Nexus S with broken (?) 3G/GSM

Hi,
I'm having trouble with my Nexus S, and it might have started after installing Jelly Bean (though probably not). The phone is somtimes unable to connect to 3G, and sometimes unable to call/receive calls. More often not working than working, both of them. I tried factory resetting and I also tried my SIM card in another phone (and another SIM card in my phone), with the same result. Something must be wrong with my phone, the only question is if it is a software error or hardware error.
Anyone have any tips? Perhaps how to check if the radio hardware is working (some app perhaps?)? Any ideas on what else I might try? The phone has been working perfectly for more than a year, so it's really odd it suddenly has problems. Anyone had similar problems?
Thanks in advance!
1. Are your NS is rooted...??
2. did you try another JB Custom Rom..???
or
3. is it still working good when you downgrade to ICS or other ICS Custom ROM...???
Then, if thats way still have same result, its might be hardware problem.

I rooted it yesterday to be able to try custom roms (tried Cyanogenmod 9). Same problem. I then returned it to stock, which made it reflash everything, and still the same problem. I'm starting to believe it's a hardware error. Are there any diagnostic tools available to check the radio module?
Thanks for answering!

Well, just try a radio that's for your model, search for nexus s radios in xda you should be able to find a thread which has all The radios, and choose appropriately.

Maybe you have to get the correct access point name from your provider. If I do a clean flash I have to input it by hand as otherwise I cannot connect as well.

Thanks everyone for all tips, help and suggestions! I ended up replacing my Nexus S (a... questionable reseller bought it for $120, maybe to use for spare parts for other phones becuase I told him about the problems I was having) with a used Galaxy Nexus. Must have been a hardware error.
Sorry for the late reply/checkback!

[Q] Unrecognized SIM card

Hey guys,
So I got a quite annoying problem and I already spent quite some time searching the forums and google without results. Either the solutioins didn't work or the cases I found were unsolved.
Anyway, here is the story.
I have a xperia tipo (st21i) and I rooted it and unlocked the bootloader and flashed several kernels and roms to find the one I'm most comfortable with.
I used: CM 10.0, paranoid android, super jelly bean and performa v4 in case this is of any interest.
I decided to go with cm 10.0 and it worked fine until after one reboot suddenly my SIM card was unrecognized and it said I should restart the phone with a valid SIM card. I flashed different ROM's and went back to stock now but the problem persists. I really ran out of ideas and since I'm not really skilled and rich of knowledge beyond the point of flashing and the rough structure of android I'm a bit helpless here.
Any help is really appreciated and thanks in advance
P.S.: first post
I don't know if it would work but you can try it
Try flashing ics ftf it should work fine..
follow this may work
first flash the original .ftf file then flash cm10 :fingers-crossed:
This happened to me aswell, but it was a while ago, when I wasn't even rooted yet. Went to the shop to ask about it from them and they said SIMs can go outdated or something.. They gave me a new one and it was fixed. But if you decide to ask them about this, make sure you are on stock ROM and locked bootloader, also unrooted. Because if not, your device isn't under warranty, and they can blame it on that

So you are saying it's due to my SIM? It still works perfectly fine in my other phone (a samsung galaxy xcover s5690). The phone was used when I got it and I don't have any receipt or anything so I don't have warranty on my phone anyway right? Should I still visit a shop?
I also tried ICS and it didn't work either. I got the ftf file from that link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-j-e/development/rom-official-st21a-america-firmwares-t2302630
I tried flashing different kernels and roms already even after it refused to take my SIM but nothing helped. It didn't fell down or anything so I don't think anything went loose inside. Could it still be due to hardware failure?
heeey
I got almost the same problem
few weeks ago i found this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-j-e/development/sony-xperia-tipo-dual-t2594389
about making custom roms works tipo dual by making it 1 sim not 2 well its ok with me so i used it and all was perfect
custom rom - working gsm - fast - smooth like i dont need anything else
but yesterday well my annoying gf was spamming calls while i was sleeping so i turned airplane mode On
then after i wake up i turned it off and suddenly the device can't recognize the sim any more the same problem this dude got
so i tried everything like tryin to swap the sim place - installing new rom - restore my old stock rom - hard reset - testing the sim - so i tried installing the last update stock ftf which is 11.0.A.6.5 i think it's like this using flash tools anyway it worked and the problem is solved now the phone is workin with no problems u should try it

OMG WiFi

Wi-Fi has gotten really annoying. Works fine on stock and DID work fine on Alliance but now it mysteriously stopped working on anything but the Stock slot on safestrap. Sure I want to fix it but I am truly curious why it stopped working on Alliance when it did before....even a reflash doesn't help.

Software is not intermittent. Seeing as how its unique to your device, I'd say its your device or your particular installation. You should check that you have a proper clean installation. Check the tips and posts in the ROM thread you are using.

im not sure if it is the same, but when i had an s4 with safestrap on it i had to flash the kernel modules along with the rom otherwise WIFI and other things would not work. COuld it possibly be something like this?
You make a good point. I can certainly give that a try again, but I remain a bit confused as to why in the case of Alliance, WiFi used to work but doesn't any more especially because I reflashed from the same zip file of the same SD Card onto the same phone.

You have to flash the kernel module every time you do a new flash, even if it is the same ROM. If you didn't flash the kernel module in the same session this last time you flashed Alliance, that would be why your WiFi is not working.

Success: G900F rom on G900V S5

Hi!
First I want to thank the developers and Goldie and Hashcode. I could not thank us topics because I am newbie here.
My wife bought a Galaxy S5 of a person who did not disclose that it was the 900V version, and only possessed a few languages.
Tried my best to translate or to enable more languages, all without success.
I managed to do the following to resolve the problem, and it can serve other people from other languages that are at hand with this device, since the installed rom (AllianceRom) has support for multiple languages. The phone now appears like a 900F.
1) I root with https://towelroot.com/ towelroot
2) I copied this file from AllianceRom to the microSD card. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2716535
3) I installed the following safestrap this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2793891
4) I enabled a custom rom 1 using the default options.
5) I installed the rom usually at recovery.
6) I waited a few minutes, booted, and FINALLY got to choose the option Brazilian Portuguese.
caveats:
Do not know if it's bug or something the ROM installing a rom that is not the phone itself, but the device does not turn off. He gets the LED on the physical and lighted keys and switches itself off. I have to take off and put the battery back.
If I had to fix something, which will not do out of sheer laziness, would change the standard sizes of custom rom, because I never want to see the original rom from Verizon. The custom rom ended up with little virtual space.
Sorry for the english but blame Google Translator!
If you look at the alliance thread a lot of people are having problems installing on a rom slot I used the stock slot and no problems

Umm no I'm on the 900V?
I just read in step#4 that he put it on a rom slot I've read that people are having problems when they use a rom slot instead of the stock slot and thought that might help no clue? I was just suggesting that by installing it on the stock slot might fix the following problems.
4) I enabled a custom rom 1 using the default options.

Alright so I thought I would shed a little light on this. I saw this thread a few days ago and decided to test this for myself. I have a verizon version of the S5 and the 900f version of the rom installed fine in the stock rom slot. The only issue at first was the keyboard was chinese. I had to activate the English one and things were fine. All the customization stuff works. I've basically tested everything and have been using it constantly for a few days now. So it does work. I haven't tried any other 900f roms yet.

I would like to thank you all, specially amonteiro, only a Brazilian would need insert Portuguese language inside a Verizon Galaxy S5.

hey could you let me know how you did this? did you flash the stock rom via odin? Did it not fail when trying to write the aboot? im trying to get ANY stock rom whether it be G900A/I/T/F onto my G900P
bug??
I think it's the the phones themselves. I have tried many custom roms and they all have worked but when I us a rom slot that isn't stock my g900v won't shut off either and I have to take the battery out. I even put a non rooted rom on every rom slot and none would shutoff other than stock slot.

G900TUVU1DOB1 ROM on G900V
I switched to T-Mobile from Verizon a couple months ago and kept my G900V to use on the T-Mobile network. I kept having apn issues with the Verizon (KK and 5.0) based rom and decided to flash in recovery the Beanstown 4.4.2 G900T rom and had great success . If you want KK I can confirm that both Beanstown 4.4.2 G900T and G900F roms work on the G900V kernal if installed on recovery (wipe everything first). I now am using [ROM]ViSiON-X US TMO[Android L 5.0][G900TUVU1DOB1][02-18-15] rom flashed by the installation method for the Verizon Lollipop to Keep Root. Steps are full wipe in recovery, flash rom in recovery (CANNOT, I REPEAT CANNOT HAVE AROMA), flash Verizon OA8 5.0 with Odin, boot 10 min wait... I believe any stock lollipop rom can be flashed, probably anything without Aroma... I have working Wifi-Calling feature, working Volte, everything works but no Wanam yet bummer...
This is excellent.
Question: Were you on 4.4.4 when you installed AllianceROM?, because it now has the 5.0 version, so I am wondering if i should update to stock 5.0 first and then use your method?, or maybe on 5.0 the method won't work? (towelroot, safestrap)
Thanks
Update:
I went back to 4.4.4, rooted, flashed the rooted Lollipop, but now safestrap won't load because it's Kitkat safestrap, so I can't manage to flash Alliance, any solution?
Flash the 4.4.2 stock kernel in Odin. Safestrap only works on kk kernel, then flash back to 5.0. Same instructions used in the forum to upgrade to Verizon 5.0, you just need to switch back and forth with the Verizon version of kk and lollipop kernels through Odin to access Safestrap.
Edit: Flash the visionx tmobile rom, it's amazing.

It just need to be done with safestrap recovery (You can not use Odin)
As always make a full backup up of your current rom before flashing anything. Wipe the system, data and cache and flash away. I've flashed g900t, g900f and i think some g900a Roms work as well... Can't remember. You will probably have issues if you still have a Verizon Sim card. And yes, WiFi calling will be there

[Q] D850 but now on T-mobile how hard is it to get CM11/12

As the title says, I am on T-mobile now with my D850. My phone is currently unlocked and rooted using stock rom.
the last phone i flashed a custom rom was with my htc one x and frankly i forgotten all the little details and never bothered because it took a lot of time. i know i need bootloader unlocked to install a custom recovery to flash the rom then back up, install gapps, etc etc. I don't have time or the patience to relearn everything.
I got interested in learning that CM11 is available and i checked out the CM website and was surprised to hear all i have to do is install the installer on both my phone and PC and boom, everything else is automated. This is what i want to try. Here are my questions:
- do i have to manually install any apn, radio, etc. things of that nature to get the proper t-mobile network signal for voice, LTE data, and text messaging?
- is an official D850 released so that once i install, i can simply keep up to date into CM12 via automatic updates through the software? (one click update OTA)
- do i need to make a titanium back up or will all my apps and settings stay when i flash CM?
I appreciate any and all answers. I have not unlocked bootloader via bump yet. but my main worry is will i have to custom install/input all the t-mobile apn and radios because that will require me to manually find and install and risk messing things up.

You just need to install Bump! And a backup is recommended in case something goes wrong, as far as connecting to tmobile all you need is the APN, i have a D850 and i live in mexico and CM11 and 12 work fine with just the apn, also everything will get wiped except for pics and music if you dont wipe internal storage

errr i am not comfortable with adb to install bump! would the automated installer on pc and phone do all this for me? i guess i can try? i just love how CM installer does everything for you. also thanks for confirming all i need to do is input the APN which i'm familiar with when i had switched to t-mobile after i had unlocked my phone. lastly will i have to install gapps separately? Thank you so much, i wish i didn't have to use adb to bump!

Dont need to use adb, just download flashify from the play store, does it all by itself, very easy, the automated installer is just for the rom, you need a recovery first, the gapps should be installed at the same time as the rom, but ive never used the auto installer, i would flash it with the recovery, i like to things manually
Just to let you know that with every AOSP ROM with a T-Mobile Sim you will get a kernel panic if using LTE. I have the D850 but using a T-Mobile Sim. I have to have it on 3g instead of LTE. No ones been able to figure it out I'm guessing because there is only one or two of us using a T-Mobile Sim with this phone. Bummer huh

May ruin other ROMS after this

Well then have you thought of changing carriers? It is a d850 for Att ..... Does it kernel panic on stock Roms ? You might just be **** out of luck cause I'm pretty sure everyone here uses Att. I use straight talk with no issues. You have slim choices..... Change carriers. .... Quit using T-Mobile if you are unhappy with the custom ROM and LTE kernel panics. Or buy a T-Mobile g3..... Lol suck eh... But just telling you what you need to hear.
Or maybe if you are ballsy try to see if a Dev for T-Mobile can help you with this cause I'm thinking that may be your beat bet cause none of us use T-Mobile.:beer:
