I bought a US version mate 9 (MHA-L29), when I rebranded to MHA-AL00 (Chinese version), I had the issue MEID and PESN are all 0. When I checked the MHA-L29, which is actually CDMA locked (doesn't support CDMA in the US, because the IP issue in the US). However I do have the ESN and MEID/IMEI on my box. Is it possible for me to unlock the CDMA by using the ESN and MEID/IMEI on the box?
It seems the FCC has yet to approve Mate 9 for CDMA usage in the US, use a GSM carrier instead. Also, please don't use a phone without a valid IMEI, that's quite against some communication rules.

Hi all. I've just found out about this brilliant phone. Had no idea it existed. I've always liked the Motorola Milestone (qwerty physical keyboards are a must to me) however i ended up getting the wrong version of the milestone (european) with the wrong 3G bands for my carrier so i could only get Edge speeds.
Anyways, it seems like the Droid 2 Global version uses simcards. I live in the Dominican Republic, Claro (my carrier) runs on the 850/1900 bands and it seems like the D2G can work with them, in theory. I've been reading a couple of threads regarding this though, it seems like those bands have been locked out by verizon so people don't use it on other US carriers such as AT&T which happens to run on the same bands i need (850/1900). But others say its the carrier ID that has been locked out. I read something about a user being able to get 3G speeds on Chile, but i've no idea what bands he was using.
What i want to know is, if i ordered a Droid 2 Global phone, would i be getting 3G speeds using my Claro simcard here after having it sim-unlocked?
There's also the Milestone 2 of course, but they seem to cost $500+ plus they dont specify which bands the phone works with. I dont want to end up buying the wrong phone version again. Also, It seemsl ike the droid 2 global is being sold for a less ($300-400).

read the spec
I am using my SIM-unlocked D2G fine here, on a carrier that uses 850MHz UMTS.
The Milestone 2, as far as I know, is still only available in a 900/2100 UMTS variant so far.
From what I gather, the lock Verizon put on the radio to prevent use on US GSM carriers is based on the MCC (mobile country code) number associated with networks based in the USA, and not the frequencies themselves. In effect, once unlocked the phone will work with any GSM provider (on a supported frequency), except those based in the U.S. This would explain why the AT&T 850MHz network (MCC 301) doesn't work, whereas the Telstra 850MHz network I use (MCC 505) does.
One complication about buying a Droid 2 Global now, is that from various reports on this forum, some devices don't respond to their SIM unlock codes (!) and are effectively unlockable. If I were buying a D2G now for use on a GSM carrier, I'd only buy one that has already been unlocked - wouldn't want to take the chance on getting a phone that is unlockable. This might be why some are being listed for dirt cheap!

Wow thats not good is it. Thanks for the advice, i'll make sure the phone is unlocked. I've never really understood how phones are unlocked by third party anyways. But I understand you can have them unlocked by giving verizon a call and under certain conditions, they'll provide the unlock code for free.
I was in the Dominican Republic last week with my D2G and it worked perfectly (unlocked using Rogers Canada service). Claro service sucked a bit (coverage wise) but worked fine (3G), Orange (EDGE) seemed a bit better where I was.
I am pretty sure you will be fine AS LONG AS you get unlockable/unlocked D2G.
ok one last question,
does anyone know if a droid with bad esn will work ok with a different carrier's simcard if unlocked?
I would assume droids with bad esn will be going for cheaper on ebay
bas esn mean d phone could be stolen so it will b a hassle to clear the esn
How can one know if the phone has a bad ESN? Just wondering.

Obtain the esn from whomever you are purchasing from. Then ask Verizon regarding the esn you were provided.
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using Tapatalk
but wouldnt you only need a clear ESN if you're going to use the phone with CDMA? or would that affect GSM usage as well ? (simcards)
According to the eBay listing I bought mine from, it has a bad ESN (at least, it explicitly stated "will not activate on Verizon") - but the GSM/UMTS radio works fine.

Bad ESN will only affect use on Verizon and its MNVOs (possibly). GSM networks will work fine. Just remember though if it's not already unlocked, and the ebay unlocker codes don't work, it will probably be near impossible getting verizon to give you the code for a phone with bad esn.
thanks for the info. I''ll look for unlocked plus bad ESN phones on ebay and see if theyre any cheaper
I know , I know . It's a common question that many people ask . (i don't know if it belong here , it's just common sense ..)
But since no one from the other posts here answered my question (at least partially answered) i GOT to ask this specific question :
I'm willing to buy a Samsung galaxy note 2 (N7100) .
I noticed that many of the phones there have a bad ESN and they are cheap . from a deep search in google and other sites , I've reached my conclusion :
1. CDMA carriers in the USA are Sprint, Verizon and U.S. Cellular. AT&T and T-Mobile are GSM carriers. (i live in Israel , and here the networking is GSM & UTSM. GSM is 900/1800 for my carrier , UTMS is 900/2100 for my carrier .)
2.Using a bad ESN phone in the US is not that good , Using it in other countries that aren't from N\S America Might get you a good result , but nothing is sure.
3.Only GSM carriers in the US will work for other countries since a CDMA cell phone generally does not use a SIM card to to identify and authenticate subscribers to the network (like a GSM carrier does).
So my final question is :
Will it be worth (by creating a fool-proof program with the seller , claiming that if it won't work on my network i'll send it back) buying a GSM network phone with bad esn with network use (3g and calls) and will i'll be able to flash or do whatever it takes to make it work in my country ? I understand android so it won't be hard , but i don't know if it will be worth it . (btw i have no idea what is the flashing another carrier, i don't get it.)
thanks for reading my trouble D)
LiVeBeaT .
GSM phones don't use ESN numbers. That is for CDMA devices only. GSM devices use IMEI numbers which are kinda the sane thing. If a device has a bad ESN then it is a CDMA device and will both work on a GSM network.
Wayne Tech Nexus
ebay LON-L29C636B156, t-mobile USA. (upgrade to B156 yesterday, did not change anything in respect to this issue).
I can get the 4G on the home screen, but never the 4G LTE symbol. And i do not get the VoLTE menu option. I called up t-mobile support and they said that whether or not its a phone bought from them or not, LTE would get enabled if the phone supports it. So i am starting to suspect that my phone (or rather the 636 taiwanese firmware ?) does not really support/enable LTE.
My t-mobile SIM does give me 4G LTE symbol in a colleagues Honor 8 from Best Buy, T-mobile USA does not sell that. Which seems to support what t-mobile support told me. His ATT SIM does also not give me 4G LTE indication on my phone.
Given how the specs of the HW all claim LTE support for the mate 9 pro, i wonder what my best diagnostics are to determine whether or not the firmware actually enables it.
Reboot phone without any SIM inserted: "LTE cell info" app: "3G mobile technologies": Yes, "4G mobile technologies: No", "Max speeds": HSPA - aka: seems to indicate that phone does not support LTE. Same with SIM inserted, no change whether i enable/disable 4G in the system.
"AntennaPict" app, with SIM inserted, 4G enabled says LTE: -106 dbm, with 4G disabled, it says HSPA+.
*sigh*. So the diagnostics apps are inconsistent.
Was wondering what others with Mate 9 pro see.
Not sure what else i could try. Go to european firmware via Funky and see if thats any better ? (whats the number for european firmware ?).
Thanks!
Its part of the upcoming software update. Same was enabled in the mate 9.
It absolutely supports LTE. 4G is synonymous with LTE outside of the US. It won't attach to LTE networks without a SIM inserted because of the way authentication onto those networks is performed. The second app is correct.
You can check network info in about phone.
Bumping here as I have the same issue as the OP.
Anyone figured how to get LTE and VoLTE enabled on LON-L29 on T-Mobile USA...
Also, how do we get OTA update while in the US as I believe my Mate 9 Pro is an Asian Model (LON-L29636) ?
Any help here guys/gals would be super helpful. I love the Mate 9 Pro, but without these 2 **important** features it is going to collect dust on my shelf.
Thanx

Problem is you have a C636 model, which is for Asia region, not for USA. Unfortunately there is no model available under US? This was the same issue I face here in Australia - there is no AU model sold here.
From what I have seen there are only these models for the Mate 9 Pro:
Mate 9 Pro, Europe Version (LON-L29C432)
Mate 9 Pro, Asia Version (LON-L29C636)
Mate 9 Pro, Middle East Version (LON-L29C185)
Mate 9 Pro, Non-Region-Branded (LON-L29C900)
Mate 9 Pro, China Version (LON-AL00C00)
And from what I have read on XDA - there is a "cust" partition, which contains the VOLTE configuration files, which are specific to that regions Telco providers, so not having any USA configuration - the VOLTE options do not work or display to enable them... This is a major flaw with how Huawei have configured the mobile device, from what I read on forums these files are under 1mb in size, so why they have not included all regional files on each device no matter the location is beyond me.... I am stuck without VOLTE option here in Australia due to this fact, and will most likely never get it since they are not selling the device here.
The C900 being "Non-Region-Branded", sounds like this may (or may not) be a winner to rebrand to.. i'm wondering if it contains configuration for all regions!
LTE here tho is called "4G" and I am connecting with 4G and 4G+, and get the data speeds of that, but not calling (it drops down to HSPA+ when I make a call).
I have read on here that Mate 9 owners have been able to backup the cust partition and then restore it using TWRP on other devices, or most people have re-branded to their correct region.. this not possible since there is no USA or AU region build for M9 Pro.
My telephone service provider (Tello), an MVNO that started with Sprint BYOD phones, is requiring me to switch to GSM.
Their customer support chat guy insists that, because their system allowed me to order a new SIM, it means that my phone (which is registered by IMEA on their system) can work as a GSM phone.
This seems... very unlikely. Even htc's web site for the U11 (https://www.htc.com/us/support/?&family=1&product=2) differentiates between their U11 and their Sprint variant.
So... am I right that the U11 does not carry both GSM and CDMA radios and that I have to get a new phone?
Thanks in advance for what may have been a very silly question.
Jeff
Check your phone's "About" settings. If you see a MEID or an ESN category, your phone requires CDMA; if you see an IMEI category, your phone is GSM. If you see both (e.g., Verizon phones), your phone supports both CDMA and GSM, and may use either network.

Interesting. My U11 has both an MEID number and an IMEI number (plus an IMEI SV entry that is '0').
I wish I'd had the foresight to ask this question before I spent hundreds of dollars on a replacement phone that will takes its sweet time getting here.
we have 6a from the USA, used in another county. it works only on 4G with No VOLTE, so we face a lot of drop call as it drops to 2G.
tried to change to sitting, but nothing.
do anyone have fix for it?
Try testing a SIM card from a different provider. If it works, then it's a carrier issue.
Otherwise then you may need to reset the network settings, or try roaming on other networks see if you can activate VoLTE.
May I ask which carrier are you on right now? Also are you roaming or do you have a sim card from that said carrier?
For your case, If you are using your American model Pixel 6a in another country, you can just convert it to the model which is sold in your country, to get perfect network and localisation support.
Please refer to Ziand's thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/converting-japanese-pixel-6-to-global-version.4365275/
For which model you're converting to, refer to google https://pixel.withgoogle.com/5G/
I have successully converted my Japanese model to an international model, but please be aware of the risk of bricking your phone when you are doing this.
