Buggy Notification Pane During Calls - HTC U11 Questions & Answers

It is very difficult for me to swipe down the notification pane during a phone call. I cannot use a swiping gesture...I have to pull it down ALL the way for it to stay open.
Is it just me? I'm fully stock (for now...)

I noticed this yesterday myself but I am on venom rom myself

Same here on fully, unrooted stock

Could you try using the edge sensor. I don't have a U11 yet, but was wondering if this is an option.

This has always been the case, on my old M8 it was like this since the beginning, I believe. It's probably be design. My guess is that it should make less likely to pull it down by mistake in case the screen remains on despite the proximity sensor (it does happen) and you touch the screen with the side of your head, but I also find it more of an annoyance than anything else...

If that's the case, it should be disabled when speakerphone is active.

[Q] Major problems with Sensation screen

Having problems with the touch screen on my sensation and this has now happened on my secound phone! both phones were ok out of box but after a few days first noticed problems from lockscreen as phone would not always unlock when draging app icon into circle then slowly geting worse until would take several swips on screen to even unlock! then started noticing similar problems in norm opperation? sometimes works ok but some times freezes up have tried factory reset and no differance. very strange having this problem on two phones?
Does the touch screen stop working completely?
Mine did that on Monday, had to get a replacement.
it seams to stutter once awake works slightly better? but still not responsive
I've noticed that the proximity sensor and gyroscope are being used aggressively to filter accidental screen presses.
For example, if I place my sensation flat on a table, the lock screen is very hard to unlock. If i place my other hand near the proximity sensor at the same time (or tilt the phone towards me) it unlocks easily. Until I identified this functionality I was beginning to think my right index finger was unsuitable for touch screens (since when placed on a table I tend to use my right hand, but otherwise use my left to unlock).
Hopefully this will be tweaked with future updates.

Many thanks I hope itd that simple?
I am having the exact same problem, for example on the lock screen I would swipe up but the ring will move slightly, and one icon I.e the camera icon will move towards the ring, another grip which is buggin me is that it will miss screen taps, I.e when texting or clicking an icon one tap will go unnoticed by the device resulting in either a missed letter, or the app not opening. This also goes for the 4 command buttons at the bottom, it happens on these too. I also get the occasional lock up.
Factory reset did not work
All of you are you using Sense, and no other launcher?

I am currently using launcher pro, but even using the htc stock launcher the problem still arises. When I did a factory reset, the problem was still apparent when entering my pin number for the first time.

As I stated before, I experience this problem but it only occurs when the phone is laid flat and my hands are well away from the proximity sensor at the top left of the screen. I can say that the part you are describing with the lock screen is 100% the same problem I come across in certain situations.
Please test to see if the problem is still present when the phone is tilted in your hand and, if you are laying the phone flat when you experience the problem, try putting your other hand near the proximity sensor when you try to unlock.
If this happens as I describe then it is most likely a software bug which only affects users who have particular phone use habits.
Saying that, as you are having quite severe symptoms, during general use, it may be that you have a faulty proximity sensor in your phone - leading to missed screen taps when the phone thinks you are not touching the phone.
Well I laid the phone flat and unlocked it no less than 20 times, each worked flawlessly no problems at all..... Seems to have me baffled
Yes I've been having the same problem. First noticed it when trying to unlock it (phone was lying down), couldn't get the circle to move. Have had one complete touch-freeze. No input possible, however volume and power button worked. Took the battery out, restarted, and it worked fine.
I notice that input can be difficult sometimes, hit and miss or just have to push harder. Strange. Seems like a software issue to me.
edit: just had the same issue - circle wouldn't move. After picking the phone up I was able to unlock it, however still not as easy as it should be, a bit jerky.
Both my evo and my g2 had a grounding issue, for example if I had the phone laying down on the couch or bed, the screen would not respond to touch but if touch the phone with a finger and try to unlock it with my other hand it would work normally. So it seems to be a common problem with some HTC devices

The wildfire (my friend's got one) has this problem too. You have to keep touching the metallic housing for it to detect any taps.
You are correct, aim1126. I never considered grounding to be the cause but after re-testing it clearly is.
I guess it is a side effect of having a conductive unibody. So basically there will be no software fix, we just have to keep constant contact between our hands and the unibody. I wonder whether a rubber bumper would actually make this problem worse?
Edit:
Actually, the screen seems to adapt to not being grounded properly after a couple of presses. It works fine for me by the third time I touch the screen - weird. Well at least it is only a minor annoyance!

My wife uses a G2 and I wouldnt call it a grounding "issue" honestly seems like more of a feature to make sure you ment to engage the screen.. Its kinda cool IMO
As far as the screen being laggy this sucks since I wanted to upgrade from my Vibrant to the Sensation.. I also am not sure its a software issue you guys are having.. I am running Sense 3.0 with gingerbread on the G2 and it is very smooth.. The option to silence a call or tirning on speaker phone by turning the phone over is neeto torpedo..
I'm having the same issue, from lock screen I drag the circle up and it just stutters. After a few tries it usually works, once unlocked the touch screen appears to work fine. I'd expect the issue would continue after unlock if it was a hardware issue.

I made a video about the issue here, where you can see that the touchscreen problems do indeed persist after unlocking. Especially when typing and scrolling.

That's very bad. Flaky lock screen is not good, and the example of not being able to scroll through apps without it running one is a killer. There are many times when scrolling through a list of selectable items is necessary.
Are you going to exchange the phone?
Have my hopes set on the Sensation, so would really like to find out what the resolution is.

SAGA LBC Mod 0.5.4 - screen locked during phone calls

Hi,
I have been using SAGA LBC MOD v0.5.4 for a few days. Beside a problem with WPA Enterprise WiFi connection (reported in a separate post), I observe another annoying issue. When I am in a phone call (no matter if I called or received one), I am not able to get back from "screen off" until the call is finished. This means that I have no chance to stop an accidental phone call, once the screen is locked. This is really annoying.
Can anyone confirm such a behavior and found a remedy for it?
Thanks,
/Adam

when in call on this ROM I don't believe that the screen is locked, I believe what happens is that in an attempt to save battery the proximity sensor detects when it thinks you are holding the phone to your head and blacks out the screen, at least that what happens on mine, when I move the phone away from my head the screen lights.
Do you have a screen protector? if you do then it probably covers the sensor, which is to the left of the led at the top of screen, you can try cutting a small hole in the protector
Swyped from HTC Desire S using XDA Premium
Yes, I have screen protector and it seems it covers the proximity sensor. I will give it a try. Thanks!
This is normal behavior in this mod..
What do you mean by "normal behavior in this mod"?
The fact that if you move the phone away from head, the screen is still black (off) and cannot be restored even by clicking the power button? To me, this seems to be a bug, unless it is caused by a screen protector covering the sensor.

This is not behaviour and I've been on that mod since it's first version to it's most recent
On my device, without a screen protector it takes a second or so for the screen to light once the phone is removed from head but out always does

Screen wont turn off when in a call...

My Shift is not shutting off the screen like it should while in a call. I am sure this is draining my battery quicker as well as being annoying when I hit mute, speaker, or hang up with my face. Any idea what my issue might be?
Phone is stock:
Android Version
2.3.3
HTC Sense Version
2.1
Home screen widgets and icons...
Sense Clock with weather
People, WiFi, Battery (HTC Widget), Voicemail
Messages, Market, Flashlight, Camera
laid out in that order from top to bottom, left to right. I have only one other widget on another screen for Player Pro. Running Lookout.
Download "proximity sensor finder" from the market.
And once opened you should see it say 9.0cm. cover your finger over the proximity sensor (little circle to the left of speaker grill) and that number should change to a 0...
if it doesnt you need to take your phone to sprint
I guess it is broken. I covered it and it did nothing. It messed up a few times where it would work a little, then come back on now the screen is on all the time. I have resorted to pushing the power button while in a call to turn the screen off. Does the same thing I guess but it really doesn't matter much. I think I am going to get the Photon soon.
Thanks for the tip on the app. I think I will use it in the future.

No problem,
Although since that is just a defect that came with the phone, Sprint will replace that for free, without any problems.
(and tell/show them the apps responses if they do, they cant deny proof )
Just make sure you run the RUU beforehand if you do take it in and your rooted (but you said your on stock 2.3 so im assuming your not anyway)
Nope, all stock... I will look into returning it... it is a good phone and wouldn't mind it as a back-up phone.
Bump...
I still have my EVO Shift and the day before yesterday I did something to my phone to try and fix my led issue. It wasn't a major problem with it but something was obstructing the led making it hard to see when I got notifications. Well It started by me using a fine bristled brush to clean the little mesh earpiece screen with to clean over the led... it started to work and then made it worse. I then decided to just remove the mesh screen. I pried it out as gently as I could which made it easy to clean the obstruction from the led but as a very welcome side affect it also fixed my proximity sensor!!! The phone now functions fully again. So to all those willing to try it if your sensor is "broken" try removing the metal mesh part of the earpiece... just be very careful.

[Q] Soft key backlight?

The lights for my three softkeys don't always turn on, unless i cover the front cam/light sensor with my finger. any way to fix this so that the backlight turns on when i'm using the phone?

its automatic with light sensor
yeah, i get that...
but, i'm sitting in complete darkness right now, and the soft key lights aren't coming on. the only way it does is if i cover the front camera with my finger.
does that mean it's faulty? or is there something i can do to make the lights come on when they're supposed to?
Mine are hit or miss. Most of the time I find myself covering the sensor like you said. Didn't see an option to adjust sensitivity or anything. Pretty lame.
I noticed this too. They should make settings option to be selected by user...miss the perfection of the NEXUS one

I think it is faulty, my key light is on whenever the surrounding light condition is poor. Don't think there is a setting for this but I might miss something here.
Bottom line, if you fully checked the setting cannot find anything, just exchange it.
Mine also seem to be inconsistent. Sometimes they come on immediately (like they should), sometimes I have to open an app, and sometimes they won't come on at all.
One wacky theory that I have is that the sensor is getting tricked by the reflection of the screen from my glasses. It may be in my head, but I feel like the issue comes up less when I am wearing contacts.
Maybe a solution
Have you tried this one? I did on my cm9-ed U8160, maybe it works on your devices too.
Mine are perfect, never have to cover the proximity sensor. Probably just a thing with different batches of devices. Got mine early summer around June.

Mate 9 Calibration

Has an had any issues with screen calibration? Sometimes when I click on the screen it presses to the left of it. When I'm in the recents screen for my apps, it sometimes swipes away instead of selecting it, and I'm unable to consistently unlock the phone while it is charging. (Works like once in every 5 times) however, I'm on sure if that one is related.
Anyone have any ideas?
Which firmware are you on? I remember older firmwares were having a bit of a touch sensitivity isues.

I'm on MHA-L29C567B183. US version of the phone. Stock
Did you install a screen protector? Could be the reason for sensitivity issues. If not, I don't know. Maybe a factory reset Will help?

I removed the screen protector when I purchased it. I could do a factoru reset and see how it goes. Hopefully it's software related and not hardware related.
I do hope so as well then. I do have to say that the factory installed screen protector doesn't do this screen justice.

I thought it was for protecting it in the box?
Mine had a lot of air bubbles in it so removed it right away.
My charger still has the plastic on it though xD

Lol, no, this phone comes with a screen protector pre installed .
The touch sensitity is definitely off a little. I have to swipe the notification bar sometimes twice for it to come down. I also get some missed taps but it's infrequent enough that it isn't a problem for me. I heard they started fixing touch latency and optimization in 5.1. Don't know if we will ever see it.
If you are not using the stock charger weird things can happen.
Alrighty update: Factory settings still yields the same results. It's not frequent enough to make me go crazy, but it's still roughly the same. I guess my real pet peeve is when I need to go to the app manager to return to an open app and it just closes out. I've lost a lot of information that way like recipes when cooking and etc.
What I really don't understand is the fingerprint sensor not working while it's charging. It doesn't matter what charger I use. It just doesn't respond most of the time (Sometimes it unlocks like it's suppose to)
Im using Quick Charger from SS and I have this problem too. It's nice to know this is a common issue, not only me. I dont have any issues with fingerprint when charging, just notice when the battery between 5-60% it's insensitive for me (maybe quick charge is working strongly in this range), "insensitive" here means when you press and hold any things on the screen, it'll "tap" it and open it instead, all pressing or sliding or zooming actions are normal, just dragging has issue. When the battery is 70% and above, it becomes normal and no more insensitive touch. Just that so I think I can bear this thing.
