Can't play videos at qualities above 720p in Youtube - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I just got this phone, there is no option to play videos at 1080p or 1440 for most of the videos. Help?

In screen options, did you set max resolution?

Yeah, it's WQHD+

Yea, it looks like a recent update caused this. I used to be able to play above 720p 60fps, but not any more. I've seen others post about this too on other forums in the last few days, so it's not just you.

Thank you. I should have checked.

Edited.
I'm on a custom rom, that's why I don't have this problem

Watching one at 1080p now on mobile data on a stock rom without issue. I had to find a video with that resolution available though. The videos are limited by whatever resolution they were uploaded at.

[Q] youtube quality

Is it me or does youtube quality sux with the tab? I even made the default play at hq ans it still sux. Is there another setting that I'm missing?
Have you downloaded the latest youtube app?
Over wifi and 3g, or both?
I use Youtube Mate and the quality is fairly good over wifi, if over 3G it sucks yeah, unless if I download the video in hight quality format.

i only use wifi (don't have a 3g plan). i've seen similar threads on this but some people say their youtube hd is great.
im have'n this same issue... over wifi aswell... youtube on my evo looks way better
I am having issues on youtube as well.. But not the app.
When I play youtube using either the browser or dolphin hd,
They both play fine but if I press the full screen on the flash video that is
Playing, it would play in full screen but very stuttery. When I do the same on my evo
4g, it plays the full screen video from the browser just fine. No stuttery.
Both connected to wifi btw.
Any ideas?
it looks better on the evo because the screen on the tab is much higher resolution

but is the stuttering videos on my tab caused by resolution difference as well?
I think the stuttering is more an issue of adobe's flash being resource hungry than anything. I see similar behavior when playing flash video on most netbooks/nettops, some older desktops and even some modern low spec laptops. Adobe flash is just horribly inefficient with resources.
Hopefully with gingerbread there will be more options.
Are you able to try playing it in the browser instead of via the youtube app?
i seems to get better video quality when i go to mobile web site. instead of using the app

Yes i had smooth 720p playback from the youtube mobile site until now as well. But suddenly it opens up the video player instead and now the quality is horrid. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?
Edit: it is still working in the stock browser and xscope, just not in miren.
seriously!
Are you guys totally blind?!...Or hired by samsung/google to cover up this flaw?
Yes, I'm talking to the people that actually can't see the problem.
We are missing out bigtime on video quality as long as this doesn't get sorted. And no living soul wants to be forced over to the stock browser for anything.
Follow 3-step procedure to get enlightened:
1. Go to youtube.com with the stock browser(yes, the stock browser sucks, but it illustrates the problem). You will be directed to a mobile youtube site, search for "720p" or something and find a nice hd video, now play it and watch it for a little while. You will see that it looks great! And it shows that the tab has some nice potential.
2. Open your youtube app(old or new version, problem affects both). Find the exact same video and start playing. Even make sure that you have the high quality setting on.
3. Compare!
Now you should come to this conclusion: stock browser actually wins and youtube app loses
If you can't see the difference you really really need to get glasses. Watching youtube using the stock browser is crispy clear, and the youtube app makes the screen look frosted in comparison.
My theory:
The youtube app is not made for such a high resolution screen just yet. While the stock browser is.It totally sucks and should be fixed asap!
It really truly looks 100% identical to me. Watched Star Trek 720p trailer from stock browser and youtube app. Look the same. Tmobile.

Are you 100% sure? Because it's a major difference on my tab. And I've tried countless videos. I can spot the difference from 2 meters away even
And yes, I'm on a wifi connection (don't really know if 3G is worse)
Unbranded euro tab running JJ3 by the way

Before reading your thread I did the same experiment
Extremely disappointing... One more reason for me to be disappointed by the Tab...
Hopefully gingerbread will solve this
No offence intended to anyone, but if you cant notice the difference its because you dont have attention to detail, or an eye for quality, i cant stand watching stuff in the youtube app, it looks perfect in portrait mode with high quality, problem is its strecthing that resolution across landscape, if someone can some how edit the resolution of the video its downloading that could fix the problem, easier said that done i suppose
I just use jet video, download it and watch it in 720 :/

HD Youtube uploads

Anyone have success uploading a 1080p clip to Youtube? I tried with one last night recorded at 1080p and it posted up as 480p and still is this morning so it's not a processing issue. I couldn't find a setting in the Youtube app. Anyone know what is up with that?
have you tried to change the resolution while watching the video? link?
Yes, no go. Stuck at 480.
http://youtu.be/2OY_J1A6uqo
yep only shows 480p for me. are you uploading through the youtube app or through the gallery?
Gallery via wifi
Nevermind, the vids were actually at qHD res on the phone. I swore I changed it to full HD, but I guess not.
Sorry.
lmao! my girlfriend has the mytouch4g & i found out it had 720p recording. asked her if she knew. she always thought she had it switched on too.
I'm glad you got it figured out

[Q] 1080p mkv file

How can i watch mkv file in 1080p?
***The last time they asked was in may sooo....***
1. play the file on a recent computer.
2. buy the transformer prime when it comes out
tf101 can't handle 1080p as far as i understand.
Or convert the video to a 1080p lower profile - then it can handle it.

The display is 1280*800 so 1080p is pointless, however ... give BSPlayer a try as it handles 720p fine for me.

How come I did not find this player earlier? I tried several other media players that claimed to use hardware acceleration, but neither of them played even 480p mkvs smoothly. Thanks a lot, now I can finally watch my favorite anime shows without the need to reencode them.

It just means that the display hasnt got the 1080pixels the video is offering, if its playing a 1080p movie it downscales it to 720 then pumps out an upscale to 1080 ... kinda pointless

I have no doubt BSP works just fine and maybe i'll give it a try.
But i hate those "shiny" UIs
well, maybe install ubuntu in it, and use the player inside may work lol

youtube removed 4k video on G3

Yesterday's Youtube update removed 4k video capability on the G3. Dont understand why they have added the capability few weeks back and now removed it. To get 4k, you have to remove the most recent update and get version 4.9.
People were probably moaning about load times.
Did it ever have 4k? 1440p was the only option I ever saw and it's still there. 4k is 2160p.

My bad, it's 2k, 1440p. You are saying after updating you still see 1440p? I read the review and noticed a lot of people with G3 complaint about the missing 2k option. I did not see 1440p as an option after updating the app.
I'm still seeing the 1440p option on mine. Using latest youtube version 5.10.1.5.

1440P Shows on my YouTube as well on Latest YouTube No issues here!
Okay, correction, my YouTube app just now requested the new update to 5.10.3.5 and it did indeed remove the 1440p option on videos. 1080p or lower only now. Why they did it? I'm not sure.
I had to force it to update to the latest version, but it does indeed remove 1440p, even though I could never play it anyways at home (check with isp availability before moving!)

Version 5.10.1.5 has 1440 option
I can't get mine to play 1440p or 4x. I have 100MB connection and everything. I can see it load I get sound but the video just hangs. But if its downloaded to the phone no prob not idea why...
Just watched a Lumix 4k Test Video with settings only allowing 1440 with Youtube Version 5.10.1.5.
Works fine for me!

WTF indeed! You need to go back to 5.10.1.5.
I think it was a placebo anyways. If you had your video on 1080p and turned it to 1440p, it started immediately like that and I didn't see any change in quality.

This is similar to people claiming no difference between 720p and 1080p. But the difference is there.
Definitely not placebo effect. Just pull up one of those 1440p videos that are on the phone and compare to any 1080p video.
---------- Post added at 05:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:51 PM ----------
I reverted back to 5.10.1.5 and used TB to stop the auto update for youtube.
I'm on 5.10.1.5 and 1140p will play for a bit then it will stop but audio will continue to play. Also some 1080p videos work some don't. I'm able to play 1080p just fine on my computer so it isn't my internet.
I hate the new update ....

Cant figure out how to do video recording in 16:9

I just recorded a tutorial the other day of me ceramic coating my wifes car. I finished the tutorial uploaded it to the PC and then noticed all the images were turned sideways. I then went to rotate them which isnt a problem except now the formatting looks terrible for youtube or any other way you would watch a video. Am I doing something wrong? Does the OnePlus7 Pro not record in the Video Standard 16:9? Is there a setting I can use to enable that?
Thanks in advance
Anyone have any thoughts? Am I doing something wrong?
After trying multiple things I still cant get it situated properly
Yes op7 pro records 16:9
The OP7 Pro only records video at 16:9 as far as I can tell. In the app you only have 16:9 as choices. (ie 1080p, 1080p 60fps, 4k(2160p), 4k(2160p) 60fps)

I will do more testing but every time I have recorded video and tossed it on the pc it wants to distort it and spin it around. Do weird things. I'll do some more testing. Thanks everyone
