Virgin Mobile custom ROMs for SM-G900P? - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Are there any custom ROMs for the SM-G900P that totally work "out of the box"? By that, I mean that all aspects of the phone work (making and receiving calls and SMS; WiFi; cellular data; etc.) without having to flash additional APN files and such. I am trying to find a custom ROM for my Virgin Mobile Galaxy S 5, but I am tired of having to flash an APN file, and then finding that WiFi drops suddenly and won't reconnect, or SMS doesn't work, or some other important part of the phone is quirky.

[Q] Ninja-07061 on Inspire 4G MMS problem.

Hello.
I know similar threads can be found on related subjects, but I've easily gone over 25 threads and have made 0 progress.
I recently flashed {ROM} Ninja-07061 on my Inspire 4G and I'm absolutely in love with it. So far, it's my favorite ROM and I really want to keep using it.
The problem lies in the fact that I can't send or receive any MMS messages without first connecting to the mobile network, something I haven't had to do in all the non-cyanogen mods I've tried.
I've tried changing APN settings, using different messaging apps and pretty much all I know I can do without risking any damage to my phone.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, if there is anything I should post that could aid in solving the problem, please tell me, I am very very new to this entire android thing and I'm trying to learn as much as possible, but there are things that I still have no clue about.
Thanks in advance.
Possible Solution
I've had a similar problem with earlier versions of the ROM. I don't send enough MMS messages to know if this works, but at one point I had added an MMS-only APN. Something like what is mentioned in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1109983
Let me know if it works.
Thanks... unfortunately it didn't work :/
I've tried many different APN options and I still get the same results. MMS I received are stuck at "downloading" and ones I send are stuck at "sending".
The issue is with the way cm based Roms change the apn when disabling data. They disable the apn completely. While other stock based rom's don't disable the mms part of it. MMS use a little but of data and that's why you see the data arrows work when you send an MMS .
Okay, let me see if I understand.
CM based roms don't let me download or send MMS because they don't automatically connect to the mobile network to do it?
I noticed that I can send and receive while on the mobile network but not while disconnected (or while I'm connected to wifi).
Originally this worried me since I have a free MMS plan, which I believe should work separately from the mobile data connection, but I don't really know how it works (because I'm a total noob >.<).
I've read a little and it seems that MMS will be free, but they still require me to be connected to the mobile network. From what I can discern, this means that most stock roms (sense based) force a connection whilst sending or receiving an MMS and CM roms don't?
If that's so, is there a way to get the messaging app to force the connection, or will I have to connect to the mobile network every time I want to send/receive an MMS? I try not to have the connections enabled due to battery life and the fact that my data plan is capped.
Sorry for the wall of text, just trying to get used to the entire android scene :/

You got it. The only way I was able to do it is to activate data (which I normally keep off due to wifi everywhere and being on a prepaid plan) when I send an MMS. There are apps that control what can connect to data. I think apndroid is one of them.
The reason sense works is that it has its own built in MMS settings seperate from the apn settings.
Okay, guess I'll have to try some stuff out, at least I can rest easy knowing what's up now.
Thanks a billion.
No problem.

[Q] Help involving flashing to MetroPCS (Data only)

Hello XDA Devs.
I registered here to find out if it was possible to flash a phone to use ONLY 1x MetroPCS data (No incoming calls, messaging or mms)
I don't quite know how to put it. I have this very obscure phone. It's an LG Apex (I'm told it's just a copy of the LG Ally but on US Cellular) and it has been rooted. My mother has a plan on her cheapo MetroPCS phone that allows for unlimited calls, texts, and 1x data. She does not use the browser on her phone at all.
I've been doing some research beforehand and I know I have to use some tools like QPST and that the settings "might not stick" but I would really like to get data working on it as there are crucial times when I need to check my e-mail but there are no WiFi hotspots available.
This LG phone has been rooted but there's no Clockwork Recovery support so I can't flash any roms onto it. Is there any way to get it "flashed" for 1x data and nothing else? I want to ask before I try anything stupid because I don't want to be intercepting important calls.

ROMs for Global/GSM roaming

Hi everyone,
I have a d2vzw running Carbon ROM Kitkat. I spent the weekend back in the UK and enabled global mode, which connected to Vodafone's GSM/HSDPA network using the original Verizon SIM. So I had phone and SMS service - no problems at all.
However, I couldn't get a data connection. It was connected to the HSDPA network (enhanced 3G). Under Settings-->More...-->Mobile networks there is the option ("Access Point Names") to choose an APN. However, none showed up. I tried to add an APN manually, but as soon as I set Vodafone's MCC and MNC, it refused to save the APN info.
Oddly enough, the correct APN settings are all on the phone in Carbon ROMs "apns-conf.xml" file, they're just not showing up.
I tried everything to remedy this, but no luck.
So, here are two questions to harvest your collective wisdom:
First, is there a solution to this? I like Carbon ROM, but I have to have global data access for my work. If I can get my d2vzw running Carbon connected to international GSM networks and APN for internet, then I'd really like to.
Second, does anyone know of a KitKat ROM that DOES do this properly on the d2vzw?
Thank you so much,
M
I haven't checked in on AOSP ROMs in a while, but last time I did, none of them could do this, you need to run a Touchwiz-based ROM. AOSP ROMs like Carbon use a reverse-engineered radio interface which is not quite as good as the Samsung one which is included with TW ROMs, and this is one problem with it.
The bottom line is that if you want all the hardware features of your phone to work, you have to use a TW-based ROM, because Samsung hasn't opened up the hardware.

Thanks, Jacquestrapp. That's helpful. Perhaps I will flash a TW-based ROM and then keep it as a nandroid backup for when I go travelling.
I have been using my Verizon S3 in the Philippines as an international phone for months with excellent service. I am able to connect to the GSM network and transmit data at H+ speeds. I am on CM 10.1.3 official on Baseband MF1 and have been able to successfully switch to GSM using the PhoneInfo app. To assign proper APNs, I use the HiAPN app. Be very careful with Phone info: I once broke my connectivity messing with the settings too much ("Select radio band") and had to revert to Twiz and turn on the GSM bands using the "secret menu" to turn those back on. If you have a Twiz backup, try dialing *#2263# to choose the bands your phone has access to (seems impossible on other ROMs) if you keep having problems.
The thread here (see post 106) is enormously helpful.
The info about Twiz and reverse engineering is useful -- I haven't been able to get reliable service beyond CM 10.1.3 (very low signal, inability to send SMS, but somehow can receive SMS and voice calls), so I have been sticking to 10.1.3, unfortunately. I want to upgrade to 4.4, but haven't been able to do it without breaking GSM functionality. Has anyone gotten GSM and data to work on a 4.4 ROM?

Lineage OS 7.1.1: Unable to send SMS messages

Hello all,
I flashed my girlfriend's Sprint S5 with Lineage OS recently without a hitch, all services working perfectly. We ended up traveling, so she went to Sprint to set up a temporary international roaming plan. Everything was completely as expected abroad. When we got back, her phone would not send SMS messages.
We tried the usual airplane mode and such, and to no avail. Assuming something was wrong with the network configuration from travelling, we reset network settings. Didn't work. I then decided to just do a full wipe and re-flash of Lineage OS. Still doesn't work. I then resorted to going back to the stock TouchWiz ROM from Sprint. At that point, under the stock ROM, SMS were sending. Out of curiosity, we flashed back Lineage OS, and SMS will again not send. We noticed that if the SIM card is removed, SMS will send, but the phone would not be able to access 4G LTE. We also confirmed with Sprint that there are no restrictions on the account.
What could be causing this to occur only on custom Roms? Do we need to do a PRL update? If so, how does that work on stock Android?
Thanks in advance!
S5 sprint No outbound sms
I've had this problem for weeks....So far the only solution is using Google voice app....
I'm using LOS 7.1.1 20170207 kltespr nightly, LTE SMS can only receive, sending doesn't work. Only 3G SMS works.
Things I noticed:
Settings -> About Phone -> Status -> IMEI Information. When on 3G, all information is displayed here, when on LTE, only IMEI and IMEI SV is displayed, there's no PRL/MIN/MEID/ICCID anywhere, not even disabled or greyed out, just hidden completely.
ICCID also shows DUMMY_NV_ICC_SERIAL instead of the actual ICCID.
Same experience for me, I've been trying to find a workaround for over a month with no success. Alternative text messaging apps seem to work, but I don't trust 3rd parties with my SMS.
Unable to send SMS
Mike.
Which third party SMS app are you getting to work? Besides Google voice I have had no luck with any third party app?
I'm having the same issue. I'm on Resurrection ROM which is based on Lineage. Since update I can't send SMS at all other than via Google Voice. I can receive SMS and I can send/receive MMS.
I did find that if I change to 3g only for my network settings, I can send SMS. But then of course I don't get LTE data speeds for everything else. So the issue for me at least is tied specifically to LTE. Wondering if there is an APN or other setting I can change that would fix this but so far no luck finding anything.
Bug reported since 01/28

I've run into the same problem or similar. If I set my preferred network type to GLOBAL then I can send and receive SMS/MMS messages but I'm forced to either Roaming LTE or 3G. It's often stuck in 3G after a drive for any distance. If I force it to LTE, then SMS/MMS stops working and I can't place or receive calls either but the network will show up as LTE and Sprint.
To get there from Settings Home -> More (under Wireless and Networks) -> Cellular networks -> Preferred network type -> Choose Global.
Sometimes I can force it back to LTE but roaming if I switch temporarily to LTE then once it connects switch back to Global. Occasionally I have to put it in airplane mode to get the radios to reset and connect but some combo of switching network type and ending up in global and switching into and back from airplane will do the trick.
YMMV of course.
one way I fix it temporarily is to:
cell networks - carrier settings, let it crash
go in again and let it find your carrier
once connected, make a phone call at least to get it ringing
I can then make sms mms.
it's a rediculous work around but it works for me every time
SMS Sending Problem with Lineage 14.1 (31.07.2017)
Heyy
I'm not able to send sms from SIM 1 but can send sms from SIM 2 in Lenovo A6020a46 (2GB) on Lineage 14.1 (31.07.2017).
The same SIM is working good in another roms and Calling + Internet are working properly.
After dialing *#*#4636#*#* in Phone Information - SMSC Refresh then it appeared "Phone no.", 456 and I pressed Update.
But there was no process for saving or updating. Then I reentered in Phone Information but SMSC Shows blank.
What to do??? anybody help in this matter will be immensely appreciated.

I made this file using Odin with the steps from here. I flashed the file, set the connection to LTE aand it worked. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=71582847&postcount=5908
To fix this issue with having LTE signal and sending SMS at the same time you have to open EnginneringMode app (or *#*#3646663#*#*) and check 'Sms over Sgs support' in Misc Feature Config tab.
Doesn't work because nothing comes up entering the code. Any idea?

If that code doesn't work for you, try to find an app called Engineering Mode MTK. Unfortunately I cannot attach any screenshots yet (I got less than 10 posts).
fix
there is an option in network settings (enhanced 4G LTE mode for comunications etc) i disabled that option and messaging works fine now. before unchecking this option i could only send sms only with phone on 3g mode, now it works fine. i think this option is for hd voice calls via 4g lte.
I see this is an old problem and I´m having the same problem. I can receive SMS, but I can´t send.
But to add to that, I couldn´t connect at all with my previous carrier and changed carrier after which I can use data, call and send SMS. I still can´t receive SMS.

LG G5 Nougat 7.0 - roaming mobile data issue

Hello,
I'm having trouble using my phone in roaming. My home mobile provider is Vip net., in Croatia. I'm currently in England, and my phone is currently connected to Vodafone network, which a partner of Vip.
I'm unable to get mobile data connection unless I'm connected to Vodafone 4G network. When I do a manual scan of networks, I can see (most of the time) three instances of each network (4G/WCDMA/GSM). Whenever my phone decides to switch from 4G to WCDMA or GSM, I lose the mobile connection.
APN is of course set correctly since otherwise I wouldn't be able to connect to the network on 4G (I've even had my provider send me the APN configuration message to make sure that's correct - I also tried various modifications to settings of the same).
I've talked with my providers technical support and they haven't been able to provide me with a solution, so I'm wondering if anyone here might have a clue about what is happening?
I've tried doing some basic diagnostic with adb, but haven't been able to gather much from modem logs, which I've attached here, and I would be grateful if anyone would take a look.
Here is the log, please note that it starts with me turning on mobile data and ends with me turning it off:
https://pastebin.com/reiwX8Ck
The phone in question is LG G5, Android 7.0 Nougat, Stock rom. (I had the same issue on 6.0)
Thanks guys!
