Charging speed - OnePlus 5 Real Life Review

To power up, you consume Red Bull. But your phone just needs its adaptive fast charger. Rate this thread to express how quickly the OnePlus 5 can charge. A higher rating indicates that it charges extremely fast.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

It's about not only charging speeds... But also the heat while charging
And in both situations, dash charge is superior to any quickcharge solution i've tested.

I can confirm. Alot faster and still cool battery. It charges with 3 amperes through than with an anker charger that fills your battery with 1.2 amperes through.

Dash charging is the bomb. Even without the Dash charger, the phone charges awfully fast.

lighting fast

Easily gets through a day with heavy usage with plenty of power left in the battery.

Super fast charging speed.

from 5% to 100% at 68 minutes. No limits ROM, bluspark kernel

I don't think my phones ever overheated.
Dash charge works phenomenally well, I've never known a charger this fast.
Problem for me is I have a tonne of other USB-C chargers which even though they have similar voltage and amp output they sometimes charge slowly or normally, so you would need to buy another dash charge to get the same speeds.
I have another charger (Dash) but no second cable, lost it. Using another USB-C cable doesn't allow Dash, so the cable matters too.

I saw a video on youtube with charge speed comparison between flagship phones, one+5 was fastest there (1 hour 13 mins). pixel 2xl there was around 2 hours 40 mins)

啥?

Fast charging only hurts the battery health if it overheats.

so this device can't be connected to wall charger more then 2 hours, right ?

The time connected to the charger isn't exactly a factor here. You could leave it on the charger for days and it likely won't get very hot, because it will only be trickle charging it to keep it at 100%.
Now, there are other things that cause battery life issues, but I was specifically referencing excessive heat, which is the number 1 battery killer.

My girlfriend oneplus 3 after 1.5 year still got 6 h + sot, dash charge is great

If my phone is on, it usually takes an hour or less. Since the last update it has been faster.

DASH charging is super fast, while charging with QC 2.0/3.0 charger or any other charger its reaaaaally slow.

No heating on charging even if i use this beast.
Gets me full charge in around 100 minutes.
Sometimes it charges really quick around one hourin my office (i think power supply in my office is better than my home) but takes 100 minutes at home mostly.

[Q] How does the fast charge work?

So according to the advertising, these will give you 4 hours of movie watching time, with a ten min charge. How does that work?
It charges the battery faster.
Well that advertising is wrong i get 5-6 hours sot on %100 battery
Sent from my SM-G920F
I have tried higher amp chargers on other phones and it charges them faster but the charge also drops faster.
It doesn't happen on the s6 ofc, the s6 has special hardware and fast charging capable chargers for it, it isn't just a higher amp charger

I don't know if it's 4 hours, probably is. All I know is it is very fast and 10 minutes gives it a great shot in the arm.
The fast charge spec can charge at 5v like normal USB, or 9, 12, or 20v
It'd be dc-dc converted in the phone to charge the 3.8v cell but at a higher current than if it were only converting 5v
The charger with it looks to only do 9v, my moto charger does 12 and I have a cheapo that claims 20v but I've not owned a phone that would negotiate that high yet.

Battery lasts longer after normal recharging than turbo charging

Hi,
I noticed that when I recharge it with a charger that is only 650ma the battery last much longer than with turbo charger that came with the phone.
Even in standby after recharged it takes one hour to consume only 1% but after turbo recharging it takes about 10 min to drop 1%.
Is there anyone experiencing something like that?
Funny it is.... The case is opposite for me... Although I use Transomart QC 2.0 charger. My battery lasts longer when I charge it with quick charger compared to standard 1 Amp chargers.
That´s so weird.
I am preparing a comparison to figure out what's happening.
It happens the same here. I've a Aukey turbo charger and the battery drains faster

I also got Aukey and it's the same
There's no way to actually know the charge (in mAh) of a battery without draining the battery. The way that phones estimate the charge is by measuring the voltage of the battery. Quick Charge 2.0 (supported by the Moto X 2014) uses a higher voltage to charge the battery faster. This can make the battery hit max voltage before it is actually fully charged. That is why Quick Charge always advertises how quickly it gets to 80%. To get to full charge (not just when it shows 100%, but when it is actually fully charged) will take about the same time as a standard charger.
Heat and Turbo charge destroys your battery.
if i turbo charge , my phone will suddenly die when it's between 10-20%. W/ regular charging I get sudden death at 6-8%
i use a moto razr 850mah charger and solved the 8% sud power off, took 2 charge cycles from death to 100% leaving it overnight. Now battery works as it should
.
As I've been reading around (can't recall specific scientific data), the faster you charge the battery, the less capacity it can hold. So it makes sense that it lasts longer if you charge it slowly. I don't know how much would be the difference tho.
It is normal in my opinion. Slower charging is also healthier for the battery and usually will last longer
Has anyone ever used a wireless charging pad with the phone. I bought a stick-on one from amazon and it charges fine,,,slower but fine. However, I noticed that it tends to get suck at certain levels and if I take off the wireless charger at say 89 percent,,,it takes less than a min to go to 100 percent charged?
Recomendeed is charge with Motorola original charger of this device, i mean 1150mAh dual port charger
Anyone here with experience of using Motorola's Turbopower 15 wall charger? I'm thinking to buy one, because waiting for 1 hr to charge to 100% is quite annoying.

[Q] charging speed is pretty slow even when battery care is off

guys even when my battery care is off charging speed is pretty slow takes around 2:30-3 hours for a full charge.
quick charge should be 60% in 30 minutes right? I wouldnt mind it being 2 times slower than that, full charge at 100 minutes which is 1:40 hours but to get to almost 3 hours its even worse than no quick charge phones
how can I fix this?

Ive got the same charger bro and mine just charged 38% in 40 minutes
I bought a vetter charger with qc3 and it's charging from 10% to 100% in ~2h40m, with battery care disabled. This qnovo is really bad.
0-50% 2400mah
50-60% 2000mah and so on.
I've bought a Anker quick charger 3.0.

well maybe so but the higher the percentage the slower the charge speed, which leads to total of 2:40 hours to full charge up to 3:00 hours sometimes
so maybe the first 60-80% are quite fast but it still takes around 100 minutes to get to 80% and another 60 minutes for the other 20% at least which leads to a total of around 160 minutes which is around 160 minutes in total which in quick charge it should do 80% in 35 minutes and the other 20% in 40 minutes or so which leads to total of 75 minutes which is more than 2 times less.
and to think of the first 80% in quick charge it even does it almost 3 times faster!
Your charger is not quickcharge. Quickcharge must have lightning with 3.0 simbol near USB plug and P+ with 2.0 simbol on the other side of plug. Only Sony UCH12W has Quick Charge™ 3.0 and Pump Express Plus™ 2.0. Your Chrger is Sony UCH20C. Am I wright?

yes but thats not the case, I checked youtube, even stock charger is faster to get to 60% than other devices (except the 1+5) but after 60 it just dies! slow as hell
even on quick charge 3.0 it maybe charged to 70/80% faster than stock charger but it still took it 2:40 hours to get to full 100% just like stock charger
so im guessing sony has their reason for shipping the phone with stock charger as it is even faster than other devices to charge to 60% so fast charge wouldnt help it so much because of qnovo

Warp charge slower than advertised

Hi,
for me, the charging speed varies between 50 and 75 minutes for a full charge. It says warp charge 65 on the lockscreen. Any idea, what might cause it being slower than it should be? I am on OOS 11.0.4.5.
Thanks
Mine actually charges faster than advertised. It charges from totally discharged to fully charged in 35 minutes with the phone turned off.

Check to see if you have optimised charging enabled. If you do then that slows down charging.

Thanks, it is switched off. Do you know how much current is used when charging at about 60%? According to 3C, it is between 1,800 and 2,800 mA. Only once, I have seen about 6,000 mA in a similar situation. Somehow this looks rather random to me.
Warp charge is as advertised for me. Any other charger is extremely slow. Gsam shows I'm at about 3400 while charging from 60-70.

I stop paying attention to the current because in the end it doesn't matter what instantaneous current I am seeing. I always see it starts with 5500+ mA for just a few seconds and drop to 3000+. I ignored it and just let it charge (phone on, screen off).
I usually charge from 2x % to 90%, and it takes no longer than 25 minutes most of the time. Averaging 2.5~3% per minute.
Usb cable or usb port of your phone might be at fault.
My 8t takes less than 40 mins even with optimized charging turned on.
Because my phone says Warp charge 65, I do not think charger or cable are broken. I try to avoid uncharging my phone to a low level, so I cannot tell how long it would take from empty to full.
The other observations are like what @zellleonhart is describing. I had just wanted to rule out hardware issues for a new device.

That used to happen to me. 65w would only happen for some charges and other times it would be slower taking over an hour to fully charge. Now it charges fast every single time in 40 mins or less. Not sure what fixed it but I have a t mobile variant converted to the latest eu 11.0.5.6 and optimized charging off. I don't always charge full but the first 15-20 mins being fast seems important imo since that can be done after waking up and getting ready
I think we are all forgetting that we aren't charging one 4500 battery but actually two 2250 batteries at the same time. It legitimately charges from 0-100 in under 40 minutes, I've tested it. The problem is it's not compatible with any other charger I've tried. Quick charge 1,2,3,4 or PD or even the warp 30 from my OnePlus 7 pro. Any other charger I try is like plugging it into a computer and would take 24 hours to charge. OnePlus definitely messed something up and really needs to fix it soon.

My original observation (and this was confirmed by multiple people now) was that using the original charger and cable, charging speed varies a lot and only sometimes had cuurents for a few mins, which could charge in 40 mins if it would be constantly at that rate.
Your comment about slow charges using other chargers unfortunately is very true. I have tries lots of combinations (chargers for Macbook Pro, Xiaomi phones, older Oneplus chargers and cables from 3T) and the fastest of these would need about 3-4h and the slowest about 10-12h (estimates based on current).

My phone has charged at the advertised speeds every single time I've ever plugged in the warp charger. It charges my phone everyday from 20%-80% in 18 minutes. I've charged it from 0-100 in 38 minutes.

Yep this is the annoying part for me. I leave my warp charger at home. My car charger and charger for work charges extremely slow. Most of the time the % doesn't even move.

Meanwhile I have rooted my phone and installed xXx_NoLimits.
Since I did that, the charging speed was always as fast as Oneplus states.
Weird...

No. Haven't used a custom kernel on this phone yet.
Just tried the 30W Warp charger of my OP3T again after installing xXx_NoLimits and now this is also charging relatively fast. Estimated full charge time is 1:35.
And yes, I understand that for some folks the full speed has always worked
This is the absolute best warp charge magnetic cable I and my friends have ever used. Been using it for years now. Both warp and dash changes and better yet. None of my phones have charging port issues ^_^.

How's your battery capacity holding up after some use with the 65w charging?

Looking at buying this phone but I'd like to know how the battery life holds up over time with the fast charging. What kind of screen off time do you get after 6 months or a year of using the phone?
I've had it for a year and I have charged it with a slow 1 Amp charger every night. I only use the 65w charger maybe once a month. I haven't had any issues.
I've had the phone for almost a year and I charge it with the 65w charger every day. No issues, battery lasts for as long as it did when it was new.

@baxtex
Yeah I just got my 8T today. I did more research and found out they use multiple temperature sensors that will trigger the device to charge slower if it's overheating. They also use 2 batteries in the phone to prevent this heat from happening under normal charging conditions. If it was in the sun or in a very warm room or something I'm pretty sure it would throttle itself based on some of the reviews I found on it. You might have to have adaptive charging on for this but I would assume it's just more aggressive than the regular protections. Pretty sure you could explode your battery with 65w charging in direct sunlight on a hot day. Anyways I think 1A charging is overkill for protecting it. 1A is also not actually not a measurement of current unless you have the volts also. If it's 5V which I think all usb is but I haven't checked since usb-c came out that would be 5 watts. I guess if you leave it on that overnight it doesn't matter though not like it'll hurt anything.
