I noticed in the USA version (@3:50- Rogers HTC One X Review on Youtube) that there is a partition on the HTC One X of ~2GB for Apps.
Does anyone think that 1) this partition can be removed, and 2) that more space can be made available rather than the messily >10gb on this phone?
These questions are basically my make or break for HTC and my upgrade. I may end up waiting of the SIII if I can't at least have 12GB of storage space made available.
What 12gb, this phone has 32gb of internal memory and 26gb was user accessible. Do you.think that you posted this in one s section or what? This is one x And dev thread, post this kind of questions in Q&A thread from the next time.

Keep in mind you have the international HSPA version.. I am talking about the ATT LTE One X releasing on May 6th.

it's make or break over 2gb?? getting a little picky are we not? i see a lot of peoples points on the memory, some people just need it either for movies or just files in general.
i'm grandfathered in to unlimited, i have wi-fi at home, work, and college to boot, i have a tablet with 48gb and a full-size usb to slap my thumb drives into, and a great cloud setup via dropbox, google music, splashtop, and photobucket. i simply have more storage then i know what to do with...
i feel for those who have to skimp by deleting this and that just to have room.
here are some links to some good devices that are cheap and would make you a little happier, honestly, if your upgrading, i would sell the phone and keep something like an atrix around, you could afford all this stuff and a decent year old phone for the price of a one x.
acer a500 tablet: 16gb, sdcard, full usb, 10.1" 1280x800, tegra 2 ~$230
32gb micro sdcard ~$22-30
32gb thumb drive ~$19-22
total=~$275
movies are better, ps3 controllers work perfectly, a wireless mouse is fine, battery lasts me 3 days, you can turn it into a laptop, has icecream 4.0 roms, and on and on...
i'm mean seriously, if you want entertainment be smart. you don't need the top of the line phone to have fun, try something that is here now and cheap.
but what ever, that was the longest 2 cents i think i have ever wrote...and i doubt anybody will listen lol.

While your thoughts are sound, you'll never win this arguement with everyone, myself included!
Cloud storage is great, but only works if your always connected. I am an airline pilot. I need local storage on my phone for photos, music, docs etc and cannot use the cloud while literally in the cloud.
You know what I can't wait for? For my airline to get free, unlimited inflight wifi. Then my arguement becomes mute and 16gb on a phone will be more than enough. Before you say you wouldn't want your Pilots using wifi, we could update our weather with maps, notams, etc far easier with tablets etc than the airplanes equipement. I know I'm going off topic here, but while most (not all) of my First Officers use ipads, I prefer my galaxy tab. When they see maps and approach plates on the wider screen instead of that unnatural squarish ipad screen, they all ask me "what's that!!!!".
At any rate, different people have different needs. I use dropbox, google docs for non aviation and union stuff, google + photo upload, I live in Canada so no google music but I prefer to have my music locally. Videos, whole dif matter, a 15 minute hi def video can be close to a gig, it sucks to have a great phone with a great camera and before taking video you might have to see if you have the space!
You know an easy solution? The Iphone comes in three storage solutions, so should the one series. Cloud enough for you, buy the cheap 16gb version, partial cloud type of guy? 32gb it is, music and video nut? Here's an expensive 64gb variant for you! Can anyone argue that is a bad idea for a company trying to turn their fortunes around? If the galaxy s3 outsells the one series in North America, their handicaped storage will be one reason (pun intended) why.

i fully agree with this, although it would probably end in a lawsuit.
all the flagships should have options and only be refreshed once a year, it's so silly how android makers have splintered the market just to have that extra feature that sells just that many more phones (looking at you samsung).

Getting serious though, as Pilot's we have a "sterile cockpit" rule (most airlines are the same) when descending through 10,000'. That's usually the same time I select the seatbelt sign on (unless it's earlier due turbulence), so i'm putting away my toys the same time you are. The exception would be approach plates, alot of us use tablets for those nowadays.
Got to add, I love my phone / tablet combo. My phone alone replaced my phone, calculator, E6B, mp3 player, gameboy, camera and more. My tab replaced all my manuals, and approach plates, and no more library books in my bag. Some of those things are for overnights in the hotel btw. The ability to quickly check weather and other info anywhere, chat realtime with maintenance while sending pics etc etc and even 10 years ago seems like the dark ages!
Technology and gadgets......f*ck yeah!

This is a great way to implement the new technology. Instead of carrying around 30 LBS of products, you now have two lightweight devices that do everything for you. Same goes for my job and countless others... but it always makes me happy to hear people taking advantage of them.
Hi Everyone,
I'm very interested in the Infinity and am currently deciding between this and the Nexus 10. I wanted to ask if anyone has experience using their Infinity for photography purposes. Is it a useful tool whilst travelling? With the USB and SD connections, it seems like it would be.
Has anyone used Photoshop Touch on it and how does it run?
I travel a lot and have a Sony NEX-6. Whilst travelling I would want to review and do some minor editing on certain photo's. I would then keep a selection of favourites from each trip on the device and transfer the remainder to a HDD. Would all this be possible with the Infinity, or would it be too slow?
Cheers,
Mike

I'm also photographer and traveler. I haven't used Photoshop Touch yet, but my only suggestion is to get a mouse or a nice stylus. Also, I just read the Photoshop Touch specs on the Play Store and it says only supports up to 12MP images. I have a Canon T2I which shoots at 18MP. I don't like the idea of having to reduce my photos.

What do you use to make minor adjustments to any photo's, if anything? Also, how do you find the speed at which it reads the memory cards and transfers the photo's? Thanks
I did exactly this, works great, 64 gb class 10 micro on an adaptor to full size for the camera, pull out and straight into the tablet too check out the snaps, was great. Used quick pic for the viewer, didn't do much Photoshop stuff at all to, leave that to the pc.

I have used the dock to transfer my images (Nikon D90, RAW but not immensely large, mind you) to the internal memory and microSD. It works well, but the programs I have used to see the pictures on screen can only use the embedded JPEG -- which, in my opinion, is inadequate to properly evaluate an image.
If purely oriented towards a backup-creating process (negating the seeming lack of digital negative evaluation options -- more on that in the last paragraph), the TF700 could fit in nicely.... Obviously, this depends on a lot of factors, such as the number of shots you make in a session, their file size, working conditions (access to regular power supply, location and climate of shooting, etc.) and availability of memory cards and so on, and so forth. (This might be obvious to you, but I'm just adding this for people who might be less experienced in the matter, purely as considerations.)
I haven't used PS Touch yet, but I've heard it said that its options are relatively limited and crude by photographers far more experienced than I am -- especially given the high standards of its desktop sibling. I use Aviary:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aviary.android.feather
although I like Photo Editor as well:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iudesk.android.photo.editor
A good stylus will certainly help, as it keeps the screen a bit cleanlier -- the fatty smudges do interfere with clarity and rendition, especially when under harsher lighting conditions. Also, for most people, it's a lot thinner than their fingers allowing for more precise control.
I have been taken down lately with a double pneumonia, have young kids and hospital shifts to work, and had my eyesight corrected by LASER in December last year (and the eyesight is appreciably worse than my previously damn near perfect eyesight with glasses) ---- the photography has been put on hold for now. (Not for technical reasons, but I just enjoy it a lot less currently. It's a shame, I know, but it's the same with me and my then-new motorcycle. ) Therefore, I haven't looked around for a proper RAW import/conversion solution that could actually contribute to (or make some groundwork for) the workflow normally done at a desktop system. Sorry.

Amazingly, Android's built-in gallery has a nice, albeit basic compliment of effects. The degree of control is less than then you might find other places, but I'm a fan of Picasa's desktop featureset and I prefer suttle changes to my photos. If you need to make changes to saturation or contrast, or go black and white then the Android app will do it.
Don't bother using Photoshop Touch. It's more for Art than Photography.
I use RawVision by caketuzz and PicShop - Photo Editor by esDot Development Studio.
It did take about 30 hoops just to be able to buy them. Dear Google, Europe doesn't use bloody credit cards.
Keep in mind the I/O issue, copying might take longer than you're used to.

I just used mine for a trip to Tanzania, wanting to minimize weight and size as much as possible. Worked very nicely as a laptop replacement.
I have 64gb MicroSD Class 10 in the Tablet, and another 64gb SD Class 10 in the Dock. I used a Lexar UDMA Card reader to transfer both CF and SD cards from my Canon 1D Mark IV and my wife's Canon 7D, using X-Plorer or the built-in File Manager to handle the file copying. Worked surprisingly fast.
I used Photo Mate Professional for image review. It does use the built-in Jpeg for preview, but there is an advantage to this. When I use Bridge, I have to allow a considerable amount of time to generate the preview files, while with its using the Jpeg, they're ready for review right away. I just had to be conservative in my culling, to make sure I didn't delete otherwise good images. But it was still fairly easy to eliminate images that were clearly out of focus or otherwise not worth keeping.
I used a USB powered Seagate 500gb External HD as my second backup. It worked fine when plugged into the USB port on the Dock, and was also faster than I might have thought. All in all, it ended up being a very small and practical system.
Photo Mate Professional does have some editing capabilities, but honestly I had so little free-time (we were out shooting for almost all daylight hours, and when back at our lodges, there wasn't much time or energy for more than just the basics). I will check out some of the other editors mentioned.
The battery life was quite good, and the display was gorgeous. HD Videos from each camera looked extremely good, and played quite well, on the display.
One drawback with the Android OS - there is no recycle bin. If you inadvertently delete an image, it's gone for good. This did create some problems, and I had to leave one CF card unused for the rest of the trip, so I could recover some video files when I returned. I'll have to see if there is any 'recover' apps for Android that would do this.
PM or Email me if you'd like any additional details.
Good luck!

Thank you Don, that is a fantastic reply, very helpful.
I'm leaning closer to this tablet everyday. Have you installed a custom ROM on yours or do you just run as it came? How do you find the speed, as this seems to be the biggest complain (Mainly with the I/O).
I don't need any strong editing software. I'm in no way a professional photographer, more of an amateur with a keen interest. especially whilst travelling. So a small Tablet solution would be useful for my travels and I plan to sell my 08' Macbook and just live off the tablet.

Glad this was helpful.
I'm purely stock ROM, JB 4.1.1 - no root, no ROM, etc.
The speed in general I found to be just fine. Working with Photo Mate Professional, moving from one file to the next, zooming in, etc., was reasonably and acceptably quick. Not instantaneous, but quite workable. When I played around with its editing function, this was slower, but I haven't done much to see if this could be optimized further with its settings options.
When WiFi was available, it functioned just fine for email, browsing, Skype, Google Voice for texting, etc. So quite serviceable as a laptop replacement for those functions.

A few other comments:
As far as I can see, the various photo editors mentioned elsewhere in this thread will not work with Raw files, if you shoot Raw (which I strongly recommend if you're reasonably serious about your photography): Photo Editor, Aviary, PicShop Photo Editor, etc. They probably work just fine with jpegs.
RawVision is able to work with Raw files, but apparently has a problem with folders with a large number of files. I also used RawDroid on my trip, and it proved unworkable for the same reason - it stopped working when opening a folder with a few hundred images in it.
So far Photo Mate Professional is the best app I've found to work with Raw Files.

I'm not a photographer but I have used ps touch with some success. I must agree that a stylus or mouse is a big help. Not to hijack, but what dont you like about your LASIK? I had it one year ago and i am happy with the results.

NP, will answer this as short as I can while not skipping stuff. If you want to know more, PM me, OK? Thanks in advance. Here goes.
I did not have a traditional LASEK or LASIK -- I had an EPI-LASIK. It involves scraping off the epithelium of the cornea, refraction surgery, and then a week of growing the epithelium back.
Two main reasons for not liking it:
1. I had a visus of 130 before -- so 30% more acuity than the average "very good" vision; came in handy in the military -- and while I knew beforehand that they cannot reach that level of refraction correction at this point in time, I'm rather disappointed with the loss of acuity in relative terms. I did win in terms of comfort: going swimming with my kids, showering, all kinds of other stuff, all without glasses -- but, for example, taking the motorcycle for a ride has been a no-no for me the past year.
OK, except for the trip to Breda (about 150 km) to get the TF700 before it retail. That was too much.
2. The dry eyes... Oh, the dry eyes...

It was called "Undelete"... Since Android does not have an actual "Recycle Bin" feature, the reliability is dependent on the apps' code itself. I tested it in the past, and it did dependently recover a few images for me I deleted (on purpose, of course). However...
I don't have the backup apk file anymore, it seems, but I am more than a bit disconcerted by it not being available anymore on the Play Store. (It is an app from the Google Market era, but Google transplanted everything to the Play Store... Could it have been one of the apps containing malicious code in that infamous wave back then? File recovery software is a well-known route for viruses, Trojans, etc., -- especially in the case of image recovery software, where the images' owner will probably do anything possible to recover his/her accidentally-deleted files.
Either that scenario, or the author pulled it from support due to personal reasons, I hope the latter. Luckily, with my Flashing OCD at the time, the period of data harvesting would have been limited at best.
Hi Surface Owners!
I am still debating which tablet to get and have recently included the Surface in the list. Of the current crop of tablets available, it's between the Nexus 10 and Surface RT. I'm not sure what will be announced at MWC, but i'll keep an eye out obviously.
I wanted to get your advice, as most of the people reading will own a surface. How do you find it now a few months on from release?
I will be selling my Macbook, so my new tablet is going to be my go to for the time being. I will be going travelling for several months, so this will be it's main use. I am wanting something that I can connect either my camera or SD card to so I can download photo's on to the device but also from the device to an external HDD. Obviously using it for entertainment will be a big thing, as well as to plan out parts of our journey and using the internet. I wouldn't mind if I could do some very minor photo editing also. Can anyone let me know what the photo app is like on the device, also if there are any decent photo apps on the marketplace.
So the surface looks like a winner in terms of the USB and SD card slots, making it easier to connect whilst travelling. But the Nexus wins on the screen and probably power. I used Android already on my phone so am used to it, but I quite like the interface on Windows 8 as it's something new. Android and IOS get a bit boring after a long time...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. If anyone owns both tablets it would be great to hear your thoughts also.
Cheers,
Mike
Surface RT is my current ultra-portable computer, and it works well for that so long as it's not all that I have for an extended time. I miss the stylus that my old tablet had (an advantage of the Surface Pro) but do not find that, for example, the kickstand of the RT makes it hard to use on my lap (the way some reviewers have claimed). I have the Touch Cover (and am in fact writing this on it); it works great and you can type quite quickly and with perfect touch-typing muscle memory after a short time of using it.
Prior to the Surface RT, my most portable computer was an old Core 2 Duo ULV (1.2GHz) HP tablet, with a stylus but no touchscreen, 12" screen with 1280x800 resolution, 5 hours battery life (when new), 4GB of RAM (came with 1GB, upgraded immediately), an 80gb 4200RPM 1.8" magnetic hard disk, and 3.5lb weight. I loved it. Still use it, actually; it runs Win8 quite well aside from not being able to use Metro snapping. However, in almost every way possible, the Surface Pro blows it away. For less than the cost of old HP tablet (which was about $1500 new), I can upgrade the C2D to a quad-core chip with over twice the speed per core, I can upgrade the digitizer and add multitouch, I can trade in the 12" screen for one with far higher DPI, I can massively improve the storage by going solid-state instead of rotational (and can get 128GB), and I can keep the 5 hour battery life. The things I would lose are the ability to upgrade the RAM (4GB is a bit low, IMO) and storage (not that I ever did upgrade the old 1.8" drive) and the replaceable battery (I'll live). Oh, and swapping full SD for MicroSD and 2 USB 2.0 ports for a single USB 3.0 port, which means I'll probably want to get a hub. Still, it's tempting, and I may well buy myself one even though right now I don't really need it.
I have a Surface RT and use it as my portable device when I don't want to lug around my ultrabook. For some context, I have an iPad and an ASUS Transformer TF-101 as well. Prior to the Surface RT, I used the Transformer for that. But the lack of things that were important to me made the RT the go-to device when it came out.
For me, things like the USB port, MicroSD card, and Microsoft Office were important. Even more important was the built-in support for Bitlocker, so my MicroSD card can be encrypted at all times and easily read by my other Windows 8 machines. And my other external USB hard drives that are also encrypted can be easily opened by the Surface RT. Native VPN client and RDP helps with work as well (I know there are ways to do this with the other tablets).
I have the apps that I need at this point. I'm not a big social media person, so I can't speak to the apps for those things. But there are enough apps of interest to me that keep me satisfied. Can't speak to the photo apps, however. I don't take photos with it, though I have taken video and those were good.
Overall, I'm very happy with the RT. I got it with the Touch Cover and I can actually type fairly well on it. (I've actually had questions from iPad owners asking about the keyboard, if it was available for their devices.)
I had considered waiting for the Surface Pro, but the extra size and weight, plus the shorter battery life (I get great battery life with the RT, BTW), were concerns for me. I could just as well take my ultrabook (had an Asus Zenbook, now a Sony VAIO T13), which is quite a bit faster than the Surface Pro.
For what it's worth.
You can browse the store from any web browser:
http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store
For your use cases:
> I am wanting something that I can connect either my camera or SD card to so I can download photo's on to the device but also from the device to an external HDD.
You will be able to do that so long as your camera doesn't need extra drivers to show up (as a USB store) or you use a USB reader for the removable media.
> Obviously using it for entertainment will be a big thing, as well as to plan out parts of our journey and using the internet.
Great web browser. Can play most video, Audio...
> I wouldn't mind if I could do some very minor photo editing also.
Check the store...
> Can anyone let me know what the photo app is like on the device, also if there are any decent photo apps on the marketplace.
The built in photo app is pretty basic.
I would expect you could get by with the surface rt - get the 64gb one, and get a 64gb card...
I took one on a week cruise (along with a netbook for backup) and was able to use just the surface for the whole trip, including dumping GoPro video and digital camera shots to the surface and then onto an external USB disk.
Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated.
Just a quick note, I meant gallery app, to look and browse / organise your photos, not the camera app to take photos. I laugh when I see people taking photos with there tablet ha ha. I like the way the ipad shows your photos by map, gallery and a journal function for example.

The Photo album app that comes with the RT is very basic. You may want to check out apps in the store that have more functionality.

Nope.
Really basic. Grid of photos, or slideshow/swipe browse full screen. That's what you get.
What you are saying about getting bored with the other operating systems is exactly why I made Surface my choice. I've been playing with android for the last 7 years. And thanks to all the devs here at xda I was able to make all of my devices do exactly what I wanted.. But it was time for something totally different. I made the right decision. To be honest, at the beginning, learning the new ui was frustrating! :crying: Because I was having trouble finding things and when I did it didn't seem be consistent through the ui.... After about 3 days it all started to come together very well... you'll find that the system is actually set up quite well. I found everything I needed in the store. I'm very pleased with the purchase.
So any 2.5" hard drive will work with the Surface RT? Wow, I'm a bit surprised here. I thought there might not be enough power to power up a hard drive. Is the USB port capable of supporting a USB hub? My plan is to connect at least a 2-port USB hub, and transfer photos from my camera to the portable hard drive. If the Surface RT can do that, then I may not need to consider the Surface Pro even though it have USB 3.0.

I agree with you and that's what I love about the iOS photo app. Does anyone here know of a photo app for Windows RT that can show my photos base on its location data?
So, all in all, are people happy with the device? What are the major issues to be concerned with, if any?
No major issues.
For the same price in Canada, the Asus ME400 offers Windows 8 x86 so I went with that due to needing Java/Cisco for remote connectivity to work. I did not regret owning surface. There was nothing majorly wrong with it, I loved the full USB port (which the Asus does not have). Surface RT use s a proprietary charger vs the Asus which uses micro-usb charger. Surface charges faster.
If the app you want is not in the app store, or you need drivers for your devices, that could be a problem. Note that Surface RT does not offer a full size SD card slot, only a micro. You can't put your camera card directly into Surface unless you are using microsd.
Build quality is top notch, the kickstand is great, battery life is very good, and Windows RT is pretty slick.
USB hubs work, but unless you use a powered hub (and power it from the wall or another source), you're still going to be limited by the relatively meager power of the Surface RT's single USB port. It's enough for a 2.5" disk of at least 5400 RPM (haven't tried 7200 RPM yet) but funning (for example) a mouse and a hard drive off of it might be too much.
It's sounding pretty positive so far! I keep reading reviews though and none seem to be great! But I think most of the companies doing the reviews are stuck half way up Apple's ass.
I keeping an eye on a few auctions ending on Ebay tonight, to see if I can pick up a bargain, fingers crossed! If not, I will probably purchase one from John Lewis over the next two weeks.
I've read a few sites that think Microsoft will drop the price on the RT soon, do you think this will happen? All speculation I guess, no one really knows..
The other thing is, they don't seem to hold there value well. Where as the Nexus 10, you could almost make money on if you decided to sell due to it being hard to get.

They expected an iPad with a windows logo. They got a Windows tablet instead. Coupled with the need to dogpile on the new UI, and as you said the large number of Apple Experts With Very Short Memories, and the review effect isn't shocking.
I have a Surface RT and I love it! I use it for nearly everything. I use remote desktop or team viewer for anything that requires x86 apps.
Its brilliant to use around the house! my wife has her Nexus 7 and has to switch between that and her laptop every so often while I just use the Surface.
When my laptop dies which wont be long (though it could be longer as I don't use it now) then I plan on getting a Surface Pro. The build quality of it (Surface RT) is outstanding. I had an issue with the touch cover, contacted Surface support and they were amazing, got a new touch cover no questions asked and in quick time, reported the issue at around 1400 and got the new one at around 1300 the following day! I cant recommend it enough. Everyone I show it is impressed with near enough everything it can do, the only downside is that not all the apps I used to use on Android are available, but Android is coming up to its 5th Birthday in October and that will be 1 year of Win RT.
25'879 are in the Windows Store as of writing and if, this is a big if, Microsoft can some how link the WP store and the WinRT store then it has massive potential.
I only wish that Microsoft really pushed hard on getting these into people hands. In the UK John Lewis is a very repeatable store but that is the only brick and mortar place you can get one. In nearly every store I go these day there is a gadget area selling iPads and Androids, come on Microsoft lets have you back at the top of the tech tree, where you were when you bailed out Apple!
So I've gone ahead an purchased. I managed to get a bargain! £425 for a brand new Surface RT 64GB with black touch cover! Hopefully will arrive tomorrow, fingers crossed. Really want a blue touch cover, so might sell the black and get a blue.
Anything I should know before I first switch on and setup?
After some more usage with the RT, I'm quite liking it. There's definitely lag, especially on games. "Rat On A Snowboard" even lags and there's nothing even going on with that! Something isn't right and a Tegra3 should be able to at least handle ROAS.
Otherwise, "Mobile.HD" works brilliantly so that's a major plus. I've got the UK Netflix showing on my Metro UI, and then I can access the US Netflix using the browser so very pleased with that. "Pow!" seems decent for comics. "Tome" for Goodreads.
But the games really are a letdown. Hardly any decent games and what ones are there run very poorly. I realise it's not an iPad and that'd be more suited for games etc but the Tegra3 works great on the Nexus 7 and it's just not working right in the RT. Whether that's due to the Nexus 7 using all of the Tegra3 cores and the RT not using them all, or whether it's poor coding, or a problem with RT itself, I haven't got a clue. But it's not as fluid as it could/should be.
Surface RT
Again in context I have laptop Dell Duo Flip screen. Nexus 7, Playbook 64gb ( I like gadgets). I was considering a Surface RT or Surface Pro.
But I ended up with a RM Slate 100 (EXOPC) 2gb Memory, 32gb mini pe ssd card (also spare slot for second ssd card or gps unit, 2 usb ports full size, HDMI out, SD Card slot (I added 32gb 45mb sec) 11.6 inch screen I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro. in all it cost me £180 pounds.
it was a gamble but the result is a very capable Surface Pro look alike. Any wireless keyboard will work when needed. Linked to my Nexus with a mouse and keyboard simulator it works great through plasma TV via HDMI. Skydrive adds another 48gb storage, dropbox for moving files around.
Added bonus Android for X86 works as well from SD Card .
Boot time 20 sec with Office 2010 loaded. Program start times ready to go Word 3 sec, Excel 1.8 sec, Outlook 4.5 sec, Paintshop Pro X5 31 sec.
Any one else put together a surface pro look alike.
How does a Surface compare.
I have the Asus VIVO Tab RT which uses same OS. I love it as an ultra portable tablet/laptop but one thing I really hate is the browser. I just hate IE10 on Windows 8/Windows RT and wish Chrome or Firefox would release a browser for RT.
I just received my Surface RT 64GB with a black touch cover. First impressions are fantastic! I love the look and feel of the device. Just from setting it up, i'm amazed at just how responsive the touch cover is! I think I'll get used to it very quickly. Doing the updates now so haven't played much, but very happy thus far! Still would like a blue touch cover though!
Hi all, I am currently deciding between each tablet experience and I am stuck on a decision. I have read a few times some posts here and on other websites about each device and it seems to be...
gaming/media - nexus
productivity/ s pen - note
however my needs kind of fit all four and I can live without the s pen.
I read alot
I am a teacher so I need to be able to annotate books and pdfs
I also want to plug a keyboard in a type emails/ documents from time to time
but (just incase the surface rt is mentioned) I love android and I love media and games.
I really want the best and most future proof experience.
Now I currently have a note and I do like it, but I can get a nexus for a good price but would need to sell the note.
I like both touchwiz and vanilla android (as I had a nexus 4) and for me really, speed is important (one element I do like about iOS).
So.. which device would be best? Thanks.
p.s. I plan to pair either one with either the asus fonepad or nexus 7.
A big plus for me with the note is the micro sd slot. But if space is not an issue then probably the nexus for speed and resolution.
I traded a Nexus 4 for my Note 2 and feel the Nexus 4 doesn't even come close to the Note 2 at least for me.
If you plan on plugging in a keyboard you may want to look around the edge of your note very closely.

If you can wait a little man, I sure Samsung and Google with be releasing new variants of the devices real soon already in hearing rumours of the new nexus 7 coming with full hd, and I'm sure the new note 10.1 will have octo core with 3 gigs of ram
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda app-developers app
So the 2 big things for me were the not has memory expansion...
I have a 32gb internal note with 64gb sd card and am filling these up...
Because of the new additions to android and the greater resolution and capabilities of the new tablets, games are getting bigger and bigger. I downloaded a game the other day that required over 1gb of additional files, not to mention game saves... A small internal memory, 16gb, is no good as I filled that one too fast.
Now you might not get a lot of big games like that but I find a few apps fills things up pretty quick especially if you add in video files, music and text/doc/pdf files...
The 2nd for me was the ability to make and receive calls on my tablet, I have the N8000, as it can be a pain if you have to keep reaching for your phone. A bluetooth headset and my not allow me to make/receive calls and still find the data I need to share. This might not be a biggie for you but it's so easy not to have to hunt down my phone if I need to make a call.
I haven't found any problems with speed, I run a stock , rooted rom and it's blazingly fast as long as I don't fill up the internal memory too much.
The screen is fine, unless you are actually comparing screens all the time you won't see the difference as you can use the resolution its got fine. I watch shows and movies on mine all the time and no complaints here...
Love the speakers, the fact they are located on the front means the sound is directed to you, the user, not to everyone else in front of you.
Most apps work fine though I have found a few that require sideloading. There's also a few that are s-pen specific.
Interface is easy to use and if you don't like it find another like Apex or Nova...
S-pen is of course the be all and end all of why you would buy this over any other android tablet. It makes life SOOOO much easier, is fantastic when it comes to annotating PDF's and writing, makes drawing fantastic as the wacom digitiser recognises how hard or softly you press the pen to the tablet and gives a corresponding line width. Also a lot more precise than just the rubber stylus that you can get for the other tablets.
Overall I was happy with my purchase of the Note. It's a good work horse, Allows me to work or play, sometimes both at the same time, and hasn't let me down yet...
The only real complaint I have is why Samsung decided to not allow a USB HDD to run. You can plug a memory stick in with no problems but plug in a 2.5" portable HDD and you get the dreaded " A High Powered USB Has Been Detected" . Considering I have an Acer A501 that uses the 1Tb HDD with no problems this was a disappointment, but then again I have got the sd card and the USB key to use so not too much of a problem...
Can't say anything about the nexus as I don't have 1. Sorry, no help there but you might get some idea about the Note.
Cheers...
Buy either. The note is great but the screen is outdated. Better wait the the next version of the note
If you're going to be annotating more than just a little, I'd say you need the stylus to keep from going insane.. Otherwise, there isn't much I'd add for either side.
Anyone heard anything about how much of that 128 GB storage is actually available to use out of the box? I don't see it listed anywhere on Google's own site, and none of the reviews I've watched have mentioned this. I figure the OS and pre-installed apps have got to take up some of that, but I'd like to know how much exactly.

System shouldn't take more than 15GB, apps etc... still leaves you w/ over 100GB. If you use it up w/ pics and videos carry a little USB-C dongle on your key chain for an easy otg file transfer/save.

Mostly just have a lot of music stored locally on my phone. Started doing that years ago when I worked underground and while we were allowed to listen to music while we worked, I couldn't get a signal, so no streaming of any kind was possible. Even though I've been working from home for the past 2 years or so, I still find I prefer to listen to my own music, so having enough storage is a key metric for me.
The Pixel 4a should have enough, but I'd feel more comfortable if I had a little more storage to work with. May end up waiting until the Pixel 4a 5G and the Pixel 5 are released and then see what's what. Also interested in the Nokia 8.3 5G since it's part of the Android One program (so updates should be nearly as fast as Google's own Pixel line-up), and it has an SD card slot, so no worries about storage there.

That's pretty comparable to what I have. Right now I've got about 48g of music, so factoring in other apps I'd be using I'd probably be okay. I don't play games or really take many pictures, so it sounds like I'd have a good amount of storage left over, and still have room to grow.
Just an update that I found a review that listed the available storage - about 108GB according to Techradar:
https://www.techradar.com/reviews/google-pixel-4a
According to a review by the Youtube channel "Technikfaultier", the system used 13.7GB after the first setup.
Pixel 4a
The pixel 4a comes with 128 GB of storage and 6GB Ram. it does not support microSD card.
System uses 12 GB after first set-up
