-Read Me First-
First of all, the purpose of this thread is so that we can update the OP with details on how our progress is going. This thread will only be relevant for a short time until the official root release thread is created. We needed a place to post updates on how our progress is moving towards the actual release without sifting through 400 pages of flame-wars and other nonsense. The other root thread's OP has disappeared so we have no way to update it. Also, the OP of the other thread has not contributed to this current method, and contains info that is irrelevant to this method. Perhaps the mods will close the other thread so that development can be focused in a place where we have the ability to update the original post. When we are ready to release, a new thread will be created in the appropriate forum. Thanks for understanding.
-Contributors-
Here are the people that have contributed to the current method, make sure to thank them when you see them:

-Current Progress-
We have achieved root! We are currently very busy packaging things up to make our method easy to apply, and fixing a few quirks in order to provide a well-rounded root method with as few bugs as possible. Obviously, community development will commence when our method is released, and others will be able to contribute to get things working as smoothly as possible. Here are a couple of things to consider while you wait:
-Our method uses an engineering firmware, which includes a lot of testing and debug tools. We will leave these tools as-is. There is no inherent lag in this firmware build, it is completely stable.
-We have the engineering firmware for both the S8 and S8+. We just got the S8 firmware recently, but we expect things to work the same way they do on the S8+ firmware, which we've had for a while now.
-Samsung Knox is intact, warranties are intact. We are currently experiencing some issues with some Samsung apps, but are working to get these ironed out before release. There is a problem with the certification method that Samsung uses to verify their apps on this firmware.
-There are issues with a few apps getting root correctly. This should be fixed soon, we are closing in on the issue.
-We are currently limited to 80 percent battery capacity. This is a limitation in the kernel that we are using. We are looking for a work-around, but we may release with this limitation intact and let the community work to get it sorted out. I've been getting through the day just fine with battery left to spare, but your mileage may vary, depending on usage pattern and apps installed etc... Sometimes you just have to make a sacrifice.
-Notes-
-Please do not ask for an ETA. We will release when we think things are of acceptable quality.
-Be respectful to your fellow members in this thread. We don't want any more flame-wars, and we certainly don't want any threads to get shut down.
-How To Contribute-
-There is a bounty thread that has been posted by @elliwigy. Read the instructions, and if you feel so kind as to donate, post your pledge there. We hope that those that have pledged will follow through with their pledges. We have all spent many a restless nights working on this, not to mention the fact that money was spent acquiring the firmware used. All donations are greatly appreciated.

I saw some post that you guys said some get 80 and some get 100 percent battery? Or everyone with this method will be locked at 80?

It's a valid question for those who are following developments. Your post seems inappropriate IMO.
BTW, is there a possibility 80% max charge accurately reflects the potential maximum utilization of the true battery capacity?

its possible but highly unlikely.. it seems to drain normally, id think if it was truely 100 reflecting as 80 that itd take longer for the battery to drop but it drops at a normal rate
tberes 100s of battery related files we are sifying through

1) we have it already as well as twrp
2) their bl is unlocked, not much to do with a boot.img as the bl is separate
3) it does charge to 100% lol
4) it wont work.. been down that road already.. our bl is locked and attempting to flash chinese firm on our devices dnds in a secure check faileither in odin or when trying to boot after dd
we basically would have to disable secure download (bl unlock) and/or disable secure boot to boot unsigned firmwares

A few threads have been removed the past few hours. These are regarding a leaked radio which is known to brick devices and has been taken from a compromised server.
Reposting will not be tolerated. Distribution through PM, or even hinting that you may be available to spread it through PM or other methods, will be treated as open reposting. "Vacations" will be dealt out to those who do so.
This is both for your own good as for the good of others. Some of you are able to read between the lines - I have read it in your posts - and good for you.
Have patience, it will come.

The fact that we have an MR2 Radio means GB could be right around the corner. I have had one reboot with it, (although that might have been a fluke, as the phone had 3% battery left), and so far it is very stable, and I wouldn't be surprised to see an official build out soon.

It seems that in some alternate reality it is acceptable to assume that "in your spare time" means cancel all of your plans and get used to fluorescent lighting because daylight is just the glare on your computer screen. Either way, I am downloading some 2 gigs of random ICS stuff and finally received my replacement Macbook, so between projects I will try to get something moving on this.

I guess if you didn't see the previous thread, which was more or less a rick-roll youtube video that said it isn't possible to get anything running, then an understandable first reaction is to make rude comments...
But if you read the thread you are responding to, you would have seen that on the Nexus it is a working build, capable of being used as more than just a proof-of-concept. Then again, I don't expect people to read these days because they are too busy writing...

Best leave the developing to the developers and stop back when there is something to load up and complain about
So getting an SDK port working on a Nexus S is the same as getting it to run on the ThunderBolt?
I'm not saying it isn't possible though I highly doubt it will work. I'm saying don't call it the "Real Deal".

This is real ICS development, and not a prank so it is as the title says "ICS Development (Real Deal)"
And no, getting a port working on the Nexus S is not the same as getting it to work on the Thunderbolt, which is why there isn't a file in that first post yet. I think you are assuming that the only thing available is the SDK image, though, when the full system dump is out there also.
My previous statement still stands.. Why don't you go shake down some kids for their script source, and come back when there is something here to test.

You do know downloads, packing, transferring, uploading, etc do run in the background right? I remember back when threads like this rallied up support and assistance instead of whatever you call what you're doing... For the record I am waiting on a data wipe and a lot of stuff is still installing since the computer only came yesterday.
I can just toss up every little edit I test and brick phones all day long, or I can document the process and release when it hits milestones. That way I can catch input along the way and prevent a lot of wasted time.
Just swapped the boot on the posted Nexus build, changed over all the apn info, and added in all the keylayout and hardware files. Going through and finding everything that needs to be swapped for a straight port, then if it runs I will post up the progress.

Nothing wrong with doing something just for the challenge of having said you did it and the experience.
I am glad to see someone putting some real effort into getting an ICS port going. And appreciate you posting your progress here along the way. I'm interested in seeing how you get where you get.
Good Luck

Thanks. The good news is that I have a shopping list of what has been changed to go from sdk to working port. The bad news is that I also have a project due Thursday that I need to actually spend some time with.
For anyone with the sdk build, make sure before even trying to run it that you replace all the /system/bin files that just say toolbox with real files or set up symlinks for them. Busybox also needs to be added/replaced in /system/xbin
This will get that version to where you can run logcat and see the EGL errors, but it will also be in a condition to start tweaking files to get the touchscreen running.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
I can't waaaaiiiitttt!!
Take as much time as you need! Your life is more important than this.
I am uploading what I have, but not because it is a huge step forward. I fixed all the commands and added the files that should fix the touchscreen, but didn't on this device.
This is still a step forward from the base build we currently have. At least typing a command no longer results in "toolbox" being displayed instead of results. I reverted everything I tested to make sure the only test changes were absolutely necessary to provide a solid base. I will post a link as soon as it is up.

So, can someone link me to a simple, current guide to rooting and removing crapware? Bonus points if I can revert all changes so they can't screw me on my warranty.
I have an AT&T One X, purchased in the last week. I can post version info if necessary.
I want to ditch the yellowpages garbage and all the att garbage (wifi, navigator, cityid, etc) and probably twitter and facebook, though I don't really care if they're there. I'd also like to enable tethering if I can.
I had a ROM on my last phone (samsung infuse) which did all this, but I don't think I want to put a ROM on this one just yet. So, I'm not new to rooting, but I'm new to HTC, and new to removing/freezing bloat. I'm running linux.
Oh, and I saw the one-click root thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1644167
But I read that it makes your phone show *TAMPERED* and lock you out? That makes me terrified of running it.
Edit: Oh, and I have software number 1.85.502.3 710RD... I don't think it would work anyway.
Here are the two best places to start for this stuff:
Number 1
Number 2
Good luck!
You can disable them without voiding warranty. The only thing i couldn't disable was AT&T ready to go.

Because I obviously haven't been trying to use those. Seriously, these forums contain some of the most unapproachable instructions that exist, instructions that have the potential to brick your device, and if you ask for some advice on not getting your $600 device completely ****ed by them, you get linked to google. I help users of various open source projects all the goddamn time, and I never go HERP DERP LMGTFY.
So give real advice or just don't reply. It's not helpful or constructive, it doesn't make you cool, it doesn't even clean up the forums. If you know nothing and are posting to be a jerk, then you're just bumping my post for me. If you're deliberately withholding information and posting to be a jerk, then you're actively increasing forum clutter by keeping me around longer. Either way, the outcome is that the "signal to noise" ratio of the forum goes to **** because half the posts are "OMG GOOGLE," because this attitude is actively encouraged for some reason, when in reality it shouldn't even be tolerated.
Holy crap dude, chill the eff out. My post was completely lighthearted and I was fully prepared to help you and give you whatever help you needed. Hence the that I ended it with. Not anymore!

Answers to ALL your questions can be found in guides ON EVERY DAMN ANDROID FORUM ON THE INTERNET, including here on xda where you decided to post the same exact thread that has already been posted thrice today by other noobs asking for help without wanting to do any legwork of their own.

I've dedicated the last hour or more to searching for this ****. Once you've been into modding your phone for a while, you don't understand how difficult it is to get started.
I'm trying to go about this with caution, so I don't get screwed. I cannot afford to replace the phone if I screw up and HTC and ATT decide to throw me under the bus. Maybe the people around here who seem to own 3-5 phones at a time can.
The various roots that I found appeared to have users replying that they didn't work with the latest revisions to 1.85. So I'm still not even sure I can do that. Maybe those users were full of crap, maybe not. How am I supposed to know?
Back to the subject of the phone, it looks like CleanROM is probably my best option, but it will require unlocking the bootloader. So far I've seen instructions for rooting 1.85, but I'm unsure about unlocking.

Lets start over, ok?
To root your phone, there is a one click thread that is stickied in development that works great. I have used it 6 times now and have had no issues. It doesn't always work the first time but usually does the second. it will give you a "tampered" banner on your bootloader but that goes away if you RUU back to stock. It absolutely does work on the latest software (1.85).
Here's the thread- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709424
For removal of bloatware, use Titanium Backup. Been using it for 3 years, and I swear by it. When you select an item for deletion, back it up first just in case.
Here- https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup
Use these two things, I promise you won't get screwed. I'm sorry for yelling.

And you know what's not tolerated around here? Farking n00bs who CLAIM they exhausted searching when it is more than evident they didn't. Answers to ALL your questions can be found in guides ON EVERY DAMN ANDROID FORUM ON THE INTERNET, including here on xda where you decided to post the same exact thread that has already been posted thrice today by other noobs asking for help without wanting to do any legwork of their own.
And if you can't understand the simple "herp derp click here and watch your phone get rooted automagically for you" instructions then maybe you shouldn't be rooting. Smart phones are for smart people.
GOOD DAY.

a little pointed, but true.. i remember my first post here on xda and I was labelled as a noob for asking a question. some people are just too sensitive for these type of forums. To op, if you cannot handle the "heat" I would tell you what I was told back then: "xda is for people who want to tinker with their phone, or for those interested in learning how to do so and contribute to the community. If that's not you, go to a much more general forum like android central." Now, you can bash me like you did to that guy who was just joking, or you can take what I said for what it means and run with it. Read up, that will do wonders for you.

Hmm, thank you for the help. I still haven't been able to get that root to work. adb wait-for-device finishes, but then the adb push just sits there forever.

No and yes. I have sync installed but not running. USB debugging enabled on the phone, phone in charge-only mode.

I got it to work by switching to a different USB host.
Edit: but it said no update found, so I'm restarting and setting the clock forward.

Would have been next. Always use a port on the back of the computer for anything related to root, unlock, or flash.

Well, it's my laptop, and I have to use virtualbox to get winderz. So, it was probably something related to that.
Anyway, I swapped it from a usb2 port to a usb3 port.
Yeah on a desktop it can matter. I have yet to see an explanation of the difference between ports on the front and back, and why adb will refuse to work with some/most front ports. Just seems to be that way.
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
So I'm on my fourth or fifth try, still "no update available."
Edit: Ok, tried it 7+ times, how can I eliminate winderz? Is this exploit using a patched adb?
I know this is probably a long-shot but I've been tempted to throw a childish fit ever since I updated to 4.3. I'd killed my ROM while trying to flash CM11 and I had to go back to stock in order to put things right. Little did I know, Verizon had a sneaky trick up their sleave. I hadn't kept up to date on the news for my phone and I took the 4.3 update. I bet this sounds really familiar for many people. I'm personally willing to contribute USD50 to a community-driven bounty on the exploitation of this new lock because I'm fed up with terrible battery life and many other things. I'm personally not sure how to set this up or organize it. I'm just interested to see if there's a demand large enough for this.

Go and put that money up for the Verizon s4 unlock bounty. Chances are if they get a exploit we will be able to use it or modify it for our use. But I can tell you right now a bounty for the s3 will be a waist of time.

I hate to say it but even the s4 bounty is a waist of time because it had a exploit that got patched. But not enough people updated to that patched boot loader to really care.

I mean if you really want to know, there's over a $6000 bounty (Verizon only), I think AT&T is also over $5000 to unlock the bootloader. Trust me, anybody who's capable of doing it is either working on it already or simply can't do it. If the bootloader gets cracked on one of those devices, the method would probably trickle down to the s3. Also, people pledge money all the time but never pay up. Developers know this and don't necessarily work on the exploit simply for the money.
The developers who are trying to work on this wouldn't post relevant information anyway in a public forum. Any progress on this would be completely hidden from anybody to ensure the integrity of the exploit.

I know when the s3 came out I put up a fund me project and the money would go to Adam Outler to get our boot loader unlock and or work around. He came through but I don't think he'd revisit our phone when the issue is so small. Most of us on here are unlocked and will never take the OTA.

To be clear, Adam did not unlock the S3 bootloader. Nobody did. Adam was provided a leaked bootloader from a pre-release S3. He even said so in his bootloader unlock thread in the original dev section. Not taking anything away from Adam because I and countless others are entirely thankful for that feat.

Right, he did package together CASUAL which is still being used right now I think? Which at the time was a great tool because it was cross-platform. Someone on here donated all $600 to adam which I thought was cool.

hahaha great minds think alike :good::good:
Well, from the looks of it I'm going to have to either buy a new phone or sit tight. The only reason I'm hesitant in changing phones is because the S3 has a much larger apreture than any other phone I've seen xD However, I'd love to find something to help my battery life. Maybe it's time to look at XPosed. Thanks everybody.

This was the only reason I had to refund my poco.
If this gets confirmed I'll be more than glad to get it once again.
What do you guys think?
Seems like the real deal to me.

One word sums up my feelings about this perfectly.
I really hope this will be the real deal so I can get it back ASAP.
It's literally the only device that covers all my needs, any other device I'd get I'd have to compromise on something.
I have read the post, I understand why he can't share out the fix. Because he has no right to do that. Some jerks there are trying to provoke him and xiaomi for not share out.

Well I wouldn't share it either.
This would break their trust and besides that it may have side effects in the long term we are not aware of, they may need to finalize the firmware before rolling it out.

Agree, people provide a secret firmware fix as a trust to you, just don't break the trust. Some 'Clever' people are simply ridiculous.
Some said he will share straight away once he confirms it is fixed.
some ask the OP to upload the fix at some other link so people can share the fix..
Omg, they are so 'clever'.

Heh, I like the way you put it.
Seriously, they need to get a life.
I saw there is one large jerk who has sold his poco f1 because of the touch issue and change to Nokia 7 plus.
Now that this post is out, he is now spamming and spreading virus in there.
He must be so sad that the fix is out but he can't do anything because he has sold it already.
I will pray for him.........to get Tombstone Piledriver by The Undertaker and Attitude Adjustment by Joooohhhnnnnnn Ceeeeeeeeeennnnaaaaaaa!!!!!

Look I was unoptimistic as well, but this has been fixed before with this exact same method on another device I owned myself, so it can be fixed.
The thing is Xiaomi hasn't ever provided feedback on this issue, that's why everyone, me included, thought this wouldn't get fixed.
Now that we have video evidence I'm confident this will be resolved as well.
P. S. if you're baiting, it's a hell of a bad one fyi.
nobody noticed that in the video , his ping ms was over 1000 in the beginning ?

LOL MAN.
What the hell does ping have to do with screen input latency?
The measuring is done with the android developer option: "Show pointer location." not with PUBG.
Ping has nothing to do with that.
If you had some basic technology knowledge you would know these are different things and wouldn't have posted what you posted.

No answers from Xiaomi and they remove info about bug in official post, I can't show u link to post on forum because I'm new at this forum.

I hear you.
Well since a dev managed to find a fix I'd think this would be included in the next beta or two, and most likely in the next stable as well.
(if no side effects are found that is)
I understand your frustration, but don't tell me about it, since this annoyed me so much that I refunded my phone just for this, and use a redmi note 3, my backup phone, for the time being.

It seems your inteligence reaches the level of a pineapple.
Not gonna bother explaining what kind of lag is the one you refering vs the real issue this device has.
You either understand or not.
Also google is your friend, use it.
And yes of course I saw the video, if it wasn't clear to me this was a real fic I wouldn't have made the thread, I have enough experience with electronics to understand, that's what I studied and got a degree in as well.

Enjoy.
Ugh, I'm sick of them talking and throwing empty promises at us, just implement the fix and be done with it already... Anyway, the guy who received the fix said it didn't work with the latest Pie beta so they will have to rework it for new updates if they really plan on releasing it at all.
