Bixby Voice Official Release - Samsung Galaxy S8 Guides, News, & Discussion

I contacted samsung today to see if see when the Bixby voice beta was going to be released. With no definitive answers I did hear it should be out today, June 21st. The Official release as confirmed by Samsung is to be by the end of this month, June. I was even told a specific date of June 28th. I know a lot of people do not like Bixby and the button and we already have Google Assistant and whatever, but from everything I have seen, Bixby voice is supposed to do the most and be the best. I do believe that it should be out by then. If you dont believe me, call Samsung Support or contact then via text chat. All give the same answer. Here is a screen shot of my chat I had.

EDIT: Bixby voice early access has started to roll out to the 10,000 people that have signed up. This is a server side update so don't expect any APKs. No emails have gone out explaining it. It just showed up in Bixby Home. From my time using it so far it actually seems really good. It has been getting better as I use it. It is, in my opinion, better than Siri. Expect the official US English release very soon. The english release is ONLY FOR THE US!!! Do not expect this in any other country yet. They are trying quickly to get this rolled out to as many countries with as many languages as possible.

I actually have the bixby voice icon on bixby today. I have not tested it yet but it was definitely not there yesterday.

Bixby voice beta is activated for me as of like an hour ago. Check out the app and hit the voice icon.
Tbh I'm not sure I'll use it ever/much as these voice things are a bit too much of a novelty for me, but it does seem to work quite well so far (although I'm in a relatively quiet office).

It's up! It's fairly polished for a beta

I'm going to whip up a quick app to bypass Bixby Voice and launch Google voice search instead (can't launch Assistant from third-party apps without root, sorry). Anyone with Bixby Voice want to test for me? Message me on hangouts at [email protected].

not there. They left it open for google assistant

To be honest, I was sceptical about bixby, but the bixby screen turned out more useful to me than Google Assistant, so I'm keeping it for now.
After seeing first reviews of bixby voice the fact Samsung has full system access to the phone makes a huge difference in what it can do. It looks rather useful.
Only problem: not here in Germany :crying: it'd be great if Samsung allowed other countries with the caviat that it's English only. I'd be fine with that... If any other release is anything to go by, we'll get it in 3 years when we've all moved on to new phones.

Where would be located in sorry for asking such a noon question but I just came back to android from Apple

you need to wait for the official release. It is officially out unless you signed up for the beta. If you signed up for the beta you can sign open Bixby home and click the Bixby icon next to the Bixby vision icon.

Its pretty unusable at the moment in my experience - you have to word your phrases pretty exactly, and it's recognition takes at least twice as long as that of google. I've no doubt it will get better, but I even remember my Moto X being more functional and quicker to recognize my commands.

Slightly Disappointed with Google Now?

I understand that Google doesn't want to create a privacy scare with Google Now, but I have to say that it isn't as useful as I was hoping. It shows me the weather in the morning and when to leave for the subway and when I had a flight it was cool to see the flight status. Beyond that though, I feel like it isn't being utilized to its full potential.
Anyone else feel this way? Have you thought of cool things Google Now could be doing?
I would love it if it actually read my calendar and noticed when there is a flight coming up. It'd be nice if it scanned my email and noticed that I have a package on the way and tracked that for me.
Maybe Google can have different tiers? The current Google Now can be for privacy freaks and people who love and trust Google can increase the amount of data that Google Now uses? I don't know....they just need to figure out something...
I get the impression its something that will be useful but that right now is one of those google services that is going to be essentially in beta for the next few years.
It is kind enough to tell me to go to the train station to get to work but only ever gives bus timetables. Its obviously aware of the train times as the directions to work tells me how long till the train leaves just doesn't seem to like timetables.
Weather works tells me home/work and occasionally where i am at that moment.
It has once brought up a card for pubs/restraunts nearby which i wouldn't mind being more consistent
I find it doesn't refresh very often. Today on way home it said last refreshed 39minutes ago, chose refresh and it just stayed the same claiming the same 39 minutes.
One day i think it will be a great feature but right now it doesn't work well enough to be more than a gimmicky preview of things to come.

To be honest, I don't see what the big deal about it is. Then again, it's not like I'm boarding flights and going to appointments every other day... and I usually know where I'm going if I'm leaving anywhere. As for the weather, I look out the window for that lol. Maybe in a few years Google Now will cook me eggs in the morning.

I tried it on my Sprint GS3, uninstalled, went back to regular search box. It does just what I need.
I enjoy this, maybe because I'm curious and love working new features. Honestly if you ask me.. its better than the Original Search right? I mean its the Original Search basically with awesome new features.
I guess if you aren't into your phone, or phone features you'd probably not care much. But this is a step forward for Google.. it may not show much compared to siri but at least they are making an effort?
I love it.
Even made the Google Now "Weather Card" which turned out pretty amazing.

Nexus 5 Phone Search

I have noticed that the Phone Search options under the Google Now settings are severely limited on the Nexus 5. On my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 I can set IMDB and Wikipedia among others to be searchable from the search box. All the options are gone now. You can't even launch maps or music. What's going on?

I'm seeing this problem on my Nexus 5 too. Really surprised to see Google release a device/software upgrade with such a core functionality missing.
I'm having a hard time believing that more people aren't talking about this issue.

Having the same issue, could barely find any threads talking about this problem. Have you guys managed to find a fix? I have the exact same settings under phone search as you, just contacts, app names, and Play books and movies.
I have been looking all over and haven't found any info.

I'm surprised by this as well! Maybe we just have to wait for the various apps to update for 4.4 to get recognized in the list?
On a related note, and I'm sure of the answer already, but, are you guys able to use the "OK, Google... Play [insert music]" command? It obviously doesn't here and I'm a bit disappointed... It didn't work on my old phone for a reason I wasn't able to figure out (perhaps a Nexus S issue or me being in Canada) and I was hoping it would work now...
Oh well...
There's a new API for this sort of functionality in Kit Kat. That's probably why. Google will be allowing developers to integrate their apps more seamlessly with Google Now. Rumor is an update to Google Search will be coming this week that will have the first bits of this functionality (limited only to certain developers who were given early access), but will expand soon after.
Basically, before, the integration was little more than speech-to-text for those apps, a very scrappy integration. This will be far more integrated into Google Now, with apps allowed to show cards and such.
Edit: Note that playing music is still possible however. Make sure you have the music apps you want installed first. Then, ask google to play something. A card will pop up, and it'll initially say "Google Play Store", but there's an option in the lower left corner to change that to any music app available. Basically it works the same as before, but instead of a pop-up window asking you, it's now an option below the card.
Thanks, that's good to know it's simply an API issue and we just need to wait for developers to update their app.
As for using the command "Play" or "Listen to" and "What's this song?" in Google Now, it appears it is still being blocked for us Canadians for now. I assume this restriction will be lifted once Google Play Music service is introduced in Canada. I know "Play" and "Listen to" used to work in the earlier builds but became blocked with one of the Google Now updates during the summer.
Just update to Google search 3.1.8, but the problem is stille, can't search music, book, or any other third party apps.

Anyone Know how to Opt out of Bixby Beta??

I am in the Bixby Beta and after that my camera no longer has the shutter sound option in which it should for being in the US. My wife who also has the S8+ and same camera version 7.0.75 does have the camera shutter sound option. Why do I want to silence shutter sound you ask? Well my dog is a complete weirdo and when I use the camera and he hears it he goes nuts for awhile barking. I could get rid of the dog but getting the option back seems much easier.
In another thread about the camera, a user said he was in the beta and had the option and nothing beyond that. Support in Bixby said there is no getting out of the Beta like google and said I might be able to delete my Samsung account and make a new one fixing the issue. I don't really want to do this as I am embarrassed to say, I have paid for some Samsung themes (Yes I know) and I would lose them if I re-create a Samsung account.
Has anyone reverted away from the Bixby beta successfully and if so how? Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

Wanted to add my wife is not in the Beta for Bixby and has the shutter option at the bottom of camera settings.
I have the option and I am on Bixby beta. I didn't do anything and I believe it has nothing to do with Bixby beta. I am on the same Camera version as your wife. Have you tried clearing your cameras data?

I reset my whole phone and no longer have the issue. While I believe it was caused by the beta, I am no longer having the issue on the beta.
Thanks for the feedback.

New Bixby Updates in US Today

Ok as ppl might know they are getting updates for a fully working Bixby. Question is... If I am in France or U.K for that.. and I of course speak 'Merican' English , Is it possbile to install this update via apk. Or for that matter can I flash a US varient in Odin and get this update. If so on that, if I do flash a US csc will my sim card still be fully functional?
And it still does nothing more then it did a moth ago for me. I got the updates today. It loaded a whole crap ton of new bixby apps. I press the button, and... I get the same set of cards, with no voice options at all. In settings, Nothing about voice either. I cleared data for bixby, and it setup again, but nothing new at all that way either.
Not interested in Bixby one little bit. Have disabled all of it with Package Disabler Pro.

I read some where that these are all the updates needed for bixby but we need to wait for Samsung to turn Bixby on, on the server side.

heard a tonne of people having problem with it, as well as few who used it, say its awesome.
The new update, or rather the second new update (I got one on the 18th, then another on the 19th) makes Bixby voice work. It does what it's supposed to, and it seems very fine tuned and fast.
It's a little embarassing it took so long, but it actually works now, and does have some innovation thrown in, like the dedicated button, and the difference between short and long press. It's been so long on Android that I've had a Siri-like voice assistant, I've forgotten when to use it....
But the thing I find myself always doing, is pressing the darn home button and saying "set a time for X-number of minutes". And it swirls, and does nothing. But Bixby immediately set the timer and gave me experience points.
So far, I'm happy..... is anybody else with me?
Its not quite as polished as "ok google" but the foundation for a great assistant has been laid. Especially turning on your phone without touching it, having it open and read mail.
Don't want it, won't use it....
How can others outside of US get it??

Not just call screening. Dialer on my 3 XL also auto-fills conference ID's!

The Pixel 3 has a lot of great new features. I think we can all agree that one of the most fulfilling ones is call screening, which I've now used on quite a few "Spam Likely" and local election calls. I enjoy using it every single time.
With that said, I spend a lot of time on conference calls with my clients and since I switched from my OnePlus 6 to the 3 XL this week, I've found a fantastic little feature in the stock Google Dialer on my 3 XL that doesn't get enough attention. In fact, I haven't seen anyone discuss this at all.
The feature auto-fills conference ID codes and even populates the final "#" symbol at the end, when necessary. This was not a feature I had on my OnePlus 6, my 2 XL or any other phone before and it is simply amazing. It saves me a ton of time trying to remember (and always forgetting) the conference code while dialing, or resorting to writing it down. I suspect this is just a new feature in the Google Dialer that is also available on other phones. But like I said, it was never one my 2 XL, so I have no prior experience with it.
Admittedly, the feature is small and many won't even know about it, but this is a serious new "must have" for me, which I've already used 9 times since Monday. Love it!

This is a feature of Google Calendar. It's been around for quite some time.
That said, its a huge quality of life thing for those of us who spend a lot of time on conference calls.

According to w0rdie, it's actually a feature of Google Calendar. I'm assuming as long as you use that as your default calendar it should be setup automatically for you. I didn't need to set anything up. It just worked on my phone right out of the box.
