Can't change theme on stock, unrooted FRD-L04 - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

I have been using the EMUI Theme Editor app to modify custom themes for my Honor 8. It has always worked fine with no problems and I have been able to jump back and forth between stock and modified EMUI 5 themes, wallpapers, and fonts, until now. When I try to apply any theme (even stock EMUI) using the stock EMUI 5 Themes app, it just hangs on "applying" and I have to force close it. It WILL work if I try to apply a wallpaper, but only that. Trying to apply anything else gets stuck. Nothing on phone has changed. Already tried clearing app cache, and everything else the stock OS allows to be cleared.

Try and wipe cache in recovery and see if that helps.

So wiping cache in RECOVERY didn't work? Do u store ur themes on an SD card? What u can try is clear cache of the app, then delete the folders Hwthemes on ur internal and external storage and reboot ur phone. After that u won't have a custom theme installed and then try to apply a stock theme if it isn't applied already.
Did this happen after the B388 update?

All my custom and downloaded themes were on internal storage in the HWThemes folder, but just to be sure, I removed the external SD card. Did everything you said, even booted to recovery and cleared cache again, rebooted, and my custom theme from before was still applied and the problem still remains. I am on the B385 update version and this is the latest version for the L04 as far as I know because I'm not seeing anything new if I run the System Update app.
EDIT: I googled B388 and yes there is an update, but it's not being offered to my phone for some reason.

Yeah I didn't receive the OTA yet. Why don't u try to clear the themes app's app data using ADB. The screenshot I've attached below has the required command to do so.
Here's the name of the themes app:

Hooked up the phone, ran the command, it returned the message "success" but the problem remains. Still hangs on applying theme. When I opened the themes app the first time after running the command, it asked for permissions, so looks like it did run.

Font: Roboto condensed
Theme: https://huaweiemuithemes.blogspot.in/2017/06/sony-xperia-xz-premium-theme-claimed.html
Theme is then modified in the themes editor app I mentioned in op. I am using custom navbar icons and battery icon, both of which are built in to the themes editor app and can be selected to modify and save custom version of any theme.
Also running Nova launcher with Pixel Icon Pack.
Wallpaper is from an app called Colors & Gradients.
Yeah, looks like I'm headed for a reset. Was hoping maybe there would be an OS update that would maybe update the system apps, but could be a long wait for that.

Still haven't done a full reset yet, but the B388 update is installing right now. Hoping this might fix the theme app.
EDIT: Nope, didn't fix it!

Already tried this using ADB commands. See previous post. Actually I don't think the app is the problem. I think that some part of the customized theme I am using that I made using the 3rd party theme customization app I mentioned in the op must have broken some part of the system framework.

Possible. For work around may be a full factory reset or dload method

Well the themes app itself won't let you delete it because it's the current theme. It only allows you to delete other downloaded themes in the app. I have also tried deleting everything in the HWThemes folder on the internal sd, which I can do, but the current custom theme is written into the system so no way to completely clear it without root access.

PROBLEM SOLVED
Finally did a full factory reset and it cleared the problem. After setting up the phone, I was able to change themes with no problem. Then just for laughs, I tried applying the "problem" custom theme just to see what would happen. Sure enough, it broke the themes app again! So I had to do another full reset, but now I know I was right, that the custom theme I made (actually I think it was the phone dialer skin I imported form one of those ios-like themes) was "breaking" the system framework and hanging the stock emui themes app. So now we know.
FWIW, I used the stock backup app to backup and restore all my apps with their settings, phone logs, messages, and some system settings and it worked great. Just like titanium backup on a rooted phone... well almost as good. Well done Huawei!

You don't install this like a regular app. Use root manager and push to system>apps. Make sure to adjust permissions.

yea when I changed a main rom app from system/app I went into titanium backup.1)backup system app just in case. there usually in red. 2)I wrote the name exactly like it says on system file- onto the app i am going to replace that I stored on sd card from computer.3)On Titanium I uninstalled app. 4) Paste sd app in system/app folder. Installed. Opened backup in Titanium again so I don't loose it.( Just so you know I did this with a google search widget in system app. I wanted a transparent search. Hope this helps someone

Here's a new black app that's worth trying out, no grey and looks killer:
Black Google Mobile by bGoog

Look for an app called custom ICS search, it allows you to create a widget go any color you want.

[Solved] Homescreen Wallpaper Reset

After updating my Galaxy S6 (SM-G920F) to 5.1.1, the homescreen wallpaper always resets to the stock Samsung WP every after reboot. I use themes downloaded from the Theme Store. Everything else remains applied (lockscreen WP, icons, etc.) Anyone have an idea to fix it? Thanks.
it may seem weird, but just simply uninstall facebook or disable it, reboot then update it again.

Thanks for the hint, but i tried it and failed. It still went back to stock.
Solved!
I've solved the problem, although I don't know which step did solve it.
Things I did:
Uninstalled/disabled some apps and deleted some files to free up space (my memory was nearly full)
Switched to the default theme and uninstalled all other downloaded themes
Wiped cache in settings>storage
Rebooted, downloaded a new theme and applied it
Wiped cache again and reboot
Wallpaper from theme is still there Yey!
Special thanks to @Justinhopaolo for helping me out

Theme engine issues after reverting back to stock COS 13.1

Hello guys,
I've got a problem and after searching Google, XDA and the OnePlus forums, I decided to ask for help. Please help!
I reverted my OPO back to stock COS 13.1 from SultanXDA's build, last night (and lost my whole internal storage in the process - apparently the COS recovery Factory Reset is a FULL wipe, internal storage included, not just a data wipe. Thank you Cyanogen *presents middle finger* ) and everything works alright except for one thing: the theme manager.
I am on the latest COS update (screenshot attached) and the problem with the Theme manager is that, no matter what theme I have installed, it still shows up like the second screenshot attached.
When I try to apply it, it applies well, but it has no wallpaper. So, applying themes works fine, except for the wallpaper.
I already tried to clear cache, app data, restart, set storage permissions to allow for the app, even tried a factory reset, nothing helped. Did anyone else encounter this? If so, how did you fix it? If not, do you guys have any idea what to do? Please help, I'm already pissed off that I lost everything on internal storage and didn't make a backup because nothing should touch storage unless specifically requested and except for a bootloader lock/unlock, so I'm a few inches away from throwing this phone out the window, literally!
Help!
You talking about how it doesn't show the status bar correctly? I have this going on also...
As for the wallpaper, notice how it says customized, tap on your theme again and then tap reset.

It doesn't show the status bar, icons, wallpaper, anything.
I tried resetting it too and it shows up with no wallpaper, same icons as system etc.
A no go...
Any suggestions?
OK, so after searching franticly for the past few hours, I've found out what to do to fix this:
1. Go to Settings > Apps
2. Click on the menu dots in the right hand upper corner > Show System
3. Find Themes Provider > Clear App Data and Cache
4. Force close, along with Theme Manager and Chooser
5. Restart.
Hope this helps everyone else who might be having trouble with this

Whatsapp keeps disappearing (NXT-AL10, Nougat B575, Unlocked BL, Root)

Hey guys,
I would like to know if anyone here has experience such an issue before. Recently updated my ROM from KangVIP Slim B357 to Nougat B575 Stock. Bootloader is unlocked, Root Access is given and everything seems to be working smoothly.
BUT
Whatsapp keeps disappearing on me! Ive tried installing it from the Play Store and manually via ApkMirror, but no dice. Once I reboot my phone, the icon is gone, both in the app drawer and the home screen.
The issue keeps happening, no matter how many times I keep reinstalling it. Whats interesting though: When I check /Data/App, there is a separate Whatsapp folder being generated with each new install. I have already deleted all folder after manually uninstalling Whatsapp, but a fresh install after reboot still doesnt stick after the following reboot....
So, anyone seen this before? Tried googling, but no luck there either.
Thanks in advance!

Notifications Issues on Nougat Android 7.0
WhatsApp Users
For all of you who have been lamenting the poor notification situation on Nougat, cried over the fact that you only see the most recent message making the whole "notification" thing completely useless, things are looking out.
In version 2.17.24 (grab it from http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/whatsapp-inc/whatsapp/whatsapp-2-17-24-release/ ), WhatsApp has properly implemented notifications on Android 7.0 and 7.1 Nougat devices.
Did I help you? A ''thanks :good:'' would be highly appreciated

trying move whatsapp to system > app or priv-app maybe fixing this problem,,,, but really this is strange issue.
i debrand my L29 to AL10 and to DL00 many times and don't have this problem it's normal if whatsapp not working ! but disappearing really wired
edit
maybe it's hidden are you using any other launcher?
im using nova launcher. ill check again if there are any hidden app options, but i doubt it. better to be safe than sorry though...
on my previous install (kangvip b357, al10, nova launcher) i had whatsapp installed as a system app for notifications to come through. did a backup with titanium backup, but it wouldnt restore system apps on nougat. so i just installed from the play store and then restored the data & settings through TiBu.
unfortunately, that didnt work for whatsapp, so i installed it from playstore and just copied the whatsapp folder from my previous install to restore messages and still have the media.
i have also tried converting it to a system app, both through TiBu and manually, but ive only tried system/app, not priv-app. on the previous install it was in system/app though and worked like a charm.
luckily, i only reboot my phone like once a week, so for the time being, whatsapp works as intended. just that i have to backup, reinstall and restore after every reboot...annoying!

Broken themes after twrp "format data"

Hi. When rooting Huawei Mate 8 I had to use "format data" option to remove encryption (it wouldn't take my PIN). Then I flashed magisk and when I rebooted back to system, I found out that there's only 1 basic theme available, HWthemes folder empty, downloaded themes not working (despite "theme applied" notification, not even after reboot). My goldmagazine theme is gone, and the setting "Homescreen style" shows a placeholder drawing where normally my theme picture would show. Does anybody have experience with this sort of special effect? What am I supposed to do to bring my themes back?

Everything that you had installed, saved and setup got wiped when you reset data. You'll have to reinstall/replace anything that got wiped and manually set it all back up again.

Hello and thanks for your reply. The phone was shipped with those themes from factory, I never installed them, so I didn't think they would be stored together with my personal data. Any idea why new themes downloaded from Huawei don't work either?
I have access to another phone like this which is not rooted. Can I somehow extract these files from there? (The folder shows as empty, even though it 50MB+)

Try reinstalling the stock firmware and then go through the rooting process again but this time don't encrypt the device and don't enable a PIN, you probably wont have the same issue.

There may or may not be another way, but the way I described is the simplest and least likely to have additional issues to fix. Trying to "add it back" may not be so simple and might cause other bugs along the way before you get it all straightened back out.
Do yourself a favor and take the simplest route.
