So how is the moto g?

I cracked the screen on my nexus 4 and only half of the screen response to touch. Now question is would it be worth it to replace the screen on my nexus 4 (which I love) or just purchase a moto g? I am only asking in the sense of hoping that there are other nexus 4 users who have switched over.

The Nexus 4 is noticeably more powerful with graphics intensive games, or when you have many apps open (slight juddering in the web browser, or heavy apps because only 1GB Ram), but the Moto G will easily beat the N4 on battery life with heavy use, and has working usb-otg out of the box.
Mine has been on for 3 days and I still have 35% battery left. I prefer the Moto G screen which is warmer than the N4 as well. If it worth it. Biggest advantages of N4 are NFC, Miracast/dual band wifi and 2GB ram. Kit Kat will also benefit the Moto G greatly as it has a smaller footprint in memory.

The screen on the Moto G is better and the battery life is better as well. These two are the most important for me so that's why I'm moving on from my Nexus 4 since neither of those criteria fit with the Nexus 4 in comparison with the Moto G.
The added bonus with the Moto G is the fact that it's one handed use is so much more comfortable than the Nexus 4. I find the Nexus 4 too wide and even found the Nexus 5 a bit more better to use for some reason over it.

I've had both the Nexus 4 and Moto G.. In my opinion they're almost evenly matched, but overall I'd go with the Nexus 4. It's a bit more powerful and has faster updates but has worse battery life(can be improved with a custom kernel) and not as good a screen(although still good)

Yes I have to admit, the screen on the nexus 4 seemed faded. I just tried to take it apart and it's becoming a project and glass is everywhere from the screen. I am going to order a moto g. Screw it! Lol

I've had a nexus 4. I bought my Moto g as a second phone, I like how it was similar to the nexus 4. I'm shocked how similar they are, it's maybe got less punch on paper! But in use it feels just as good and the screen is far better. A fantastic device that's quick and easy to use. I'd say it holds its own against any of last years top phones & it's by no means a sluch against this years. My s4 is of course quicker, but there isn't a huge gulf between them as you might think. I'd expect this kind of difference from a device £100 cheaper, not £400 cheaper. Truly amazing and can't wait to see it on 4.4 with art enabled, expect your phone to fly.

I would recommend replacing the screen yourself on the N4, then either keep it or sell it and then buy a Moto G (which is what I did after my screen broke -- it had other probles and I was sick of it lol). Even if you don't fix it, people still buy cracked screen N4s on eBay, so definitely sell it.

Bought mine after buying a new screen for a nexus and the digitizer not working, after dropping £70 on a non working screen (either due to a dodgy eBay seller or heavy handed ness on my part) I figured I'd "downgrade" to a motoG rather than chance it again.
I've yet to notice any significant area in which the motoG lets me down in relation to my old nexus 4. It plays the games I was playing on my nexus, the battery stamps the nexus into the ground, the call quality is superb. GPS is instant on the locking side too.
Really... After a month of owning my motoG I can't honestly see any downside in replacing my nexus 4 with it.

From Which Phone to the Moto G?

Curious as to what phone you guys are currently using or coming from prior to your decision to acquire the new Moto G. Please state your last or, if you're like me and waiting delivery of your (ordered) Moto G, your current phone.
Me: Nexus 4
Why? I love the Nexus 4 for its functionality and especially for being in the forefront of the developer community. Until 4.4, it got all the updates right away. And even after that, 4.4.1 and 4.4.2 with their respective fixes were issued rather quickly by Google. The dual pane glass design is beautiful and unique, albeit potentially fragile (as some N4 owners have had the misfortune of discovering). And for me, the camera isn't nearly as bad as some have made it out to me. It's no iPhone camera to be sure, but a lot of the the grievances can certainly be chalked up to poor photo-taking techniques (eg., one-handed shots causing 'camera shake').
But for all its positives, I really wish it had better battery life. I'm forever flashing and re-flashing and configuring new kernels and, to a lesser extent, ROMs in the hopes of eeking out a bit more battery life. I regularly read some users of certain kernels getting 4, 5 or even 6 (!) hours of Screen-on-time ("SOT"). I'm lucky to get around 3 hrs of SOT. I check and try to control wakelocks. I undervolt. I turn off GPS and location reporting. I would like to leave Google Now on but dare not. I lower my max CPU to something less than what the chip is designed for. I even 'Greenify'! All to little or no avail. While the battery is enough to last me the day on 50-60% of the days, I do find myself having to curtail usage of my phone around 3-7pm just to make sure it lasts until I get home. I'm often on the road and not near an electrical outlet for a quick mid-day charge (and hate carrying an additionaal portable charger) so battery life is the paramount consideration. And because of this, I've decided I'm willing to give up some of the things I've been looking for such as 1080p (although I can't significantly tell the difference between that and a 720p screen less than 5"), maybe a larger screen (not that important), and LTE (this would be the biggest trade-off of desired features for me). If battery life were not that important, I would just pick up a Nexus 5. Battery life aside, I've been reading that most everything else about the Moto G is rather on par to the N4. Sure the camera resolution might be slightly less, the phone casing a little less elegant and the memory 1 gig smaller, but I'm not a strict adherent to specs as the only determinant of what phone I use.
And, of course, there's the PRICE in the Moto G's favor! Because it's relatively cheap, I certainly don't intend to be babying the G, when getting a replacement in the unlikely event of phone failure, isn't nearly as major a consideration as if my daily phone were an iPhone or most any other premium phones.
Experience so far with the Moto G, if any: None so far. I'm one of those who has a phone ordered from Motorola and waiting for delivery (via my home in California) out to me in Asia. In fact, I've got two on order -- one for my wife and one for myself.

I had a Nexus 4 which I sold a bought an iPhone 5c. While the iPhone is a fantastic phone I missed Android. So I sold the 5c , bought a Moto G and has £230 left over. The Moto G is great, probably one of the best Android phones of owned especially for the money.

I got it to replace my LG Optimus 2X.
The LG was a fine phone but it kind of started to fall apart and it was slow and clunky in comparison to the Moto G. It just wasn't a very nice experience anymore and I wanted something new for some time now. Wiping everything and re-flashing CM regularly was pretty much the only way to keep it going at a reasonable level.
So far I'm extremely happy with the Moto G. It's pretty fast, has a lovely screen, it runs all the apps that I use extremely well and the hotspot feature works like a charm. That was another problem with the LG, it kept dropping the connection.

I had a Galaxy S2. Was broken and couldn't fix it. And then this phone came in stores. Saved me that money and bought it. Really happy with it so far.

Nexus 5. Seriously...

S4, still have it. The idea was to use this as a second phone but after a few days of using it I'm not sure I'll use my s4 again. That's not to say its a better phone, it's not. But its not as far off as the price would suggest. It does everything I need just as well, the biggest thing I miss is faster downloads. Great phone, a mini nexus and you'd be hard pressed to see any difference in performance between this and a nexus 4.

[Q] Buy a Moto G, or fix my Nexus 4?

Hi guys,
I dropped my Nexus 4 recently and cracked the front screen. The replacement will be pricey, pretty much about the same price as I would pay for a Moto G.
Reading up on it, it seems that the Moto G has its advantages over the Nexus 4: the main reason I am considering a replacement is because even though I do like the Nexus 4's aesthetic, it seems to be a little too fragile for my tastes.
So, just asking:
Do you think I should pay out to repair my Nexus, or trade it in and get a bit off an purchase of a Moto G?

Moto G beats Nexus 4 in benchmarks but most of your data will still be on the nexus. If the crack is a small one, I would get it fixed or buy a moto g and transfer all data. If it is a large one just buy the moto g

Moto G! Much better battery than nexus 4!

I can transfer my data using adb to the desktop, and the rest is backed up to the cloud, so I'm not too worried about that. Rather than a crack, it's more of the entire front shattering. The touch screen is pretty much unresponsive, unusable.
Yeah, I've heard of the much improved battery life, which is one of the reasons I'm considering the trade.
Hopefully it'll be more durable than the Nexus 4, which was noted to be remarkably fragile even for a smartphone.

Repair or replace really gets down to cost and how well you like the older product. If you really like the N4 and the repair costs are reasonable, that might drive you in one direction. However, if you're looking for a change and/or the costs of repair are significant, that could lead you to another choice.

I faced a similar dilemma and plumped for a Moto G and haven't missed my N4 at all. It's been two months now and no regrets.

Moto G. Better screen and battery life. Sure the N4 is slightly faster in GPU but I haven't missed it at all.

Get a Moto G together with one of Motorola's Grip Shells. This should improve durability without being too bulky.

I managed to check out a Moto G test unit for myself earlier and was quite impressed with it. I think I'll be trading in the broken Nexus for a new Moto G.

My Nexus 4 tragically died by Red Light of Death 2 weeks ago. I just got a Moto G and, honestly, it feels like an upgrade. I know it has less horsepower, but it feels so much more polished, better ergonomics (and won't slide off a table to try to kill itself!), better battery life, better camera colours (flash doesn't murder your subject), doesn't thermal throttle and use tons of battery due to heat issues, etc. I even find the voice quality better and the vibration better.
For equal price, I would get a new Moto G. If you have tons of data you don't want to lose, repair the N4 because pictures and work and stuff might be worth a lot to you. The N4 is still a good phone obviously, and I'd have no regrets keeping it if mine hadn't fried itself. But the Moto G delivers incredibly well on everything I give a damn about.

It's wrong. Plain and simple. Use the phone first. The Nexus 4 with KitKat can do 21,000 points easily with completely stock, with overclocking up to 26,000points. These benchmarks does not tell the whole picture, the N4 will be faster overall for tasks, webpage rendering and gaming, there is no argument. Doesn't mean the Moto G is bad, with KitKat and ART enabled it should be pretty good too. Lastly, GSMArena is not a trustworthy source for this sort of things, they've shown that again and again.
If you are looking for durability the Moto G is going to be better and it have nano coating for water resistant, but you'll still need to protect the screen.

Wtf do all of you care bout is benchmarks? Benchmarks means NOTHING in real world use. Moto g to me as I had a nexus 4 better cause of the battery life I get with it even with cm11 I get 16-18 hours with 5-7 hours of screen time!!! I could never get 8 hours with 3 hours of screen useage with a flashed nexus 4....

Context, I was replying to a comment that claim Moto G was faster than the Nexus 4. I was talking from a performance standpoint, not battery life. I agree with you on the battery life, it does make the Moto G more useful.

Just benchmarks is really something I wouldn't base my cell phone purchase on is all I was trying to say. But I understand that the moto g may not have the latest specs the battery life is what makes this device great! Reason why I haven't looked in getting another device(I'm a swapholic) cause I want something that's going to perform just as good as my g with its crazy battery life

What phone are you coming from to Moto X Play

I have LG G4 and thinking of switching to Moto X Play as I always was fan of Moto X.
Have you made similar switch? If so what phone from and what are your first impressions?

I am coming from 1+1 . I have had drop my phone flat on screen and shuttered . Was waiting for for nearly 2 months now to buy new phone ...somehow this phone lured me given price tag and all the goodies it has inside. Last but not least existing customer care.

I'm kind of torn between oneplus 2 and play. What's your impressions on the Moto?

I will only get my X Play tomorrow.

Moto X 2014 (and now, temporarily, Moto G 2nd. edition).

I'm coming from a HTC M8- loving my X play so far.. especially with the great battery life.

Coming from a Verizon Note 3, a late 2013 phone, and I'm pretty neutral on this phone after using it for more than a week. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I guess I preferred Samsung's superAMOLED screen and camera software, and especially the dialer. Stock dialer is just painful. Feels better in the hand though, and having dual SIM (I have the XT-1563 unlocked version from Brazil) is a godsend when you're traveling. Battery / fast charging / camera are all decent but pretty much the same as my Note 3. Doesn't feel like an upgrade but it does the job.

Coming from a Nexus 5 paired to a Moto 360. With the Nexus 5, I would have to charge the phone in the middle of the day to last. With the MXP and paired to the M360, it definitely lasts the day.

Came from a Galaxy S6. So far doesn't feel like a downgrade.

Coming from the S5. The Moto X feels like a huge upgrade. I'm assuming its got a lot to do with the X shipping with near stock Android. :good:

My last phone was the xperia sp but am currently using the S3. Just ordered the Moto X Play and its arriving tomorrow! Cant wait!

I'm considering an upgrade from my Galaxy s5 mainly for the extra battery life, but am worried about a downgrade in performance. Any advice guys?

One plus 2
Loads of negatives with this phone and this included USBC is not main stream so I had to buy spare cables for work car etc. Battery life was abysmal even with the ota oxygen OS update. It ran hot. Finger print sensor was OK not as good a apples.
Overall not worth it since moving to moto x play in so much happier the battery is a massive plus and overall the OS is faster.

All being well I'll be picking up my moto x play from carphonewarehouse today.
I'm coming from a LG g2. Battery doesn't cut it for me and all the services you can't get rid of without rooting etc really gripes me.
So a stock android, better camera and battery should be good.
Now I just need to sell my g2 and my n5.....

My dear old Z1 is dying and I hope DHL delivers my new moto X play asap..

Had an HTC One M7 Dev Edition, now switched to Koodo with the Moto X Play. Everything about the Moto X Play feels better... it's responsive, has insane battery life (not to mention the turbo charger), the screen size feels just right and looks good too. I feel like the only downgrade would be the build materials -- the HTC One has a beautiful metal chassis. Build quality is still solid though, although I'm hoping to get a case soon so it doesn't get prematurely murdered in my black hole of a purse.
I don't game on my phone (I'm a PC gamer), but I am a power user. Even with a ton of apps open, the phone speed is snappy and it doesn't get too warm. I really like the "pure" android experience that Motorola gives. My HTC phone was heavily skinned and detracted from the experience (although it's not the worst offender... I'm looking at you, Touchwhiz). Another thing I wasn't expecting to use so much is the Moto Voice/Google Now features, but it has come in handy a lot. Plus I now say goodnight to my phone, and it goes to sleep.
One creepy but pretty cool feature is the fact that the Moto X Play is ALWAYS picking up on what you're doing with the Google Now "assistant". It figured out where I lived after less than 24 hours, and it tells me what the traffic is like to get to work. I've had smartphones for years, but they've never been this "smart".
I haven't played around with the camera much, but it looks to be pretty decent from what I've read.
The fact of the matter is, most people don't need the expensive flagship phones anymore. Koodo sells the Moto X Play off contract for only $410 including the turbo charger, compared to $700+ for high range phone. I'd argue that specs are becoming less and less important as the software evolves. Unless you are a hardcore mobile gamer (do they exist??), need a space grey chassis, or just like to brag about having the best phone eva, everyone should consider the Moto X Play and so-called mid-range phones like it.

Had oneplus one before, but the software was buggy so I changed to huawei ascend mate 7. Huawei are too big phone for me so that's reason I'm going back for a 5.5 inch phone, moto x play. Like the way moto get updates and it's as near the real stock android experience. Looking forward for the android updates faster. This as near I will come my old Lg nexus 5. The best of two worlds.

Coming from a Zenfone 5 and looks like battery of my X Play will never end. My Zenfone was with an average 2h SOT and X Play go easily over 6h SOT.

Moto X Style vs LG G4

Hi, maybe its to early to compare but since the price for both devices are almost the same in Europe i really cant decide which one is the better choice. Let me tell you something, i really like the pure android experience on Moto but i think that LG isn`t bad either. I hear there are some problems with data connection and touch on LG, and i am not sure if they solve the issue. Then again, the specs are pretty much the same on both, or am i missing something?
So what do you think, from your point of view?

The LG G4 is available today brand new unlocked on eBay for $452, shipped. The reason i went with the X Pure is because LG's UI is ugly and a resource hog IMO. Motorola's additions to Android are minimal yet extremely useful, which i prefer. I also feel that since the Pure is being sold unlocked directly through motorola, there will be better development for it here on XDA.

The G4 has 0 development (at least Verizon and other locked bootloader devices). I love my G4 but she's going back in the box when my 64gb Moto X Style arrives.

I have the G4. So development is dead, if you have a carrier one you have touchscreen issues (miss touches and lag), there is a fix but you have to wait for the update. Locked bootloader... I love the phone but it is annoying to use at the moment. Bring on the moto x

I have the TMobile G4 and a recent update fixed the touchscreen issues. I never had data issues though.
I am planning on switching to the Moto X Pure Edition. While I don't mind the LG UI and the phone has some nice useful customizations, I still prefer the stock Android experience. Throw Moto's features on top of that and the experience is that much better! I am also looking forward to the carrier-free experience!

Good choice Don't get me wrong the screen and the camera on the G4 is awesome but stock is the way to go!

I'm coming from the Verizon G4. While I love the looks, the feel, the camera, etc, I'm just not getting a good feeling that it will ever see a bootloader unlock. My MXP is supposed to arrive in a week, and I'm really looking forward to it.

I'm on the G3 right now and looking at the G4 as my finacee needs a phone and can take my G3. I was hoping to get the Moto X Pure, but I can't bring myself to go backwards on camera quality. Can't count on the new Nexus phones being great in that department either.

Exactly, there's much more to it. All cameras now are measured against the LG G4, new Galaxy range and iPhone 6. From everything I've seen the Moto X Play & Style are not on the same level as these phones.

I admit I got the G4 due to all the camera hype ... and it certainly lives up to that hype! Manual mode is cool, but honestly WAY over my head. However, I have come to realize I don't take very many pictures - I find myself wanting to take more pictures due the G4's camera though LOL. Personally, I'd rather the Moto features and stock Android over the G4 camera as said Moto features will get far more use than the camera. Yes, I may have situations where I am let down or aggravated by the camera on the X, but as I mentioned, taking pictures for me isn't a normal occurrence so it's worth the trade-off IMHO.
Edit: And I've had the first and second gen Xs and seen what improvements Motorola can make via software updates. While it may never get to G4 quality, I am confident they will address what ever shortcomings the camera has (assuming it's limited to software and not hardware)

I'm going to buy the MXP when I have to cash on hand. My last Android phone was a Droid Razr(ancient). I've since been to and iPhone 5s, and don't really like the OS. I've also been using a 2012 nexus 7 and still use it every day. The pure Android experience on the Nexus devices trump all. Add in the Moto Features and you can't go wrong. The Camera in the G4 is better, but if you're buying a ~&400 device for a camera only, you should buy an actual camera. The G4 also had an IR blaster, which I don't believe the Moto X Pure has. It would be nice to have that, but it really doesn't sway a decision for me. I also like the 0.2 inch boost on the screen size for the MXP, but that's an entirely opinion based decision. Dev support will certainly be better for Moto as well. I would also like to point out that the Moto X is actually cheaper, and straight from Moto, so customer support will be better than getting it from a rand third party on Ebay.

Looking at various reviews/pics of the X play, getting at the battery isn't all that complicated. It's not a plug'n'play replacement, but appears to be a rather simple disassembly process. If it's anything like the 1st gen moto g, it's a no brainer.

Folks, can we stick to the topic please. I'm all for no replacement for displacement but I don't want to read up it in an updates for phone thread.

I have a sony z3 compact with a 21 mp camera. It is nowhere near as good as a galaxy s5, s6, note whatever, g3, or g4. Not even close.

Yeah I agree, not all sensors are created equal which means you could have horrible ones and good ones. Perfect example is the 8 MP sensors on the iPhone... there are a lot of 8 MP sensors on the market that don't come anywhere close to the photos the iPhones put out, some are down right laughable. I think the G4 and S6 will have a better camera than the moto x, however I do not think it will be by much, for me as long as it is decent I will be happy.

I wonder how many days after the first few MXP's are delivered it'll take for TWRP to show up? My guess is that by the time I receive mine on the 21st, there will be a couple lightly mod'ed roms to flash.

It wont take long, the play got it quickly if I'm not mistaken, just a few drivers and it will be ready to go.

After reading some more reviews, I'm not so sure the G4 has a better camera. At least not for me. I rarely take pictures, but when I do, I only take them in good lighting areas. The reviews I have read say that the MXP has a better camera than any in good lighting. That's all I need to hear to give the MXP my vote for camera as well as my previously mentioned features.
