Some time ago I read about a setting that showed the mobile connection type - 4G etc - against the signal strength symbol at the top of the screen. I tried this and have the name shown there now.
But I've decided I'd rather not have the name there and want to take it off. But I can't find the setting any more.
Where is the setting please?
OK I found it. This is a setting in Developer Options to keep mobile data on when connected to WiFi.

A work colleague is using a sim free touch cruise on the vodafone network but vodafone don't have any support for this device (mind you neither does HTC ). We got the vodafone settings for billpay vodafone off the internet and input them and can now surf, download gmail etc over HSDPA (H icon shows) and then it automatically reverts to 3G when not in use.
The problem is that the icon for 3G/umts in use is always on (ie the small 3G over the signal strength) and when the bigger 3G icon is touched it shows how long connected to 3G and as the device is still connected it keeps counting time even though the application using 3G is shut down.
My questions are as follows:
In this state (big 3G icon showing and small 3G icon above signal strenght) is this costing anything being constantly connected to 3G but not using it?
How can it be set to automatically disconnect?
My own touch cruise is on the 3 network but I don't have this difficulty.
My thinking is that it might have something to do with "vodafone live" but not sure what is happening or possibly have selected the wrong set of settings for vodafone ireland as there is a few different sets.

The always ON connection is general behaviour... it doesn't matter which network is the device on.
The big 3G/H icons only represent the available network (G(PRS)/E(DGE)/3G/H(SDPA))
The smaller is the signal strength...
The cost of the always ON connection depends on the dataplan being used... if it's an unlimited or a fairly large one like 5GB, it won't matter... but it realy depends on the data recieved....
In my case the avarage hourly traffic is around 1 MB, but i have a little e-mail traffic going so... whith a few mails and every 30 minute checking the traffic should be around 500 KB or lower...
As for the Auto-Disconnect, please search the forum... there are several threads about this in both subforums.

I know the Advanced Configuration Tool has an auto disconnect feature, but I had some issues with it and never went back to go play around with it.
You can also hold down the End button and a menu pops up and you can end data connection there. Or alternatively you can configure it so that holding down the End button always disconnects your data connection.
I have an unlimited data plan so not worried about data, I'm not sure however what the impact to battery usage is so I disconnect "just in case".
As for the 3G / H icon behaviors. Depending on which part of the country I'm in, I get different icons. Sometimes I get 3G and it switches to H when doing data. Othertimes it's always H whether disconnected or connected. (This is assuming that I'm in a 3G location) and not switching back to Edge.
Mine mostly shows the bigger 3G icon and the signal strenght icon with the little antenna icon (I'm on the 3 network which is 3g) but when I download data the small icon changes to 3G and then both change to H as required. Once finished it disconnects and reverts back to 3G. I have Schapps Advanced config tool installed.

I own this phone fo 2 weeks now. Based on my previous experience with smartphones and pda phones, there is one strange thing I do not understand.
Over the signal strength bars in the upper right corned of the screen, the symbol of an aerial is shown on my other devices if the gprs/edge is not active (e.g. mail reception/sending). On this device the "E" symbol is shown there continuously (in addition to the big "E" in the middle of the upper bar, which shows the edge availability according to the manual), and this means that the edge connection is active (see manual). However, it is not active, because on the Comms manager screen the data connection icon (No.6) is inactive. If I receive e-mails and use the edge function, this icon is active, ans it is possible to turn off the data connection. If I turn off the data connection after receiving my mails, the aerial appears in the corner for a short time (some minutes), but then changes back automatically to "E".
Does this mean that somehow there is an automatic data connection somehow? I can receive phone calls without any problems, and I use the official ROM.
Any ideas?

It simply means that you have EDGE access over GPRS access.
Ok I've got a few questions about the different network types and battery usage.
As far as I know there are 4 different possible scenarios:
3G mode active
3G mode active and connected to mobile data (3G/H showing in notification bar)
2G mode active
2G mode active and connected to mobile data (E or G showing in notification bar)
Currently I have settings default with "Use only 2G networks" unchecked, and "data enabled" unchecked. I have tasker made to automatically turn mobile data on whenever I open any app that may require it, and then turn it off after the app closes, or I can switch it on from the status bar power control.
This is because I assumed having it constantly activated would consume more power. Is this true? does it consume more power having data enabled even when no traffic is going through? If this wasn't the case, I might as well leave it enabled. However with my current system I could still be saving power because if I leave data on, traffic WOULD periodically be used for automatic sync and apps randomly using network and stuff.
The other thing I was wondering about is if there was any major difference in power consumption between 2G and 3G network modes with no mobile data connected. if 2G uses much less power, I could have it set on 2G by default then use tasker to switch to 3G and activate mobile data when opening any internet requiring app. Are there any other advantages of having 3G active over 2G other than mobile data transfer speeds?

Imho your settings are good. Mobile network is one of the battery killlers, so not using (or better using it when you really it), is very good. You are right, 3g has a higher speed on mobile network. Whereas the 2g-network has a much better network coverage. And the permament switch between 2g and 3g drains the battery very fast, too (happens e.g. when you travel).
To sum it up: Use 2g and mobile network off. If you need to use mobile network, turn 3g and mobile network on. Are you done, turn them off again and switch back to 2g.
When you say mobile network, do you mean when an active data connection is enabled?
Because just by the name 'Mobile network", you can be connected to a mobile network for calling and texting etc. without being connected to mobile internet/data.
Is there a difference in call quality between 3G and 2G networks?
Also when toggling between forced 2G only and 3G there seems to be an inactivity period where the reception icon at the top shows like 'disconnected' like it cuts all network communications, then shortly connects again to the specified network type. This delay might be annoying when trying to get internet fast on apps that need it... might not be worth the power saving, if it is only minimal power saving

I have been recently working outside my home country and I disable my mobile data as soon as I reach the airport.
My Nexus 5, now with 4.4.3 reports 0 bytes of data when I am in roaming and I never got a notification or any sort of activity that may point to a data access being made, yet my service provider sent a big bill with many 10KB accesses during the time I was in roaming.
The same problem might exist while at my home country, but since I have a few hundreds of MB to use each month, I can't really tell.
Anyone else is facing the same problem?
I will temporarily ask my service provider to block my data access while in roaming, but I would like to understand if that is some sort of Android bug or a service provider charging what it shouldn't.
I've looked a bit more into this issue and I suspect that it was the Google Location Services that try to obtain the positioning from the cellular mobile network.
I've installed the Network Monitor Mini and it showed me a few times that process has a residual network usage.
Since I'm on Wifi most of the time, I assumed that network usage was on the WiFi but now I understand that being connected to the WiFi doesn't mean that the phone cannot use cellular data.
Can anyone that uses little Mobile Data (disabled in the Settings most of the time) confirm that the eventually you get some cellular data charged if you have the Location Settings set to use the mobile networks?
Sorry for the monologue, but this might be useful for someone that may face this problem in the feature.
After being more attentive to the network usage pointed by Network Monitor Mini, I think I found the culprit.
I've spent the last weeks with mobile data completely off, using only WiFi, yet on a couple of occasions I noticed Network Monitor Mini reporting minimal network usage being made when no know network WiFi was around.
As the screenshot shows, the WiFi is not connected to any known access point, yet some data was being uploaded by one of those processes.
I think the phone is trying to ping the cellular antenna for a location, thus accounting for mobile data access.
I've disabled the location and I will keep monitoring the data usage to see if that is the real culprit. Also noticed that Network Monitor Mini has a traffic breakdown mode per interface. I'll use that to distinguish wifi and cellular data.
why not just disable data complete, a data signal wont even appear because it wont be connected to data? go to main settings, more, mobile networks, data enabled.. now uncheck it and your data connection will disappear, but your phone connection will stay.
edit.. and if you have root, you can install the disable service app, then you can disable the 5 differing types of location services that your phone uses.

The point I'm trying to show is that even with mobile data disabled, in roaming I still got several tiny chunks of data registered by my operator and I occasionally noticed Network Monitor Mini showing 0.1KB upload, as shown in the screenshot.

well, a little bit of data can be transferred through the phone signal(sms). do you have disabled in wifi settings, bottom right three dots, advanced, scanning always available? that uses the wifi to scan for location even when wifi is off, maybe they do that with the mobile signal as well. anyways, about a month ago, google location services kept waking my device non stop, so i completely disabled them in the google play services using the disable service app(i have root). now google never checks for my location unless i let it.

I disabled the Location services in Settings, restricted the background data and so far it has been three days with no data accesses registered by my provider.
I don't think the background data is responsible for the traffic so I will wait a couple more days and then re-enable it.
I think the Location services are useful and I do like those small things it offers like weather prediction for where you are, where you parked the car, time to go home/work and movie times near you. The only problem is that it doesn't seem to respect the Mobile data status.

It also happens with me but I have a Galaxy S4. It's a huge defect to alow location to consume mobile data even with the data roaming and mobile data disabled.
I begin by apologizing if it is not the correct place to post.
I have a problem, I have a smartphone orro and it appears the 2G / 3G incone next to the network signal. Even if I activate the mobile data, also appear the signal above the network signal, as usual: H + or 3G.
I wanted to remove those large icons that appear next to the network signal, thus leaving only the traditional icons to appear on the network icon.

If the option is not available in your device settings you'll need an external tool. Browse the app store for a status bar editor and if you want to dive deep you certainly do it with root.
