Just the other day I started to notice that none of my background tasks are running. Twitter, facebook, the app market and other built in things function normally, but none of my live tiles related to installed apps are updating at all. They're clearly 'on' in background tasks, I've even tried toggling them. I think toggling the 'battery status' app might let it update the battery for a few 10 minute intervals, but it always stops before reaching battery saver mode.
What's going on? Any fix besides hard resetting?

HTC Desire S, not rooted. Original ROM.
Yesterday I noticed my battery starting to plummet FAST.
As in 1% every two minutes I was on wifi.
It had been doing very well with no real issues.
I had installed a new keyboard, which I disabled thinking it might have been that. No go. Still plummeting.
Just under display at 64% was Dialer at 18% This is new, I'd only ever seen it if I'd been on the phone a long time. This time is was eating up the % when I'd never even made a call.
I killed every task I could see trying to find the cause. Nothing.
Then, out of luck, I noticed the sync icon flash for a micro second on the notification bar. It was doing this every 30 seconds.
I Looked around in synching and disabled everything. The icon stopped.
I enabled background data, but turned off auto sync. The icon remained off.
Then on the google part of the sync menu I clicked Google reader, Gmail, Calendar and Contacts .... Contacts came up with a little red (!) and a note saying Sync is currently experiencing problems, try again later.
no problems, I disabled it.
Now, on full charge I left the phone for 2 hours. Only thing on was Wifi. And, again "Dialer" is popping up under Display as being the top usage of battery?!!
I've not touched it! And the phone is back to loosing 1% every 2/4 minutes again.
Within "Dialer" in the About, battery etc I see Simtoolkit, Phone, Dialler storage as included packages.
That's all I know.
Can anyone offer a solution or idea as to what and why "dialer" is eating my battery like this?
Hello
I'm afraid that I can't explain but can say I've seen the same with Dialer before.
You did the right thing, in manually adjusting the syncing, that eats battery when phone should be idle....
I'd suggest that you read the sticky [GUIDE] Update 28/06/11: HTC Desire S Guide (V1.03) For Newcomers to Android which shold give you some pointers on battery usage.
Wasn't this that was fixed by going to Manage Applications/All and clearing data for "Contacts Storage"? I'm not 100% sure, but if you do clear the data for contacts storage you will probably need to resync any social network contacts. It won't delete your contacts though.

I have also seen this before, but not for a while now. I think it was an inherent bug with Android 2.3.3 and the Battery usage manager. Read through this thread where the DHD crowd have suffered the same issue...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1069251
Edit: just noticed you've already found it!
It appears that the reported percentage of use was invalid. If you select Dialer from the list, it'll say only a few seconds of CPU time and a few kb of data have been sent/received if things are normal. The actual percentage of use is being mis-represented by the bug.
Your battery drain (which is definitely not normal) may actually be coming from a different culprit. The Dialer could be a red herring.
I'm pretty sure since I've been on 2.3.4 I've not seen it since. Typically after the first sync and Google Contacts are all pulled down onto my phone, I turn the Contacts sync off. No need to keep syncing contacts when they rarely change. I do a manual sync if I add a contact.
Use this to track down the battery drain...

If this problem has started suddenly and you are on stock, the above should help point the finger in the right direction. As Ben has suggested give my guide a read too, and see if that helps. The first things I do after putting a new ROM on are;
1. Turn off 'Always On Mobile Data' in Mobile Networks.
2. Turn off 'Network notification' in WiFi Settings.
3. Turn off 'Best WiFi performance' in advanced WiFi settings.
4. Turn off 'Pocket Mode' in Sound settings. (A bad drain that one)
5. Turn off 'Auto screen brightness' in Display settings. (normally set to 25%)
6. Turn off 'News', 'Stocks', 'Contacts' and 'Google Reader' auto-syncing.
7. Set Weather sync to every 3 hours.
Would be interested to know what you discover. If you need further help, please ask!
Just yesterday I noticed that my battery was draining crazy quick while it was in sleep mode. I don't have any background syncing going on other than auto-update for a weather widget once an hour along with the core Google things like contacts, email, calendar, etc.
Usually the screen has been the largest contributor to draining of the battery and via betterbatterystats, there's no abnormal wakes going on.
I did a reset of the phone and I've now disabled 'Data Network Mode' as I'm primarily on Wifi right now. It seems to have fixed itself so far but I'll know better tonight.
Is this a conflict within the OS itself (rooted on Infused V2.1.0) or something from having 4G enabled when I'm in an area where I typically only get 1 bar? Either way, it's a huge draw on my battery...
From what I've heard/read this is a random bug caused by gb, not common at all but ocassionaly android os will go nuts and suck down your battery. Resolutions I've seen posted have just been power off, remove battery, re-insert battery, power up = issues reoslved.

Hmm, I would say try the battery-pull method first. If that doesn't fix it, maybe try flashing back to stock via ODIN and then re-flash Infused? Just an idea.
So I dl'd Battery Saver Dr app and when i go into running programs i see like a million apps running, some r android system apps so i leave those alone, but facebook, google maps, twitter, etc. All these are constantly running in the background. I kill the apps and they just start back up again. I go into their settings and change it so they never update...still running in the background. Google maps doesnt even have a setting to turn off the auto sync. Does anyone know how to solve this issue, I'm sure it has a lot to do with why my battery life is such crap.
On a side note; what is the deal with airplane mode going on by itself? It happens a lot after I end phone calls, but also at other random times. I have to turn it off, wait a min or two and hope my signal comes back. Is there a way to remove it from the phone completely? I really have no use for it, especially when it just goes on leaving me with no signal. I also randomly lose signal at times and airplane mode isn't even on. I know its not my area because on my old my phone I never once lost service in over 2 years. Now, I unlock my phone and at least once a day it says No Service.
Hello. I'm sure this has been asked bunch of times, but whenever I google it, I get opposite results.
So.. I want my phone not to save battery. Like.. I want my notifications to come through instantly. Now only few apps are capable of doing that (calls, messages, alarm clock). But all other apps - like gmail, skype or FB Messenger are not. I only receive notifications when I wake up my device (or when someone starts spamming me messages, after like 5th message they come through, so I guess phone is receiving those messages, just not putting them through). Whenever I google solutions for this, I only get tips on how to make it worse (because for some reason everyone just want to save their batteries) or nothing that actually worked.
What I have done so far:
Battery optimization - off for every single application (even system).
Background activity manager - looks off (there is no toggle, only the 'blacklist', which is off).
Background activity cleaner - off.
Every app has 'Urgent' notification importance.
Phone is not rooted (nor it can be.. stupid Nokia policy). Android 8.1. Nokia 5.
Battery power saver - off (obviously).
Looks like I have data saving modes turned off (I might have missed some, but I only do not get notifications while device is sleeping).
Factory reset (multiple times (for various reasons)). I never received real-time notifications on this phone while it's sleeping.
I contacted Nokia support team, but they took 30 minutes to tell me to reboot the phone, so decided not to wait another half an hour to tell me to clear apps' cache.
I saw that with ADB I could turn off doze, but as I understood, it's temporary as restarting the phone brings this 'feature' back, but I have to restart this phone every day or two due to not a huge amount of RAM (2GB) as it fills up with trash and restarting the phone brings me the best performance, so it's really not a great option. Edit: also, it didn't help
I guess it's a manufacturer specific problem then? ;s
* Often when I work the mobile is at my desk but I still comunicate by sending SMS and using Whatsapp in my webbrowser. Works fine with Samsung and Huawei but with my new Mi10 Ultra id does not work. Connection is lost and I have to tuch some key on the phone to light up the screen and then it syncronizes.
I have set permissions for the apps to allow both autostart and not affected by the battery saver in the system.
I have also set the "data usage" for the apps to allow background data.
...but still, background data for SMS and whatsapp IS deactivated until I light up the screen.
Has anyone run into this problem? Is there any general (mayor) switch for this that I have missed?
This happens to me with Gmail. Sometimes they come in on the lockscreen and sometimes I have to turn the phone on for them to appear. I still have this problem on my Samsung S20 Ultra but I learned to live with it since I never figured out what the problem was. I have no such problems with my SMS or WhatsApp though. Everything else for me seems to be coming through.

Hi there. I pretty much have the same problem with this phone. If it's not permissions nor background data, it's the power saving feature, which is the most aggressive I've seen yet.
I was talking with someone about this in another thread, but I was instructed to turn off battery saver. It got better for a day, but it kind of returned back the way it was. I think you could try and play around with the power saving settings for the apps you want immediate notifications from, which I haven't had time to do. Please let me know how it goes for you and I'll find time to play with it this weekend.
