This is just an idea I have been thinking about.. How about an app or a tweak so that the youtube app thinks its on wifi meanwhile its actually using the 3g... is that possible?
I have a feeling that T-Mobile's 3G can't quite keep up with most YouTube streams. Sprint and VZW are the only real 3G providers in the US unfortunately
I wouldn't be so quick to say that. the G1 handles pretty good quality streams through others apps such as the weather channel app and a few other entertainment apps that have very high quality streams compared to Youtube over 3G. With google rolling out higher quality (HD) support on their website, they should be offering the same quality on mobile devices.
lol i suggested this in the irc channel. yeah, the 3g speeds are very fast and load regular quality videos MUCH faster than they play. i would say it could definately handle the high quality videos. just have someone edit the program so u can toggle between regular links and links with "&fmt=18" at the end.
i thought i read somewhere that the over wi-fi the youtube videos are more hi-def..
guess that's obvious though
i wish they come up with something like mixtube like the iphone~~it can allow user to select the qualities of video either in 3g or wifi~~it stream the video in to internal memory~~and can be play offline ~

you can actually choose the qaulity of some videos on Vtap...go to m.vtap.com...unlike the 'wikitap' application you can actually view the videos from the site

Doesnt seems to work here in the Netherlands... (I guess its america only... )
So ive noticed that there is a new (maybe old) feature on YouTube when i access from my PC for watching vids in high(er) quality...since it is YouTube that is offering this option does anyone know if we will be able to watch Vids in higher quality from our G1's??? they are still very choppy (opinion)

not sure if you are aware of this, but youtube plays at a higher resolution if you are connected via wifi vs 3g/edge.

ya ive tried and noticed a slight difference but wifi connection is not always available to me...
if you've only noticed a slight difference, then the video you are watching was low quality before it even made it to youtube
The higher quality option within the standard Youtube site utilizes h.264 with AAC.
As far as I know the G1 uses only the old standard .FLV through its built-in player when using WIFI.
When running on EDGE or 3g the G1 Youtube player player connects to the mobile .3gp stream.
The iPhone on the other hand uses the h.264 stream when wifi is connected, or the .3gp stream when in EDGE or 3G coverage (although downloading of the higher quality stream is available through the device with MXtube.
I own the two devices and will be doing a few comparison videos in a week or so. It is interesting that no reviewer has commented on the fact (or what I believe to be a fact) that the Youtube viewer on the iPhone is a lot nicer to use and watch on the whole, despite Google owning Youtube. Really they should have offered the best mobile Youtube experience on the G1.
One GOOD point about the use of .FLV streams is that they load a LOT faster. The same stream in h.264 on my iPhone can take many seconds to buffer - even with my 10mbps broadband connection - where the same clip on the G1 buffers almost instantaneously. I suspect that Youtube throttles their h.264 streams (for reasons best known to themselves) since I have no problem streaming the BBC's lovely h.264 iPlayer streams.
I suspect it is HTC who actually made the Youtube app, and that it will be improved, or even replaced with the Cupcake release.
Another problem which is slightly off topic and will NOT be improved with updates is that the G1's loudspeaker is vastly inferior to the iPhone 3G's (though much better than the pathetic iPhone 2G speaker).
Sound quality for me is very important when I'm watching videos on my device, and as I've swapped and changed between my G1 and iPhone over the past couple of weeks I've found the speaker quality of my G1 to be a source of great irritation being as it is just so tinny. and annoyingly positioned. Despite being only monaural the iPhone 3G's speaker is one of the best out there.
Me and my friend did a comparison, he has iphone and i have g1 obviously. Both of us are in 3g are and his quality blows g1 away. I agree youtube videos looks pretty horrible on g1 with or without 3g. Speaker is definately behind in the iphone wars also. I have noticed that i pick the videos up much faster than iphone but i would wait for quality. Alot of youtube videos are low quality video's however.
maybe someone can impliment a "force &fmt=18 string" at the end of every youtube video link that gets played to force the quality to be good. but of course, you would have to wait for it to load too, so they should make it an option when you press the "menu" button, maybe they could do something in the next custom firmware for root users.

thts actually a great idea as this code provides excellent resolution on PC's, and i wouldnt mind waiting as stated above i would rather have higher quality...
Has anyone compared the video quality when launching videos from the youtube.com website instead of searching for them with the youtube app? I believe the app normally searches m.youtube.com which has videos that are reencoded with a lower quality.
WOOOOO
so keeping in mind the "&fmt=18" code at the end of the actual vid URL i tried this...
1) go to the actual website www.youtube.com (not app)
2) search/click on any vid, it will ask you if you want to use the "youtube app" or "browser", Click browser
3)once the page opens you will see the flashplayer error, hit the menu button and "go to url" add the code "&fmt=18" to the end of the url then copy
4)go to www.keepvid.com and paste in the blue box then click download
5)scroll down and you will see 2 options to download make sure u click the mp4 high quality link...(not the flv link)
6)WAHHLAAAHH enjoy looks 5times better even though takes 5 times longer lol hope this is worth it for some of you
nice find. you can also use the fmt=22 addition to get HD videos from youtube.
on a side note, i was trying to find an easier way to do this and found that if you look it up in the application, you can just use Menu/share to send it to yourself. before you send it, you can add the URL extension of choice and when you get the email and click on it, it will ask youtube or browser. select youtube and it will play, but it seems to drop the added extension. if we could find a way to make it keep it, it would effectivly remove the need to use www.keepvid.com
and the 720p vidoes (if available) do play very well and look AWSOME on the phone!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pXfHLUlZf4&fmt=22 (the one i d/l to my phone to test a HD video)
I found a way to not have to d/l the video. just copy the link from www.keepvid.com and put it into the Meridian Video Player from the marketplace. It will stream it no problem, including the HD ones... (does not work with the youtube link and the added extension, but at least you dont have to d/l videos anymore)
If there would be a way to use longclick to have an option to open it in Meridian, you could do this probably from the youtube page even. Or if a similar option would be available from the mail app, then you just send the link and click!
Just to comment, but none of the youtube videos are anywhere close to 720p in resolution. They are indeed pretty good for streaming videos but those are probably about 800x480 or something along the lines of that.
Just a note, since I see there is a lot of interest in streaming video content on the G Tablet, with a bunch of people excited that we had the TV.com app working now that we have full market access.
Though we still have no Netflix, and you can hack your way into making Hulu sort-of work, Amazon Video On Demand works as is - it's all Flash video, and plays just fine on my G Tablet.
I just watched the first quarter of Hellboy and then watched a full episode of Lie to Me Season 2, which I already had in my Amazon Video Library from purchasing for my Roku.
Make sure you are on the full desktop Amazon site, not the mobile site (may need to change your User Agent depending on your browser configuration). Just click on Full Screen once the video player loads, and you'll get the movie you want in full screen glory.
Also, as with everything video-related, after sleeping and waking up, the G Tablet is a bit stuttery unless you use OverclockWidget to force the min clock speed higher. If that happens to you and you don't feel like using OCWidget, a quick reboot should solve the problem.

Can someone who has the Player and an HDhomerun give this apk a try? This looks promising for live TV on the Player...

I tried this last night. It does not work - it just searched for channels indefinitely. Also in the thread there is talk of it not working anymore even on the ADT1. I guess changes to lollipop broke the app.
Sent from my Nexus 5
Well hopefully they get this worked out this is my main reason to buy this so I can ditch comcraps cable boxes
That was broken with changes to Android TV by Google. But give Silicondust some time, they are probably working on a fixed version.
As someone who got to play around with it a lot on my ADT-1, I can say it worked pretty good for a test app on a test build of android tv.

You can still do that without this. If you have an pc you can use as a pvr then there are xbmc addons that will enable you to watch/record live tv from the nexus player. Even better since you get pause/rewind as well, which I assume this app did not have given the lack of storage for live tv buffer on these devices.
Sent from my Nexus 5
I got mythbutnu set up I'm just not a fan of the xbmc style channel guide. Seems like they were working on a lean back style interface with this app that I was interested in
SiliconDust VIEW app works outside TV Input
The latest update to SiliconDust's HDHomeRun VIEW app hit the Play Store on Friday. While it doesn't tune properly from within the TV Input Plugin on my Nexus Player, I can access my channels perfectly by launching the VIEW app itself (which has the same interface as on a tablet). While it's not showing up in the Play Store on the Nexus Player, you can install it from the web version of the store and it will show up properly in the leanback launcher.
The activity on their development forum for Android TV makes me hopeful that they'll have it sorted out soon. The changelog listed support for Android L and Android TV, but only stated support for the ADT-1. I assume some of the remaining issues may be having to do with ARM vs x86, but I don't have an ADT-1 so I can't be sure they don't have the same problems at this stage.
so if the apps works can you tell us does the video stutter when viewing hd channels?

Works on my hd homerun prime.
Sent from my Nexus 5
Do you have an AC router
I have a trebdnet AC 1900. Still stutters om HD from time tv time. It may be that the quad atom processor have more power than the amazon fire processor or it may be that it takes advantage of the AC speeds.
Yeah forgot that I have a usb ethernet adapter. Maybe that's why mine doesn't stutter.
Sent from my Nexus 5
I have a HDhomerun Dual. The View app works for me on Nexus Player. Seems like there's a little stutter in picture every now and again (unit is about 1 foot from an asus 68u). But may just be my imagination. Def better than on my Nexus 5 tho, which is practically unwatchable even 10 feet from the router.
Turns out the View app works for my Prime as well. The TV app only gives audio, and only on some channels.
Another app to try

If you can not get it to load email the developer and see if he can give you a beta so you can try it on the Nexus player. It is better than the HD homerun app on the market. It is called Tune N View it works if the Mysterious Nexus box plays MP2, MP4 and AC-2 audio if it does not support natively it does not work. It works on Minix 8 and other boxes that support those video and audio formats. If this does not work I will place my order of this box on Ebay and just return it and work with what I have. I called Nexus support and they could not tell me which video and audio formats this device supports, really? That's like buying a car and the dealership not knowing what engine it has. I am trying this although I have a fully rooted amazon fire tv which works great. I am hoping this device can deliver with this app and the following:
Root to install external hard drive
My nexus 4 has 16 gigs whats up with 8 gigs?
XMBC (just in case Tune N View does not work)
xbox 360 wireless control support
Hdhomerun App
Finally I was able to compare Nexus Player vs Fire Tv for usage with my homerun prime. I can say that it most be the combination of the Asus AC1900 that I got along with the processor which makes it work alot before with much less stutter then with the fire tv box. The one gripe I have with Nexus why provide much less video codecs support off the bat compared to google tv boxes like my sony box. Tune N View works great on Google Tv (one of the few apps I love on Google TV). Basically less stutter device has less power put they have the needed video and audio codecs. The developer is always involved and did I already mentioned that is better than the official Hdhomerun App. Nexus next time don't be cheap and have those video codecs you know that your getting a geeky crowd to buy these type of devices. Overall I believe I will keep this device now that the Hdhomerun is working better on this device. You can also use the DLNA support on Xmbc for viewing channels as well, FYI.
Can anyone make the Tune n View apk available.
With root & running LolliRock, the "No Carrier ASUS FUGU" aka Nexus Player, is not eligible to download the app via web, and I cannot seem to locate a legit apk to sideload.
Looking for this APK as well...

My NP is unrooted but I'm sideloading apps to try them out and I would love of copy of this apk as well. Can't seem to install or download from the Play store either. Thanks.
I'll be curious to see once the VLC for NP is updated to work with streaming over network. That could be a solid option as well.
Thanks.
Dan
I purchased an HDHomeRun Prime and it worked great for wired devices on my network. But it didn't work so great in my dualband 5g wireless setup. So that translated to an awful experience with my Nexus Player. I wonder if it is because it seemingly doesn't compress the Live TV cable stream out of the HDhomerun (mpeg or transport stream 'ts' output).
Instead of trying to load a usb wired network connection on my NP, I just sent the device back and got a refund. Great in theory, not so pretty in real world application.
Hello everyone,
There's a strange problem with the device, I do not know if anyone else has come across it yet. As I know the device supports the flac file.
Both apps do not play flac files.
deezer plays some songs and then pops a message "the requested content is not loading"
This happens both through wfi and when I use the cellular network. I have no problem using a router for 4k content in Netflix. Deezer's technical support says they have no idea what I'm talking about.
I checked the app on Samsung A8 with the same router, the app works great.
I suspect it's something to do with settings, or a software problem.
I've tried so far:
1. Change the application management to manual management
2. Cancel lte volte
3. Delete and reinstall the app
4. Reset device to factory settings
Does anybody have any idea?
Thanks in advance
Not sure about FLAC, but I have Deezer and using with my P20 Pro (Canadian version) and do not have any trouble.
If you give some tips to test FLAC with my phone, I will do it quickly, I am curious.
I was under the impression that Deezer hifi wasn't available through the android app for normal download/streaming. It's only available for streaming to Chromecast or similar. At least that's the only options I have.

My apologies, I am on Deezer Premium Trial and I can not switch to Hifi without being charged full cost.
Really sorry, I am really curious.
Hope someone could test and take us noticed.
I have no option to stream hifi, yet I have the correct account and can stream flac on my pc and squeezebox (ick stream).
And from what I can see from deezer's support android only works through casting to another supported device, otherwise it's 320kbs HQ
support.deezer.com/hc/en-gb/articles/115004588345-Deezer-HiFi
Even deezer's forum has stated that neither iOS or Android support direct steaming in Hifi yet.

Are you using your phone with headphones or Bluetooth? Or casting to another device?

thanks for checking it up!
most of the time im streaming it via Bluetooth to my car head unit with no problems
the problems start when im using my p20 pro without streaming (no headphones as well)
question, even if android cant support hifi playing without streaming to another device
why my p20 pro is working and then after few songs getting jam? even more what kind of sound quality my p20 is outputting? cuz im still getting hifi symbol when im playing songs direct from the p20.
have you look at my video? you can see it.
another thing, its not ok that deezer dosent saying anything in the ad that show that hifi plan
its kind of stupid.
Just watched your video, HQ is 320kbs MP3 not flac I'm afraid.
As for the loading issue I can't say I've experienced any problems (UK based if it makes any difference) but I'll have a play and see if I can replicate it.

i think i understand what happen.
i took the hifi plan via pc (this is why you didnt saw hifi plan option in your p20)
i think this is why my p20 is jaming when its playing music.
i didnt notice that hq =mp3
i think that they should have mention the android limitation in the plan page in advance
this is the only reason that i took it. in 2019 its funny that android cant do it direct
i should downgrade my plan
thanks mate
No worries.
I agree it's daft that they have limited their market for their hifi subscription by making it available through a select number of products. It does seem a pretty half-hearted attempt to compete with tidals flac streaming.
But allegedly it's coming......
