I recently rooted mine with the hopes of opening up bands (I'm in Canada, once I hit the highway I have zero sevice while my husband and daughter still do, we are all with the same provider!)
However, the codes for accessing the service menu and/or engineer modes do not work. Apps give me messages that there is no engineer mode found...is this fixable or did I root for for nothing and need to find a new device??:crying:
It's not just rooting - the hardware has to have the appropriate software installed.
You need a script to put in in USB Diag Mode. If you follow the posts in this link you will get all the information you need to figure out how:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone-3/help/help-putting-phone-usb-diag-mode-t3571627
However, I will just tell you now you will not be able to unlock the LTE bands you need. I have tried.

Just curious, how much does Optus charge for a outright phone,i thought they were available only on the $59 plan.
Dont know if these are any help, but they will remove Optus voicemail and other garbage :
HOW TO TURN OFF ALL OF OPTUS'S GARBAGE
1) Dial ##002# -> Turn off diversions. It works, but only partially.
2) Dial ##21# -> Turn off call redirect. Don't ask me what the difference to the above was.
Now, this is supposed to turn off ALL redirects (below), but Optus STILL didn't want to give up it's useless services! I had to disable them seperately.
So you will need to:
3) Dial ##67# -> Disable Busy redirect. People will NOT GET CHARGED if you're on the phone, and simply get a 'number busy' error.
4) Dial ##61# -> The phone will RING OUT and the caller will NOT GET CHARGED for useless voicemail, which whilst still apparently 'disabled' from above.. Isn't!
5) Dial ##62# -> The caller will simply get a 'phone not available' message, when Out of Coverage area or switched off. No charge-incurring voicemail.
Now, time to turn off useless services like Missed Call Services, which are redundant anyway.
6) SMS 'OFF' (without the ') to 159 -> Disable 'Missed Call Service'. You may get an error, but just keep spamming this number over days/weeks and it will eventually work.
7) SMS 'OFF' to 147 -> Disabled 'Call Recall'
Wow, so much info. Thank-you for taking the time to post all that. I bought the phone from Telechoice for $679, sold my iPhone 4 to get it lol.
I am trying to remove all the icons an menus on the phone that relate to Optus Zoo, there is so a lot. Also there is an Optus screen at startup. My call services are all working fine with Vofafone sim eg; Voicenail and diversions.
root your phone then install root unstaller you can remove anything

Cheers Mate, really appreciate this solution you have given me, when i can read more info and find an easy way to root that i am confident with i will give it a go. Only been using Android for 3 day's and don't know much yet. It's not easy from what i read here. I am used to the simple jailbreak tools for iPhone for the past 3 years.

Goto settings then applications then development turn on usb debugging
then connect the phone to your pc
download this http://www.megaupload.com/?d=IKMS0QN3
extract it run super one click as admin click root after it's done reboot the phone
you should see superuser app on your phone
SuperOneClick should be done in less than 20 seconds, if it's stuck then you probably need to load the proper drivers.
Download the LG Mobile Tool from here: http://www.lg.com/uk/support/mc-support/mobile-phone-support.jsp
Run it, set your country and language in the options menu and then press the Install USB Driver button on the right. Doubleclick on LGP920 and it should download and install the proper drivers. If for some reason the LGP920 doesn't show up in the list you can select another country where it's available (The Netherlands for example).
Then follow ik911's instructions again and you're rooted. I recommend getting the Busybox installer from the market and run it once you're rooted to get all the proper tools a rooted phone needs.
Adam ,be careful when you root this phone, several people on this board have bricked their phones after rooting it, unless the branding is severely annoying you then dont do it,its not worth the risk.I dont want to be the one who says "i told you so ".
Thanks for the info you all have provided. I feel that i am confident in the methods supplied but will head Bolino's advice and wait a little longer before i root the phone.
Regards to all for taking time on this,
Adam
I thought you could only brick it if you rewrite the bootloader, but that you can mess up the rom and recovery partitions as much as you like, as restore of the default LG rom/recovery partitions would be possible with the bootloader and software on PC...
Is this wrong? if so, how does it work?
or is this an special case of extra brickability with the Optimus 3D that i should be aware of, and not install common root apps like CWM recovery or ROM managers?
(I ask because I'm getting one in the morning, and will no doubt root it immediately,.. then after that ill gain root access to to OS..)
Thanks
I read somewhere about dialing ##634# to do battery test on wp7 devices however on my phone it enabled something called "embedded tool" and says something about passing DM codes via USB. Does any know what this means and if it can be used to help crack the device. Also does anybody know other dialpad codes that might help?

Confirmed that this code brings up the mentioned menu on my Arrive.
Diag has two toggles:
This tool allows device to transfer DM commands between device modem and USB ports
Diag mode - DISABLED (with a toggle)
Auto Diag mode is for PLTS LBS test use only and should remain disabled for other tests.

Field Trial has multiple menu options:

1X Engineering
EVDO Engineering

Data Status
Pulling up the ... menu gives a list with 1 sec, 2 sec, 3 sec, 4 sec, and 5 sec.
I haven't clicked any of the other menu options.

Ok I found another code... ##786#

##786# brings up a Service Tools menu which has multiple buttons (confirmed with Arrive).
Select function set:
{DATA}
{MSL}
{PST}
{RTN}
I haven't clicked any of the buttons yet.
Thank you Layne for describing these more thoroughly. I've just been posting these as I find them. FYI I'm not responsible if you brick your phone by messing with the settings within these various tools. Use at your own risk.
On that note these codes all access the last mentioned "service tools"

Anyone with any insight into what the abbreviations mean? MSL - Master System Lock. RTN - Real Time Network. Not sure about the others.
Also, anyone with a "spare" that can afford to dive deeper into the menus with less concern about bricking? Or maybe someone wants to go play at the Sprint store.
I'm wondering if any of those will allow the USB mode to be switched to allow tethering?

Clicking some of the submenus.
Data Status --- shows the IP Address. But I can't ping that IP (not totally unexpected) but it might be interesting to see if there are any open ports.
Configuration --- shows a lot of phone details. Chipset: Qualcomm 8650. AMSS Version. PRL Version. Device version. Hardware version. etc. (Not sure if any of the details are useful to those with better hacking skills.)
The others all show information, but those two look the most useful for someone digging into the phone's guts.
Also, anyone with a USB sniffer might want to play with the Diag mode.
The only one that worked on my HTC 7 Pro (Mango, dev unlocked) is ##data# it looked interesting but I was afraid to press on any of the options
I got adventursome and actually pushed many of the buttons. Most of them were just displaying information. The MSL (Master System Lock) screen I didn't play with other than to click into it and it prompts for a PIN. I also didn't play witht he Diag mode. All of the other areas pulled up screens full of information.
So I have been researching this stuff. I have found out that these screens only display info unless you know your MSL code that is when you can enter the MSL code and edit almost all of those settings. From what I can edit I believe I may be able to make it so my phone could work on another network. I'm afraid to test that theory out though.
As far as diag mode I have found when you flip the switch on that my computer wanted a different driver to be able to recognize my phone. I have found a driver so my computer now recognizes my phone in diag mode as a modem. I haven't been able to get this to tether the device unfortunately. I have also found a computer application which lets you pass DM (Device Management) codes to your phone. Unfortunately I don't know any dm codes my phone (The HTC Arrive) recognizes. I will continue to update if I make any more advances with this.

Can you post a link to the DM console? I might play with it some when I get a chance.
Sorry, it took me so long to answer.
I have the HTC arrive so...
I've been messing around with a program call CDMA Workshop which is available at
http://www.cdma-ware.com/workshop.html
to be able to connect you need to put your phone in diag mode
##634#
tap diag
enable diag mode
You will also need HTC diag drivers available at
http://www.techwerkz.com/evo/HTCDiagDrivers.zip
I know that says evo but I have used it and I'm telling you it works.
Be warned... if you mess with the wrong settings you can really mess up your phone.
Happy Hacking
Relocated from email discussion:
Hey, great tool[editorial: I think in reference to: http://code.google.com/p/cdmaworkshoptool/ ]. Would it be possible for me to get a copy of the most recent build? I'm looking into some things on the galaxy s3 because we lose the min and phone number on non-stock roms. -C
to C:
Most recent build is .2 which is public.. What exactly do you mean by lose? As in they must be reprogrammed after.a rom is flashed? Does the, normal version of dev term you have downloaded fail to write the number back?
3:39 PM (2 hours ago)
to me
It's a temporary problem with cm10. Development has been slow. It's lost on the first reboot and then mms doesn't work. In android, under status about it lists "My Phone Number" as unknown and Min as unknown. Just trying to see if I can write them while the OS is booted.
to C:
To write a mdn and min typically you would connect to the phone in diagnostic mode.. Send mode offline. Send spc. Then simply write mdn and min from the nam part of the interface.. There are typically three nv items which dev term writes for mdn, and min. Then, mode reset will reset and you can confirm if this wrote the nv item..
Did that answer any questions?
to C:
Having never tested a galaxy s iii I'm not sure if devterm should work... There is alot of chatter online about a program called ets, you might look.for that if devterm doesn't work. Please let me know if you are able to successfully write on the galaxy siii.
to me
We are able to write to it with qpst. I actually got the numbers back, but I'm not sure how. Now Im in the process of seeing if I can figure out how to replicate it. What is supposed to happen when you put it into reset mode? It doesn't work for me after that.
to C:
After mode reset the radio of the phone will literally reset.. Some phones this will actually turn off and on the whole phone.. Some will just show no.service temporarily... After mode reset.cdmadevterm will disconnect.from phone.. There are alot of variables, but typically if.qpst could write the phone devterm should also be able.. The mdn and min are really quite simply three nv items, I suspect the subsystem that normally stores this information is being overwritten or formatted by cyanogen...
if you have ever used cdma worksop or qxdm the mode offline and mode reset is functionally the.same..
to me
Thank you so much for going back and forth with me on this. I really appreciate it. The only major difference I noticed between an nv dump on stock and cm is that cm has a lock code for some reason. What is this ETS software you're referring to? CDMA workshop is a bit too expensive unfortunately.
Although I am not totally familiar with the tool it is linked on XDA in another section:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1696621
I wonder if this might have something to do with the chipset not being qualcomm? On the other hand if you said it worked with qpst maybe they are somehow compatible?
The VIA tool probably won't work since we do have a qualcomm chipset. I still have not figured out how i managed to get it to work once but it came up with the unlock sim message I put in the code for my phone that I Found in nvram and then I tried the spc and a few other things and eventually hit dismiss. It said that it could not connect or something to that effect. Then I checked and it had my phone number as 000-000-xxxx which xxx was that unlock code. Then I restarted and I had the number again. I'm wondering if I somehow got the phone to let go of how its storing the phone number.
Hm. If it is qualcomm I would think that cdmaDevTerm should work... this is how one would normally write the mdn and min with devterm:
http://www.chromableedstudios.com/techninjutsu/howtowritemdnminwithcdmadevterm
Perhaps if this doesn't work you could include the response to the NV write from the LogQ tab to help understand the behavior? Maybe the rom is activating a different Nam profile or something?(I'm not sure if I even have a spot on the UI for that in devterm but a log might help understand)
(for logging purposes you may want to trying writing a fake phone number for privacy)
I guess my question also is: are you trying to figure out why the rom does this? or just a good way to fix it when it does?

I dont know if this has been discussed before or not.
I recently hardbricked my samsung galaxy s3 verizon and successfully unbricked thanks to SyproDazee on this thread Debrick your bricked Galaxy S3.
After flashing the 4.4.2 firmware and inserting my sim card, I noticed that I had just EDGE only. (N.B I am using the phone outside the US ). I restarted the phone and H+ showed for a while before switching back to EDGE.
I quickly dialed *#*#4636#*#* that I had used before when I was on 4.1.2 to force the phone to 3G. When I dialed it, nothing came up. Even *#06# that is supposed to show my IMEI did not bring it up.
I did some research and downloaded the app Phone Info. It has about 164 secret codes but none worked.
Then I stumbled upon this Reply to a thread. by ATGkompressor.
I did as he said and reboot my phone and the codes started working.
But I still couldnt change the network mode.
I opened the Phone Info app and went the secret codes menu.
After trying a lot of them, I tried the code number 2263
And it brought out the Network Modes Menu. There, you have GSM, WCDMA, LTE and Automatic.
Just Select the one you want to force the phone to use that mode.
Also check that your APN is properly configured.
Like I said at the start, I dont know if this has been discussed before, but I couldnt find a way to do it and after succeeding, I thought I should share it. Credit goes to the developer of the Phone Info app, and ATGkompressor.

you can use inteli3g from play store after installing also instal Xposed framework.work on rooted only.
Like many of us, I travel internationally and would very much welcome eSim capabilities. Without ranting, an unlocked version should allow this, especially for folks like me who have MVNOs like US Mobile.
The question is if I can flash the European Version Firmware into my Unlocked, US Version S21+. I apologize if this is a duplicate, but I couldn't find this topic on this forum.
Thanks!

It's possible on the US variant, it's already there, but `build.prop` needs to be edited in order to be able to use it. If you look on the box your phone should display 2 IMEIs, if not use the new Service Mode dialer code to view your second IMEI.

Do you have instructions on how to do both? Edit build.prop and/ or use the new Service Mode? I can only see one IMEI.
DO NOT DO THAT. You'll brick your device. US variant and EU variant has totally different internal hardware and stuff. You'll instantly broke your phone and I'm not sure it is recoverable.
Thanks for the warning!

Modifying build.prop is going to require root, and with the price of bootloader unlocks I assume you haven't wasted money on it either.
The new Service Mode dialer code is *#*#276633683782#*#*. Same as the old one with an added `2` at the end. You'll need the Google Dialer to use it. Once you enter it from there, it'll automatically open Service Mode; you shouldn't have to press dial.
Once you're in all that will be available is `RF Test` until you take the following steps:
`RF Test > Band Selection`, then use the menu to select `back` (3 vertical dots in the top right corner of the Service Mode app).
Once you've selected `back` hit `Network Control` then select `back` again, and the menu should now be open in its entirety.
My steps don't have to be followed exactly, entering menus then pressing back seems to unlock more options.
You can screw up your network pretty bad if you click something you're not supposed to and factory reset usually won't return any mistakes made to the previous configuration so if you don't know what it is, don't click it.
Should you find yourself in such a state, using `NV Rebuild` or `NV Rebuild All` will usually fix the issue, although you should avoid having to do this.

Entering Service Mode and changing settings will not brick your device. At most you can lose access to your network if you carelessly click items without knowing their purpose, but this can usually be solved by selecting `NV Rebuild` or `NV Rebuild All` which can both be found within Service Mode.

He is talking about flashing EU firmware(Exynos SoC) to USA variant(Snapdragon SoC). This will completely ****-up your phone. You should be lucky to not fry your screen or smth+instant warranty killer.
