Is this water damage on the screen or the logic board? - General Questions and Answers

Hello everyone!
It has been a while since I last tinkerd with some phones but now I am here again.
I got my hands on an old water damaged Alcatel Idol 2, it didn't turn on and it didn't charge and nothing...
Took it apart and saw that some of the connectors were a bit coroded so I cleaned them with a toothbrush and would you look at that, it started charging.
After I charged it for a couple of hours I tried turning it on and BAM! It works! Sorta...
See here is my problem. The phone works, the touch screen works, but the picture is all wierd, with horizontal and vertical lines and verry bright and not at all what it should be.
My question to all you pros out there is this:
Would changing the screen assembly fix this?
Or is this a problem on the logic board?
I have added a video on youtube, I hope you can see what I mean. I have never seen something like this and that is why I am wondering if I should bother changing the screen or has the board gone bye bye.
As I said the phone was water damaged a while ago and not imediatley repaired correctly.
Any help would be appreciated.

[Q] Blue Screen???

Hi to all. New here but have a lots of problems with my sensation. Bought sensation 1 month ago (second hand). Since i got it, it was bit slow and lugish on stock ics so i unlocked bootloader and instaled hd revolution rom. Things got bit better but screen sudenly got predominantely green color. It worked like that for a day than returned to normal. It was all fine until yesterday. Screen got this time predominantely red colour and later changed to pink and finaly stuck on blueish. It look completely unnatural. Cant watch videos or pictures on it, or do anything. Could be that signs of duying screen or digitizer perhaps?? Dont know what to do, for sure this is my last htc.
Thanks

It certainly sounds like hardware failure. The last time I saw behavior like that on an LCD screen it was because the ribbon connector that connected the screen to the motherboard was loose and shifting a little in the connector. That was on a completely different peice of hardware, but the result was similar to what you are describing.
Thanks

Cracks are not always visible. But if they're not there, I'd suggest you open the back case and try to reseat the ribbon cables at the touchscreen PCB. While at it, check the flat silver cable connecting that board to the mainboard also. Make sure nothing is jarred loose by the drop.

thanx for responding...i did exactly what you said ..i disconnected both cables (silver and brown) and put them back..more than half of the screen started working, the other part was just dead and those parts didnt work even when i tilted the screen.. like 5 minutes later the entire screen is dead again......do you think its the digitizer?

Sorry for the late reply. I've run into this problem before. When you have a digitizer that works for a few minutes then stops as the tab warms up, (1) more likely than not, there's a crack somewhere or a tear on the ribbons, visible or not, or (2) the new screen boycotting the old firmware. No new screen points to faulty hardware. However, it doesn't hurt to eliminate possible software causes.
The best test I can think of at this point would be to first check the physical connections again (check the connectors and ribbon ends under a magnifying glass, make sure they aren't damaged, bent or stripped), then re-flash the firmware following instructions in another thread, then turn on "show touches" in settings. If you still see "ghost touches" after a few minutes, the digitizer is likely ass-kicked by the drop.
I've had a digitizer on a TF act "leisurely" because of a crack across the width of the bordering black strip that couldn't be detected with the naked eye because it severed the circuit on just the underside. The surface was totally smooth. As the crack spread, it became obvious.
If I had access to your glass, I could've tested for you. Too bad.

[Q] Water Damaged LG G2 Works But Won't Show Image On Screen

So like the title suggests, I have a water damaged LG G2 that won't fully work. A little back-story, I went swimming one day at the pool and while I was swimming I totally forgot my phone was still in my pocket. I was only in the water for a few minutes and realized my mistake so I quickly drove home and disassembled it. I immediately soaked it in rice for a few days but unfortunately its fried so I decided to do some tests to see if i could fix it myself. I played with it for a while, scrubbed off the corrosion, replaced the battery and the phone works now but the screen wont display an image. I put in another replacement screen but to no avail so I'm assuming it has something to do with the logic board although I'm not for sure. If anyone could shed some light on what might be the problem or help me with a solution it would be greatly appreciated :good:
thanks

Well, you seem to have already done the things I would have suggested. If you've already dropped in a replacement glass/digitizer/LCD assembly and it still isn't working, then I got nothing. I'd send it in to someone to have it fixed or get a new phone. That said, I was actually replacing that assembly myself this weekend after being dumb/inebriated and having my phone fall out of my pocket, cracking the glass and digitizer. One thing I noticed that I didn't expect is that even if everything is completely assembled, if you take off the back cover and turn the phone on, the phone will boot up and respond to touch, but the screen will not turn on. Looking more closely at the back cover, there are a few contacts on there so apparently you have to have the cover on for the screen to work. You could double check to see if there might still be some corrosion on the back cover on those contacts. That's about all I got though.

Problem with Display-exchange

Hello,
First of all i dont know if this is the right forum for my question. If not so please notice me.
After my Z5 dropped on the floor i got an broken Display. I bought a new Display and changed it, but i think i broke the LCD-Flexcable after i pulled carefully on it to get it inside the case. The effect is after phone turn on i get only the backlight but the screen remains black. So for a test i switched my old broken display in it but the effect is the same, only backlight and black screen. After a few seconds the phone led blinks 3 times red and the phone restarts. What the heck is now? Anybody get the same case? I handled the mainboard with care, dont remember to damaged the connector in anyway. Does the Flexcable needs to be protected with a tape so it couldnt be grounded on someway?
Sorry for my bad english. Thanks for any help!
After a second and a third display swap the error is still the same. It seems somehow i damaged the motherboard. I swapped the phone against a new one.
Please help, same problem ...

Possible display damage? Or proximity sensor issue?

Hi everybody.
I’ve had this phone for 10 months now and it’s been great. Yesterday, when i was trying to make a call, it was telling me that i am too close to the screen. I understood that the proximity sensor was acting funny, but I didn’t had time to look into it, because it was not covered by anything and it was in good light. This morning it was a short white flash when I unlocked it or when I was turning the screen off. It worked great all day after that. Then this evening i was using the phone and all of the sudden the screen started to flash white, then it would turn off fast and back on all white. It did that for 4-5 times, then it went in the state you see in the clip below. At one tine, it turned on like nothing happened for 3-4 seconds.
If i plug the charger in, it reacts normal. It's making the charging sound and it vibrates. Seems to be alive in the background, even though it's not displaying anything.
Does it have anything to do with the proximity sensor? Is it the ribbon cable connecting the display to the motherboard faulty? Should i just order a new display assembly?
Interesting, the next day seems to behave a bit different. I had remote erased it, i didn't want any of my personal data to remain on it.
I have found out that if the brightness level is low, i takes a few seconds until it starts blinking. If the brightness is high, then it does that straight away.
Ok, i will post a follow up for anyone else having the same problem. Now i can see that the display is damaged on the top left corner, the pixels are staying lit up bright. Now i can use it on low brightness for longer periods of time without flickering.
I have ordered a replacement screen assembly and i'm still waiting for it, as i don't have the phone under warranty. Looking forward to getting it fixed.
I have also ordered a replacement screen and will replace it when the shipment arrived. Have you found a repair manual for the screen replacement?
I have already removed the back cover of my phone and it seems it will not be so difficult. But it would be better to follow a manual.

I read this post now, I've got this kinda of broblem a month ago, but this happened only when the phone temperature became hot, I mean over 40°C, after a factory reset everything became normal, I no longer got high temperature and this problem don't appear, so at least in my phone it wasn't a hardware problem.

How was the teardown ? I can't find any videos on it. The axon 7 was a pain for me because the aluminum case was a pain to take off around the corners and got damaged a bit. Hopefully removing the back of the axon 10 is a little easier . Thanks for any info
