How to disable screen turning on for ALL text messages received (ALL SMS apps) - Miscellaneous Android Development

Hey guys,
I just got a ZMAX 2 and am loving it so far for the most part. Except, there's one little thing that's really bothering me. I often have my phone in my pocket and I don't use a pin/password on my phone. Thus, when the screen turns on in my pocket when I get a text, it often starts tapping all over the screen. In addition in is a waste of battery imo!
What I've tried:
Looking all through the settings. Couldn't find anything. I've tried putting it in Do Not Disturb mode, mute mode, nothing stops the screen from turning on when a text is received.
I installed other messaging apps: I've used Hangouts, Messenger, and Textra and explicitly said 'do not wake screen'. It still wakes.
I tried disabling ALL notifications by the SMS app that I have set as default. Guess what: the screen still comes on (and then shows a blank lockscreen).
I'm starting to think this is a setting baked right in, independent of the default SMS app at the time. Will we need root to fix this problem?
Any suggestions/thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Abandoning GoSMS?

I've had this Samsung S3 for six months now rooted with stock AT&T JB ROM. I'm starting to use the phone in the car more and am perplexed how difficult I'm finding it to do some pretty simple, commonly useful things. Here's what I'm trying to achieve:
- When phone connects to bluetooth in car, to on Car Mode and Driving Mode
I already use Llama and turning on Car Mode is easy. Driving Mode looks like I have to use a custom Android Intention (haven't tried it yet)
1. Replace lock screen (currently using Widget Locker) with Car Dashboard for easy app launch and forwarding of songs being played in Power Amp, Spotify or Pandora. Strange that Llama toggles Car Mode but the toggle on the OS is "Driving mode" Seems Driving Mode controls TTS activation and Car Mode toggles the Car Mode app. I think this is just the problem with Touchwiz not being "Android Standard" functionality?
2. Make it so I don't have to press a button to wake phone but don't eat battery with screen usage. The only Car app I've found that comes close to this is the iBOLT Dock'n Drive app where you set the screen brightness slider all the way down and it just shows a clock jumping around the screen. I don't even want the stupid clock - but I guess it's nice to know the phone is in car mode waiting for me to touch the screen. Unfortunately music controls are not on this dash app and the Car app with Pandora integration (forget the name) doesn't have the blank the screen mode without sleeping.
3. When a text comes in, I want either (a) and auto-response that I'm driving and to call me if its urgent, or BETTER, (b) allow me to speak "reply" and do a voice to text response or "auto response" to send my auto response. S-voice allows you to say 'reply' but only if the text comes in when the S-voice app is the currently opened app. If phone is sleeping and text comes in, all it does is read the text. Disabling widget locker and having no lockscreen slider made no difference.
Sidenote: I've also discovered on the S3, because I don't use S-Voice, (I have home double tap mapped to Google Voice Search), the TTS doesn't work. If I manually launch S Voice once, then TTS works but if I remove it from the background apps list then no TTS. That's sort of a side issue.
4. If car mode is enabled, on GoSMS I don't need a pop-up. Just TTS. But GoSMS still thinks I haven't seen the message. So even though I heard the message GoSMS keeps pinging me with a reminder (which I do want repeat reminders for unread texts when NOT in car/driving mode) Strangely there is no Car/Driving mode settings in GoSMS. Surprising. And the Auto Response has to therefore be manually toggled.
It appears I may have to add some 3rd party apps to achieve what I want and possibly dump GoSMS - I've also found that CloudSMS (to replicate SMS to my tablet) doesn't work with GoSMS running. Boo. Hiss. I GoSMS is such a superior SMS program in most all other respects. Hate to see it go.
Seems what I'm asking to do shouldn't be so complicated. With all Google's resources, I'm surprised this isn't all built-in to Android and easily used.
Getting close. Turned off option on GoSMS to disable other messaging notifications (fixed CloudSMS issue).
Found two promising apps:
SMS+Car - Does the job but the it doesn't use the native Google voice recognition and more importantly doesn't read calendar reminders. What it DOES do is mark the SMS messages it reads as read!
Enhanced SMS + Caller ID+ - This is the better app, it cleaner, more options, used native Google voice recognition. It's missing one thing though, DOESN'T MARK THE SMS AS READ! Dealbreaker.
Search continues...

Won't get a notification and/or vibration when I get a message

It has been like this for awhile, but it hasn't really been bothering me I guess until now I realized the importance of it, which I should of done this long ago cause it's been like this for a couple of months. Notifications are on, so I'm not sure what the problem is.
So, with notiication, do you mean just the sound and vibration? Or also the message in the upper tray?
It's not much information. So here are some possibilities:
- you have installed a skin and have not selected any sounds.
- in the accessability men you have set: play no sounds/feedback at all (it's for deaf people)
- You have some kind of do not disturb mode on, without the notification in the tray saying so.
- You have backgrond syncing of, and now apps only sync when you use them. So you get no notification.
- sound settings and vibration settings are off (not likely of course)
- the phone is instructed to play notifications to another device (watch or some other bluetooth device)
- your phone is not working properly. Try to restore to factory default and see if it is something in the software, or hardware. If not working after reset, ==> waranty
EDIT: in the title you say: when I get a message. you mean text message? NOtification sounds can be changed. Sms messages can have their own sounds en settings. It's in the sound menu.

Alright this may help or not, but let's say you message me thru the default standard messaging thru the phone. Usually, the recipient would get a notification of that message, shortly after being sent depending on the area's signal. I, however do not get a notification, vibration, ring, I do not get anything that notifies me in any way that I got that message, so I could being doing whatever on my phone, receive an important message about work or something, and never know about it. However I do have Smart Launcher and the messaging icon does have notification numbers to the top left of it, but that doesn't help really.

Where did you check if notifications were enabled. In settings AND in the app itself? you can also try to clear cache and storage of the app.
Ok I'm dumb notifications were on when I went thru messaging, but when I went thru the application manager they weren't on. Honestly don't remember how that'd happened, but thanks for the help bro.

Messenger (SMS) notifications disappearing after 1 second

When I receive a text message (using Google's Messenger), the screen lights up and I see the notification on the lock screen. After 1 or 2 seconds, without any input, the notification disappears before I can do anything. This has caused me to miss several (somewhat) important text messages because when I go back, the notification is no longer there to remind me to check my messages.
Any suggestions of how to fix this?
Same issue on LG V20 running Android 7.0. Started with Hangouts messages only and then spread to SMS/text messages yesterday. heads up notification displays for fraction of a second before disappearing. Same behavior with notification icon in notification bar. Shows for split second before apparently being instantaneously dismissed. Expanding notification shade shows no notification. I thought it was my messaging app Textra, but full uninstall re-install did not fix. Tried reverting to stock Android messaging app, still no fix. Reverted from Nova to stock Launcher, no fix. This is maddening! Sounds like it might be an OS bug, but your the first person to post something exactly like I'm experiencing. Hopefully more find this and report. No fix as of yet that I've found.
I had a chat with Samsung support where basically they had me first boot into safe mode to ensure no 3rd-party apps were messing it up (they weren't). Then (in regular boot mode), I had to enable all disabled apps (AT&T bloatware). Then, I enabled notifications for all apps.
This fixed my issue well enough. The notifications appear, then go away after a second, but then immediately come back. It's still quirky, but now the notifications are persistent.

Need help with Edge Lighting notifications - They're never consistent!

Hi All
I can't seem to get Edge Lighting notification to work consistently.
Everything seemed fine the first few days when i had Always On Display enabled, however with it off, it seems to have a mind of its own.
I have Edge Lighting set to "Always", every single notification enabled, transparency is 0, width is the highest and color is set to "App Color"
With those settings, the popups would appear only sometimes.
I then figured out that the individual apps themselves need to have "pop-up" notifications enabled.
Now with that enabled in a handful of apps, i get notifications for those - however, there are a lot more apps that don't support it! Google Hangouts for example!
And on top of that, Whatspp seems to be the only application that actually keeps an icon on my screen until i grab the phone. all the other icons disappear once the lighting stops.
Any thoughts as to what i'm missing?
or is this just how edge lighting works?
I've not been able to get even one app to work when the screen is off.
To me the EL notifications work for all apps but only not for Viber.. they light up, but dissapear... and what's worse, when I unlock the phone later, there is NO notification that there is new message....

Ahh! yes this happens to me all the time too.
What a strange system.
Cant comprehend how it works perfectly fine for some apps, and not at all for others.
Glad to know its not just me!
If you are on Oreo, you can use Notification Channels to "force" the app's specific notifications to "Urgent" which will "Make sound and pop-up on screen." Unfortunately, in order for it to work with screen-off, the app has to have built in the ability to "wake screen," which is why apps like samsung messages, textra, whatsapp, snapchat all have the ability to work with the screen off. you can use a 3rd party app like Glimpse Notifications to force app notifications to wake the screen, but when you receive a EL Pill notification, it will be with Glimpse's icon, and no message details.
Also apps like facebook messenger, which have custom notification API's (because of chat heads and special things that facebook enables in this app) will NOT play nicely with EL Notifications. I have tried everything to get it to play nice with this app, but it also does NOT target Oreo for notification channels, so I cannot force it. I can force it with "Autonotification" app from Tasker, but it's not enough to trigger it.
Hope this information helps a little bit for ya. What really needs to happen, is Samsung needs to program EL Notifications in the system level, rather than as an app that runs (Edge Screen apk) so that it can monitor notifications on a system-level rather than Piggy-backing off of Android's notification system. That way, no matter what the notification is within the app, it will display in Pill-form when the screen is off and on. In order to get to more information, or reply in-line, then you bring down the notification shade and voila.
But, I've reported this to Samsung numerous times, and have never received a reply from them. Here's to hoping that maybe it gets a revamp/improvement when the S9 comes out.

OOS 12 upgrade- all app notifications turned off by default?

So I upgraded to OOS12, i did a factory wipe as well to start fresh. Noticed odd stuff, like I wasn't getting text message notifications, they were coming in but notifications were set only to show up in the status bar not notify me. Then weird stuff like my alarm didn't wake me up this morning- the clock app was set not to notify me at all!
I found the manage notifications, almost all apps were set to off. A few odd ones were on, Facebook was on, "My Files" was on...is there some reason why this is? I know there's a big push now to not have so many notifications on our phones...but it's very frustrating as I actually use my phone for work and productivity, and most of my notifications are important. I'd rather have them all on and turn off the ones that are annoying, but I don't see a setting?
