Can I expect lag-free and long battery life on S8+? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

I'm trying to choose between samsung s8+ and sony xz premium. Samsung is offering a very good discount, and the larger screen is a plus for me over xzp. But I had very very terrible experience with s5: response could take like 10+ seconds, and the battery life sucked. These two are the biggest concerns for me looking at s8+. I know phones generally performs well when they are out-of-box, and I'd like to hear from owners who have been using s8+ for a while: how is the experience regarding response time and battery life?

I've had my S8+ for a while now, and the batterylife is beyond what I have ever tried on any other phone.. I have not yet been able to drain it on a single day.. Always above 45-50% when I end the day.. with 3-4 hours of SOT.
About the lag some people talk about, I will say (Though never owned a pixel) it's probably not AS smooth as the pixel with stock android, but I have not experienced any lag. I'm also using Package Disable to disable about 104 packages, which helps quite a bit as well I usually always have above 1GB of RAM free.
I hope this helped a little

Stock.. havnt disabled anything with alot of apps installed (restored from my s7edge) and so far doesn't lag even with QHD screen resolution.

How about battery life?

S8+ using QHD+, Medium brightness with location, wifi, and data always on, and I've been able to easily hit 7+ hours of screen on time (SOT) with heavy usage such as lots of YouTube videos , light gaming for hours (clash Royale and clash of clans), Instagram, Reddit, and browsing the internet. Even on other days where I'm doing super super intensive usage like Bluetooth to car and listening to music, and gps navigation at the same time along with lots of 4k video recordings I can easily last through the day. I'm not even scared to leave the house with only 60% if it's the start of the day since it'll last me that long. Quick charge is a cherry on top too. Screen is gorgeous and I keep the always on display enabled .

My s5 never lagged

Depends really.. QHD and spending most of the day on 4G I get around 4.5 hrs. FHD and Wi-Fi gets around 5.5 hrs.
Ive only had the phone for a week and I am on vacation. So it's too soon to judge as I am always taking pictures and uploading on social media... talking on VOIP etc. I can easily last 10 hrs or so with loads on pictures and social media and phone calls and YouTube (not a gamer). So I think normal work/home days would def get me around 5 hrs with QHD.

Easily one of the best battery life I've had on a smartphone. Definitely worth it. And that's with heavy usage too, YouTube and gaming pretty much all day

Why do people say they get awesome battery life with the 1S?

Why do people keep saying that the battery life of the HTC One S is awesome?
I seriously get no more than 4 hours of screen time (although the standby time was 30 hours) and thats with very very aggressive battery saving methods. I just can't get more than that. Most of the time between 2-3 hours under moderate/heavy use with standard settings.
Same thing goes for AMOLED. Yesterday I was only using the stock browser with INVERTED colors, aggressive battery saving profile and nothing else. And still, still I only got 4 hours out of it. How is this even possible? I mean everything on my phone was pitch black. Wallpapers, themes, websites. But under normal use I basically get the same results?
Has this been a lie all this time?
I´d say 4 hours of screen time is pretty good.
At least assuming you havn´t had it to min. brightness.
I think people aren't comparing the same figures
screentime vs battery uptime
4 hours of screen time with 30 hours of total use is pretty damn good for any smartphone.
I've owned several android devices and the difference in battery life from all the others to the One S is ridiculous. I really don't see what you're complaining about.

I don't think that the Battery is that great. If i use it moderate i survive a day. That is okay but not great. My galaxy S lasted a half day longer...
But it is realy useless to discuss it. There is no standard for moderate or heavy use. If i use it very low because i am busy with something else it holds two days and more...
But 4h screen on and still 30h runtime sounds pretty good to me too
I did 2 hours of on screen time (browsing the internet over Wifi, downloading apps, etc.), and my battery went from 100% down to ~70%. I'm pretty happy with that.

thats 6.7 hours of browsing while on wifi. I am not even getting 4 hours of browsing with inverted/black colors on 3G.
Guys, this phone has an AMOLED screen and I am browsing the web where virtually everything is pitch black except text while wifi/bt/gps/sync is disabled and virtually no other background processes are running except for the android stuff and one app called tasker. Auto-brightness enabled. The screen is basically off except for the text! I took it to the extreme but where are my power savings?
Even standby time is not that impressive. Anytime I am not using the browser the phone is in 2G mode, no wifi/bt/gps/mobiledata, auto rotate turned off, auto brightness enabled, no widgets, disabled all the status bar icons such as time/battery/signal icons, no wallpaper, no other fancy stuff. Just a grid of icons on my homescreen and tasker running in the background.
I had colors on my iphone and I get way more browsing time while not compromising at all with the other stuff.

Thats true. But I guess I am not even getting 1 day or 8 hours of screen time
Set the brightness down to min and/or try a custom rom. I was on stock, but I hear the battery life improves quite a bit on some of the custom roms available.
Also, this phone is significantly faster (spec-wise) than the iPhone. If you want longer battery life, perhaps you should switch to a phone that allows you to swap out the battery (GS3), or go for a low-end phone like the iPhone.
I should also add that the updated firmware 1.70, 1.78 also extends battery life. Those updates have not been released to U.S. phones yet.
OP -- seriously? Are you complaining? Find me a smartphone with better battery life with a comparable specs-to-batterySize. Droid Razr Maxx doesnt count, as its battery is 2x as large.
I took mine off the charger at work @ 5pm yesterday. It's now 10:23am, and I'm at 72%. I did a decent amount of web browsing, calls, and texting, and some music.
OP can you send me the browser apk with the inverted colors?

Stock browser has it already. Settings -> Accessibility -> scroll down a bit and you will see inverted rendering. Basically makes every B/W and inverts the blacks and the whites.
I was btw running CM9 alpha6. And seriously I don't really know about the other smartphones since I have only used the iphone 4. I believe that smartphone gets more screen time. So probably the iphone 4s too. I think the 1X and 1XL gets better screen time when I read the reviews and with the latest updates.
" or go for a low-end phone like the iPhone."
LOL!
I was confused about this for a moment. I think you think that the battery time left is what your screen shot says 4 hours and change. That's the time it has ben off the charger blnot what's left on battery. That seems normal to me for it to be @ 60

I can get almost two days of moderate use, including tethering on the stock Rom. I'm sure not every phone is equal but the battery life on this phone's exceeds my HTC Aria, iPhone's and my G2x.

His first screen shot tells us he got 4 hours and 7 minutes of screen on time and it accounted for 65% of his battery usage.
Which it way better then I get I only get about 2 hours of screen on time out of a full day of usage.
And the OP is right that IOS is the king of battery live when it comes to web browsing.

Wrong my battery was at 6% (actually even lower like 3% but I didn't take a screenshot). And the display accounts for 65% of that battery drainage. Don't you guys use android at all?
Btw according to that graph its getting 5-6 hours. But why am not even getting 4 hours max? When I did as much as possible to reduce battery consumption. Going as far as to invert the colors. I was expecting major savings. After all isn't the screen suppose to be off when its displaying blacks? I am very skeptic about amoleds now and the claims that it saves battery life when displaying dark colors. And how this is all the time used as a pro. I think its phony.
No one is going to browse the internet like me and it didnt even work

Questions about the S6 before buying

Hi all, I'm considering buying a Galaxy S6 and I'd like to ask about how the device is holding up. I've heard that out of the box it's good, but lag and poor battery life start to set in within days. Is this true?

No lag at all after a week, fastest phone ever owned (I came from Note 4, Nexus 6 and Iphone 6). Battery for me is a really bad and also the reception.
No issues with lag when I owned the phone but battery life was shocking when comparing to an iPhone 6 - and that isn't even best of class!

Hmm, define shocking? Also what's everyone's SOT?
I'd describe myself as a medium user, use 2 to 3 hours every day, mostly on WiFi, will it survive a whole day?

I would say I'm the same in terms of use. The phone dropped 30% in about an hour and half worth of constant browsing... I always have a charger around so I've not been in a position where it's run out or run really low.
I switched from a Nexus 6 mostly because the N6 was too big and I loved the camera on the S6. The S6 is just as fast (if not faster) than my N6 w/ Faux kernel. I'm getting similar battery life/SOT. My S6 is completely stock aside from some frozen apps/bloat.
Not the OP but I am thinking about S6 but scared of low battery life.
Appreciate the info so that would be equal to about 5 hours continual Browsing.
At low indoor brightness maybe 25% and on LTE - is that about what you get ?
Some vague " Pro Reviews" suggest more but they seem to use non real world tests...
no problems with the battery life for me. I usually get around 4.5 - 5 hours screen on time with 16-17 hours total time. It takes about and hour to charge from 10% to 100% I have T-mobile service so I had to turn off wifi calling and VoLTE. Those were big battery drains. It has good standby times too. I usually charge it to 100% then unplug it before i go to bed. I wake up and the phone is at 99% or 98%.
Also i leave the auto brightness on, bluetooth on, location is gps only, google location reporting off, google now off.

Is Mate 9 battery actually rubbish? Honest thoughts please

Hi guys,
Background: I use my phone I'd say medium use. Clash of clans, videos and photos browsing, emails, whatsapp. But i hate to put anything off so 4G location bluetooth everything always on. My note 4 has been amazing with its removable battery allowing me to use a phone in this way amd has revolutionised the enjoyment i get out of it. No more switching on and off bluetooth or gps. No worries in the world. Now i need a new one with a big screen and decent enough cam and the only option with removable battery is the LG V20 which to be fair looks a decent phone. However I also see the Mate 9 and whilst it doesn't have removeable battery it has a sensible screen res and a 4000mah battery meaning it should last a full day no worries. And I prefer the faster Kirin 960 and the bokeh camera setup.
The issue: i was on the verge of ordering it when I came across techzillas 1 month review where basically trashes the battery. Yes he's a heavy user but he's comparing it to other phones which do better with his same use.
I don't understand. Is it his firmware? Has the issue been sorted? Is the battery not that great afterall? Id be buying from wondamobile so id be getting whatever international rom they use. Shall I just play it safe and get the lesser V20 if I'm going to keep all things on?
For me it seams that with the b156 firmware the battery is not as good as before. But still excellent I use my phone a lot and most of the time I manage a full day with out charging. I get around 8 hours screen time. I never play games on my phone but use it mostly for productivity and browsing. Occasionally I watch some movies , YouTube and listen to tidal.
Most of the time I use very low brightness as I prefer this for reading.

Ah.. I'm new to this of concept of SOT. I don't know how it works. I can't imagine anyone sitting there staring at their phone literally for 8 hours! I work in the day and use it every now and then there, then when home when the wife isn't having a spazz at me for daring to go on the phone I use it now and then for using Kodi remote and youtube etc... I don't know how much screen on time that'd equate to.
Do you keep all things like bluetooth and GPS and 4G on or do you have to be careful with it like with all my old phones in order to get a full day? With my Note 4 as I say a breath of fresh air that I could keep everything on and just change battery once I got home.
Everything is on, during the day I mostly use 4G. The reason I get between 6 and 8 hours is because I have to do a lot of emailing and maintaining appointments etc for my work and blackberry hub is so good in emailing (mush better than the outlook my company uses) I use my phone for that instead of my laptop. Also I do lots of reading both work an pleasure related.
If i have slow days I can manage two days on one charge easily. In short the mate 9 has an excellent battery. I'm never thinking about the battery as I did with my old phones it seems to be even better than my old BlackBerry Passport
It's the best battery life of any phone I have used. Mine is on 4g all day with GPS and bluetooth always on.
My previous best phone was the Note 4 that I had to charge every night. I only have to charge the Mate 9 on alternate nights however hard I use it.
I have other issues with the Mate 9, but the battery is certainly not one of them.

As above, I'm surprised it's this good after the techzilla trashign of the battery on youtube. You wouldn't know yur firmware would you?
What are your issues with it? I hear low light cam performance isn't excellent but it isn't great with my Note 4 either and I can't imagine it's ever satisfactory with the size of lens you can get on any phone. I'm looking to use the Bokeh effect for nice pics of my daughter, is this bit at least working well?

It certainly seems from what you guys are saying that this beast will live from morning to evening without even needing a charge for my sort of use even with everything on. Sounds really awesome and might have swung be back into getting this over the V20 again.

I think I have to most recent one. All I can think of maybe the guy plays allot of games or has some rogue app on his phone eating all the battery life. In any case most reviews are positive about the battery so if one dude that dislikes it does sound like an isolated incident.

Yeah the more I look into it the more I think this is the case.
He seems like a nice decent likable chap who I'm assuming doesn't have a bias either way. But according to his "heavy use", when people say they're getting much better battery than his alleged figures he defines in his comments his heavy use as:
" i stream music from Spotify, watch YouTube, i have 5 email accounts syncing constantly, i get around 1000 emails an hour, 7 to 800 Telegram msgs an hour, fb,twitter, instagram, fb msg, /google Plus, snapchat, youtube studio, surfing the web, a couple of hrs phone calls, text messages, XDA, 500 Whats App msgs per Hour. This is how i test batterty life, and for me the Mate 9 can't deliver more than 6hrs SOT"
All I can say to that is WOW! Who on earth links five emails, gets 1000 emails AN HOUR, 100s of telegrams whatever they are, 500whatsapp messages PER HOUR (I mean that's one every 7.2 seconds!!!!). with loads of other stuff running and TWO HOURS of calls etc etc.. If doing all that with everything on he's getting 6 hours SOT then I can say I'm mightily impressed with it! Even heavy users wouldn't be be using it that much I'm sure. And if he can honestly say he gets the same SOT with iphones and samsungs with more powerful screens and smaller batteries all I can say is at worst I frankly don't believe it, at best he's got a dud Mate 9 or more likely all the aforementioned phones are awesome and we have nothign to worry about as 6 hrs SOT with a whatsapp message every 7.2seconds and an email every 3.6seconds plus all the other **** running is very respectable.
Personal experience over the Note 5. this thing kills battery life expectancies.
The Note 5 with:
BT ON Connected to huawei watch
GPS off
No Autosync
All apps killed
No calls
15 texts per day max
Packages disabled
1-2 hours of screen use tops
I Got maximum 13 hours. I get up every day at 8am and by 7-745 its nearly dead doing next to nothing. Android will not sleep and samsung refuses to accept its their software. My Mate 9, buds Moto Z play both on tmobile never have issues. he gets 8-9 hours screen time i get 8-9 hours screen time charge once every 2-3 days.
My Settings are EXACTLY the same with the exception of:
BT off when not using my Sony M1000x headphones.
300+ textsPer day.
No calls
Checking FB via Metal for FB
Email in Gmail 5-6 times a day
Camaro Forums via chrome browser
Instagram
Spotify + many more apps
And i never have issues. Granted i exchanged it because the B156/157 idk which one ruined battery. i have a B138 fw now and it works flawlessly. Its pathetic samsunbg phones barely make it through the day even when NOT used. Im dropping samsung and sprint very soon.

If your main consideration is battery life I do not think you will be disappointed.
But for what it is worth I will tell you the points I do not like about the Mate 9.
The vibration is very weak.
The notification light is tiny and almost invisible except in the dark.
The GPS is poor and no good for sports use.
There are various problems with notifications and some email apps don't work properly.
All these problems are discussed in this forum.

Sorry I can't help you with gmail as I don't use it on this phone.
Right now I have 89% left, 10 hours active, 33 mins SOT. I think I got 7h SOT yesterday and still 50% left.
Compared to my Note 4 which barely lasts 12 hours, and that's idle time.

Ah i see thanks.
Thats disappointing. I may wish ti get back into cycling and if it cant track my ride accurately it sounds like a dud. How ridiculous! Just as i was about to buy one another problem pops up.
I wonder if huawei just aren't ready for making phones...!
It's a shame, yes. There are of course many good things about the Mate 9. They just let it down on a few things.
my mate 9 gets 9-10 hours of heavy use - granted i have some mods and tweaks

Owners: How's the battery?

XZ Premium owners, how are you finding the battery? My Z2 and now Z5 have never guaranteed me a full day, and now that my Z5 is a bit older I'm charging twice daily. So I'm torn between the Z5P and the OP5, for all it's flaws -- is battery life better than the Z5? I'm particularly interested in dual-SIM, but I assume the battery life won't be all that different to the single-SIM handset.
My last Sony phone as a daily driver was my Z3. Battery was fine on that until I did anything that made the CPU go into meltdown.
On the XZ Premium, Sony and Qualcomm have got things nicely under control - which means the phone doesn't run too hot (which in itself plays havoc with the battery, and can make it near impossible to charge) - and the battery doesn't seem to take much of a hit even when playing video or taking photos.
My phone can still get hot when taking photos and give me the warning, but despite me using the phone heavily, the battery (given its size) works commendably. Especially if you enable any of the stamina modes
I could live with most of these modes enabled all the time, with the only issue being when using an on-screen keyboard (it missing characters pressed), and then the battery lasts even longer.
tl;dr - the battery is good and I'm very impressed. You should get a whole day of usage without fear, and with a good deal of screen-on-time.
I got this phone yesterday. My previous phone was the Z3 Compact which was the king of the battery life back then, but now i think the XZ Premium is better than the Z3c while i use certain apps and it consumes more battery only when i use the Camera, Photos app, Video app and Youtube. I haven't used Stamina Mode yet.
Mine battery life is good, my best was 31 hour running always under 4g with 4+ hours of screen on
I do a day and a half with every single charge at the moment
Thanks everyone.
@Katsigaros, could you let me know how you're getting on after a week or so? I don't plan to buy until the start of this month, so I'd be interested in progress.
@Tonyevol that's impressive for standby, but is 4 hours SOT good? I had the same response from a few people on Reddit, with 5 hours of SOT, but I though 6+ was kind of the norm these day, with good phones getting 7 or 8.
I am getting 5-6 hours SOT as of now. Over a month, I have seen marked improvement week on week. Once we get root/ twrp, we can disable some processes and programs that aren't required thereby maximizing the battery juice.
Little better than Galaxy S7 Edge which is my previous before. I am quite happy with battery.

After the first time I used it i performed a full recharge from 1 to 100 % to calibrate the battery. I am watching a lot of videos and because of that the battery lasts me 1,5 - 2 days. If I am not watching videos I can get almost 3 days.
I will have a clearer view on battery life after one month but right now I am very satisfied with it.
It depends a lot about the way you would use it. For example I'm all days around without wifi connection avaible and of course 4g connection all the time working drains a lot of battery juice. Also having Facebook running all the time with instant messaging always on makes differences. Without using Facebook and limiting display luminosity would grant a much SOT

Battery on the regular Note 10

I know its too early to tell yet, but id be really interested to hear how the battery is fairing up, I have the S10+ atm and really like the smaller Notes form factor, seems the perfect size for me. Ive compared my phone to the Note and it does feel like a downgrade in a few area's, but yeh really interested in the battery really. Thanks.

Battery life is mediocre at most, maybe 1 full day with medium use, nothing exceptional.
Yea I bought it. Was expecting a little more from it battery. I knew this would be an issue going into it but did t realize it would be so bare minimum.
I purchased the regular Note 10. I'm only on day 3. I'm happy with the battery life. The 1st day I used it I got between 5.5-6 hours SOT and that was mostly WiFi. I charged it and took it off the charger at 2am to see how it drained overnight. I woke up and it was at 95% after being idle for 7 hours. I went to work with the phone and my stats from yesterday was 4.5 SOT with almost 24 hours being off the charger.
I think I use the phone pretty regular. Most of my user is from YouTube and Netflix. With yesterday's use I watched the 1st half of the Jets vs Saints.
So far I think its a little better then Pixel 3. Thanks to my recent increased use and Pixel 3 I started freaking out and plugging in charger all the time, need to go back to normal use where you unplug in the morning and plug back in before bedtime.
Here are some screen shots of my user of the regular Note 10. I'm at almost 16 hours off the charger. It's 9:20pm here. The battery life is better than my S10. I'm going on vacation tomorrow, depending how the photos are for me trip will determine if this phone is a keeper. So far I'm happy.
Thanks for everyone's replies, I'll wait a bit until I bite the bullet and thats if I do. I'm happy with the s10+ battery, obviously it won't be as good as that but I'll wait to hear more info on it. Cheers.

Here is a comparison with mixed usage on both Notes https://youtu.be/IrX0rp_Bnbw
Iam feeling the same way. I have pulled the trigger on the plus model mainly because i got it at a good price, and for the bigger battery plus i kinda feel that it's the real note 10 and the smaller version just seems like a downgrade.
Iam having some regrets now though after handling both in person. I just much prefer the size of the smaller note 10 and iam telling myself that the battery should be good enough to last a full day which is all we need really. Expandable storage isn't an issue as 256gb is more then enough for most users (certainly for me)
Iam now tempted to return my plus model when it arrives even though deep down i love that on paper it's technically the superior device. I wish the smaller note had a bigger battery, quad HD screen and the depth sensing camera.
If they had of just made one model somewhere in the middle in terms of size with maybe a 6.5 screen it would have been perfect but oh well.
It's ironic too that most ppl love the idea of a bigger screen but how many of us actually take advantage of that and make use of it. Most of us use our phones to communicate with each other so why do we even need bigger screens? Nice to look at but that's kinda it or am i wrong?

Ehh media consumption? Many people play games too.
Well I couldn't wait any longer and have the regular Note 10 coming tomorrow. I still have my S10+. I just hope the battery doesn't spoil it for me. With my S10+ I never worry about the battery because its never let me down. But I love the size of the Note 10. Like alot of people have said its just a shame they had to strip it down so much compared to the Note 10 plus. Anyway I have 14 days to compare. I'm really excited to see how i get on, hope its not a let down. If it is then I'll wait on the S11 or even the next huawei phone. I had the Huawei Mate 20 pro just before the S10+ and it was great phone. I think I just like to try new things.
Best I've got yet
Image didn't show but it was
6hrs 21min SOT
14hr 8min on battery
That's not too shabby

What i mean is that there are a lot of people that crave a bigger screen but dont even take advantage of it when they have it! Some people dont need a bigger screen but want it anyway imo!

I don't have an image to post but I have gotten similar SOT and standby battery life as you have. I've been able to nearly squeeze 6.5 hours of SOT and got over 24 hours of standby time. I would get better if I didn't keep locations services on full blast all the time plus I have a few survey apps running at all times which also use location/data services so that dings my battery. If you aren't using those things it'll likely be even better. I am totally fine with this battery life.

Wow that's great. I keep Bluetooth active for my gear s3 but not location. What kind of settings are you using?
I have an exynos standard note and like the S10/S10+ before it I would describe battery as acceptable but IMO below par. What bugs me is that it drops at quite a steady rate just sitting there doing nothing, goes from 100 to 99% within a few minutes of coming off charge and continues on from there.
Overall on my Note 10 exynos, the battery is really good. You have to put apps you dont want running in the background to sleep.
AOD I set to tap to show + aodNotify app to wake it up with incoming notifications + edge lighting. Power savings mode when at 50%. Mostly on wifi, no gaming and some light youtube usage.
