Oreo keeps stopping GPS when screen off or app in background - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Stock pixel Oreo rom, no root. I need a couple of GPS apps running in the background and when the screen is off, was fine in nougat, but now as soon at the screen goes off or the app is not in the foreground my phone is shutting off GPS even though the apps have notification icons monitoring GPS activity. I've switched off optimisation, phone is plugged in. Any help better than none.

[Q] Background Tasks Stopped

Just the other day I started to notice that none of my background tasks are running. Twitter, facebook, the app market and other built in things function normally, but none of my live tiles related to installed apps are updating at all. They're clearly 'on' in background tasks, I've even tried toggling them. I think toggling the 'battery status' app might let it update the battery for a few 10 minute intervals, but it always stops before reaching battery saver mode.
What's going on? Any fix besides hard resetting?

Android 9 keeps killing the gps when screen is off.

Google Maps can't keep the gps signal on, and 2 minutes after screen turns off, it tells me "gps signal lost".
The app called GPS Keeper is capable of keeping my gps active, so I don't get GPS signal lost message.
But I would rather not use a 3rd party app to fix this issue.
What does GPS Keeper do that Android Pie can't?
Why can't google maps keep the gps signal active while screen is locked, like GPS Keeper can?
I am not running in power saver mode, and google maps has background battery privileges. In the developer options standby apps list, google maps is listed as Active.
Is there a hack that can keep the gps active while using a navigation app, while the screen is turned off?

Workaround for Android Auto freezing on Oppo

Appears to be an issue with the Always on Display. Disabling that should resolve the issue.

Solution : enable developer options, and enable keep screen on while charging.
yup screen on = no Always on display..
though also battery and burn in aint good...
Screen will remain on, but brightness will drop to minimum level as the phone is left idle. When looking at the phone while driving, it looks almost off, the home screen is barely visible.
would be great if someone could build a tasker or Automate task that turned off AOD when AA is running.. though you prob need Root..
Anyone having a issue after C62 update of it just now not connecting at all?
jipp here.
android auto refuses the connection after the update.
My head unit is trying to connect while oppo is asking which usb type should be choosen (load/ android auto/mtp or so)
Selecting android auto results in a connection abort and a short vibration.
Already cleared app data, cache and even reinstalled android auto with no effort.
wow oppo really sucks..
just got CPH2025_11_C.53 - android auto is working flawless again

Hi guys,
I have a Find X2 Lite with CPH2005VF_11_C_78..
after the android 11 update android auto start to freeze switching apps (ex from maps to spotify a 15 seconds black sceen) or when navigating has to turn direction (the cursor start flickering and after a while the navigation resume).
Is this a similar problem to yours? any suggestion?
my oppo f1s always turn off even after restart, how to fix my boss?
Images on the lock screen, crash the Android Auto. It is an OS problem. Here is what to do, till the problem is solved :
-Go to Settings, Security, Smart Lock and and your car a trusted device. That way you have your phone unlocked while driving and fingerprint disappears.
(You can also remove fingerprint from lock screen by going to Settings, Passwords & Biometrics, Fingerprint, Screen-off unlock and select off, but then you have to wake up your phone before being able to use fingerprint)
-Go to Settings, ..Always-On Display, Always-On Display and disable it. (You can also select Always-On Display with battery saver, which turns off image after some seconds, but on those seconds, the Andriod Auto is crashed)
@[email protected]$#[email protected]& OnePlus, OPPO and Color OS...
Same thing at OnePlus 8T with OxygenOS 12 (which is ColorOS 12).
After update to 12 I still have some problems with AA. Now phone is totally unusable (totally laggy or black screen) when connected to AA and after when disconnected - must wait ca. 5 min or restart phone.
But... After reading this tread I turn off AOD. And stil same. Then I turn off also fingerprint reader at turned off display. And... Everything works perfectly
Will test AOD on, FP on and Smart Lock at my car. But OPPO is a joke...

Android 11 cannot keep GPS signal with screen off. Any apps or hacks that can fix this?

I don't want to keep my phone screen on during navigation. I just need voice navigation. So I keep my screen on while driving.
In older versions of android, there were apps that could hold the gps signal while the screen was off.
Now with Android 11, when the screen is off for 1 minute, google maps shouts "gps signal lost"
and sure enough, the gps signal was cut out until I turned on the screen again.
This aggressive battery saving is not what I want. I even selected not to optimize battery for these gps apps, and every single time it loses gps signal after 1 minute with the screen off.
I have found no app so far that can get around this issue.

Any reliable way to disable Android 11's "sleep/doze/whatever it's called" when the phone is locked?

Here's my issue. I have a smartwatch that's connected via bluetooth and periodically polls the phone to refresh it's data. If the phone is locked for a few minutes, it stops working. If I simply turn the screen on it starts working fine again. I need to disable this behavior and I don't really care about the impact on battery life
I have completely disabled any battery optimization on the device, running stock kernel. I have tried "dumpsys deviceidle disable".
How can I fix this? Really annoying that android decides to shut down certain background apps on its own without giving me a choice. It looks like it's unrelated to battery optimization. Perhaps there's a separate setting for bluetooth that I'm missing?
