Looks like G5 should support advanced messaging feature on T-Mobile. I had few Samsung phones that had some settings in the messaging app. G5 for some reason doesn't have any settings in messaging app that would point to advanced messaging. I texted my friend who has Galaxy S8, who is also on the same network. He can see when I type a message, but I don't see when he types. Looks like it could be working half way for some reason.
I noticed that on T-Mobile's support page, one of the older updates has: Advanced messaging issue fixed (Software version H83010d)
https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-30673
What works at the moment:
1) VoLTE
2) Video calling
3) Band 12 support
4) WiFi Calling
5) HD Voice
My phone supposedly has the latest software of H83020i with April security patch.
Use these steps to set up and use SMS / MMS messages with Advanced messaging on the LG G5.
Change advanced messaging settings
Tap Messaging.
Tap Menu > Settings.
Tap More.
Change settings for Text messages or Multimedia messages as desired.
https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-30606
It probably won't work with all 3rd party text apps. For instance I use an older version of Handcent (I'm not giving it up!!! Screw you, crappy update!) and it has a built in 1MB limit for photos. But that's an app limitation, not a phone limitation. It still sends an image, but it reduces the size. It also won't support the "see that the other person is typing a message" thing.
But again..app limitation.

I have seen the above doc from T-Mobile and there are no settings about advanced messaging of any kind. I am using stock messages app that was on the phone. As I understand, it should just work, if there are no other visible to the user settings. On Samsung for example, there are chat settings options in the messaging app.
It started working: I went to recovery and wiped cache, then restarted the phone. Advanced messaging options appeared in the app's settings.

I recently purchased Sliding Messaging and want to use that as the default for SMS and MMS. Every time I reboot my phone, the defaults reset and I am prompted to set them again. What is worse is that some apps do not give the option to select an app and it always uses the stock app.
I have sent new messages and selected Sliding Messaging to be used Always, set Sliding as the default for all received message, and I have cleared the defaults in App Info for stock, but the stock messaging is still the default for random apps and the Sliding as default gets cleared after a reboot. Does anyone know how to prevent this from resetting and how to completely remove the stock from being the default? All of the methods above have worked on my previous devices, but for some reason, it does not work here.
PS - I do not want to freeze the stock app because I need it occasionally to send videos and view certain MMS.
Every few days I get a notification:
"Messaging not default sms app. Tap to make Messaging your default SMS.."
(that's what it says; it actually stops mid sentence). I click on it and there's a dialog box:
"Change SMS app?
Use messaging instead of Hangouts as your SMS app?
No Yes"
Now obviously I don't want to do this (why would anyone), but I click on No and the box goes away but it'll come back again later. I can't uninstall messaging, and when I load it to see if it has options to never do anything again ever the first thing it does is pop up the "Change sms app" box again, and when I press No it quits.
Hangouts is indeed my default SMS app; it's enabled (you can see it in the settings), it works (i receive SMS and hangout messages through it).
Do I have to start disabling apps, or is there a way of getting this to stop? I'm on 5.0.2 on a 6603 (uk unbranded) and this problem is new to lollipop.
never got this problem, maybe because i disable the other one. try that and let us know how it goes.
Is anybody successfully using chompSMS as their default text app and getting all of texting features on their watch? (I have a Galxy S6 on Verizon in the US).
Following an old thread for this issue on the Gear 1, I was able to get most of the features working. The issue, lies with the fact that the watch wants you to use the default messaging app "Messages" on Samsung phones (which is horrible). I have notifications for the default "Messages" app turned on and silenced on my phone and not showing notifications to prevent duplicates on my phone. I will copy the process from the other thread and link it below.
The best I am currently achieving is that when I receive a text on my phone, I get the chompSMS notification on the watch and can quick reply to it by viewing the text through the notification screen, or when it firsts pops up on the watch face. But if I go to the "Messages" app on the watch to look through a conversation, all I can see are the sent messages from the phone, and not the replies. I am unsure if this is because part of the chompSMS functions are working, or part of the "Messages" app on the phone are working. Either way, Id like to be able to see both the sent and received texts here.
Upon opening the "Messages" app on the watch, I get the message "Unable to receive messages on the Gear. Change the default messaging app to "Messages". I just skip past it to get to the messages.
Has anyone been able to get all of this working with chompSMS? I am unwilling to switch apps on my phone but if you have gotten other apps working, the process could be helpful to me. I would think there would be a way to trick the phone to use two default messaging apps or trick into not requiring one. I haven't rooted my phone but would consider if somebody has gotten it to work that way.

This is what I did...
I uninstalled Go SMS (I'm not sure if this is necessary), and reinstalled.
In the Go SMS :
In the "Notification Settings":
Enable Notifications --> checked.
In the Defualt notification settings:
Vibrate --> checked.
Blink LED -- checked.
In the "Other setting" menu:
Disable other message notification -- Un-checked
In the stock messaging app:
Under "More" tab:
Notifications --> checked
Select ringtone -- > set to "silent"
Vibrate --> Un-checked
Preview message --> checked.
Open the Application manager in the settings of the phone:
Swipe over to the "ALL" tab, and scroll down until you find the "Messages" app. Un-check "show notifications" This will prevent double notifications in the panel.
This should do it. When I received a text, the first time I clicked "show on device", the option popped up on the phone to select the default program between Go SMS and stock messaging. I clicked Go SMS, and set to "Always". Now it opens up Go SMS everytime.
Hope this helps some of you!
Thanks for any help you guys. Much appreciated.

so when you go to the messages app on the watch, you are able to see texts that you send using chomp from your phone? maybe i need to do a reset on my watch..
How do you have the notifications and alerts set up to achieve this?
anyone else have any insight?
I use Handcent and can't get it to work either. The watch always tell me to change the default messaging app. I asked Handcent (through their facebook page) several weeks ago if they were going to update it to support the Gear S2 and they have totally ignored me (and anybody else that posts there). They have a google group now that I submitted a request to join WEEKS ago and its still pending. Because of that, I switched to the default messaging app so it would work on the watch. Apparently handcent isn't interested in helping people that use their app. Perhaps you have better luck with ChompSMS than I have had with Handcent.

Interstingly, I emailed the people at chompSMS the other day and they got back to me very quickly that they have notified the dev team about it (who knows what will come of that).
It seems simple enough. In fact even if the third party apps could be used without being the default messenger, and not show the "make default app" banner when you use them, everything would work great. You'd just follow the instructions i linked above and all the features would work because the stock Messages app would be the default but not be giving you notifications.

I've recently started using Android Messages as a solution for SMS/MMS.
I've noticed that, despite selecting Android Messages to work with my Edge Lighting, the lighting doesn't work when I get SMS notifications.
I've made sure that Android Messages is the only SMS app set to work with Edge Lighting.
Anyone else have this issue?
Any tips or help?

Did you set android messages as the default messaging app?

Yes, I did.
I'm thinking about combing through the app permissions. I've got time to finally spend a few minutes doing that.
Any update on this? I'm having the same issues on my Verizon Note 9. I'd like to use Android Messages rather than stock Samsung, but can't get the message preview to show up on AOD display while using Android Messages. I get the edge notification when the screen is on.

No update here. I've given up on it. I've just grown used to not getting the edge lighting when I'm using Android Messages for my SMS/MMS.
Go to notifications > Your custom message app > *this dialog will be different (for example I use Pulse SMS) but go to "Default Conversation Notification" and set the importance to "Urgent". That's how I got edge lighting notifications to work. There was a new update to take care of this bug AFAIK but this is how I got it to work.
here's the scenario
1. I receive an email from AAA
2. pop up shows with sender AAA and part of the message
3. I receive an email from BBB
4. instead of popup with sender BBB I still ee a pop up with sender AAA
Anyone has noticed the same issue?
I think the notification is compressed to show only 1 notification (within that same app) rather than listing out the emails that you received for that app.
For me I see list of emails I received so I see all the sender names (AAA, BBB, CCC, etc. with one line content detail).
I recall that it's a setting for the notification that you have to change to list outrather than show only one.
Try ... Settings > notification > Advanced Settings > Show notification icons > select All notifications
There a new always on display update out maybe maybe there's a notification fix in there
I can't seem to get it to install keep getting the error
app not installed as package appears to be invalid

I'm using the COMPACT style.
Gmail by default does not have popup 3nabled though, so I had to change this into settings.
As I said, what is strange is that whatsapp or other messaging apps work ok: first popup I see A, second popup I see B, while with Gmail it's always A, that is the very first I receive.
I'll try to get a screen recording.
