up with "left.jpg" and "right.jpg"! Even more exciting would be the ability to record videos from both cameras at the same time!
This would be interesting because it allows for many exciting 3D applications, such as 3D scanning of objects.
If it's not possible with the honor 8, do you know if it is possible with another dual-camera phone?
The camera is probably using a proprietary file to stitch the two images together. They are supposed going to be release source code to help in the development of custom roms, but I'm assuming that the camera will probably just use the proprietary blob to work. I don't know of any phones that let you get two images.
You could always get two cheap webcams to to achieve the same purpose.

I've never found any result about this, it could be possible. But, no one figured how

third party camera apps

I read somewhere (not sure where) that third party camera apps can not use the full potential of the dual-camera. Only the stock app can do that - not quite sure but I rememeber something that it can't access the 20MP black&white sensor or something.
Is this correct?
I would say that most third-party software was coded with one sensor in mind. I don't own a Mate 9, but I do know a bit about combining two images in one (binning) and photography. They are highly specialized actions, that require specially made software.
Dual lens appears to be the trend. Might go to the play store, send an email to the camera FV-5 folks. They've always been fast to respond
to my questions. I'm not really "interested" in dual lens cameras on phones. I use it for quick snapshots of things I work on (electronics).
for everything else, I defer to my dSLR.

"Automate" and the 360 Camera

I use the app "Automate" to do various chores on my phone, such as turning off my bluetooth radio when I leave home. I highly recommend it to anyone who has interest. Having bought the PH-1, I decided to play with some time-lapse videography. This is fairly easy to do in Automate, as it has the functionality to take pictures (and wait between) built-in. I can use either the primary camera or the selfie camera, and then stitch the pictures together in post to make the video.
My problem is the 360 camera. I so want to experiment with the 360 camera, but I am having some issues.
1) First, the camera seems to turn off when the Essential Camera App is not active. Does anyone know how to override this?
2) When I am configuring Automate. It does not sense the 360 camera. I am not sure how the app detects cameras, or if it does at all. After all, when was the last time you had a phone with something other than two cameras? It may be easiest as a programmer to just assume, and ignore the corner cases. But I am going to operate on the assumption it is possible to get this to work. In the app, if you set the "Camera" variable to 1, you get the primary camera, and if you set it to 2, you get the selfie. The obvious thing is to try 3 for the 360 camera, but this does not work. Neither does trying 0. Is there anyone who is both an owner of a PH-1 and a competent user of Automate that might have any ideas? Personally, I suspect if I can achieve step one above, this problem will come into greater focus. It will either be detected, or I will have enough information to go to the Automate community with requests. Right now though I suspect it is easier to find someone here with Automate experience than going there looking for someone with the PH-1.
Thanks for helping out!
Murtagh
I've never used automate, but I assume the "take picture" function you are using is independent.
Try setting automate to open up the essential cam, and then "take picture". The camera app has to be coded to read the external usb camera.

For accessability usb camera as default on phone

Hi all. Hope you can help. I am a blind person and am looking for a application or even if the stock camera of the Samsung S8 that I use can connect to a usb external camera. The applications that is available allow for picture taking and video recording, but what the problem is when I need to open for instance Be My Eyes it automatically start using my phone camera and not the usb camera. Why I need is to mount a camera on my glasses and then be able to use OCR applications that use the camera to read text or make a video call in whatsapp to a friend or family member or the Be My Eyes application that I can be assisted with the sighted person to see what is on the live stream of the camera and navigate me or tell me what products I am looking at. Application like cameraFi do not get picked up by android to make default camera application in default app managers and the phone auto go to rear camera of phone. I hope someone can point me in the correct direction or that there is a camera app out there that someone know about that can do this. For in the apk development on camera's it is available but I can not write my own program as yet to do this. Thank you and I hope I am posting in the correct area. Appoligies if not.
