How To Delete Uninstalled Update File - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

I have manual update set on my phone, but I must have accidentally clicked to download an update at some point today because I've got notifications on my phone to now install something.
I haven't installed it yet and really don't want to. How can I delete this downloaded software update?
Failing deleting the update file (it must have been placed somewhere on my phone), can I just get rid of the notification that keeps asking if I want to install it now, or later?
Help much appreciated.
I did see a post with someone mentioning clearing the recovery cache, what will I lose from my phone if I do that?
I'll still do it, but would be good to back up anything that might be lost first.
Thanks in advance

Yea just boot to recovery and clear cache, you won't lose anything other than temp stuff like that update, nothing you will notice

Aren't updates stored in /data/fota on Samsung Roms? Just clearing cache might not free up the space.

Hey thank you, I have just cleared the cache, but the notification of download is still there!
Was there something else I needed to do to get rid of that notification? I can't find the post on it now.

Installing OTA update file manually

I have not received the OTA update from Verizon on my phone yet. I continue to check for it but the popup screen that says its checking for a new update just disappears and nothing happens. I do not even get the error message that the servers are unavailable. I do not know if something is wrong on my phone with the check new option but im not having a lot of confidence in receiving the update OTA. So I would like to install the update manually through HBOOT and recovery. can somebody please help me through the process? I have downloaded the OTA file onto my computer. Do I need to rename is update.zip or PG05IMG.zip? i have already tired update.zip and i get a operation error and my phone just reboots. I would like to do this without having to wipe my device in the process. My phone is not rooted and is running stock. Thanks in advance for the help.
Unless you want to have random reboots, don't install it. The update doesn't do **** and just causes more problems than it solves.
Where did you download the update from?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
The random reboots were not related to the update. it was related to the cell towers and network. Myself and others that have installed it are running fine.
You cannot put the update in without losing all phone internal data, such as apps, screen setups, email settings and so fourth..
If you want to install it, download the file and rename it to PG05IMG.zip and put it on the phones memory card(not in any folders).
Power off the phone & then hold volume down and power together at the same time and it will boot into Hboot and see the file and then ask if you want to update. Just follow prompts and you will be fine. Once it gets to the thunderbolt animation screen, it will sit there for a couple of minutes (up to 5) dont panic, just wait and it will boot up.
This will delete all phone internal data and make it like its straight out of the box when it was purchased except it will now have the updated firware and radio. Your sd card will be fine, it shouldnt delete anything off the sd card but always back up the card in case.

So there is no way to do this without having my phone wiped clean? There must be something wrong with my phone with the whole software update process. Everytime I hit the Check new under Software update, the pop up box comes up saying Checking for new Software available now. but after a few seconds, it just disappears and nothing happens. I do not even get a message saying that your phone is up to date or no update is available. Is this normal? This has been doing this since day 1. Has anybody experienced this and is there s fix for it? Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Since when does updating the radio wipe data/cache?
I've flashed multiple radios and it doesn't delete anything.
He is not just wiping the radio, he wants to install the new update maually. If it was just radio, he would be fine.. The update will flash the new radio and new firmware... The firmware part will wipe it
I'm in the exact same situation as the OP, but my phone is running perfectly without the update. I have read a lot of complaints here relating to reboots as well as the gps getting worse. So I plan to avoid the ota like Steve Jobs avoids calories. But I am wondering if not having the update will be an issue when Gingerbread rolls out for the TBolt? I don't want to be left out for that one!

Updating should fix the issue with you getting the manual update to work properly or you can just do a factory reset. Either way you will wipe the data...
There is no way right now to update the phone without wiping, sorry...
If you have your contacts as google contacts, once you sign back into gmail. The phone will verify your account and resync your contacts and redownload any apps (paid & free) that you got from the market... its not that bad really

How does the OTA update not wipe your phone when updating using Check now on your phone?
Curious about this as well. Updating via the menu didn't wipe my phone. My firmware was updated along w/ the radio.

Wondering the same thing here.....
One possible reason for some not receiving update Ota is that verizon may be rolling it out to certin groups of thunderbolts at a time. I know they did this with my original droid. But I could be wrong and have no info to back it up.
Mine popped up asking me to update but i didnt accept cause im rooted

All I can say is if you update throught he verizon notification you will be ok. From what I know, there is something in the package from verizon that puts it as an update and keeps most data and settings. When you flash it any other way, the update part is not seen by the phone, rooted or not rooted.
If you are that worried, wait for the update to show on your phone. Updates usually roll out over 2 weeks in no particular order. Also some others said they had the same issue when they checked for an update but they kept trying it that way and it eventually connected to it.
There really is not more I can say, your options are wait for the over the air update or just flash it now and take a few minutes to setup your phone..

When your rooted and accept an update, it shouldn't install anyway. most roms have it blocked from installing because the signature doesnt match

[Q] Location of Update DL?

I got the update i the middle of the night. I awoke to my phone in CWM with a message of "Installation aborted" or something like that. So the update failed but I'd like to remove the update file from where ever it may be. Can someone help me out. TIA.
I wonder too because it will eventually just do it again.

Wipe cache.
Also use Titanium Backup (or similar) to freeze the app called SDM 1.0 and the update will stop downloading and rebooting your phone into recovery.
I understand all this but the update did dl to my phone and it's on here somewhere I just can't find it. I remember reading where it's stored but I can't find that thread since there were 100 ota threads in the general section.
To remove the file wipe cache in recovery.... It's stored somewhere in the cache partition so if you wipe cache it will be removed.

tf700 Major, strange problem after update!

Everyone help! I just updated my tf700 to the newest update which was supposed to be minor. Everything went smooth but upon boot up everything went wrong. Every single app force closes upon unlocking the lock screen. I get a pop up for just about every single app that's trying to start saying sorry the app has closed. Oddly, any app that was originally on the device works OK. I did a normal reboot and then again I saw the upgrading message and another message saying optimizing apps and it counts through the apps its optimizing. Then again when I reboot fully it does the same thing. I did a cold reboot and it seemed a little smoother but then again I had the same force closes and error messages. And still only the stock apps will function, anything and everything else force closes upon opening.
I've never even heard of errors or problems such as this. I have no idea what to do and I have lots of data on the device I don't want to lose and can't lose. By the way I am rooted and I did not uninstall any stock apps. Just froze a couple. Build # now 10.6.1.14.10-20130801
Please any and all suggestions!
Ps - under kernel version it says (concerned about name cancer):
3.1.10-gba9af5

There's your problem...
Sorry mate, but I can't help myself - attention everyone, here comes a rant:
I cannot believe how many people do not backup the data on their tablets! This is the second time in as many days that I read: "Something unexpected went wrong and I cannot loose my data".
If you did not back it up the question is not if you loose it, the question is WHEN!
This is a portable device! Pre-destined to be lost, stolen, dropped, submerged, spilled upon, run over by trucks - and those are everyday scenarios which are LIKELY. Don't even want to get into freak accidents... It's so easy to protect your data now-a-days! There's Dropbox in conjunction with Dropsync, there's Google Drive and a host of other solutions. There is no excuse for having only one copy of important data...... End of rant
To your problem. Before you apply a stock update you have to replace/unfreeze all stock apps. Usually the update just fails if you have frozen system apps - I do not know what went wrong in your case.
How did you update? OTA or manually?
It sounds as if your data partition is corrupted since the stock apps (installed in /system) work, but your user apps (installed in /data) do not. But that your system apps work is the good news! At least you didn't brick your tablet.
One of the stock apps is the file browser. See if you can copy your precious data to a microSD. And I'm only talking about data like pictures, files, video, projects. Don't worry about your apps.
If the file browser cannot see your data you're gonna have to get into the area of data recovery tools - lots of research ahead of you there.....
Another possibility may be - if you can access your tablet from your PC through USB - to ADB pull files off your tablet, check if your computer recognizes your tablet.
Once you have your data safe (or given up on it) you can perform a factory reset and possibly have to reflash the firmware.
BTW, if you did not protect root with Voodoo Rootkeeper before the update or if you flashed the full firmware (as opposed to doing an OTA update) you also lost root. And Asus plugged the hole Motochopper used in the latest firmware version. At this point 10.6.1.14.10 is not rootable without unlocking.

I would just wipe and start over, even if you get it functional again you could end up with problems.
Hmmm - I too think you are going to lose your data here as I can't see how you can recover without wiping if everything is force closing now.
BTW don't worry about the kernel version being cancer that is Asus naming convention. They have been using planets and have now run out so they are now using astrology instead of astronomy which is rather odd but there you go.
Previously we had mercury, venus, jupiter, uranus etc now we have aquarius and cancer......
What don't make sense and I can't accept, I've updated this device 4 times now total and never had a problem like this. Also, I've updated a few devices with frozen apps and had no problems. Are frozen apps really the cause? I can't see it.
And if I do have to wipe, and I really don't want to, will I still be rooted after wiping and is there a way to back up things since I can't use 3rd party apps? (Also, I used voodoo)
It just seems like something went wrong with the update, say something initializing or cache problem, and im sure there's an easy fix.
Please, keep the ideas coming...
I guess, I just need to clerify , stock bootloader, stock ROM, but rooted??

Correct, stock rom rooted. No interest in custom roms. I know there's gotta be something simple, maybe even a chkdsk in linux or something. I just hate to wipe n start over. My files seem to be intact and non stock apps start to open for a split second then they force close.
Any responses guys? Would really appreciate any help.

Yea, wipe, and no you won't keep root on a stock rom wipe. As I said previously even if you managed to "fix" the problem you would be creating potential for lockups/forced reboots. Your also not the first to have issues when upgrading with sys apps frozen, look around the forum, its been discussed before. Sucks, but there it is.
I have the same issue, and I can't remember freezing any apps. I don't have any critical data that I can't loose though. Still it sucks to have to wipe if there's another way.
Stock, locked bootloader, rooted. Temp unrooted using OTA Rootkeeper and did the OTA. Then upon the next reboot, all apps FC. All earlier updates has worked flawless. :/

boy, i can't believe how close i was to actually going forward with this OTA when it "pooped" up in the notification area. good thing i had just been reading xda forums and i saw a couple posts bout ppl losing root and whatnot with said update.
now i am a happy camper on Cromi-x =D
best bet as a few already said is to try to extract your data from the thingy, and wipe it out, if you wanna take a n00b advice, if you're close to the end of your warranty period, go ahead and unlock it then proceed to cromi-x it. i was of the same position as you back when i bought it, not interested in custom roms and whatnot, just root...... but since my warranty was expiring next month anyways, and it had grown considerably sloppy and laggy, i figured out, why not? and i gotta tell you, it was the right thing to do.
hands down
anyways, good luck on your recovery.
I wiped and downgraded to .8 and will happily stay there for now. Maybe until I unlock the bootloader in the future.

If you don't have it download Titanium Backup, hit Menu and wipe Dalvic cache. Reboot. The reboot will take a while because the Dalvic has to be rebuild - so don't panic
If that doesn't do it, I'm fresh out of ideas.
I tried to wipe via the stock recovery, but all the FC's was still there, and what's worse was that because of the FC's I couldn't finish (or quit) the "Set up your tablet" thingie. I always crashed on setting up a gmail account. Didn't matter if I was connected to the internet or not, or if I declined setting it up. So I had to do everything from the stock recovery.
Downloaded the .8 firwmare, unpacked the first .zip file, renamed the second .zip (to EP201_768_SDUPDATE.zip) and put it on an empty micro SD, made sure the SD-card was FAT32, booted to recovery (Power Vol down for 5 sec) and installed it via RCK, Android stock recovery.
Thanks for the tip, though. It might have worked. I don't know.

How to delete downloaded update file?

I have my updates set to manual, but I accidentally clicked on the setting and it downloaded the update. didn't install, but every time I wake the phone and unlock the screen, it takes me to the stupid update to install. it's annoying and I don't want to update in case they find an exploit and root and this update may not enable me to get it in the future.
nobody??
I have the same issue, I'm looking into this problem now.
FYI: Sprint Samsung Galaxy S7
nothing you can do about it, i tried clearing cache, full factory reset, wipe data, wiped sd card. Basically anything you could wipe I did, and after signing into my freshly wiped phone it alerted me that my downloaded update was ready to install...
pretty sure you need root access to get to the updates download directory

All you need to do is clear the cache in recovery, once you boot back up it will say the update is ready to install, click install and it will fail because you deleted it clearing the cache
Done
I have blocked 'software update' processes by firewall. I can make installation fail. The notification icon goes for a while then re-appears, with pop-up, probably when I switch WiFi network or to 4G.
It Worked!
The solution above by *Detection* worked on my Galaxy s6. I had read similar solutions before but was frustrated that the notification remained. What all the other solutions were missing was the part about clicking install to see the installation fail and the blasted notification go away. Woohoo! Many thanks to *Detection* for the complete solution.

i screwed up and wiped ext_sd

ok, so i wasnt paying very close attention at all and was in advanced wip in TWRP and accidentally selected ext_sd instead of cache and swiped the bar to proceed. I had already wiped internal a few moments previous (intentionally) and now everything is gone. Now, i know that once i get home to a linux computer, i can just grab all the data and restore it, but thats about 7.5 hours from now LoL Does anyone know of a way to restore the wiped data table from within TWRP? If im stuck waiting until i get home, so be it, but if its possible to do it from the phone, id love to know how!! Thanks in advance!
edit: nvm, i got home and recovered my data via an undelete program.

not within TWRP. pop out the sim, insert into your computer and download Recuva. or any other program. cant hurt to try.
yeah, i did that when i got home. Got it all back now and all is well. Thanks!
Also proven to work is go to the Sam Mobile site and download the official firmware from there.
Unzip it to desk top and then flash it via Odin.
Works every time.
