Before you say "turn it off by holding the power button" I tried, like 6 or 7 times, maybe more. One of the times, I even had it resting on the power button, pushed down by a weight for over 20 minutes. I am thinking of just letting the battery die out, but I was wondering if there was anything else to do. Especially given it's at 50%-ish, and I don't want an image burned on the screen.
Power button alone won't be enough for a total lock up. A hard reset should do it, edit: it's power + vol down for 7+ seconds.
If it freezes again when I turn it back on, then I will try that. It died though, so hopefully that should help. Thank you though.

IM PUZZLED!!!!!
it then resets it self going back to being unresponsive!!
HELP!!!!
Give this a shot.
Also, could it be a power button issue? And that android screen is the splash for stock recovery. You have to press vol. up + power again to get past it, beyond this you can do a factory reset and similar magic. However you likely don't want this, and on the screen where you chose to enter recovery, you'll likely want to use fastboot to unlock the phone (which will wipe all personal data) and then flash a stock ROM again. At this point i would advise lots and lots of reading.
If it's less than a year old, i would be calling samsung though. If it is a new phone i would definitely do this first. Do not unlock unless you have no chance of going through warranty. Will need to know the exact status of the phone for best advice here.
I went to use my 300 today after not touching it for a couple weeks (been busy with my new evo 4g lte) and it was stuck on the asus boot screen. Tried rebooting a number of times with various button combos, long pressing the power button and all and it will not pass this screen.
I had the latest firmware installed prior to this issue.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Did you try cold booting? To do this, power off your tf. While holding the vol down button, then press and hold the power button. You will see white text at the top. Let go of the buttons and it should boot to a screenasking if u want to wipe data. Dont presss anything and let it timeout and reboot.

I did indeed try that, still did nothing
Right now I have it sitting unplugged waiting for it to run out of power.
Well thats not good. You could download and play a movie on it to help expedite the battery discharge. If after that and it still doesn't work, consider doing a wipe/factory reset as a last ditch effort. After that, you are looking at a store return or warranty repair. If this was the 101, you would have utilities to fix that but we dont have such things for the 300 yet. Good luck my friend.

If I could play a movie I wouldn't be in this situation
It's weird because The only people I've seen with issues like this were rooted or trying to flash roms.
Lol yea you are right on that. Ive seen this happen with unrooted 101s before. For whatever ryme or reason something in the system gets borked and prevents it from booting properly.
Try to do a factory reset, it should solve the problem

As in wipe data from the cold boot menu?
Was hoping against that as this wasn't really something I brought on myself through flashing and tinkering.
If this happens again I'll be doing an rma I'd say. Either way I have plenty of time for other suggestions, just hoping someone has some!
Tried wiping data and still stuck, just tried resetting with a paper clip and still no go as well. I'm assuming it's bricked at this point.

Yeah, I'd return it. Without root or unlock, it would be impossible to modify anything even if we knew exactly what was wrong with it.
Okay, so I was playing a game and evidently it didn't like something I did so it closed the game. No force close message, nothing. just straight back to the home screen. So I re-opened the game and now it really didnt like what I did because it sat at a black screen with the soft keys lit up. I powered it down by holding the power button for however many seconds it took. It vibrated once. I let it sit for a few, then I PRESSED the power button. Nothing. So I held the power button for a few and it vibrated. I let go of the button, ANDROID flashed on the screen, then it went back to the powered off screen (i.e. blackness). I tried it again, same result. I held it for a little bit while AFTER the vibrate and it just vibrated again. Now, when I press the power button nothing happens; when i hold it nothing happens either. I tired removing the battery, putting it back in - nothing. I tried plugging it into the wall, nothing (yet. been about 10 minutes). Tried having it plugged in, removing battery, replacing battery, power button - nothing. I tried power button plus vol+/vol- and yet again, nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions? Sorry about the abundance of run-on sentences
Oh, and FYI i've been running whatever the latest release of AOKP was for quite some time...so nothing new was flashed or installed or anything of the such.
Try reflashing to stock firmware using ODIN? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652398

reflashing to stock would probably work if i could get the thing to turn on...dead battery is what i'm thinking...just very, very weird...there was no bad battery life at all or any indications the battery was about to **** the bed...excellent battery life and everything...i guess anything is possible though...

Simple thought.
Have you tried your method with both the Sim card AND the SD card out of the phone?
You know what? My SR did the exact same thing to me on Wednesday. After a couple of hours it just mysteriously would power back on. I couldn't even get into recovery mode. I didn't have a cable, but I assume download mode wouldn't work either. I think this is what we in the AOKP community have come to know as "jank".
okay, so i gave up on it for a few days and just let it collect dust in the corner of my room. now i'm back at it. i currently have the phone plugged into my computer. when I do, i get three fast beeps which to me means "a USB device was just connected to me but i have no idea wtf it is." When i press and hold the power button, i get the "USB device disconnected" sound. When i press and hold the power button again, I get the same three beeps. absolutely no activity on the screen either. so the phone isn't totally dead, it seems...just can't quite figure out what the hell is going on...

gem miner 2.
finally found someone with the exact same brick i'm having: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1928258
not sure what caused it for me.
Ok, here is my issue. Phone power button seems to have gotten very sensitive to touch. Button does not have to be pressed in but lightly touched to activate it. 2nd, phone will not stay in recovery mode or download mode long enough for anything to be flashed onto the phone. I have to pull the battery out to reboot it and as soon as the battery is placed back in, the phone starts without me touching the power button. Any help would be appreciated.

I brought a sg3 into store once and they wanted to do a factory reset..
well I left TWRP recovery on it, lol
they did the factory reset through TWRP!
I wouldn't worry about it, but it's your phone.
I'll try it tomorrow.
Hey guys,
My phone shut off unexpectedly today and now won't turn back on. When I try to power it on I see the Google logo for a couple seconds and then it'll just shut off again. I tried holding the volume up/down buttons to access the bootloader, but right after I get to the screen it just restarts itself again.
Connecting to power (AC or USB) causes it to constantly reboot over and over, it just shows the Google logo for a couple seconds and then restarts again.
Any ideas on what I can do?

Provide more information for a starter - stock? unlocked bootloader? rooted? third party recovery? rom and if yes which?
If it's stock I'd RMA it.
If not what did you do immediately before the problem started?
try holding the power button for > 2 seconds which should turn it off completely, leave it on a wall charger for at least a couple of hours then turn it back on - I doubt it'll fix the problem but it's a simple thing to try...

Everything on it is stock, no ROM, not rooted. I had just taken it out of my pocket to check the time, put it back in my pocket and then felt it vibrate, took it back out to see it at the Google logo and haven't been able to get it started since. There was one or two times when it got past the Google logo and started to show the start up animation (the four colours bouncing around or whatever it is) but then it shut off again.
I tried holding the power button to completely turn it off, but plugging it into the wall charger just causes it to repeatedly attempt to boot like I mentioned earlier. I'll leave it for a while and hope for the best
Sounds like the mobo is bad. Most likely will have to rma it.

Maybe not. Sounds like a stuck power button to me.
OP does the phone just endlessly repeat this cycle? If so it's rebooting itself do to a stuck power button. One other users already reported similar issues and his power button was indeed stuck. Mash the power button hard for a minute to see if you can unstick it.

Thanks so much, really wasn't looking forward to waiting for weeks while the RMA went through. The button didn't appear to be stuck - it was still clicky - but after mashing it for a minute it started up normally and appears to be fine now.
Did you flash any ROMs or anything previously?

brother the issue is gone, as mentioned "sticky power button" was causing it. read the thread before posting. btw thanks for effort anyway... haha
:laugh::silly:
Hi all. Sorry to reopen an old thread (but xda suggested I check here before making my own thread).
I think we have the exact same problem with a Nexus 5. Unfortunately, bashing the power button doesn't seem to be helping (and makes me feel slightly silly .
Anyone know how much effort it would be to take it apart to get to the part that's stuck? Any good instructions?
Thanks.
Weird, I have the same issue starting a few hours ago. I updated to the Oct 17 beta of Cataclysm then a hour later it happened. But was told it sounds like the power button issue.
Took it apart, tried to fix it. If plugged in I can get into the bootloader, but then it reboots again. I've tried tapping it on a hard surface, and it gets seems like it almost fixes it because it'll connect to my laptop but then reboots again.
Could it be the battery? It was fully charged but then died as I was deleting hundreds of photo's in Dropbox to move photo's over from my phone because it was full.
I too am running into this same issue. My screen cracked so I replaced the digitizer with some success. In the process I damaged the battery and needed to replace it. When I got the new battery and replaced it my phone is now unusable.
When unplugged: I turn on the phone and it's running the ANDROID animation then turns off.
When plugged in: I turn on the phone, the ANDROID animation runs then the phone restarts and continues the process over and over again.
I then flashed the phone with Marshmallow and the same thing happens. Except now that I flashed it I get the Android icon with the spinning gear. So; I flashed it back to 5.1.1, but the same result.
Could I have physically damaged something inside or is it a battery issue? Thanks for any insight.
