Hi guys,
i'm having an issue with my HTC u11, basically when i'm using the phone randomly the swipe down screen (when you swipe the screen down from top to bottom to get the notifications) comes down.
For example if while i am writing a message then drop down screen will come down when i'm typing, i then have to swipe up and continue and again.
it happens more or less all the time and is quite annoying.
any ideas?
its okay, issue resolved. NOVA Setting had gesture switched on. Swipe down for notification menu, this was the issue. lol
PLease close the thread.
Thanks

Well i had the same issue. Was driving me mad! Thanks for the info.
I don't use nova and I have been experiencing this same problem so now what?
Sent from my SM-G955U using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Yeah i though the Nova setting had solved it but it seems to be back again for me, although not as frequent.
I also experience the keyboard collapsing randomly too. Anyone get that?
Hi guys, thought nova got rid bit guess not. I still get the issue. Would this be a software issue or do I have a fault with my hardware?
Any tests I can do?
I reported my issues to HTC and they replied with the following :
To test the function of the touch screen please follow the below steps
1- Dial *#*#3424#*#* > the press accept.
2- From the options, mark Line drawing test > then press run.
3- Then start drawing on the screen to check if there are parts that do not respond
The screen does not have any dead or unresponsive spots tho and the test passes without any issues.
Does anyone experience the keyboard collapses also?
I might do a full reset soon to see if that helps any. If not i will be getting back in touch with HTC.
Did all this as well, and all the tests that I've ran pass just fine. I've also done a hard reset and it didn't make any difference. I do notice that after a soft reset that it takes a while for it to happen again. It's annoying as hell so I will be monitoring this thread. Whatever you find out from htc please update this thread so we can figure out what the hell is going on.

I also done the test and it was a pass.
I'm certain it's something to do with the software of htc. The UI has to have something wrong with it. Mind you it hasn't done it to me today yet and I'm nearly at the end of the day.
Has everyone got a case? Can't be case interference?

I turned off edge sense, I removed my screen protector and removed the case. It still does it when it's ready.

Exactly same issue here. Very very annoying. As a HTC fanboy I'm quite dissapointed. Phone less than 2 months old. I actually spoke to HTC today, they said they would have to book it in for a repair... Takes up-to 10 business days... I said this is not acceptable! Waiting for a email back.
I have emailed HTC back advising them that others are reporting the issue so unlikely that it's a single handset issue.
Awaiting their reply. No doubt it will be along the same lines that @dobknobby got and have to go through the 10 day repair process.
Will update when I get a reply.
I have had the same problem, and I have done the a lot of the same steps;
I tried several different screen protectors, thinking that was causing the issue. I have had no screen protector on for the last week, and yep it still happens.
Shut off edge sense, still happened.
Tested the touch screen, and everything passed.
Last night I noticed that it seemed to be related to the pressure I was putting on the screen, if I pressed down harder on the screen and slide my finger left or right or up the notification bar would come down. Did some more testing and for awhile I was able to reproduce it about 50% of the time. I rebooted the phone into safe mode (hold power button down and then press and hold the power off option for about 5 seconds it will ask if you want to reboot into safe mode). In Safe mode I could not reproduce it, Safe mode disables ALL third party apps.
WARNING: when I rebooted my phone to go back to "normal" all of my widgets and groupings were not on the screens, had to re add them.
After doing all this testing last night, I have not seen the notification come down, but like someone said it seems to get worse the longer the phone is running before reboot.
I was going to do a hard reset, today but that sounds like that may not help.
Not sure if this is software, but with the testing I did last night it seem to work fine in safe mode. However I have wondered if it is something with the screen, like is flexing enough for the sensors at the top to react to the pressure/flex.
Well keep testing and report back.
I'm also having some issues with the touch screen, but it mainly happens with the keyboard. I like to swipe to type, but lately I've noticed that it gets really jumpy, causing thing errors.
At first i thought it was touchpal so i installed Gboard. Problem still occurs.
I also removed my screen protector and tried did the touchscreen test.

I ran the line drawing test a bunch of times and yes, i now do see that mine fails to draw a continuous line on occasion. It only happens in the keyboard (squeezable?) area though.
I'm worried now that edge sense is damaging the touchscreen.
OK, i have ordered HTC u11 this morning from amazon, but i guess i will cancel my order. Had many problems with htc phones in the past. Saw many reviews and thought that this one is perfect with no flaws... Ahh..... Already ordered some accessories for my new device... It's really a shame to read this kind of threads. Hope you guys will find a solution and hope that this won't be a hardware issue.

Does your keyboard collapse when you are typing? That happens with me. Really frustrating when you are typing quite fast then the keyboard just disappears. Then you end up tapping a link or something that was behind the keyboard. You then need to go back to the page you were on and start typing all over again.
Are you running app killers? Stop boost+ auto. Apps updating from gplay can cause you to be kicked out of the keyboard, it can also pause/stop YouTube vids.
The edge sense system is 2 sensors stuck to the inside of the edge of the device, along the aluminium strips, they shouldn't interfere with the screen at any time.
Sweaty hands and greasy screen can cause the screen to misread your touches and gestures.
Running low on internal memory (sdcard) can cause all sorts of issues. Make sure you ALWAYS have a couple of Gb free.
Try to replicate the problem in test mode.

Same here, only I was told 7 to 15 business days. Offered to give c card to have a replacement shipped, but that is no longer an option with HTC.
So when I washed my M9, I was without a device for 2 days, but now that their phone is crap, it's going to be 3-4 weeks.
Unhappy....

I just wanted to share this, since I was able to replicate this issue with three different phones, also asking if other people are having the same issue.
I am using my Samsung Nexus S for three days.
I noticed that the back button (the first capacitive button on the bottom left) appears to have an hardware problem.
Basically normally it works fine, I mean when I'm not using the phone for some hours.
Then if I start to use the phone, after a moderate use (example installing applications from the market, browsing etc) the button gets less and less sensitive.
After some minutes it gets really annoying.
To make it work it is necessary to use a really stronger pressure with the finger, and it is not even always working!
I am planning to return my device, but today talking with some people/colleagues I discovered that two of them have exactly the same problem.
I'm suspecting there is a batch of Nexus S phones with this glitch, I am curious to know how many people have the same problem.
Note:
At first I thought it was a general issue of the capacitive buttons. But I can't replicate the same problem with the other three buttons, they work very smoothly just lighltly skimming the finger over them, even after long usage.
Anyone with the same problem? What is your experience with this button after some usage?
Cheers
I want to say that I noticed something similar the other day, but it was short-lived, and I'm not 100% sure. It wasn't long enough or bad enough to make me think the phone is defective, but I'm a bit used to funky capacitive button responses from my N1 days.
I can't reproduce the issue right now, though. How much usage are you talking about needing to duplicate?
Does your phone get hot, or feel hotter than normal when this happens?
I'd see if there's some particular pattern or software that seems to trigger it if you're interested in trouble-shooting.
The problem goes away when I don't touch the phone for a while (it seems that 1 hour is enough to reset the problem).
It seems "recharging".
Then with normal usage, nothing in particular, just even browsing in the settings/maps/market/browser etc., in few minutes the problem appears. The button definitely loses his "power".
It's very annoying, and my friends confirmed the same behavior.
EDIT:
Forgot to sat that the phone is not getting hotter, everything else is really normal.
Cheers
Mine definitely can be used for much more than a few minutes without the problem you're describing appearing.
I'd take it back. Factory reset the phone to protect your private data before taking it back. After the factory reset, you might want to test the behavior again, if it went away, the phone's not defective, you just had some software glitch.
Reminder, factory reset erases everything on the phone, so if you do it as troubleshooting step, be prepared to have to set the phone up from scratch again...I'm sure you knew this, but just covering my butt in case you didn't. It's a good trouble shooting step no matter what if you don't mind the hassle of re-setting things up.
I have a similar experience with the back button. Not sure what to think yet.

I had a similar problem when I had the Vibrant. Just exchanged it and luckily I got a better one without any problems. I did find out though if you are using the screen protector that came with the phone, it can cause this type of problem.
No problem, I will try everything tomorrow. This is not my primary phone (still loving my rooted Nexus One with CyanogenMod 6.1.1 ;-) I can't renounce to the colored trackball for the different notifications), but just a "dev" phone for testing purposes.

Anyway, today I factory-reset my telephone and the problem of the back button is still there. I am returning the device.
Back button non responsive
Hi,
I just got my new nexus S (about an hour ago) that I was really excited about and am faced with a problem with the back button too.
Its got factory settings, so it cannot be a downloaded software issue. Also, I have not yet charged the battery at all, its still running on the same battery power that it shipped with.
The other buttons at the bottom of the phone (home, menu and search) all respond fine, its only the back button that does not seem to work. After going through this thread, I tried long-pressing the button, hard-pressing it, pressing just above it, below it, etc. It just wont respond. I had removed the screen protector it shipped with, so that cannot be the issue either.
If this is a known hardware problem (i.e. others have faced it too), irrespective of whether it is acknowledged by Samsung / Google, I'll return the handset. I do not want to spend a fortune and be landed with a handset that does not work - forget working as desired, but it does not seem to be working as designed !
Thanks & Regards,
Rohan
Yep. Definitely a problem here with the back button. There's also two other threads here about it.
I'm having similar problems. I have to touch the button just right for it to work properly

I was experiencing the same thing with my Nexus S, wasn't sure if it was the case I was using! Took of case and still had problem. I eventually returned mine cause it seemed like it was getting worse! I have a new one worth no problems, definitely a hardware problem! Return it!

those buttons work over the heat of your finger. thats why after use it doesnt get as responsive. its because the screen is also heated and the heat of the screen is effecting the buttons. thats why you need harder pressure for the phone to understand this is your finger.
same issue was with Nexus 1. less responsive buttons. thats why there is a bigger gap between the buttons and the screen for galaxy S phones. i dont know why they did such a thing again with the nexus S. its like samsung didnt learn from anything from HTCs mistake.
They work with capacitance, not heat. Hence it being called a capacitive screen with capacitive buttons.
I think this is true ...
I have an HTC Desire with AMOLED screen.
When I play a finger intensive game, like "SkyForce Reloaded", after some times, the touch is not registered.
Then I must stop for a while, or change finger
Try that, you will know what I meant.
But, I don't have issue with the back button on HTC Desire because it is a hardware button. I am just trying to explain about loosing touch registration because finger interaction on (s)amoled screen.
PS: SkyForce Reloaded is an old school shot'em up game where you control a little space ship with your finger, shooting enemies.

lol, isnt called like that because it registers the heat from your fingers. thats why if you try to use a pen, it wont register . and thus. the screen is NOT resistive type "where it will recognize anything since its being pushed by force ? "

from your link
"A capacitive touchscreen panel is one which consists of an insulator such as glass, coated with a transparent conductor such as indium tin oxide (ITO).[7][8] As the human body is also a conductor, touching the surface of the screen results in a distortion of the screen's electrostatic field, measurable as a change in capacitance. Different technologies may be used to determine the location of the touch. The location is then sent to the controller for processing.
Issues with touchscreen being unresponsive.
Important Isuue usually appears at least after a week of owning the device
Quick test:
Lock device. Unlock, launch camera app in the lockscreen, take picture, try pressing back button, see if it responds straight away or with a delay. Test it with all apps on lockscreen.
Issue unlocking ? I.e dragging circle to the middle?
Bottom of a screen not responsive sometimes.
Back button slow to respond.
Apps launching when you try to change screen, i.e. phone registers swipe as a press.

CAUSE Grounding pin not touching back cover, which causes (by the looks of it) build up of static which messes up touch screen.
FIX Best to use in conjunction with fixes below.
POSSIBLE FIXes if above doesn't work, which it should, but don't expect immidiate results.
1.Shut down phone and pull battery out for at least an hour (i recommend overnight). Press power button as to turn phone on, which in theory should discharge all the left over current in the hardware.
Give it a go and let me know if it works.
2.Letting battery discharge till phone turns off,put on charge and don't touch it till it's full.
I want to thank abrown0809, eliteone, stuart0001(legendary patience ), zmfl, maschenazi, nugzo and all other people i forgot to mention for sticking with me while trying to work out FIX. Thanks to all the posters too.
I take NO credit for the fix.
Poll is here to show how many people have this problem to HTC, not to work out what percentage of users have it, as it will definitely be incorrect.
Vote yes if you EVER experienced touchscreen problems, even if its gone now.
PETITION for HTC to admit that there is touch screen problem.

Only real bug is that non HTC widgets sometimes get flickering rainbow coloured stripes but they are strictly attached to the widget and vanish once I replace the it. So this should not be a display problem especially as the HTC widgets are never afflicted.

all of the above in terms of problems. unlocking problem, bottom of the touchscreen not being responsive, swipes registered as taps fairly frequently, issues with wifi cycling and never connecting, and it has ruined the SD card it came with (do the point that it gets detected by my win7 computer but crashes explorer, and on my mac it just isn't detected) as well as the 16GB microsd I foolishly swapped in from my DSLR.
Did I mention that I still am absolutely in love with the phone?
Hmmm, still a bit random.... We just need to find a common factor. If anyone spots anything in common, just mention it, even if you are not sure.
I appreciate this thread. I am still considering purchasing this phone but the two major hold backs are the wifi signal deathgrip issue and of course the touch screen. I kinda went through this debacle with the mt4g and don't really want to go through the hassle again of finding a working model.

Did those with or without problems use a screen protector?
I left the stock screen protector on my unit and it works beautifully. Maybe because the touch screen unit is slightly displaced, static build up on the gorilla glass causes issues with some unit?
HT15RT works perfectly
A few weeks after I got my Pixel I started experiencing random screen locks while I'm holding and using the phone.
I have it set to Auto lock after 1 minute of activity but this can happen sometimes immediately after unlocking with the finger print scanner. Ive only noticed it happening while on my hour train commute but that could just be because that's where I'm using it the most consistently.
I talked to Google support via chat and they suggested booting into safe mode to see if it's a third party app causing the issue. Ive currently been using safe mode for an hour and it has happened but only once when it first rebooted.
Has anyone else experienced this? I've contacted Google support again and will update if they find anything.
Thanks
I have experienced this several times. I can't pinpoint what's causing it. I'm just glad someone else is seeing this happen as well. Hopefully someone gets to the bottom of it.
I use an app "Always On" which has a "timeout" feature.
The app uses AMOLED ambient display to put a clock and notifications on the screen.
I use it when going to bed or at night. The timeout feature uses Device Administrator access and causes the screen to go fully off after a while. Sometimes the app causes the Devices Administrator requires password "error," definitely.
I will test more and report, but earlier in week I noticed screen go off as you describe, as I've noticed now and again too, and I realized it was maybe exactly 3 hours since I freshly set a 3 hr timeout in Always On. At that point I was using my phone when the device locked.
Hmm.

OMG you just blew my mind. This is definitely what it is. When I'm sitting on the train I have my satchel on my lap which has magnetic clasps. I'll remember to keep it away from there in future. THANK YOU SO MUCH! :good:
I know this is an old thready but this blew my mind too! I think my juul is causing it, as it has a magnet on the end to snap to the charger. Never would've put two and two together. Thank you!
P4xl - Same random screen locking symptoms, NOT MAGNET related.
All of the responses in this describe the symptoms of the problem I have with my Pixel4xl, but not the description of the cause.
I most DEFINITELY do not have any magnets within any proximity to my phone.
It only has an Otterbox case, and will often lock when being actively used, while behind held at least 6" from any other object (except my hands).
Is anyone else experiencing this (non-magnet related issue)?

Yes I have the same issue where the phone locks itself randomly on 4XL. No idea what's going on I have a fabric case... Very annoying it happens all the time
I also have the same issue on the Pixel 4. No case, I'm sitting on my couch, no magnet within 6 feet, no electronics other than a remote control, yet my phone just sometimes locks.
Yes I'm facing this issue on my Pixel 2 as well, and no magnets near me!! Can someone Please help?

It's happening to me too on my pixel 4 xl. Did anyone determine a cause?
Same issue, no case on it or any magnet nearby. It's super annoying.
I had the same issue on my Pixel XL. Didn't think twice about it since it was an older phone, probably a bug with new os/old phone. But i just upgraded to the Pixel 4a and the same thing is happening! Is it related to smart unlock? The weather? Mars in retrograde?

Definitely not the cause for me.
In my Otterbox case, when pressed, the volume buttons cause the volume interface to appear (which isn't happening),
and the power button has a distinct click when pressed (and when held, activates the nfc card payment interface).
A good guess, but unfortunately isn't the cause, in my situation. ??
Has an had any issues with screen calibration? Sometimes when I click on the screen it presses to the left of it. When I'm in the recents screen for my apps, it sometimes swipes away instead of selecting it, and I'm unable to consistently unlock the phone while it is charging. (Works like once in every 5 times) however, I'm on sure if that one is related.
Anyone have any ideas?

I do hope so as well then. I do have to say that the factory installed screen protector doesn't do this screen justice.

I thought it was for protecting it in the box?
Mine had a lot of air bubbles in it so removed it right away.
My charger still has the plastic on it though xD

Lol, no, this phone comes with a screen protector pre installed .
The touch sensitity is definitely off a little. I have to swipe the notification bar sometimes twice for it to come down. I also get some missed taps but it's infrequent enough that it isn't a problem for me. I heard they started fixing touch latency and optimization in 5.1. Don't know if we will ever see it.
If you are not using the stock charger weird things can happen.
Alrighty update: Factory settings still yields the same results. It's not frequent enough to make me go crazy, but it's still roughly the same. I guess my real pet peeve is when I need to go to the app manager to return to an open app and it just closes out. I've lost a lot of information that way like recipes when cooking and etc.
What I really don't understand is the fingerprint sensor not working while it's charging. It doesn't matter what charger I use. It just doesn't respond most of the time (Sometimes it unlocks like it's suppose to)
Im using Quick Charger from SS and I have this problem too. It's nice to know this is a common issue, not only me. I dont have any issues with fingerprint when charging, just notice when the battery between 5-60% it's insensitive for me (maybe quick charge is working strongly in this range), "insensitive" here means when you press and hold any things on the screen, it'll "tap" it and open it instead, all pressing or sliding or zooming actions are normal, just dragging has issue. When the battery is 70% and above, it becomes normal and no more insensitive touch. Just that so I think I can bear this thing.
My U11 is having problems recognizing touches. The digitizer itself is fine when I check with testing apps or the developer options. However in normal everyday use, I find myself having to repeat actions quite often, maybe once every 20 touches. It's not really consistent... sometimes it's like the phone expects you to be REALLY precise when tapping a button or text label. In other cases light touches are not recognized until I try a 2nd time. And sometimes I try to open the navigation drawer by swiping from the left edge of the screen and again I have to try a second time.
The phone works perfect if I am really careful when using the screen, but in my previous HTC phones (M8, 10) using the screen was completely effortless so this is a bit odd.
Anyone experiencing something similar?
I've noticed the same thing. thought it was me. I get it sometimes moving icons around and other times. I'll keep track of when and how and report.
I may be able to test with a 2nd unit in a few days, I'll see if I get the same issues.
It does feel like a software calibration issue rather than a hardware one though. I have the "show taps" option enabled in dev tools now and the taps are definitely being registered, it's just that the actions are sometimes not triggered.
Same here. Sometimes have to tap 2 or 3 times.

I have the same problem; most prominent when my hands are too dry, and worst at navigation buttons under the screen. Maybe use the glove mode?
Just updating the thread to say that the phone is now working a lot better. I still get the odd tap that is not recognized but it's not nearly as common as it used to be, the phone is perfectly usable most of the time now.
Not sure what changed, I came from a M8 so maybe it was just a matter of getting used to the new size of the device (the way you type does change quite a bit with these larger screens), or maybe there were improvements in the software, I went from 1.03 to 1.13 a few days ago.
Same issue on 2 household U11
I just got the phone about 2 hours ago. I agree sometimes touches don't register. Very annoying.

Same here as well, thought I was losing my mind. Also I can be typing something and it will trigger the pull down notification tray up top, weird. But it's very inconsistent. I don't recall seeing this before the latest update.

Same for me, hopefully some update will fix it.
I don't think an update will fix this. The issue was so bad I asked for a replacement. Unfortunately, it will take over week to get a replacement. HTC Customer Service takes forever to respond, then shipping phone back, and then getting replacement.

Well I don't think a replacement will fix it either then.
My second unit has the same problem so I would say replacement is not a solution. I hope they can fix it by some SW update.
Same problem here. I just did a factory reset last night to fix a different issue though so I'll see if it's still happening.
Have also touch issues and will now repair this from HTC.

I was going to hard reset this morning as well but didn't feel like setting everything back up so I will deal with it for now. But if it fixes the problem then I will for sure. So let us know how it goes for you.

Any improvements since the hard reset?

Maybe a little bit. Seems to be less frequent now but I still notice it every once in a while. Really weird/annoying.

Are you using a screen protector?
