How to Change Default Messaging App - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I recently purchased Sliding Messaging and want to use that as the default for SMS and MMS. Every time I reboot my phone, the defaults reset and I am prompted to set them again. What is worse is that some apps do not give the option to select an app and it always uses the stock app.
I have sent new messages and selected Sliding Messaging to be used Always, set Sliding as the default for all received message, and I have cleared the defaults in App Info for stock, but the stock messaging is still the default for random apps and the Sliding as default gets cleared after a reboot. Does anyone know how to prevent this from resetting and how to completely remove the stock from being the default? All of the methods above have worked on my previous devices, but for some reason, it does not work here.
PS - I do not want to freeze the stock app because I need it occasionally to send videos and view certain MMS.

Notification Tone

For the life of me I can't figure out why I am getting two notifications for every SMS I receive. I have menu->settings->sound and display->notification ringtone set to Silent
I have Handcent SMS instaleld set to "Tweeters". When I get a SMS it plays "Ta Da" and then a second later plays "Tweeters".
When I turn Handcents SMS notification, I only get "Ta Da".
I uninstalled built in messaging with titanium backup hoping that might solve it, I have no other sms app installed that I know of. How can I turn this sound off? Getting two notifications for every SMS is driving me NUTS!
Peter
Not sure if you can undo this now that you uninstalled the built-in messaging. If you still had it you would just open the messaging app and click on the menu->settings and under Notification settings uncheck the Notifications option. Now it would seem that you are in a limbo state since you uninstalled the stock messaging app.
You might have to restore a backup or reflash the stock ROM using Odin3 to get it into a state where you can turn of the stock messaging notifications.
if you go into your messages. go back to the screen where you can see all your messages. Click menu, then settings, then look for notification settings.
Anyone have the messaging apk they don't mind sharing? Titanium backup won't seem to restore it. I'd rather not completely undo everything I've done to date.
Alternatively is there a config file somewhere that would keep this? In winmo there was a registry I could go clean manually if needed.
Peter
Not sure about the config file or the apk, but as for titanium it won't restore if you didn't back it up before you deleted it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
U dont need to delete messaging app just open messaging app click on settings go to where is says auto retrieve and uncheck it. then go to handcent goto settings and make sure auto retreive is checked now only youll get one notification
zorphnog: I did a complete backup before deleting, titanium still won't restore it.
Anyone want to back theirs up and send me the file?
vinid: I understood exactly what you said, however I had already deleted messaging trying to get rid of the tone.
Now I am stuck with a phone that beeps twice. I can't imagined that there isn't a file somewhere that can be edited to remove this notification.

[Q] How to set a default SMS application?

I have the Inspire and I used to have Handcent SMS messaging application on my old phone. I would like to know, how could I make Handcent the default application for messages? Right now, I am using both Handcent and the stock Messages. When I receive a message, I receive two copies, one for each inbox. How could I set the messages to come only to Handcent?
Thank you
go into the default messaging app and turn off notifications.
Also in settings/applications find the default mms program and clear defaults.
I would like to completely stop it. Not just disable notifications. I dont know if I am making sense.
When I go to
Settings-Applications-Manage applications-"ALL"- Messages
the "clear defaults" button is grayed out, and I cannot click on it.
the htc messaging app can't be removed and is always listening for a message. turning off notifications is the best you're going to do. If clear defaults is grayed out then handcent is already set as your default.

truth. i tried deleting the original mms apk via adb before and using only handcent. the result was i could send messages with handcent, but could no longer receive anything.
the built in messaging app doesn't take up a lot of room or anything.
Both of the app's buttons are grayed out. By disabling all notifications, would i still receive messages in that inbox?
yeah but as you delete them in handcent they'll delete in htc. The program isn't an inbox anyway it's an interface. The messages aren't duplicated in your phone.
Ok, Thank you for your help and time.
no problem that's why we're here
hey
im still rcving the BOTH SMS
with Handcent and default SMS messenger.
theres NO OPTION for DEFAULT SET i cant click on it..
i already DID uncheck the notification at the MESSENGER DEFAULT
and i enabled the NOTIFICATIOn at Handcent SMS
and i still get notification at the Default SMS.. its really anoying
You need to turn off auto-retrieve in the default messaging app settings. It's near the bottom.

[Q] Sms issues with g2x

I'm on my second g2x. The first had the random reboot problem. This new one is great except for the multiple messages I receive. I tried turning off the notifications for the native sms system app and tried a couple of different sms apps from the market. Now I get sms notification along with the system app notification. How can I disable the system app completely?

Try using Titanium Backup to freeze " (sms/mms prefs) Messaging 2.2.2 "
after turning off sms notification in the stock app, go to the messaging in settings->applications-> manage applications. find messaging and unset it as default, then clear data if needed. should prevent double sms notifications.
Messaging -> Settings -> Notifications
Should stop the double notifications as well

Different messaging apps?

Question, I have GO SMS PRO, because I hate stock messaging layout. I have set notifications disabled on messaging so I only get it once through GO SMS PRO.
Is there a reason why stock messaging still comes up while I use GO SMS PRO? Can I delete messaging, or freeze it so it's not constantly running as well as go sms pro?
It says how to uninstall the stock sms when you first setup go sms but i wasnt paying attention to that crap. its probably in the settings somewhere.
ill take a look, thanks
Use Titanium backup to UNISTALL the STOCK messaging app
Are you using stock launcher?
If you are and pressing the stock messaging app icon then thats why it opens up instead of go sms.
If you are using custom launcher like ADW you just change the icon to whatever you want but have it linked to go sms so only that opens up for messaging when you press it.
You can unistall it but i would freeze it instead because if you do a factory reset and its unistalled you won't have a stock sms app to fall back onto because third party apps won't be loaded right away when you do that. i made that mistake as a noob with the stock keyboard back in the day on another android device lol
Fabricated, I figured I could do that, but I was afraid that'd screw up the phone, guess not right?
It's really not necessary to uninstall the standard messaging app.
Well it keeps coming up on my task manager when I even set it to not sending me notifications. It's annoying

It's not harming anything if it's just showing in your Task Manager. Though you can disable notifications in the native app, the conversation threads are still being updated in it. Think of the implications if this didn't happen.

SMS notifications and popup no longer working

Hey guys,
So my phone ran a bunch of app updates last night (including one to ChompSMS, my default text app) and now I'm not getting the little popup window or notification icons (on the status bar). I've tried uninstalling Chomp and clearing its data (and the stock SMS app's data) and using the default messaging app with the same result. I tried using another text app (Textra) and that didn't work either. Gmail notifications still work (that's the only email app I use).
One thing I'll note is that sometimes when I have a couple text messages the notification icons will appear only after I go into Chomp and open one of the new messages. It only seems to work when I have multiple unread messages.
I'm running MOAR 5.0. Any suggestions? no problems with this (or anything) until now. I'd prefer not to do a reset or restore since I spent a lot of time customizing things.
Update: seems Verizon Messaging had an update that messed with the notifications for other text apps. Notifications for Verizon Messaging still worked when enabled. I had been using it for group messages, but now that ChompSMS has it I've just frozen Verizon Messaging. Everything is back to normal now.
