Kernel necessary for upgrade from Stock-ROM to CM? - Samsung Galaxy S II Plus

Hello,
question like in the title, because some years ago, as I rooted/unlocked my SG II (not plus!) and installed CM, I had to flash a kernel or something. I also had Stock-ROM 4.2.2. Don't remember exactly.
Now I want to install a Custom ROM like CM 12.1 (andixlm) or CM 13 (GHsR), which ones are recommended for more functions and better performance.
If I have to flash a kernel, which one are good ones?
Thank you
Any other useful hints very welcome!

A custom kernel isn't necessary to upgrade from stock rom to custom rom. However there are 2 custom kernel Nebula one (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2746991&page=15) and Mosh one (https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2615010&page=58). I really like the first, because it has a lot of governors, schedulers and features. Lastly CM13 has more feature of CM12, but it's less stable, so choose what you like.

[Q] sgs custom rom

does it matter what kernel version you have to install a custom rom
Yes, but most custom ROMs usually come with a kernel or give details in their thread what kernels are recommended.

Best for stock rom?

So, I would be on a custom ROM but I really like the battery life I have now. So im wondering what are the best things I can do on stock rom Thanks
1. Install a custom kernel (faux or Aero for now)
2. Xposed installer for some tweaks in the UI ( ART doesnt work then)
3. Maybe try tweaky Rom (using it myself cause stock is best) or nexus g+ Rom Version 009, because they are both stock based ( in nexus g+ Rom only 009 stock based, the others gpe based )

Best rom

Hello guys, I'm currently using stock 5.0.2, is there any other rom that will perform better?
Is cm12.1 stable enough?
Until right now, 5.0.2 stock has given me the best performance. I used a couple of Roms and they all have amazing features. But stock is stable, fast, multitasking is simply working for me (note I'm using the EU optimized stock version), I can use xposed with no issues.
I suggest you to give them a try, I liked Blisspop features a lot, and other Roms are also amazing
There are piles of ROMs out there for this phone and some you will like better then others so I would recommend to try some out. Also cm 12.1 seems to be fairly stable.

Boeffla Kernel Last Version x Stock Kernel

Hi guys...
I'm with Gnabo ROM, and I'm with stock kernel for a long time.
I remember that Boeffla kernel made my tablete more fast times ago when I installed that....
Now I'm thinking about to install the Boeffla kernel again...
Does this custom kernel have some missing thing if compared to stock kernel?
I'm asking this because If I need to come back to stock kernel I will have to flash a stock ROM again, and after to flash the Gnabo ROM again, and after to download and to configure all my apps...
So... I'm here asking for your opinions about this comparisson.
Thank you!

[Q] Best ROM for now?

Hi,
Can you recommend fast/stable Nugat ROM and kernel?
I know, that I should test but I want to make smaller list to test and choose the best compilation
Unofficial Pure Nexus
Try EuclideanOS with bluespark kernel
DarkRom is awsome! People are also recomending it with Bluespark kernel
LineageOS is big right now
