Android O Beta Battery Terrible - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

Very very high system use.

How long after upgrading so far?
Sent from my Pixel using Tapatalk

Do a factory reset. My battery life is as good as Nougat, if not better.

I've found the standby battery life to be exceptional. However, screen-on time is reduced. The screen definitely uses more battery on this DP4 than the stock ROM.

This is exactly what I'm experiencing. Unfortunately, my SOT is 2 hours less than Android Nougat. Standby with screen off time is exceptional.

Yeah, I used the support feature under settings to submit that observation and my logs. I would be surprised if they weren't already aware. I wonder if it's a screen driver issue and reverting would fix it if it's some other software optimization that needs tweaking. I hope they bring it up to par with Nougat because aside from that, I really like Android O (Orange Whip).

Same observations here. The standby time is about on-par with N, but during screen on/use, the battery life is reduced. My observation is that the idle CPU load/utilization is higher when compared to N. With N, my idle CPU load is around 1 to 3%. With O, my idle CPU utliliztion averages 10-15%. I am seeing exactly the same thing on all 3 Pixel/XLs that I have.
Because O elevated secruity in various areas, none of my diagnostics tools work. I therefore cannot identify what specifically is consuming the CPU. I believe this is the key to figuring out the excessive drain when screen is on. With the little I can glean, it is part of the syste process (as the OP has identified). Let's hope the September patch (if there is one) will resolve the issue.
As a related interest, I have O running on a Nexus 5X and it has no such issue.
All the phones are using EX kernel.

I actually came on to express this exact issue for my device. I went from about 4 hours SOT to 2, the same as you. But idle it seems I can go for 3 days. What the heck happened? Something went wrong somewhere.

My theory is the screen or the CPU is using more battery on Oreo then it did on Nougat. My apps seem to be behaving normally. Hope it's fixed soon.

Mines been terrible since the Oreo update.
Think I'm going to go back to Nougat ?

battery has become utter trash since 8.1 update

anyone else notice it? first off, I'd be at like 40 minutes screen on time before I'd drop to 99 percent... now, it drops immediately after unplugging, and that 40 min screen on time, I'll be at like 69 percent now. it's absolutely ridiculous. battery drains like crazy now, but nothing is running in the background that shouldn't be. everything is identical to pre 8.1 update. today I was at right under 60 min screen on time, at like 59 percent. I looked at old screenshots pre 8.1, and I'd be at like 2.5 hours screen on time at 59 percent. it's absolutely ridiculous that Google is purposely ruining the phone with each update in terms of battery life. I'm not the only one, either. it's on reddit as well. planned obsolescence? yep, I'm starting to think so.

Man. Do you live off grid or something and can only charge every 2 days or something. If you want 3+ hours of SOT than you would have to be close to a charger anyways and that's with any phone. All these phones that have come out late 2016 early 2017 have the same battery set up...use your phone and charge it fast and use your phone some more.
My pixel 2 same as my Moto z2 force and my s8

I really doubt it's any different than it was. It's more likely the battery wasn't reporting correctly in 8.0. When I was on 8.0 the battery would sit at 100% for at least an hour, maybe 2, all the while I was using the phone. Yes, since 8.1 it drops much faster when I first start using it after removing it from the charger but at the end of the day I still have pretty much the same battery percentage left as I did when I was on 8.0. It drops faster to begin with but in the end, it's the same as before. Rather than planned obsolescence, it's more likely they simply fixed something that wasn't working properly before. There's no way you can use one of these things for an hour or more and not have the battery drop below 100%. Just my two cents worth.
Can't complain. Forgot twice to plug it in at night, woke up both times with 45% left. At my regular use that is good. My previous S7 would have been down to <20%. BTW, this:

is just utter BS, maybe you should reinforce you aluminum hat...
I can't say my battery life has been bad or gotten worse with 8.1. If anything it got better. I didn't plug mine in last night, woke up with 38% left. That was about 20 hours since last charge. I don't think Google is purposely obsoleting their newest phones a couple months after release either.....
Edit: I should mention, I have my AOD always on, I have Now Playing enabled, double-tap-to wake is disabled, and I use one of the prepackaged Pixel 2 live wallpapers (Marvelous Marble). The only ting I really do thinking of the battery is turn the phone face down when I go to bed since that shuts off the display.
so i guess the fact that my screen on time has dropped by over an hour means I'm the one who's crazy, and the phone is perfectly fine.... riiiiiggghht.

I'm pretty sure this part of your post is the crazy part. Your battery drain is probably real. Have you confirmed it exists on a clean install without any apps installed or system configurations changed? Only then should you entertain that this is Google's fault. Even then, accusing them of doing it on purpose runs dangerously close to tinfoil hat territory.
I feel my battery life has gone down slightly going from 8.0 to 8.1. Though, I'm running all the bells and whistles this phone has to offer, along with tasker profiles. I also agree with the previous statement. Perhaps the system wasn't accurately measuring the battery life.
I did have horrible battery life for a bit when I was playing with a new kernel and dirty flashing some things to get Viper4Android working.
I have two Pixel 2 phones (non XL), and honestly they are amazing at battery compared to my HTC M8s (again two) . Are they perfect? No. Are they better than any phone I've ever had? Yes.

As has been said above, the battery no longer sticks at 100% for the first hour or so of screen on time, but that was always obviously nonsense anyway so a fair conclusion is that it's now better calibrated. But I've noticed no difference overall in battery life: yesterday was the first time I tried running for 2 days rather than charging overnight, and when I plugged it at night it had run for 41 hours with 6 and a quarter hours screen on and 7% remaining, so really not a problem there.
If you're having trouble with an update:
- Use BetterBatteryStats to figure out if any apps are acting up (or just top off the battery, use phone normally, and check Google's battery stats for Apps Using Battery, standby drain and screen on time)
- Clean flash the factory image, set up phone as new, go through charge cycle and check stats.
I'm not having any issues with battery on 8.1 (clean installed factory image). Easily get 4 - 6 hours SOT. As a matter of fact, my battery life is shockingly excellent for a smaller device like this.
Google is not making battery worse on purpose with their brand new flagship device.
I don't have any issues with the battery after the 8.1 update. It doesn't stay on 100% for a long time like it used to, but like everyone else is saying, that must have been buggy before. It isn't realistic for the battery to stick on 100% with 40 mins of SOT. Overall I don't see a reduction in battery life and I'm quite happy with the 8.1 update.
I was checking BBS and couldn't tell much. Do you still need to install it as a system app?

Not sure. I haven't used it for quite a while. The built in battery info works well enough for me, I haven't been having issues. It's good for checking wakelocks and some more advanced stuff but I think it needs a few cycles/days before it can analyze properly.
I think it's just the way oreo is. Ever since 8.0 it just drains the battery very aggressively. 8.1 the OS runs smoother, but battery drain is still high. Been the case though since 8.0 for me, nothing new.
I haven't clean flashed in over 6 months though. Just been on 7.1 and been rolling up the OTAs and chugging along. I found using Naptime by Franco helps a bit.

IMO battery life has never been great on the Pixel 2. It's the same on 8.1 as it was on 8.0 for me.
Right now I'm trending towards 6 hours SOT (3 hrs SOT at 50%), and I have been BT streaming audiobooks most of the day. I also watched Netflix for 30 min on full brighness. That's better than 8.0 for me, I was lucky to get 5 hrs SOT max.
I would say the calibration is more accurate now, it hung on 100% for too long, so it may appear to drain faster but so far in practice I've gained battery.
Battery life isn't as good as my OP5, but that has a big battery compared to the Pixel 2. I think for it's size it's doing a good job.

I guess you are talking about one of your other devices here, rather than the Pixel 2.
I am getting horrible battery life since going to 8.1
I installed the update the night of the 13th. The past 2 days my battery drains to 20% in about 8 hours. At that point whatever is causing it was stopped by the battery saver mode or the reboot I did when I discovered the phone was in battery saver mode.
Light use at work, staring at my phone is not a thing I have time for. No streaming, no surfing. Just checking texts and emails here and there. Prior to the update I'd get home 12 hours after I left the house and be around 75-80%. Not rooted, not unlocked. Bone stock.
Built in battery stats say 'system' is the culprit. Digging deeper I see Google Play Services app used 70% of my battery from about 7am to around 4 or 5pm this evening. I'd post a screen shot but I didn't to think of taking one before I plugged it in. I just installed BBS and will monitor it for a day.

I thought this was the 5x forum for some reason. Pixel 2 no issues. It was my 5x

Why is my idle battery drain so bad if all my wakelocks look fine? (Pie stable)

Getting fine screen on time, but bad standby time. I left my phone idle for more than 10 hours, and everything looks fine...but I'm draining more than 2% per hour doing nothing! When I use the phone normally, idle drain is closer to 3%, with still not specific problem that can be seen. On Oreo stable, it was around 1.5%, which is still bad compared to my iPhone, but not unbearable. I had no SIM installed because it was in my iPhone, but with or without makes no noticeable difference.
Advanced optimization, sleep standby optimization AND adaptive battery also make no noticeable difference in ANY combination on and off.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Edit: You might also notice the VPN icon, it's not a normal VPN (with active, keep-alive connection), but a proxy for those of us living in China. Again, I've tested on or off, no difference, and you can't see it in wakelocks or processes.

I need those pictures after let's say 6 hours of standby. I need to see standby usage only. So make a custom mark when you go to bed and then take the SS

I don't understand. This is 11 hours of stats idle, on my table at home, with no one touching it. This is no different from ide overnight on my bedside table except total time. I have gathered overnight stats many times with exactly the same results as what's shown here trying to figure out what's wrong.
Could also be a bad WIFI, seen this before for some 5ghz networks.
Is bbs being optimized in battery settings?
try 2.4ghz wifi if you can (where you have good connection, OR just turn wifi off, so we can rule that out the equation.)
make sure better battery stats is NOT being optimized
and try one more time.

Thanks for those suggestions. I hadn't tried switching to 2.4ghz or un-optimizing better battery stats. Unfortunately, there is no noticeable difference yet again. Turning Wifi off totally used to help a bit in Oreo, but hasn't made any difference at all in Pie.
Having the same issue too. Idle drain is fairly high on pie. Wakelocks are pretty clean too. I'm convinced it's something Google related or it's just the system isn't all that optimized as they want us to believe

Thanks for the reply. That makes me feel a little better. Most people on the internet complaining about Pie drain of course has no idea how to actually check anything beyond Android stock battery stats, so there's no way to corroborate.
I noticed that beta 4 has " * Optimized standby power consumption " listed as a system fix. But I don't want to clean flash in and then clean flash out of beta yet again because all of them have had such horrible touch latency that dozens of users are complaining about. But I'm almost tempted to try it.
Can anyone on beta 4 chime in?

I'm on beta 4, first dirty flash and I had 0.3%/hour
I cleanflashed few days back,no root,locked bootloader. I loose 4% in 7hrs 30 minutes. So it's ok.. with GPS,wifi bluetooth on.
Touch latency is like stable pie.
i flashed the ob4 and wait to see battery consumption how it goes! i did'nt lose any files or settings

Thanks for the feedback! But 0.3% / hour? I'm skeptical. I'm not sure that any Android phone has ever been that low draining, ever. Certainly not in my years of experience. I don't think that's possible even with no apps installed. You can't post any wakelock details because you're not rooted... Maybe post a screenshot of your battery usage graph, please?

Thanks. I feel like I'm being really lucky with this device tho.
I will get my root on today, clean flash again and I will just set it up and see where it lands. But I thought no what saves my battery the most is really good reception. The antenna is around 100meters (300 feet) from my house, WiFi is on point aswell (best on 2.4ghz)
So, like I said the bootloader got unlocked, root is on again so everything is fresh.
The smart battery didn't even have time to read apps that's draining battery this is standby usage with stock settings from OnePlus, without any optimizations. Im counting on adaptive battery that it will do its thing after a day or two.
I have around 20 apps installed but the ones that matter for battery is Telegram, instagram, steam.

New pixel 3, will battery life improve??

I just got a pixel 3 and so far am a bit disappointed in the battery life. I have on adaptive battery and am hoping that it will improve. I've turned off ambient display as I heard there was a battery drain issue. Overnight it drops like 15 percent!! I'm probably getting 3.5 to 4 hours SOT max.
Can anyone report back if they found theirs to improve after a few weeks or if you have any tips. TIA!!

It's not just your phone or usage, battery performance is just trash in this phone. I was wondering about the same thing when I got my Pixel 3 (November 2018), I think the overall performance of this phone is bad, Multitasking, I see foreground apps crashing which is ridiculous for a $1000 flagship phone from a company like Google. I don't even have heavy usage, I don't game, all I do is average 3 - 5 minutes everyday phone call, texting most of the time and Spotify 2 - 4 hours every day.
I have also gone through a whole defective phone exchange process because the phone which I received initially had freezing and lockout issues. I am not saying the replacement device is any good, I have seen this new one lock-out too, like completely go retarded, touch would stop responding, phone wouldn't come out of deep sleep, I could tell phone is ringing but I can't pick-up because it won't come out of sleep mode or the screen won't come on. I never had such horrible issues with my 4-year-old MOTO X PLAY which died because of my stupidity, even though it was old, I had better battery performance.
I think it's not the hardware but the whole Android Pie feels like its still in BETA. The whole point for me buying this phone was a Software optimization which is seriously poor and Camera optimization which is outstanding. If it wasn't for Camera, I would have returned this phone and bought a OnePlus 6T.
Let's just hope Google will fix everything.

As long as I can get 4-5 I'm OK
Why don't you try and switch off the adaptive battery? Some people complain about battery drain with adaptive battery on.
Coming from the Nexus 5 I find the battery life great! I always left adaptive battery on and don't feel any difference after 2 months...
And can't complain about any performance problems...

Yeah it's not great. I've got 5H SOT here and there but mostly 3.5-4.5. It lasts me the day so I guess it's ok. Performance is really great otherwise.

Mostly I'm at 3h when I hit 20%.
Overall I've gotten 3-4h SOT over one day (so around 15 hours).
Sleep drain is about 1.25% per hour with AOD off.
I keep location on all the time, BT off, wifi off if I'm on the go.
Other than that everything is at its default setting.
What are you guys doing to get over 4h SOT?
I know it's heavily dependent on your screen brightness, signal strength, how much standby drain and general use/settings.
Maybe you can give some tips.
Android needs time to adapt all for your personal usage. Battery get better and better in couple of days.
I had Galaxy S8 before and Pixel3 batery life is probably 50% better.
But night drain must be around 5%. Bigger drain is probably from weak network. Or bad app.

I got my pixel 3 at launch, left adaptive battery on for 3 months, non-root, all stock, no special tweaks or mods etc.
With adaptive battery on, overnight drain with screen facing down is about 10% over 7-8hrs....
After 3 months I gave up on adaptive battery, turned it off, overnight drain is now consistently less than 5%.
Can't say I'm not disappointed...

Battery

@butchieboy and others
No complaint here for sure, but have any of you noticed a definite worse battery life vs say S20??
Yesterday and today noticed after just a few hours of use I'm down to 70s on battery
In all fairness I did a full Smart switch transfer from S20 to the Note ,, so maybe something screwed up
Any thoughts?

No complaint here for sure, but have any of you noticed a definite worse battery life vs say S20??
Yesterday and today noticed after just a few hours of use I'm down to 70s on battery

I didn't move anything over from my Note 10+. I did a full clean fresh install. And my battery life is MUCH worse than my Note 10+. I even have some drain when it's not being used at all. Hoping it settles a bit over the next few days.

I think this is my experience as well, and apparently not sure to my restoring stuff
Do you guys use FHD+ Screen with Adaptive refresh rate or WQHD+ with 60hz? I use WQHD and it's a little longer.

I did my standard test with Gsam battery monitor: (use the Widget)
1. charge it fully.
2. go to bed and put it next to my bed.
3. In the morning after 8 jours it had just .7%/hour battery drain which is somewhat less than my Note 10+ which mostly gives me .8%/hour battery drain while sleeping during the night..
Huib
First day after overnight change. Almost 6 hout SOT. 4% left at the end of the day.
In my subjective view, so far seems to be definitely worse than my S10+ both with and without adaptive refresh.

We were talking about this on Discord. Granted I only charge to 80% and don't let it drop below 20%. But have noticed that my 10+ battery seems better. I know it usually takes a new device or new firmware once flashed or ota a couple days to calibrate but right now it hasn't been great..not really bad but I thought it would be better. I did noticed that after using that crap out of it then doing a cache wipe and starting my charge cycle to 80% it is a little better. But battery usage will vary depending on how each person uses their device. I switched to 96hz to see if I get a little extra time on battery. And for me...and its just me because I'm kinda OCD..lol I never restore anything, I always start fresh.

I posted a thread on this in general discussion. It doesnt appear any of these cores sleep.
3rd day today. Not bad. 2% left at 9:45 pm. Charged overnight.
No complaints on my end. You guys should give the phone a week to learn your usage patterns and then report back. Be sure to keep performance mode on optimized.

I started out fresh too my OCD will not let me use smart switch or anything else lol.. My battery is doing great but then again I have tons of stuff disabled that I don't use in package disabler and 96hz refresh rate locked in.
Mr Mike glad to see you here bro. I did disable my usual and since my last post, battery is much much better..my complaints have been retracted..lol

The standBy drain can be really bad. It seems to be losing 1 percent after every 5 min. Similar to while screen is on. Did a restart still the same. Google photo somehow keeps using battery while I had it killed and no uploading. Never transfer from my note 10+. Manually installed all apps and data.
Battery's been great for me so far. Looks like about 7 hours of screen time, can't complain about that.

are you on snapdragon?
The first rule of "new phone club" is to not talk about the battery. For at least a week after having the phone. It's pointless. Phone adapts after being used.

Question Battery life

Please use this thread to post everything about the Battery live of our S22 ultras
Pretty bad the first day (drained 40% in 12 hours of not doing anything).
This is currently day 3 of me using it. The battery learning or whatever is done and it is noticeably better (but not perfect). Although the fact that on low brightness/ambient light you are stuck with 120Hz kinda kills the battery in the evening.
My Phone runs actually 2Days and 1hour without Charge. I have 7% remaining and 6h 5 Minutes SOT.
I Use energysaver mode(always on+bluetooth+wlan is non stop on) and all apps in deepsleep that i dont need
For me it´s good so far^^

Thats sad mate... hoped that the Battery will be atleast as good as my s21 ultra...
Hope an Update will fix this. Also using 120hz and Füll HD and mostly mobile data. ...

When it comes to battery drain while the phone is not doing anything (just sitting with the screen off and all apps closed) it is worse than my almost 4 years old S9+...
While using it it is hard to tell, but sometimes it seems to just eat through the battery.

Think the "day one patch" will fix it a bit. Many people have stutter issues seems like driver Problems with the AMD gpu. it will release this Week.

I hope. Although people say that updates won't fix it or make it better, the phone is running firmware from January 1st. So it seems like a prerelease to me.

I would be happy to have your results. Look at my S22 ultra (Exynos 12/256) Battery drain ! Just from reading my mails and using telegram and a little bit of whatsapp
Day one battery life is pretty awful! Hope it improves..
. I take it off at 100% and I watch the battery tick down almost immediately. Just general use dropped 16% in the first hour. Hope it gets better than this.
Q: Whats the name of the Samsung optimizer app that.one is supposed to run after an update?

Wtf thats **** mate :/ hope we will See an Update on the official Release:/
Day three. This has the worst battery life of any device I have used in years. For example, Dropped 5% in first 16 minutes of use today. I used smart switch. Maybe that did it? Or is 5G?
I have 2 full days in now, and the battery life is good. S22U 512K unlocked SD version, no power savers, adaptive brightness. I have fast charge turned off and using Anker wireless charger, recharge in about 3-4 hrs.
Feb 23rd : 8h 43m SOT, 8h 22m screen off, 36% remaining at end
Feb 24th : 8h 48m SOT, 7h 51m screen off, 46% remaining at end
I'm on day 5. S22 Ultra with 12/256. It is technically getting better but I do not like how quickly it drains. I been finishing about 5-6 hours SOT max but with battery almost completely dead. Just from unplugging it and driving to work checking notifications, it goes down to 97%. Never seen a battery drain that quickly. Maybe I am just spoiled from the iPhone battery. Also running everything max QHD, 120Hz, auto brightness and Snapdragon version.
One additional comment, I wonder if the battery drain could be due to the GPU and people's different usage patterns. I don't watch a lot of video or play games and my battery seems OK. That and the reports of the phone getting really hot when playing games and the refresh and screen glitches makes me wonder if people reporting higher drain are using the GPU more.
