Do you have SD card? Do you have a lot of free space? 4K videos take a lot of memory.

Nope, don't have it. Not in the settings and not in that camera applications thing. I have a 64GB SD-card optimized for 4k video shooting (high sequential write speed), so that should not be a problem.

Hm that is weird. Try searching for latest camera add-ons (in your case 4K) on apkmirror or if it is updated, try removing update. I had problem on my old phone with timeshift burst. When I update add-on and start it I get camera crash, but when I uninstall update (I think in options it said something like "Do you want to replace this app with the factory version?") timeshift burst works perfect.

I don't have that but I just got a xperia tip notification that says "enable double tap to wake". When I touch "take me there" it can't find the related menu of course.

Both 4k and dttw need hardware support.
According to this page about the xa's soc, 4k support is absent.
And since they did not add dttw in previous firmwares, I'm guessing this is not supported either.

As far as I know, dt2w must be supported by kernel not the hardware.

I guess the hardware should provide the possibility to enable touch without enabling display.
With oled screens this doesn't matter, as a black screen uses (almost) no power, but leaving a lcd display on is wasteful.
Of course, kernel support is necessary on top of hardware support.
(Correct me if I'm wrong, I certainly don't claim to be an expert on any of this)

I'm not an Android expert too but in Windows Phone, my Lumia 630 has standard IPS display (no OLED) what I needed to enable dt2w was adding a simple registry key (NT kernel supports dt2w regardless of device but for some reason, Nokia decided to disable it on cheap WP devices).
Also my old Ace 2 used to support dt2w with custom kernel on cm10 or 11 I can't remember exactly (it has standard LCD display)
On both of these devices battery consumption didn't change after dt2w.

I'm not an Android expert too but dt2w is based on kernel feature and use the digitizer to work, OLED or LCD is not the problem. As you probably know I enabled F2FS feature on my XA, the question is the same: why Sony didn't use it out of the box?
For me the answer is because a mid-range device must stay a mid-range device and costumers must have the illusion that there is a big difference with flagship devices.

Yup 4K is not going to be available even with newer updates since Mediatek MT6755 Helio P10 supports up to 1080p 30fps H.264 on video encoding.

from BizzaBoy @ supportforums.motorola.com
"The DEFY camera modules is able to do 720p. It's a MT9P012 according to the boot log.
Looking at the kernel sources on opensource.motorola.com (drivers/media/video/mt9p012.c), there is a FRAME_1296_30FPS mode supported which reads in a 1296x972 frame that would be cropped down to 1280x720. From the code it appears that those smaller modes are achieved by skipping pixels. This also explains why there is no 720x480 mode, just a 648x486 internal mode.
Ok, next looking at TI's OMAP3 literature, it says that it can do up to 720p HD.
So at the end of the day the DEFY *should* do 720p, and a 2.2 update *might* enable that.
I personally would be extatic to have 720p. The DEFY is really mindblowing as a allround device, where I can record videos on our weekly ski-trips, but 640x480 @30fps really, really sucks. 640x480 @60fps would be great, or 720p @30fps. Overall the camera/camcorder interface needs some substantial work. You cannot switch to a explicitie white balance (only auto), which is a pain if you record video where the lighting changes and the camera software tries to readjust the white balance. The other thing that drives me nuts is that you cannot adjust the image quality settings for the jpeg encode. "

Resolution is not bigger in default Camera.App But in my opinion cam is a bit faster.
I've taken 2 photo before and after renaming file, and i get the same photo, with same specification and resolution.
I've also tried with Pro Zoom Camera 5X and with Vignette, i get the same picture...
So i think we have "only" 5Mo in hardware...
Ok, it a 5MP Cam but 720p should possible.

As I wrote , Acer Liquid use the same camera (MT9P012).
But no 720p for liquid but I think Liquid Steam has same camera with 720p support.
Hope this one help..
Thank you for working for us
what's next? i mean, to get VGA @ 120FPS or HD working?
I think must be easy modify the Android Kernel to accept the 120FPS but will be more complicated hack the Camera.apk to add this feature.
I would start to hack for HD Video. Maybe will be complicated for the Kernel but easaly for the application.
i will donate, if this works good

Question on UHD Video Recording Limitations

Hi All from Toronto, Canada!
I hope this is the right place to ask this. My question is as follows:
I have an Honor Note 8 with the Kirin 955 and the Mali T880. The camera on this phone is the Sony IMX278 RGBW sensor, which isn't the best as I hear, but is able to record 4k/UHD video.
From what I can gather, the Kirin 955 doesn't support hardware level UHD video encoding (only DECODING), and any phone with this SoC isn't able to record 4k/UHD video.
Would it be possible (albeit a lot of work) to record 4k/UHD video and either encode it at a software level (i gather this would be really slow), or even by using the GPU instead of the CPU to encode it? From what I can gather, the GPU is much more efficient as processing graphics and 2D video shouldn't be a problem at all for it. It seems like a solution to this would allow any user with this hardware configuration to be able to enjoy their phone cameras a lot more.
I know 4k/UHD video isn't really widespread yet, but I do have the necessary components at home including a 4k TV to be able to enjoy this resolution, so I am looking for a solution to this. Is it as simple as modifying the media_profiles.xml file and installing a different camera app?
I don't know a lot about android development, but I am making it a point to learn as much as I can, and I have put quite a lot of research into this idea before posting here, including searching on XDA. I work in Software Application Support for a small CRM, and I have years of experience doing mods and customization on android devices, so I am familiar with the landscape here and I should at least be able to understand any answer no matter how technical.
Thank you for your help!

I don't know much about Kirin SOC but with say QCOM to be able to encode via software using say FFMPEG the ISP would have to return preview frame with UHD Dimensions.
Its probably Capable of Encoding 4K maybe can check if it can be modded by understanding how everything works .
1st Check in /system/vendor/lib /system/lib/ lib64 for any file containing the word camera zip them attach them to your post
2nd download freedcam from play store in the menu scroll down and save camera parameters attach the file outputted to /DCIM/FreeDCam

4K Dislpay?

Hey I wanna know that Sony's doing the same thing like they did with Z5 Premium?
Like this is 1080p by default but only when you open in gallery and maybe amazon prime video app triggers the 4K?
I remember Erika Griffin mentioned that you can change the resolution but another YouTuber said it's 1080p by default.
Erica's video (Watch at 3m4s)
Mathew's video (Watch at 2m17s)
I think you can toggle it manually, pretty sure I've understood that and it only makes sense.
Not that you should want it to run in 4k all day but for vr or something and actual 4k content.

Are you sure these guys even checked? Kinda sucks if it doesn't. I mean its something that really isn't needed. I owned the z5 premium and had it emulate 4k all the time with a kernel and then in the end just went back to stock but it its also something reviewers would target as an issue
I hope there will be simple hack to enable such a feature. This will be needed for example when you want to watch VR video with cardboard using custom app, even if content will be 4k by default app will not enable it.
Yea you can enable it to 2K 4K with abd. I just wanted to see if Sony had implemented to change the display res under the settings, Guess they did NOT.

You can try this method when you get the phone.
Plus I saw it in a video that Sony mentioned that they may include an option to change the resolution in future update. I think they should but I would just use it in 2K once I get the device.
yes i knew this adb trick from the old sony xperia 4k Handy, i make it so bevor i sell it, but this was not a good option, the apps/players for the VR 360 movies working bad, to small on the Display........you would not happy with this Settings
then Sony make a new 4K Handy, and what? Same fuc....k
4K only works in Sony Photo App and Sony Videoplayer........but this can not play 360 or 180 Videos corretly with motion, only still.
Techradar says:
"You won’t find a sharper screen on another smartphone, and unlike its 4K-toting predecessor you actually get the full resolution all the time. The Z5 Premium would only deliver the full 4K experience when you were watching video of the same resolution, whereas on the new Xperia XZ Premium it’s 3840 x 2160 all the way – from the home screen and browser to the app store and your social media profiles."
I think it is a mistake from Techradar, but what do you think, can it be true?

You won't get higher resolution graphics in any game by changing the resolution to 4k. All you will do is zoom out really far making things really hard to see and the ui will be tiny. It would only be worth it in games that use proper scaling and there aren't many aaa games on Android that might do it. Buy a 4k phone for videos and photos. Don't expect people to quadruple their graphics production workload for such a niche gaming market.

Thanks! I'll read some more about the manual mode. Does that mean I have to adjust the manual settings, or can I leave everything in auto?
To adjust manual is so tricky and need more knowledge. But preloaded scenes SCN in manual mode was ok for diferent situations. For Example - Sport is for fast moving with very fast focusing. Or Twilight from hand or Anti shaking is good for low light but need to turn on flash.
Im not sure for the scene names because my phone is on other language.

Thanks again! I have another question relating to the camera. It goes as follows:
The Xperia XZ1 (with 8.0 Oreo) has a much better camera than the XZ Premium (with Android 7.1 Nougat), even though they have the exact same camera hardware, the XZP has much more oversharpening (and other issues that the regular XZ has), but the XZ1 seems to have much better software processing. My question is, therefore, that: Does that mean the XZ's camera will get much better as well, once the Android 8.0 update arrives?
Here is my source: https://www.androidcentral.com/sony-xperia-xz1-camera
Camera soft is from Sony not from Google. I think that Sony probably will not make xz cam on the level xz1 for marketing reasons. Maybe a little update something between. But developers for sure will make a port on xz1 camera for xz.

Another question: Should I leave Smart Cleaner (the Sony tool in the "Storage & Memory" section of the settings app) on? Some people say it reduces performance, but Sony claims it optimises it. What do you think and what would you do?
I have the Google camera APK downloaded and it works but can't see a difference from the stock camera, may be it's just a app but the processing of done by Sony. They don't have raw. So maybe that's why Google camera with HDR + can't do anything to make it better.

The interface is the same, but "Google Camera" doesn't have the HDR+ processing that the Google Pixel's camera app has. HDR+ greatly reduces noise, especially in low light, while also improving image quality in backlit scenes. The Google Pixel's camera (with HDR+) has been ported to other Android devices with the Snapdragon 820 or up, but you can only use it if your phone fully supports the Camera 2 API. Sadly, our phone lacks the ability to take RAW photos, and therefore it cannot use the ported Pixel camera app.
I hope this clears things up a bit.
By the way: You said you're using Android Oreo, so maybe you do have the capability of shooting RAW photos now. I'm not on Oreo yet, because Sony still hasn't published the update in the Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg). Could you install this app and see if the XZ does have full Camera 2 API support now with Oreo?

The interface is the same, but "Google Camera" doesn't have the HDR+ processing that the Google Pixel's camera app has. HDR+ greatly reduces noise, especially in low light, while also improving image quality in backlit scenes. The Google Pixel's camera (with HDR+) has been ported to other Android devices with the Snapdragon 820 or up, but you can only use it if your phone fully supports the Camera 2 API. Sadly, our phone lacks the ability to take RAW photos, and therefore it cannot use the ported Pixel camera app.
I hope this clears things up a bit.

Exactly the same as on Nougat—no RAW support. That's too bad. Thanks for trying!

Is FiLMiC Pro works on Xperia 5 II?

Hi everyone,
I'm interested in this phone, but sadly there is no available store in my country that I can test the device, online purchase only.
I've read that GCam support is broken because of Sony hardware/software settings.
So, Is FiLMiC supported? It's mostly Camera APIs and not processing much as GCam. Anyone can test with FiLMiC Pro Evaluator on the Playstore and give me a screenshot, please? I know There is Cinema Pro on Xperia but FiLMiC Pro has some solid settings like high bitrate and gimbal connect.
Thanks a lot

Great! Thank you.
I see the support for all lens are good. Can you verify that on the "Wide" tab, there is [email protected] option?

Much appreciate
Nice to see Sony did not mess with general Camera API.
This app does not fully reflect the performance.
On my x5ii, Android 10, Filmic pro 6.13.3
1080p 8bit HEVC/AVC just fine
res above 1080p 8bit HEVC/AVC jumped frame
res above 1080p 10bit HDR HEVC just fine
The developers promised to fix this issue in the next release.
Thank you for sending in that information! I submitted your information to our developers and just heard back from them. In order to fix the problem you were experiencing we are going to have to use a limited mode for resolutions above 1080p—this change will be made in an upcoming update to FiLMiC Pro. In case you're not aware, there are multiple image buffer options available within the Android camera framework and each of them gives access to different features but has different drawbacks. We use the advanced image buffer in order to provide the advanced features that we do, but if the advanced image buffer won't allow us to provide a stable frame rate—as you've experienced here—then we switch to using the limited buffer type instead.
This limited mode uses a different version of the video recorder, which limits what features we're able to use at those frame rate/resolution configurations.
'Limited mode' restrictions are as follows:
Aspect Ratios: ‘Crop Source to Overlay’ unavailable
Zoom: Smooth adjustment unavailable
Cinematographer Kit: Limited availability on some devices
Anamorphic Desqueeze Unavailable
So once the update is available that changes 2k+ resolution to limited mode, those functions will no longer be available at high frame rates. This is a hard decision to make as it does remove feature support, but it will enable us to provide stable high frame rates instead.
I hope that clears up what will be happening, but if you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out!
