Difference in AT&T and Unlocked US Model. - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I'm curious if there is any functional differences between the SM-G955UZKAATT (AT&T branded) and the SM-G955UZKAXAA the unlocked version. Meaning, if I use the unlocked version on the AT&T network, will I have the same experience as the AT&T branded one? Will wifi calling and VoLTE be available or useable? There's a $200 difference in price and I wasn't aware of why that is. I understand the "bloat" apps won't be loaded on the unlocked version. Other than that?
Thanks for any info folks!

The us unlocked s8 will just rebrand itself to whatever sim you put in there. For example I have the us unlocked one but I put my T-Mobile SIM in there and the phone rebooted to show the wifi calling and volte settings.

No volte and wifi calling. Also no built in visual voicemail.

But you can always use Odin to flash the ATT firmware to the unlocked device. There's plenty of threads here regarding this very subject.

Sprint + 955FD not compatible, no wifi calling

Bought 955FD myself here in saudi.
Followed instructions to make "cumulative 5 minute call" with middle east/north africa sim: regional unlock.
1st issue: wifi calling available?
Searched settings for wifi calling. Initially something pops up, such as an option but it asked for ?phone number? I dont recall, was too excited about getting ready to pop in sprint sim from edge6.
During this search i was waiting for smart switch to execute bringing files from edge6.
When its all done i see nothing about wifi calling on 955FD.
2nd issue: activating 955FD to Sprint network.
Called Sprint, they asked for HEX gave them the IMEI number, then informed phone is not compatible.
They informed me i could go into sprint store and have them flash the device to place it on sprint's system. But that didnt sound confident. The phone is not compatible but can be flashed.
I was told once before by sprint international they have special sims to be used on foreign devices. But after failed activation informed me the international sim would not work either. I am never satisfied with first tier help/information from sprint.
I am open any advice. Last hope is to switch to TMobile which i read in another xda forum it will work. But i am concerned about the wifi calling mainly.
If you're rooted, then flash the CSC selector and select TMB. It will bring you wifi calling and Volte in TMOBILE, Not sure Exynos model will support Sprint CDMA..
I'm using it in Tmobile.. Mine is G955F

Not rooted. Never tried that before. Trying to stay away from that effort.
Must it be rooted to be used on Tmobile?

As SBR said above, Exynos does not support CDMA. Sprint is CDMA. Your rep was correct.

Thank you. Would them offering to flash the device be worth a try for experimental purpose?
No. The Exynos chip does not support CDMA. That is only in the Qualcom chip. The problem lies in your CPU, not software.
You have two different types of cellular networks, CDMA and GSM. Sprint and Verizon use CDMA while everyone else (in the world) uses GSM.
Kind of just an FYI, in which case your phone will work on T-Mobile, but not sure about the extra steps with WiFi calling (though, if it's on these forums, then you should be set there too).
Will update about wifi calling feature after I speak to Mobile in few weeks upon returning to stattes.
Thanks.
955FD on T-Mobile
After signing up with Tmobile i am 99% all good. Only problem is no wifi calling feature has appeared.

WiFi calling on TMobile requires the TMobile firmware (which isn't available on the 955FD model, obviously).
Even unlocked US phones from Samsung can't use WiFi calling on TMobile unless they flash TMobile firmware.
You cannot flash the TMobile firmware on your device.

Huge question for owners of the S8+ factory unlocked...

So, I use my phone for a source of internet at my place of work. I have AT&T service and currently have an Axon 7 and enjoy free wifi hotspot with it, and it works great. However, I can't get the axon 7 to play well with my gear s3 for samsung pay and a few other weird very annoying things.
So, I want to get the S8+ that is factory unlocked so I can use the wifi hotspot without issue and get all of the benefits of my watch, but I have heard a horrible rumor that when you put in an att sim that the unlocked s8+ downloads the att bloatware and will not let you have free wifi tethering. I have an unlimited plan and already pay for my internet, I should be allowed to use it as I see fit damn it!
My question is this: If I have an At&t unlimited data plan and buy the International Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S8+, can I use the wifi hotspot (wifi tethering) with no problems with it remaining stock, unrooted?
I freaking hope that I can as this would be really the biggest reason for me to buy it and would certainly keep me from buying it if in fact I cannot use the wifi hotspot on it.
Thanks for your time everyone!
Anyone? I am poised to buy this thing if I can use it the way I need to.
If no one else answers before I get home, I have an AT&T sim card I can pop in and check.
These phones shouldn't be downloading bloatware though, at the very most it imposes Network features and restrictions of the carrier you're using.
I don't have any Verizon bloat on mine, but I also haven't been paying attention to whats happening with others, as there isn't very much talk of the unlocked model on here.
---------- Post added at 08:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:11 PM ----------
You should be able to do whatever the phone is capable of without rooting provided the AT&T stuff isn't interfering.
thanks!

I Thank you. That's what I heard, that (with one of the newer Samsung phones that was unlocked) once an att sim was in it, and linked to that carrier, it dl'ed the bloatware due to something with the att network and it also didn't allow them to use the hotspot for free. I hope that the person was either wrong or lying. I got granfathered in due to my old iphone play when I had a 3G (olllllllld) and the hotspot is the only real reason for me to need unlimited data.

I just received my Unlocked S8+ US version that I bought directly from Samsung.com today and I have ATT and I put in my ATT sim card and I selected the NExtgen APN, and i just tried the hotspot and works perfectly fine and I never had any ATT bloatware download, which should never happen with a non att unlock phone.
awesome!!!!! So, the unlocked version you have is a US At&t that is unlocked and not even the international version? Is it branded At&T on the phone, or no branding?
I've got the USA version, unlocked, no carrier branded and I can activate hotspot without carrier check. I'm on cricket

Got to 8 minutes 10 seconds
In this video, Linus Tech Tips reviews it and says that the first sim inserted in to it gets it to download all of the bloatware for that carrier and others have said that once the att bloat is on you also cannot use the wifi hotspot. I literally have the money in my pocket and am going to bestbuy in the morning before work to get the phone. I pray to God that I can use the wifi hotspot on it. Otherwise I will demand a refund and take it back. I cannot have a phone without the wifi hotspot for free. Anyone with att try the unlocked version by setting it up with their att sim? I'm freaking scared right now!

Get a cheap prepaid sim on T-Mobile or an MNVO of AT&T and use that sim first to set it up then swap with your AT&T, buy passing the while first sim issue.

I can confirm that there are no problems with hotspot. I have the US unlocked version. No AT&T bloatware at all was downloaded when I put the SIM card in. I use tether every day with no issues

I'm on sprint. Just activated phone today, and no bloatware installed. That being said, I cannot seem to start the hotspot. Every time I do, its just shouts itself off. Bluetooth tethering seems to stay on, although I have not tested it yet. Any ideas why that might be? Does sprint block hotspot even on unlocked phones?

enable WiFi Calling on unlocked S8

I purchased my S8 from Samsung official website, and the model is G950U1.
Becuase the terrible indoor signal, I have to enable the wifi calling. But the original firmware does not support me to enable because it is not recognized as AT&T Galaxy S8.
I tried to flash the ROM and somehow the CSC changed from XAA to VZW. And the starting logo became Verizon logo.
So how to fix?
After paying a visit to AT&T store, I know the correct firmware should be G950USQU1AQGL. But you could not find it anywhere. So I take a step back to flash the ROM G950USQS1AQF7 and problem solved.
Most important tips:
If your CSC is not ATT and the model is G950U1, using SamFirm to download and flash that ROM first. After correct the CSC to ATT, then flash ROM G950USQS1AQF7.
If you get any problem in flashing ROM, use Odin PriceComsy.
Did you just flash the VAC or HOME_CSC or just the User Files? I still don't WANT the ATT bloatware.

let me correct: even I could see the option to enable the wifi calling. It does not work. And I called the AT&T service, the answer is the AT&T system considers this device not an AT&T original device and can not enable HD Voice and therefore cannot enable the wifi calling.
So the conclusion is, if you want an unlocked phone with WIFI calling, go iPhone!

Doing the above will get the volte working, but not wifi calling on ATT. ATT is actively checking the imei of the phone being used to allow wifi calling. If you want wifi calling to work on ATT you need an ATT branded phone or an Iphone.

Im having a similar issue.. on USA ATT, have 950U1.. cant enable volte/hd calling which they say is needed for s3 watch numbersync.. i mentioned the card swap trick to get hd voice working and numbersync, they claim the system will do a sweep every so often and disable the feature even if you do this (so both numbersync and hd voice would then fail eventually)

So your flashing didnt enable hd voice i take it, in the end?
One att rep recommended going to the samsung experience store and flashing with att firmware/bloatware.. but then another rep said this wouldnt work. Did this csc flash involve wiping the phone too?

Not sure what you mean by "card swap"? You need to get an imei from an ATT branded S8 phone. Call and say you got a new phone and need to update your account and them give them the ATT branded phone's imei. You do not need the sim card from the ATT branded phone. This will give you an account with advanced calling features, that includes VoLte. They will not remove the advanced calling features from your account based on the phone you are actively using. I've been using the same imei from an ATT floor model phone on four lines for over five years and after using many different phones they have never changed the original account. You also need to flash the phone with ATT firmware. This will allow you to use VoLte and it will continue to work unless your call them and change your account to one that doesn't have advanced calling features.

Thanks for the reply.. i thought maybe i could borrow a friends phone, put my att sim card in his.. activate numbersync and maybe call att to enable the advanced features (or is it automatic).. then put the card back in my s8.. att seems to suggest the system would do a sweep and tag the imei as non att and it would deactivate.
i've not considered i could do the give them a branded imei number? how would that work, if someone else claimed that phone then there would be trouble and a conflict..
From this other thread, this one person so far, seems to suggest that flashing with the firmware (verizon?) made theirs work, but i'm not clear on the details on what steps to take to do the actual flash, i think its as simple as maybe some version of odin plus the firmware file but unsure.. they did not do a branded att phone imei number and their volte is working.. i guess this carrier flash takes care of it somehow (but even att told me it would work, then retracted and said no it wouldnt, so who knows).

Unlock note 8 does not support LTE on AT&T

Hello,
Can you guys who have the unlock note 8 and on AT&T network confirm that it does not support LTE?
I saw a review on Best Buy stating that he could not get it to work after numerous call to tech, and AT&T suggested they buy the AT&T version and unlock it.
I just bought the unlock version from Samsung and planning on using it on AT&T, I tether a lot in my car and if LTE is not available I will probably return it.
I am not going to paid almost $1000 for a phone that does not support 4G LTE

Well, I am in the same boat as you. I bought unlocked directly from Samsung and put my AT&T sim from my AT&T branded S7 edge in thinking that it will just work. First I didn't even have data so I changed the APN and got data but only H+ speed at best. I did chat online at AT&T and the first time the tech said that I needed a new sim and I can get a free one at a local AT&T store. I reverted the phone back to stock without data connection and went to my local AT&T store. I told the guy there what the tech said and he took my phone and just mucked around with it and got data connection but only H+. He said it is probably the best this phone can do. I am like ??? But I didn't argue with him and left. I again went on chat at AT&T website and the tech did something on her end and eventually open a case for me. I waited 2 days and finally got an email saying that it is the area that I am in and that would be the best signal I will get. Again what the ????. I had LTE all along in the past at the same place, home. So after 2 more days, I again did chat with AT&T and this tech basically said I needed a new sim and he will send one to me for free. So now I am waiting for the new sim and hopefully with the new sim, I can register the sim with my IMEI and get LTE back. You should probably save all this trouble and ask for a new sim to start with. Good luck.

all Verizon phones are unlocked without the bootloader being able to be unlocked but if your flashing carrier firmware you can go from any carrier without voiding warranties and messing your phone up. The unlocked one from samsung just comes without the bloatware and from what ive read its still bootloader locked as well because of the snapdragon chipset in it. But if you put the att rom on it you wont have a issue and will get all the features including the lte enhanced services and all

I had talked to multiple ATT reps and most said I would have to wait until they released the phone for it to be seem in there system. Since it was realeased on the 15th and the update came today, I thought it would fix it. It did not so I called ATT again. after about forty mins on the phone and many restarts later we finally got it to work. I now have LTE and LTE+ for ATT on my unlocked SM-n950u1 .

I think he said something along the lines of, " It's permissions were defaulting to 3g," or something similar. He may have also removed my device and re added it. He also mentioned that he was getting permission from a supervisor to make an official report since it seems to not be an isolated incident.
Attached is the post on best buy I was referring to, that's why I was scared since I have already ordered it.
But glad to hear it works and should work just like the locked version for LTE.
Getting the unlocked today, will goto local AT&T store and get a new sim card first thing. I will let you know how it goes.

3BRJ5 which is supposed to be a BYOD firmware, Meaning shut phone off and can put a tmobile or any carrier simcard in it and will work for that carrier if have active simcard. As i was told about this and some have tested this.
Not sure the changes.
But I also got and installed mine this morning.
I am on cricket this OTA just killed it for me. Killed Wifi Calling, VOLTE, Message Center Settings all got disabled. You should be Ok if you are on AT&T. I also tested it with a Sprint SIM card and after the restart the bootlogo even changed to Sprint, which I guess is good if you are switching carrier. But it sucks that AT&T can't get its stuff together and fix cricket, since the cricket sim cannot provision carried features!

I also tested it with a Sprint SIM card and after the restart the bootlogo even changed to Sprint, which I guess is good if you are switching carrier. But it sucks that AT&T can't get its stuff together and fix cricket, since the cricket sim cannot provision carried features!

ATT features work just fine on ATT. If your having a problem with cricket, then contact cricket. Not sure why your blaming ATT......
