So, I haven't seen this topic talked about yet, apart from manufacturer claims of the usual hundreds of hours of standby.
Having now had the TC for almost a week, I'm not at all happy with the battery life, and hoping it's either a faulty battery or something I'm not doing right.
Today, I've made a 2 or 3 short phone calls and downloaded a few emails, and it's down to 30% at 5pm! Most other days have been the same.
I do have bluetooth and HSDPA on, but not Wi-Fi. Surely, this won't be another case of, "buy this great phone with all the fast connections, but stick to 2G GSM because of the battery life".
Any help gratefully received, as I love the TC apart from this problem.
Data connections come from the "TalkTime" budget, not the "Standby" budget, so if you leave your HDSPA connection connected, or your Bluetooth on, it will drain the battery in about 7 hours.
My tests seem to indicate that HTC's estimates are reasonable within about 85%, if you understand what they're saying. If you leave your phone switched off, doing absolutely nothing in the background ("Standby"), then I've got about 200 hours out if it. But as soon as you start using the phone (which includes switching it on - the increased processor usage and backlight take more power than Standby) the overall battery budget is reduced.
An example - if you spend 1 hour online, you've used 1/7th of your TalkTime budget, but you've also used 1/7th of your Standby budget - the hour of talktime is equivalent to about 30 hours of standby...
It's marketing speak, sadly, but given USB recharging, etc., as long as the phone makes it to a laptop or socket each evening, I'm pretty happy with the battery life on my Touch Cruise - just remember to disconnect data connections when you're not using them, don't check for new mail every 5 minutes and only use IMAP IDLE when you really need it...
I too was first disappointed but I had almost everything that uses data switched on or on automatic like weather and emails.
So I set everything to manual and batt is good with some calls. Before when I tapped on the top bar there was always something connecting or showing connected for a x number of mins. But now it shows 'No data session active' and batt is holding up nicely for all my calls + what I need like GPS etc.
I do put TC on heavy use and I am quite satisfied with the fact that TC makes it through the day.. Most of the PDAs and phones I have used forced me to carry secondary battery with me..
I can only go on my heavy day to day business use with push mail 24h, 20+ calls, few hours of TomTom and bit of forum reading!! But it´s a very big improvement on my Kaiser which would be empty by 7pm. Whereas the Polaris is still around 50-45%
Can anyone tell me how much battery life can one expect for mp3 playback?

Something's either wrong with my hardware, battery, or config.
Are you in a 3G HSPDA area? I am, and wondering whether or not that's killing the battery.
If it's the battery, I doubt I'll get an exchange, seeing as most places are sold out of TC's still.
Do you use Windows Live? I don't have MSN Messenger running, but I think it syncs all folders on my hotmail every 2 hours.
I don't use Windows Live or the messenger. I'm now using HTC Mail which gives you a free 3 months trial of their Microsoft Exchange Server account. It works really well and seems to use less battery than the Windows Live, which I had previously used.... and most of the time I use the basic "G" (GPRS) connection although when surfing the net I change the connection to 3G.
Hmmm
Thats interesting
Im having a similar problem.
So far, mainly used mine for browsing through wi-fi but the battery drains so quickly. It only lasts a day and a half.
Same usage on my old orbit would last close to a week.
ps - Ive swicthed off all other comm functions
I'd be delighted with a full day! It's such a pain to have to keep plugging it in!
I've now switched off HSPDA, and if that doesn't work, I'll have to switch off 3G. Kind of defeats the object of having a 3G device.

3G/HSPDA uses a lot more power than regular GSM. I keep my phone locked to GSM and only enable 3G when I want to go online, but then I primarily use my phone as a PDA so I don't access the network that often, even for voice.
I think there's a utility floating around these boards called something like BandSwitcher that does something to make it easier to toggle between 3G and GSM. As you can probably tell from my vague description (and I'm not even sure that I got the name right), I haven't got round to investigating this fully myself yet.
By the way, there is another thread here about battery life, started by me (what is it with us Brits and our obsession with battery life?), and called "Dissapointing battery life test" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=356910&highlight=Julian+battery+life). The thread includes a link to a very useful tool written by Muyz and available here (http://www.vandenmuyzenberg.nl/PowerGuard/) that allows you to look at current drain on the device and I posted some data in that thread from my device so you could run the same tests and see if your current draw is comparable to mine. If you do this then please do post your data.

I'm afraid that's a very unhelpful "it depends". It really depends on (a) exactly how you've encoded your MP3 files (bit rate and CBR vs VBR) plus what player you are using to play them.
Having said the above though, I can give you two data points:
1) The Touch Cruise manual claims "Up to 8 hours (WMV). Up to 12 hours (WMA)." (This is on page 249 of the English manual under the power/battery specification.)
2) From measuring current consumption on my device while playing 64kbs AAC HE files I estimate that I'll get somewhere between 9 and 10 hours before I go from 100% charge down to the 10% warning level.
AAC HE is very CPU-intensive to decode. I'm not sure how WMA compares to MP3 regarding CPU intensity but I would expect your figures to be more comparable with the WMA figure quoted by HTC and, in light of my AAC HE real life experience, the HTC figure actually seems quite realistic (although nowhere near good enough in my opinion).
I hope that helps somewhat.

My average day.
Off the charger at 6:15AM
Make about 5 to 7 calls each about 5 to 10 minuets
3G HSPDA on with exchange server running always conected
Back light at MAX off after 30 seconds of non use
30 or so text messages
Agile Messanger on all the time conected to AIM and Yahoo. About 2 to 3 comversations each day.
Around 10 to 15 minuets of web surfing to read the news and what not
Bluetooth always on but only used in my car (BMW iDrive) about 1.5 hous of driving
About 20 to 30 minuets of playing S Tris 2 (Yeah I know but I can't help it I love that game)
About 30 to 45 minuets of MP3 playing while at the gym
Ringer set to Vib then ring
Back on the charger by 11:30PM

That's fantastic, my battery MUST be faulty! Oh, and thanks very much for taking the time to write all that down!
I'll leave it another week or so playing with turning things on and off, and if I can't get a full day, I'll order another battery, and be hardcore about the 16 hour charge for the first three charges.
When it comes to my batteries I am a stickler when it comes to conditioning them. I always do a full discharge and recharge for at least 3 cycles. It may be inconvenient the first few times because you can run out of power in the middle of the day when you really can’t wait for a recharge, but in the long run its worth it. On the weekend when I use my TC the least I get 2 full days out of it.

Looks like it's paid off!
I've had my second day now where it's lasted a day! Last night it had 40% on it at 0100, and so far at 1700 it's still on 70%. The reason? I turned off HSDPA on Sat, and it really seems to have made the difference. The internet still runs very fast as well.

Hi
Where did you get this info from? I've heard of ppl doing so for NiCd days, but never heard of doing it to LiOn or LiPoly batteries.
Hi all
someone knows, if powering OFF the TC suspends the WIFI-connection
so that it will not discharge the battery?
On my elder HP, I let the WIFI on, switch off the device,
and I couldn't remark a greater change in the battery after one nighgt.
On TC, when switching OFF the unit with WIFI ON,
the battery is empty after one night.
Tanks

Hi,
How long does it last for you guys? It has been less than a day for me. Is there something wrong?? If I have MSN through HSDPA on then it'll die out in like mid-day.
Is there a way to extend the battery life?

Usually if i run skype / otroralk (for gtalk) + listening mp3 it stands about a day.
Same here. It usually lasts about a day for me too. That's when I'm using Wifi and listening to MP3s.
HSDPA consumes a lot of power, in the 200-300mA range. Considering the Polaris battery has a capacity of 1300mAh, if you stay connected to HSDPA all the time with screen lit you will get something like 5-6 hours battery life, and my personal experience confirms that.
Just don't keep your data connection open all the time, or disable HSDPA. EDGE consumes half as much power, plain GSM something like one tenth.
Thanks guys,
This is really sucks...in terms of battery life
Seems to me that there 2 unavoidable givens with thiis device, despite the best efforts of those on this forum now and in the future:
1. its slow
2. battery life is poor
Cruel but true?
I simultaneously run TomTom for navigation, run.gps for route tracking (TT is using GPS so figure I may as well make good use of it!) and coreplayer for music (through earphones) with the pda on screen lock while on my motorbike and get just c. 4-5 hours Obviously would like more. How much power does the GSM/GPRS signal use? Any significant advantage in power use in turning phone off (can't answer it while on bike anyway!)?
Today, from 100%:
40 minutes of FM radio playing on way to work
Wrote several emails and texts during the day
Used gmaps with gps for about 1/2 hour at lunch
Refreshed RSS on Egress to read on the loo (including Engadget and Daily WTF - lots of images)).
3 hours mp3 at gym/on way home
a few texts and 2 mms this evening
About 1hrs worth of calls this evening
Now, 22:00, battery at 60%. That was a busy day for me - a normal day - constant exchange sync, 1hr mp3/radio and 1/2 texts - battery would still be at 80-90%.
I'd say that's quite impressive. Compared to my old Hermes it's amezin' (a la Scott Mills).
Admittedly, this is Edge network on 02. With my T-mobile sim with HSDPA on it wouldn't be nearly as good.
Hi nahguam,
I noticed when using HSDPA...it really heats up and takes double the battery life out of it.
How did you link up google map with your gps? Google map can't seem to find my gps for me.
I'm using AT&T's 3G network 95% of my day and I have been happy with the battery life. I have been keeping my screen brightness about the third lowest setting. I have my email checking often and I use the WMP about 45-60 minutes a day.
I came from an Atom Life and E10 X800 and had to plug them in very often, so the Touch Cruise has a great battery life in my opinion.

Yea, if I'm Internet Sharing with HSDPA it get's really hot.
For gmaps with GPS I have left gmaps settings as "Set by Windows"
In Start > Settings > System tab : External GPS, I have these settings:
Programs tab : COM4
Hardware tab : (None) , baud rate: 4800
Access: Manage GPS automatically is checked.
Greetings peeps,
I just wanted to pop in and ask how you guys are doing with the battery life.
Reason I ask is over xmas I had alot of interaction with my N5, but it wasn't exactly an extreme use.
I got 3 hours SOT before shut down and the phone managed a whole 8 hours powered on time. I know not amazing.
now in contrast I knocked my N5 off my wireless charger while in bed last night, I checked what the battery life was like. In a rather shocking contrast, the phone had been on for 10 hours and had dropped 10% or 1% per hour if you prefer.
I just can't fathom what's going on, I appreciate it was sitting there doing nothing, but my syncs are the same as the other day and were looking at 8 hours vs 100 hours can anyone shed some light on what might be causing this, alot of the time my drain is the screen and i've employed LUX to alter the high brightness to something more fitting to the surroundings. But i still sync G+ Fb and Twitter, I sync all of my Google account but thats it.
the 5 hours while it drained when the screen was off the other day, when i managed only 8 hours, it wasn't draining at 1% an hour. soo what gives, if we take the screen out of the equation and look at those 5 hours, that should have been 5% charge, not the remaining battery.
I've used betterbatterystats and doesn't show any particular items drawing battery.
While it's only play services which tops the list on the battery list in settings, thats the highest, but again it's like 4 minutes, not 8 hours!
So any help is welcome.
Over night it lost only 2% battery. The nexus survives (without any problems) 24hours with 5hrs SOT. Of course it depends on user's behaviour. I dont play ganes but i am using wifi 3g and navi for min. 4hrs (smtimes more) and in the evening i still have over 30-40%. Important: have stock 4.4.2 and ElementalX kernel 0.18, undervolted and max 1,5GHz

what about battery life when listening music with hands free and playing mp3 ecc?
i m not sure guys but everyone is complaining about battery..
it s so frustrating
it makes me re consider buying or not buying
Battery is completely based on usage and how often the phone needs to wake itself. When the screen is off my N5 will essentially never wake itself unless for a message, phone call, or update.
I even have Google Now enabled so I can still set and use reminders, but I don't have it searching my weather updates for me. Dashclock does that instead and only updates when I turn the screen on.
With auto syncs off, Wifi always scanning off, and hotword detection off for more SoT I've not been let down by the battery once.

N5 deals especially well with music playback due to it's hardware tunneling feature. An hour of music playback barely registers on my battery listing.

Hey guys,
I just recently got a refurbished phone from T-Mobile's insurance replacement. My brother gave the phone to me instead and opted for something else. So phone right out of the box had 100%, used it lightly and I noticed every 4-5 minutes that i spent looking at the screen the phone would drop between 1-2% and this is just me looking at settings and downloading updates. So I figured maybe it was just the updates being intensive.
So I get my case and screen protector and I turn off my phone and let it charge on off to 100%. Turn it back on and start using it like I normally would (keep in mind if I have stamina on) I like to have my screen brightness at the highest while watching videos so I watch 3 videos over my LTE connection on youtube and then I hope into my car and listen to a audio book that's already downloaded. Time lapse was probably about 30-40 minutes.
When I get home the phone is down to 85%. Is it normal to lose 15% in less then a hour on this phone? This worries me because I want to utilize the life log and during my 9 hour shift at work I listen to spotify about 6 of those hours... maybe I have a dud battery? Every where I go everyone says it lasts all day with moderate use... but at this rate my phone would be dead before my shift even ends...

Um what? What kind of phone did you have before? Did it have better battery life? Because the only phone I've ever had that had better battery than the Z3 was my Z1C (usually 7 hours)
Also, max brightness and 5 minutes per 1%? You know that equals 8 hours of screen-on time? IE a better battery than ANY PHONE ON THE MARKET HAS? You need some perspective, your expectations only make sense if you came from a Nokia 5110
I had a iphone 4S before this. My expectations are like this because every where I read reviews everyone says "insane battery life" "Lasts all day" and even the sony site boasted how the phone can last all day with stamina off and with stamina on it can last 2 days and with stamina ultra supposedly a week. This is why I'm worried about what's going on with my device.
If there are better sources with realistic numbers i'd greatly appreciate it to put me to ease.
I just set all the settings on my phone to get the maximum battery life except ultra stamina and even froze/disabled apps that i don't need. Yet I'm still draining just the same, I like to watch videos on youtube and play spotify and watching vids on youtube for about 30-40 minutes I drain about 10% with all the new settings. Brightness is also on minimum now and have that option for it ticked as well.
Just wanted to give feedback on the phone and having it for a week now. The battery life is truely amazing, It almost drains nothing when in standby its like the phone isn't even on at all yet sync is coming in with updates. This is a great phone and I have yet to have it die on me before getting home.
Hey everyone just a quick question. I am currently on OOS 5.1.5 and have pretty good battery life expect when I use google play music. I came from an Iphone where play music barley sipped any battery and talked to a friend that has a Oneplus 5T who also says that he streams 6 plus hours at work and still finishes his shift with 60 to 65 percent.
Just yesterday I was streaming music for about 4 hours and it completely drained my batter from 70 to 0. At 1 percent I looked at battery stats and it said that google play music used 45 percent of my battery.
On a normal day when I listen in the car. A 15 minute drive will make me lose about 3-4 percent. All of my music is downloaded locally.
Anyone have similar issues?

Do you use an adblocker by any chance? If you do, it's because GPM is coded poorly and keeps pinging googleadservices.com and googletagmanager.com while it's in the background. Whitelist those two sites and you should be good. I went from GPM taking 10% of my battery to 1% of my battery by doing that.
