Buy S7 again ? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

I have to choose again for a new phone. I had S7 in the past but the bugs of los and laggy touchwzi made me sell it. So now I have to chose again between Galaxy S7, Oneplus 3 and Xiaomi Mi5.
Any recommandation ?
The main things i want from the phone is:
1. battery
2. xda support and development
Any advices, how is S7 development now ? And one more question How is is OP3 battery life compared to MI5 or S7?

Take whichever ever one uses snap dragon/qualcom chipset.

Only exynos variants in my country. Please answer all questions

The S7 international exynos variant has an unlocked bootloader so development is much better than youd expect, but the OP3 surpasses both the others by miles in that category. Not sure about battery comparisons.

[Q] Curious about ROM development

Okay, so I'm looking to get a new phone, and the S6 is very high on my list, next to the One M9. I'd prefer the S6 for several reasons (battery, screen, fingerprint reader, ect) however there is one thing that keeps me on the fence. The S6 uses an Exynos CPU instead of a Qualcomm. What worries me is that ROM porting will be more difficult. The main one I have in mind is the Windows 10 ROM pack, which I really want to use. Currently the only confirmed phones are from Xiaomi, but I figure it would be easier to port it to the Snapdragon 810 then the Exynos. Plus all current windows phones only use Snapdragon processors. Is this an issue? Will the proprietary chipset hurt ROM development?

Actually yes and no. Exynos is a very poweful chip but samsung is a bish when it comes to releasing source code. See what they did with exynos 4 ( 4210 and 4412 i.e. one on s3 and note 2 ). Still the s3 had amazing rom support. I flashed my s3 the day I got it. I never had a problem with it, used it for 2 years ( thats for most of us). Keeping rom support in mind I got a Nexus 6 this march, and it had almost the same roms as the s3 had, BUT yes snapdragons are very friendly when it comes to sources. It does take huge developer efforts for building and maintaining exynos sources using reverse engineering. I got rid of my nexus 6 ( 2 units) because they had such ****ty quality control (Moto sucks in this area). S6 will have enough roms soon .. just initially it will take time but soon it will pick up pace.
Yeah, I've actually decided to go with the Oneplus One, it has a bigger battery, and more storage, I don't really care about the resolution (my eyes can't see it), and it's infinitely cheaper. However, since you seem to know so much about processors, what is the deal with Mediatek? I just don't get it, every device I've seen with them are horribly sluggish, and I'd think that a similarly priced Snapdragon would be more powerful.

Samsung Galaxy S7 vs LG V20

So, some background to my story.
I was saving up for an S8+ but had to use that money somewhere else. Need to a buy phone ASAP and looking at previous gen flagship.
I currently have a Redmi note 4 and I don't want another mediocre mid level phone. I really don't like the camera or the sound quality.
Now my budget isn't much. I can spare about $320.
I am getting an S7 (G930T) for $335 and a V20 (H918) for $300. (Both are brand new)
My only concern for the S7 is no development since it is snapdragon (Can't find a cheap Exynos). As for the V20, plenty of development but no future updates (S7 will get official Oreo).
I live in India and will be importing these devices through a family member. I've already looked at OnePlus and they aren't selling for cheap, both the 3T and 5.
All I'm looking for is a day's battery life, good camera and sound quality. Not much of a mobile gamer.
Basic needs are WhatsApp, Reddit, Snapchat, Instagram and YouTube. No Facebook.

Did you consider the Moto x4, HTC U11 life, and maybe a used one plus 3? If you are looking for great development, then the 3 is your best choice. Also, if you like sound quality, the axon 7 could also be a good choice.

Galaxy S10E or the Mi 9

Straight to the point, I'm looking to purchase one of the phones but I'm not sure which to get. I'm mostly looking into the selfie camera and XDA support so yeah not sure which one

I will go for Xiaomi mi 9. Wide angle camera, Dual SIM, Amoled, My mother toung, Call recorder and great price. Only missing 3.5 aux but I will survive. BB Oneplus....
My list:
Mi9: Most likely better AOSP support, cheaper
S10E: better screen, 3,5 jack, smaller size
I'm also thinking about buying either the Mi9 or S10E. At the moment, I'm slightly leaning towards the Mi9 because of the price and also because I don't really like Samsung's software.
That being said, Samsung has improved radically over the past years and Xiaomi is not exactly delivering mint Android either.
As for the size: Would love to buy the Mi9 SE but it looks like it's not going to be available in Europe and that it will also lack the necessary 4G bands to make it work properly.

Would definitely go for the Mi9. Depending on region Samsung has decided to use their Exynos variant in comparison to Snapdragon 855.
We all know the Exynos is faster than the Snapdragon 855 but with regards to power efficiency, we are still unsure. Last years Galaxy S9 Exynos variant suffered from severe battery issues which ultimately resulted in me returning my S9 within the cooling off period.
The Mi 9 is very attractive with its Snapdragon 855 and scores well on gsmarena battery test even beating the p20 pro (4000mah) which I currently own and would not sell apart from sh** selfie camera being worst ever. Ultimately Samsungs decision to only ship Exynos variant phones within the UK is a shocking one.
We should be given the choice
Mi9 I've just received mine.
I was going to get the S10+ but when I seen this and the price tag my mind was made.
Screen is great, cameras front and back are brilliant, it's so fast and smooth it's unreal. Fingerprint scanner is very good it's so quick and accurate nothing like OnePlus 6t that was dreadful for me.
Only think this device doesn't have for me is dual speakers, IP rating, SD slot.
Buy Mi9 Only if you dont mind the lack of OIS....camera at night is a joke.i sell mine for that after just 24 hours!!!

Agreed, camera so far one of the aspects I'm slightly less pleased with, especially coming from the Pixel 2 xl. However, a Mi 8 gcam port works already and so does night sight, which even though its not meant for this device works pretty well. So I'm definitely gonna be patient and follow its development as great things await us I believe! Would be great if we can use the telephoto and wide angle cameras with the gcam port!
I have installed gcam in mi9 with night mode... quality better BUT NOT with low light.you need a tripod ..theres not optical image stabilization (hardware)

I'm not so sure about "Exynos" is faster than 855, of course maybe Samsung phones with Exynos feel faster than Snapdragon?

This years exynos has also failed in terms of battery life.
The snapdragon 855 is way more efficient than the exynos

Exynos is only better in singlecore (multicore is faster in 855) but exynos does that at the expense of a lot of heat and battery. Also the GPU in 855 is like 2 generations better than exynos.
yes, my s9+ exynos still does beat the mi9 in single core. but the s9+ gets beaten in gpu tests even by my older mix 2 NON S (snapdragon 835!!.. not 845!!) 855 gpu is a beast. Exynos s10 gpu is just slighty better than s9 exynos because they did improve the power per core.. but removed like 40% of the cores... (g72mp18 vs g76mp12)
and that single core perf. is irrelevant.. My mix2 with a good rom is AT LEAST as fast as the s9+ in app opening, web surfing etc.. believe I tested.

What would you replace a S7 with in 2019?

Hi there,
my S7 which is my one and only phone has currently reached the end due to repeated drops the hardware seems pretty damaged and not worth repairing anymore. It will still work for a couple of months but I need to replace it within the next 3 months I'd say.
Requirements:
- superb camera (at least as good as the one of the S7,8,9 or 10)
- Camera2 API
- rootable (I need magisk and xposed)
- ideally having a supported Custom OS available - any minimal one will do
- the size should not be much bigger than an S7 - I really don't like to handle those huge phones.
- must be available in Europe
I'm a very casual user, I don't play any games requiring great graphics power, I use gmail, whatsapp, facebook daily and listen to music.
The S7 / 8 / 9 / 10e are pretty close to each other price-wise here in Europe but I thin S10e is too new to have reliable Custom Roms and rooting solutions.
Can you recommend a phone to repalce it with keeping in mind the requirements I have for a phone?
Hello,
After the display of my S7 is broken I just bought my second S7: 1 year old and without any issues - looking like new - for 150€. There's no smartphone on the market better than the S7.

my display is perfect but I have replaced the back of the phone twice already, and I guess it dropped so oftern it now has random reboots (definitely hardware related) so its time to replace it.
pricewise, an S7 slightly used can also be bought for about 150€ an S8 used for about 200€, S9 is used about 350€ and S10e is about 500€ new.
So I might well go for an S8 as its only slightly more expensive than an S7 and custom ROMs seem to be available for S8
Just be careful with the S8's if custom ROM's is on your list. I didn't follow it closely but I recall reading several times that the S8 can't be bootloader unlocked right away due to a timer, and some people have never had it become unlockable, even after trying all the tricks.
Note9
variant with Exynos processor (international version)
or
variant with Snapdragon processor and dual sim (9600 US version)
the others have locked bootloaders, and devs haven't figured out how to root.
only downside is curved screen edges, but Samsung isn't smart enough to figure out that is not ideal for the Note format.

I'm seeing Note9 on Amazon for $595USD. That's about 542€
I bought my Note9 many months before the Note10 release, and I see the Note10 release has NOT really caused much more of a drop to the Note9 price. Obviously these are all very expensive phoes, but the 10 has some design elements that many are not happy with.
I brought mine new on ebay for about $100 less than amazon.

SecurePhone 2021

Hi All,
2021 is here and I'm concerned about my privacy (finally).
I'm looking for a phone with good specs, capable of being run on Verizon in the US, and won't break the bank. ($500 is my ceiling)
I've looked into this year's budget offerings but been slightly disappointed with them enough to avoid them. What seems to be the best bet is a 1 or 2 year old flagship device.
I used to root and rom until vzw started locking the bootloaders on their Samsung lineup. I unfortunately went to iPhone a few years later, but now that I'm turning out to be more privacy minded over convenience, I've returned to the idea of purchasing an android to flash a custom privacy minded rom.
As I've been out of the game for so long and my preliminary research has been unfruitful, I waned to ask if you could point me in the direction of a few phones and roms that would run on verizon.
Thanks in advance!
jonnyboiii
You could get a used Note 10+ but it probably be around $650 from a reliable source like B&H Photo. Note 9's are less.
I go for something running on Pie as Q and up are screwed to hell in my opinion. With Pie you can use the freeware app Karma Firewall to lock it down as all it's features like logging are fully functional.
Between Samsung and Android the last year has not had many good offerings.
If I had to replace my 10+ now I be very tempted to go with another 10+... that's how bad the newer models/OS's are. I don't recommend any of the new Samsung phones as my overall impression of them is they're unacceptable.

Been looking into that phone in particular; perhaps I should go into the subforum Q&A, but...
It looks like there are no ROMs really available for the Note10. I could only find one ROM and some recoveries in the subforum. Didn't there used to be subforums for carrier specific models?
Apart from the Pinephone, is there a privacy-minded ROM that you know of? Just needs to be able to run on some decent phones.

It can be a little hard to find:
Samsung Galaxy Note 10+
The Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ is a 6.8" phone with a 1440x3040p resolution display. The Exynos 9825/Snapdragon 855 chipset is paired with 12GB of RAM and 256/512GB of storage. The main camera is 12+12+16MP and the selfie camera is 10MP. The battery has a 4300mAh capacity.
forum.xda-developers.com
I'm on a AT&T stock 10+ 512 gb/Pie. Don't get the 5G variant but the 512 gb variant running on Pie is sweet. I recommend you stay on Pie.
Q and 11* are fqcked up and you will take a performance/functionality hit.
A very fast/stable, rock solid phone. 6o hz screen refresh rate but a drop dead gorgeous display.
No 3.5 mm jack so you'll want a pair of Buds+ or Buds Pro for it.
I simple use Package Disabler Pro, Karma Firewall and settings to lock it down. No force reloads due to malware yet.
I don't root and with this phone running on Pie it's not needed. Be nice but most likely be a time gravity well for me.
* the newest phones have faster ram and cpu but Android 10 and 11 handicap the faster hardware by using more cpu cycles. If you're tired of the Apple trip I'd stick with Pie
