Edge screen lighting for 3rd party messaging apps ? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Hey everyone,
I'm trying to figure out how to get this working. I've tried Text and ChompSMS. I get the edge lighting if I have the screen locked, but still turned on. If the screen is off, or in always on display, I do not get it though.
It does work with the default texting app.
I've made sure that they are turned on in the notification access settings as well.
Any ideas?

Lock Screen Notifications - Not Displaying When Phone Is Off

I am experience an issue (what I believe to be an issue) with the lock screen notifications not showing up when my screen is off. When I receive text messages or emails when my phone is off (AOD is disabled and lock screen notifications are enabled) the screen does not turn on and display any notifications (I could have sworn it did on my S6). Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there a way to have it display my notifications when I receive them if my screen is off?

Unless it's built in to an app, the screen does not turn on for notifications. If there's a setting for that I could not find it.
I'd like that too, it works nicely on the iphone.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge with Verizon that I just bought and have the same issue - it won't show notifications on the lock screen (with AOD off). For examle, any Gmail notifications. The screen just stays blank and does not turn on to show the notifications, unlike every other smartphone today (my Nexus 5X did that). Am I missing something? I can't believe that this awesome phone would be missing such a fundamental feature (i.e. turn on the screen temporarily to show notifications). Other people also have this issue?

Notifications displayed on default lock screen

Hi,
I would like to make my phone's screen light up periodically when it's locked and I receive notifications.
My phone does not have a pulse notification LED and it does not have any other means of showing persistent alerts for notifications when the screen is locked.
I have sen many apps that replace the default lock screen and generally require a lot of permissions, change the lock screen design, wallpaper, unlocking method and mess up / complicate things unnecessarily in general.
What I had in mind is a very simple concept but I don't know if it exists or if it is possible, because it may consume too much battery or maybe Android just does not allow it.
I would like my regular lock screen (which already shows that I have notifications, by the way) to light up for ~1 second every ~1 minute until the notifications are dismissed when I have notifications. Ideally that would be customizable somewhere.
To save battery, if the front camera detects no light (i.e: the phone is in the pocket or turned down) then it would not light up the screen, assuming the camera does not consume more battery than this would.
Could someone help me find the closest thing to something like that?
Thanks.

Thanks.
That app is close to what I want, but if I understand it correctly, it turns on the screen when I receive a notification for a period of time, and then it turns off for good.
Ideally, it would do the same function as the notification LED: turn on and off repeatedly until the notifications are dismissed.
I'll give it a try though, and see what it does.

How to disable screen turning on for ALL text messages received (ALL SMS apps)

Hey guys,
I just got a ZMAX 2 and am loving it so far for the most part. Except, there's one little thing that's really bothering me. I often have my phone in my pocket and I don't use a pin/password on my phone. Thus, when the screen turns on in my pocket when I get a text, it often starts tapping all over the screen. In addition in is a waste of battery imo!
What I've tried:
Looking all through the settings. Couldn't find anything. I've tried putting it in Do Not Disturb mode, mute mode, nothing stops the screen from turning on when a text is received.
I installed other messaging apps: I've used Hangouts, Messenger, and Textra and explicitly said 'do not wake screen'. It still wakes.
I tried disabling ALL notifications by the SMS app that I have set as default. Guess what: the screen still comes on (and then shows a blank lockscreen).
I'm starting to think this is a setting baked right in, independent of the default SMS app at the time. Will we need root to fix this problem?
Any suggestions/thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Need help with Edge Lighting notifications - They're never consistent!

Hi All
I can't seem to get Edge Lighting notification to work consistently.
Everything seemed fine the first few days when i had Always On Display enabled, however with it off, it seems to have a mind of its own.
I have Edge Lighting set to "Always", every single notification enabled, transparency is 0, width is the highest and color is set to "App Color"
With those settings, the popups would appear only sometimes.
I then figured out that the individual apps themselves need to have "pop-up" notifications enabled.
Now with that enabled in a handful of apps, i get notifications for those - however, there are a lot more apps that don't support it! Google Hangouts for example!
And on top of that, Whatspp seems to be the only application that actually keeps an icon on my screen until i grab the phone. all the other icons disappear once the lighting stops.
Any thoughts as to what i'm missing?
or is this just how edge lighting works?
I've not been able to get even one app to work when the screen is off.
To me the EL notifications work for all apps but only not for Viber.. they light up, but dissapear... and what's worse, when I unlock the phone later, there is NO notification that there is new message....

Ahh! yes this happens to me all the time too.
What a strange system.
Cant comprehend how it works perfectly fine for some apps, and not at all for others.
Glad to know its not just me!
If you are on Oreo, you can use Notification Channels to "force" the app's specific notifications to "Urgent" which will "Make sound and pop-up on screen." Unfortunately, in order for it to work with screen-off, the app has to have built in the ability to "wake screen," which is why apps like samsung messages, textra, whatsapp, snapchat all have the ability to work with the screen off. you can use a 3rd party app like Glimpse Notifications to force app notifications to wake the screen, but when you receive a EL Pill notification, it will be with Glimpse's icon, and no message details.
Also apps like facebook messenger, which have custom notification API's (because of chat heads and special things that facebook enables in this app) will NOT play nicely with EL Notifications. I have tried everything to get it to play nice with this app, but it also does NOT target Oreo for notification channels, so I cannot force it. I can force it with "Autonotification" app from Tasker, but it's not enough to trigger it.
Hope this information helps a little bit for ya. What really needs to happen, is Samsung needs to program EL Notifications in the system level, rather than as an app that runs (Edge Screen apk) so that it can monitor notifications on a system-level rather than Piggy-backing off of Android's notification system. That way, no matter what the notification is within the app, it will display in Pill-form when the screen is off and on. In order to get to more information, or reply in-line, then you bring down the notification shade and voila.
But, I've reported this to Samsung numerous times, and have never received a reply from them. Here's to hoping that maybe it gets a revamp/improvement when the S9 comes out.

Question about edge lighting

On standard notification (edge lighting off) when my phone is asleep and I get a new message the notification light will blink until I open the phone and check the notifications. When I enable edge lighting for notifications, the edge will only light up once and that is it. So I only know about the notification if I am looking at my phone when it happens. Is there any way to get the edge lighting to repeat like the standard notification does?

From what I have experienced with the standard and good lock edge lighting, no they're isn't. It would be an awesome feature if they did enable "reminder" lighting. Addy least in good lock.

My phone does not blink notifications with edge lighting on or off. It was my understanding the blink function is gone, but I sure hope I'm wrong.
