Only number will be shown, not contact name - Honor 8 Questions & Answers

So I have the problem as described in the headline. For example I added a contact some days ago and I notice today on Whatsapp it has no name. So I go to my contacts and see it shows only the number. But the name is still saved when I click on the number, but for some reason it won't show on Whatsapp or the contacts. Although it's all synced with my google account too.
I got this phone new and made a factory reset.
Anyone has an idea what to do?

You are not running any custom rom right?

I run no custom ROM and save my contacts normal on my google account.

Sync your Google contacts manually from settings once. See if you get them back.

Edit your newly added contact, make sure the person name is not added in Nickname column but add it in Name column instead. The contact app will not recognise and link with whatsapp if it is added as Nickname.

I think it's something with Google. Can you try to remove your Google account and once again add it?

If it's all about your google contacts then remove the google account from your phone and log in back.

Sorry for my late answer, but strangely enough this was the actual problem. By default when you create a new contact contact (unrelated if Google contact etc.) apparently the name you choose is the 'wrong' column called Name Prefix and it doesn't even show the 'correct' column first name. So everytime you create a new contact you will have to edit the contact and put the same name again in the column 'first name'.
It's strange for me and also weird that noone mentioned this before, everyone has to kind of search for a contact sometime and notice this?
Anyway thanks for your input and showing me the fault!

No option to save contact to Google

My TB is not rooted and I have done a hard reset to try to solve this issue with no luck. When I add a contact it will automatically save it to the local phone book and never get an option to save it to google. Even with a sync the contacts I put in my phone never sync. I have searched for a resolution with no avail. Any help is appreciated!
Are you sure you are not over looking the option at the very top? When adding from call log or directly from contacts, the very frist thing on the list says "phone" with a drop down arrow. You can choose to save to google, sim, or phone.

I've been having a similar issue on my rooted Thunderbolt. Every time I flash a new Rom, I lose my most recently added contacts. I just double checked my contacts and I have 16 saved to the phone (not Google) and I see no way to move them to Google. There has to be something simple that I'm overlooking.

Yes, when I save a number from the call list I get the option to "Create New Contact" or Save to existing contact". Either option allows me to type in a name etc. but never get a prompt where to save it nor can I go back and edit the contact and change whether it's saved to phone or Google. I can even hit the "link" button in the top right hand corner and the only option I get is. "All Contacts" I have hard reset the phone twice, and also removed the memory card for troubleshooting purposes.
Ok, I found a fix for this. In your contacts, select menu, import/export, export to SD card and choose to export your phone contacts. Now go to menu, view, and deselect all options except phone contacts. Delete every phone contact you have. Now select menu, import/export, import from SD card, choose the file you just created (if you have more than one) and select Google to import. Now all of the phone contacts are Google contacts and you don't have any duplicates.
As for new contacts, I have an option to select Google or sim but I always forget to. Looks like I'll be doing this often.
Hope this helps you!

I just tested this. I get the option to select phone, google, or sim if I create a new contact but do not have this option if I'm updating an existing contact. I assume it will update that contact wherever it is saved.

yup, it's right under name when you first save the contact. I don't think you can change it afterwards (which is retarded IMO). To be honest, I really like sense, but the AOSP dialer saves a lot of headache in this department...
On one Rom, I actually had to swipe contact entry page down to see the option of where to add number.

Can you post a pic of the screen you get when you add new contacts? I've forgot what the stock contact app looks like. I am on a Sense (Gingerbread) rom so I would think they're the same or similar. When I click phone at the top I get a pop up menu.

If you go to People. Then Menu -> View. Is Google checked? If only one thing is checked then you never get a choice, it automatically assigns the contact to that selection.
I made sure that Google is the ONLY option I have checked. I never get a choice either, but everything syncs to Google and nothing the the Phone or Sim.

[App][2.3+] Who's got the funniest phone number? See if you have a cool vanity number

The app is not actually made for checking if you have a cool vanity number ("1-888-PIZZA"), but that's one way of using it
I created the app as a help for finding meaningful names to a given number, making it easier to memorize numbers.
I'll never forget the security code to my car stereo anymore. It's "cake" - (2253)
If you'd like to check it out, or perhaps see if you or your friends have a fun phone number, you can check it out at play store - NameMyNumber.
Hope you give it a try, and hopefully have some fun :fingers-crossed:
Please also remember that you can select different languages for your results. (Settings button)
Here is a 2 minute youtube video of what the app is supposed to do
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aqXvAn-M5U
Here it a couple of screenshots from the app.

I actually thought about searching through the contact list. It's just that I'm affraid people would be very sceptic if the app needed access to contact info...
What are your thoughts on that? Would you be OK with it?

Well, thats why you can select a given word, and then again get a new search result. Limiting the new search result based on your previous selection. A sort of "drill down" into the results.
That way you may be able to get 2 or 3 words out of your number.
Numbers containing 0 and 1 in the middle part of the number, tends to provide less good result. Since there are no characters for 0 and 1 on the dial pad.
Did you try to combining one word with others?

From my point of view, it depends on what the app does.
- If I expect an app to make lookups in the contacts. then I'd have no problem with it.
If I don't see why an app would need it, then I agree with you.
Perhaps I'll add a "share via" function that enables the user to send a contact to NameMyNumber.
Any thoughts?

Sure, why not. Although it would be easier for the user to pick from a list within the app...
By the way, I showed the app to my younger brother. The app became quite the laugh amongst his friends at school. They where competing on having the best number
Thanks for the feedback, that's very kind of you
If anyone has some more feedback on the app, I'd love to here it.
If not, I suppose I'll leave it as it is, this strange little app...
And then move on to the next project.

It is WRITE_CALENDAR permission. Required for the calendar search and events creation. I do not know why the google name it so. Happy to see new permission model in Marshmallow, - app has support for it.
waw, this is just what I was looking for.
I've been using Call Informer, but isn't updated for a long time ago, and ... most of the times it doesn't work, so this is what I need.
but ... I think it should display all selected fields ( see image below), but I see only notes. Second try I saw also email. Am I doing something wrong?
Also, can this app display notes included on my contacts details?
Thank you for this app, anyway, I'll start trying from now on ...
I don't typically use the native dialer and my carrier number. Instead, 95% of my calls are made/received through Hangouts. Will this work with Hangouts? If not, can it be implemented?
This app is a great idea, by the way!

I understand what you use the other permissions for, but what do you need/ use the following permissions for?
Calendar:
* read calendar events plus confidential information
* add or modify calendar events and send email to guests without owners' knowledge
Other:
* full network access
* view network connections
This is definately an app I would pay for if I can get a clear understanding of the reason for the seemingly unnecessary permissions, especially the full network access permission.

I've had the desire to have an application like this this about 4 months ago.

New gmail account without phone number?

I just thought this may be another place worth asking this... Has anyone come up with a way to create a new gmail without having to give them your real phone number for sms verification? Especially with Sim hijacks on the rise it seems, I'd rather keep my number as private as possible, only people I actually know, or businesses I trust like my bank have my real number, im not one to put it on Facebook or anywhere public like that. But I'd like to create a new gmail account. It gives you no option to dodge the phone number on sign up and use say an alternate email instead. At that, you can't even revive an older, *already* created but haven't logged in for a long while gmail account, without giving them your number.
I've tried things like TextNow, fongo etc these don't allow SMS verification (which is kinda bs cuz what if that was the only phone number I had? What if I had a data only cell plan and that was my one and only number?)
I just wondered if there was any sort of root based way to force gmail to skip the verification, or allow it via another email?
I'm curious about this with other things as well but my current issue is gmail

I believe Google started requiring phone numbers to prevent people (and bots) from creating new Gmail accounts for spam purposes or other means apart from using it personally. You could try following the methods discussed in this article. Cannot guarantee it will work though.

Oh I see. Hope you are able to figure something out!
Or even, if anyone can confirm I'm able to immediately delete my number after sign up, without them saying I'm not allowed because I don't have any other legit numbers I'm replacing it with as they don't accept textnow etc. I don't want to end up providing it and then they won't let me delete it. I really like Google products overall, but this is a bit much for stopping bots. Why not ask for those verification picture things, or something?

Question Name in Contact list but can't find it to send text message

When I open my contacts I have a name for John Jones. But when I open the messaging app John Jones is not in the list of available names. How can I fix this.
Do it directly from contacts...
Do what directly from contacts? I would like see John Jones' in the list of recipients when I open the 'Messages' icon. When I click on the 'blue' Messages icon on the main screen I see a list of the text messages I have. In addition, near the bottom there is an outline of a message box. Below that are the words 'Conversations' and 'Contacts'. When I click on the Contacts the name for John Jones does not appear. When I click on the outlined message box and proceed to select a recipient I get a list that looks very much like my list of Contacts except John Jones is not in the list.
It is only when I click on the Contacts icon on the main screen that John Jones appears.

There should be a pop up if you tap on the contact or at least there is with Pie. It's a little touchy if you don't hit it right and then you need to hit the back button to try over.

I don't upgrade as I like Android 9's core functionality and usability; even after over 3 years I'm still learning about it. Android's lack of version continuity is a true pain... which I choose to avoid.
Does the contact saved have a phone number that you can text, or is it perhaps saved with email only?
Ok. I see what you're both talking about now. I randomly selected several contacts and found they don't all appear the same. I must have a different version of the OS but I see the same icons on some as you do but in a different location. To clarify, I selected Contacts from the main screen. If I click on certain contacts I get your circled list, horizontally, just below the contact name and number. (There is a spot for a picture above the name.) But for some contacts, such a John Johns (fictitious name, BTW) I get none of this. I only get "History" and "Storage Location". It seems all contacts have these last two items. But some contacts have much more e.g. email address, home address, etc. There must be a way to configure the contact. I'll keep looking. Thanks.

If I go through the Samsung phone app and select contacts I get the version I posted previously.
If I go directly to Contacts I get this:
Like Windows there's usually 2 or 3 ways to do the same action in Android.
Well duh!! At some point I clicked to have the contact added and it did just that - it added the name but no number. So just now I manually added a number to John Jones and a miracle happen. John Johns now appears in my list of available recipients under the Messages icon. I know there is a reason I have avoided using cell phones.
Thanks to all for helping will this issue. I'll now go hide and not tell anyone about this conversation.

Yay! Androids can be counterintuitive
Androids are like a jigsaw puzzle at times. All you need to do though is play with it like a little kid. A lot of my actions are more muscle memory at this point when navigating Androids.
On a new phone or UI I can feel lost... damn rabbit holes.
