So I've downloaded all the stuff and made my mind to root the device.
Just some final questions..
1) I would be installing Xposed Framework on the device, will it hinder any OTA updates to the stock ROM?
2) If I install a custom ROM like CM, and then let's say Android 4.4.3 comes out... What should I do to update to the Android 4.4.3?
3) What is the need of getting Gapps when flashing a custom ROM? Aren't Gapps already present in Android?
4) Any other drawback of installing a Custom ROM?
Don't forget to search. Every thing you need to know is here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=47369234

Okay searching XDA is the best way to find out these answers, but I'll help you
1.) Using Xposed framework will stop you from receiving otas
2.) If you're running a custom ROM when 4.4.3 drops, all you will need to do is flash any 4.4.3 ROM that drops to update. Believe me, when it drops it won't be long before some 4.4.3 custom ROMs surface.
3.) Most custom ROMs do not include gapps. You'll need to flash those separately. Read the ops of each ROM you're interested in to find out if they're included.
4.) You have a Nexus, they're made to be rooted. Lol

If you're using a custom ROM though like CM, 4.4.3 doesn't really matter. Since it's a custom ROM it won't be releasing an update at the same time as google. It would be whenever CM releases their update that's based on 4.4.3. Anyone should feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though. I'm fairly new to everything as well.
I have not unlocked my bootloader.. And have many things on my device [Been Using It For Over A Month]
I have many apps, contacts, app save files [games], etc.
Will I need to re-download all the apps again? Is there any way i could preserve this data? What all can I preserve.
Also, any Custom ROM suggestion. I liked Paranoid Android, but it releases a new beta like every week... This means that I'll have to flash it again? Leading to data loss every time?

Use helium to backup. We will not suggest you a rom.

Hi,
No need to flash obviously all the new update if you don't want unless there is an important bug fixed or a new feature you want. You can dirty flash (wipe only Dalvik cache and cache partition) so you won't loose your data.

Because it turns into something like "best" rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/help/best-rom-kernel-threads-t2477889... And you will have 20 different suggestions depending of each users needs, it will not help you more.
You need to test by yourself, read the OP of the rom threads to see the features, issue, videos, etc... read the last pages of the rom thread for feedbacks.
So.. I just want customizations to make android fun.. Paranoid would be fine?

Hi folks
I am using ressurection remix v5.4 android 5.1 based custom ROM on my N5 for a couple of days and facing some bugs which are
1. When I change app drawer animation sometimes app icons don't show on the whole page.
2. When screen rotate sometimes notification keys don't appears.
3. Facebook messenger doesn't popup. I can't use when I am using another app.
4. Most of the time when I restart the phone, 'android is optimizing the apps xx of xx' appears.
And some other bugs those I can't remember right now.
So I decided to change the ROM but confused which one to choose.
My need is a stable custom ROM with some beneficial changes and most importantly with no bugs.
I really need your help folks.
Thanks

I had no idea about xposed as I m not very expert android user. after ur reply I googled it and liked the idea. But only one thing I don't want to loose is the USB storage support because I didn't find this on stock rom without using any app.
I've been running Cataclysm for a few weeks now
Combine that with ElementalX kernel and my phone has been rock solid, great battery life (some of the best I've seen out of it) and I couldn't be happier.

Cataclysm rom uses stock kernel, you have to download ElemetalX separately. First flash rom and than flash kernel, but you don't have to wipe anyting before kernel flashing.

Thanx dimi3ye....last night I flashed the cm12 nightly caz I downloaded it before and installed the elementalx 2.10 stock/aosp version. Very much satisfied with the kernel as its giving me pretty good standby battery life though I m using the dt2w option and most importantly impressed with the sound gain option.
But still worried about custom ROM because cm12 launcher still has some bugs. So I need to know about cataclysm ROM what are the best picks of the ROM and the stability.

Your curent kernel will be reflashed with kernel that comes with Cataclysm... Read first page on Cataclysm tread for flashing instructions, because latest version is sometimes just update (~ 30mb), and first you have to flash major, big version (~ 550mb) before that update...

Gapps are included in rom. Usually, just flash latest update, if something else is needed, there is a description.

2.8.5.2 is fine... stable release means that every feature works perfect, beta is also rockstable rom, but new added features might have small issues (usually everything works perfect). I always flash latest whether is stable or beta, never had issues.

This thread is for updates of temasek cm12.1 built by myself. I will be building for hlte and hltespr.
Temasek made this all possible and it is all his work I am just taking the time to build and upload.
V19.3+ root removed, you will need to flash SuperSU zip to achieve root.

Glad to see all of you guys showing support. If I ever don't see temasek updated the version and any of you do just post here and I'll build, however I think most of the time I should be okay. I'm going to set up a straw poll in the include root vs not include. I also could start to use the ota app if you guys really would like that

I will always use root however I understand some people's need for it to be rootless and well, let's be honest, it ain't hard to flash supersu right after flashing the rom. lol.
OTA is a nice lazy option for the USER but I've gathered from past posts in other threads that it's not always so easy for the dev since the OTA app is maintained/owned by another dev and sometimes has issues. Again, we're talking about a community here who is flashing custom roms on their devices. Manually downloading and flashing shouldn't be a major issue.
Having said all that, if i were to vote I'd say:
Built-in root: No
OTA: Yes (if it's not a headache)

hey guys, I have been having trouble with tema's cm 13 builds so i decided to give 19.1 a shot. Unfortunately, I haven't had any luck with the rom. The rom just boot loops after every installation. I have tried with gapps aroma and pico with different wipes with no luck. continues to bootloop as soon as I reboot and i never get into the rom. I am back on tema's for now but would love to switch to 19.1 if I could get some help. Sorry for being a noob, Im probably messing something up somewhere and I thank you for your help in advance!

hmmm.. well I managed to get booted by installing temasek's last build (12.9 i think, the one from jan) along with his kernel. It booted fine and made it into setup. I then rebooted to recovery and dirty flashed you 19.1. Got bootlooped and said fk it and re-flashed the kernel and got into 19.1! Now that is great and all, but super weird/inconsistent. Also, once I got everything set up I could not turn on wifi or bluetooth; is this a known issue with a fix? Also, are there recommended installation instructions or is there a recommended kernel for you build? Thanks in advance for your help and patience with my noobness! Again I am on htlespr!

All I know is that all my hlte builds are tested with a clean wipe and then a flash and reboot. I have no problems. I am using temaseks device tree so the only difference between his and my build should technically be root and ota app. Other than that it should be identical

I want to give my unused nexus 5 for a friend, but it's been almost a year since I visited these forums. I want to give him nougat if possible, but are those ROMs stable? Basically I need a stable ROM with good battery life and that's it. What would you recommend?
I recommend flashing the phone with the latest stock MM so it will receive security updates.
Stock will be the most stable.

Thanks. But he doesn't really need security updates. And when I was using it, I'm sure XtraStock and XtraSmooth were really stable, no reboots and no bad stuff happenning. Also, multi window support would be cool, so what is the most stable Nougat ROM?

Try PureWhite6.0.1 Rom, it is very stable as it is based on stock rom.
I am using it since long time.
It's a Nexus, they're all stable. Some have some bugs, but I cannot consider any of these ROMs unstable, like so many of them were on my Galaxy S back in 2011. Me personally, I use Nitrogen 7.1.1, and not only is it stable, I can't even find any bugs in it.
AOSP 7.1.1 by @Santhosh M is great. Also The Fakenexus 7.1.1 is going yo get update soon i think. it was my favourite rom, but i lacked updates for last month. Right @ganachoco ?

Sure? I thought the N5 won't receive any security updates any more.
The n5 won't get nougat but I thought it would receive security patches for a little while longer.
Edit: Looks like the n5 was supposed to stop getting updates three years from the date of introduction or 18 months from when it stopped being sold. Maybe the security updates have stopped?
They have.
I am also searching for a ROM for my N5. I dont want to flash again and again. Lets say I want to choose between AOSP 7.1.1 by @santhoshm and the LineageOS Rom. What are the differences? For Updates: I think the LinageOS will have an integrated Update Feature. And in the Rom by SanthoshM I will have to flash manually in TWRP each Update? And besides that, one is completely the Stock Rom and CM hat some extra features but looks ans feels nearly the same as stock. ...?
Thank you guys!

The rom itself is fantastic. Great battery life, super fast... Thank you to you and your team.
