Stretch YouTube? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Ok, I know it's not the most popular opinion on how to view videos, but is there a way to have YouTube stretch videos instead of cropping to fit them? I know viewing stretch will make things look fat, but the crop feature cuts off some of the video, and I'd rather watch stretch than sacrifice content. Is there any way to do this?

No. No such option, this question has been ask before.
I know it is user preferences but I still need to highlight It is awful and wrong way watching video in stretch. Aspect ratio is very important, probably YouTube purposely don't want to add-in such option to helping some user watching video in a correct way.

Ah well that sucks. At least having the option of stretching or cropping would be nice.

I wouldn't want to watch that way myself, but I agree it should be an available option either in the YouTube app or in the system settings. Maybe in the future.

[Q] Handbrake transcoded widescreen video still displays black bars?

First off, I don't understand video and audio very much beyond the basics.
I'd previously used handbrake to rip DVDs to my wife's ipad. When the aspect ratios agree, she's golden. When they don't, she doesn't care since she's used to seeing letterboxing on our TV.
However, I've tried to rip a widescreen movie to my Transformer and see the black bars in the video. I'd assumed since I was ripping a widescreen video to a widescreen device, it would fill the screen. Seeing black bars is no real issue apart from being annoying, so I'm trying to get rid of them.
I've been doing some reading and have tried to play with the anamorphic settings to try and fill the screen out, without any luck.
At this point, I think I'm either missing something very basic, have a fundamental misunderstanding as to how this is supposed to work, or some combination of the two.
I would appreciate and helpful tips or advice anyone might be able to offer.
BTW, I'm using the settings I found here: http://www.ryukent.co.uk/2011/05/asus-eeepad-transformer-handbrake-settings/

my handbreak video displays fine! Try it in rockplayer, not the original stock player and it will strech to aspect properly
The Transformer's aspect ratio is 1280x800px; the standard 16:9 widescreen videos will probably encode (or expand) to 1280x720px - which will leave 40 pixels of unused space (your black bars) at the top and bottom of your screen.
Many players allow you to stretch videos to fill the entire screen (moboPlayer allows this).
Many films are 2.39:1, which would be 1280x535 on the TF which will leave a lot of empty space unless you stretch/crop (neither of which is desirable)....

Depends on the movies. Some movies are 16:9 or (1.78), will others are Cinema Scope (2.35). The 2.35 will always have black bars, even on wide screen. Read the packaging, it should give you the aspect ratio. They are ultra wide. Personally I wish Hollywood would dump 2.35, but it appears to be the trending thing to do. Frankly, I just think they do it to give you a reason to go to a theater.
FYI: It appears the that Automatic crop doesn't work, at least on Blu-Ray mkvs.

Yea, have a movie around that frame height. Im sure i know the answer already, but please confirm.
Its impossinke to stretch/increase the height frame through sofware like handbrake right?
So, you can shrink it, but just cant stretch it or make it bigge, atleast without losing quality...
Thanks

You can stretch it but everything will look very tall and thin - If you like your movies about NBA basketball players that might be fun.
You can crop and then expand the frame but this will lose quality as you are essentially zooming in -- parts on the outside of the frame will be lost.
The black bars are not the fault of the device, they're the fault of the movie industry.

Why does the video record so close?

Am I the only one that notices that you can be taking pictures and the as soon as you switch to video mode the video gets in real close and almost fills in the whole screen. This is crazy and annoying. Is there any way to turn this off? Maybe a setting that fixed this issue?
No, this is a hardware issue.
The answer is in this post:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s7/686490-does-anyone-use-video-stabilization.html
So what we need at least is a frame on screen showing us the exact video frame that will be recorded. Only that way we can aim correctly before pushing the record button.

I did read the ' answer' carefully, but setting the camera to 16:9 is unacceptable and definately not what I meant.
I just mean that I want a (colored?) frame of 16:9 on the display as guideline to show exactly what I will record when I start recording.

Why is it unacceptable? You can still choose to take photos in 4:3. Whenever you want to record video, you have to switch it to 16:9 if you don't want the zooming effect (if you've set it at 4:3, then the phone automatically records in 16:9, hence the zoom) - the phone can only record video in 16:9 aspect ratio, so that's by design. The same goes with other flagship phones like the Nexus 6P and iPhone 6.
And by the way, taking photos in 16:9 gives exactly the same quality as 4:3. The only difference is there is less field of view with 16:9, relatively. Personally, I just set the camera at 16:9 by default. If I really require more field of view (rare instances for me), it's not hard to tap the phone twice to select the 4:3 setting. And because 16:9 is default for me, I don't have to manually change it if I want to record video accurately (without the zooming) etc. It suits me nicely, as I often record video. Furthermore, 16:9 photos take up the full screen on the actual phone, laptop, PC and TV for me, without the need to waste precious time editing.

I prefer to see higher and lower too on my photo's. If I don't need it, I can remove it, but it's impossible to stitch that later on.
So, I should stick with 4:3, but then I will miss the correct frame for video. If you have kids, you should know that switching quickly is very important. What should be easier than to show two lines at the 19:6 position? When video recordging starts, I wouldn't mind if then that frame blows up.
So, for me the current working is weird, annoying and it seems to make it a bit slower. But, let's stop like this, each and every customer has his own thoughts about this and that's ok.
All good. The camera is just for fun for me. Maximum convenience is the theme here. And that's a "set and forget" 16:9 ratio for everything, and I know exactly what's included in the frame when I'm taking it etc. For my purposes, editing photos is a waste of time. I'd rather spend that time actually interacting with the "kids" etc. But totally agree, whatever makes you happy in the end.

Google photos auto-crop to 16:9

So I love my pixel 2 and its google photos integration, I also like how when you take a burst/portrait photo it saves the original under the same photo (you open the photo and the 2 photos are at the bottom.) Now I have been for the longest of time just taking my photos in a 16:9 but with such a good camera I want all the pixels I can, so I switched to 4:3 but I HATE 4:3 so damn much, so my question, how do I save the original 4:3 photo but have a 16:9 photo taken by default too, cropped properly and selected as the `default`?
If you hate 4:3, just change the default to 16:9 in the camera settings? Sorry, I don't think the official google camera app supports dual formats. However, you could probably automate it with something like Tasker. If (new photo detected), send to (photo resizer), for example.

I never thought of tasker, Ill look into this soon, I hate 16:9 but throwing away data seems stupid and poor practice.
Update, I have tasker doing it automatically but since I take landscape and portrait photos this doesnt really work, someone mentioned that I can just offload this work to my pc, which I will do. Will edit this post with tasker info soon
Just wanna ask if anyone here remembers back when phone screens all used the 4:3 aspect ratio? I hate the new 18:9 - it's just too wide for most content viewing.

Dont you always crop the pictures anyway
With 4:3 you have more image vertical, horizontal is the same, so you have more to crop from :good:

This is seriously Crazy by Vivo!!!

Okay this had to be the title for the thread as what i discovered about NEX is seriously crazy.
What i discovered is, that NEX's display can render much better colours both while watching videos and browsing images, but the built AI **** is decreasing the quality of the display by reducing the saturation and a bit of sharpness.
How i discovered this: While i was browsing some 2K videos on NEX youtube app, i watched on video which is a 2K HDR 10 video and it looked completely off on the NEX display. It looked completely greyed out and horribly pale and i right away knew that the built in AI is doing something wrong. So, to further confirm this, i downloaded this app called NewPipe, which streams youtube videos and i saw that the same video which was looking horrible on the stock youtube app is looking really nice on this app. In fact the colours were looking as good as it looked on my Note 8. I was super surprised for a moment as i never thought NEX's display is capable of matching the Note 8's display in terms of colours and sharpness. So, once i was sure that its the AI thats decreasing the saturation of the display while we watch any content using the stock app, i downloaded a Gallery app from play store to check if its doing the same thing to the pictures too and as it turned out, the colours of the same image looked so much more better on that third party gallery app than it did in the stock gallery app.
So, now what i really want to know is, how to switch this AI thing off. If not completely, i want to at least disable it while watching videos and browsing images. I seriously dont know why has Vivo done this, as it is not doing any good to the display. In fact its bringing down the actual performance of the display which would have affected their sales over all. I am sure there would have been people comparing the Note 8 or S9's display to NEX and would have changed their decision based on it and one famous reviewer has compared it against the S9 plus and he clearly says the NEX's display cant match to the S9's, which is not at all the case.
I am super sensitive about colours and i really really happy that NEX can deliver colours as good as my Note 8, which was my only complain. While i am super happy after discovering this, i am equally restless to figure out a way to disable that AI thing on certain apps. You guys too can do this test and see the results for yourself. Let me know if anyone of you can find a solution for this.
Also, attaching comparison pictures of the display colours while using the stock gallery app against using a third party app.

I too noticed this while putting wallpapers on mobile.
From 1st day I am using Google's gallery app i.e. Photos , while pictures looked brilliant in the app but whenever I set a picture as wallpaper , it looks dull.
Second time I noticed it when I saw Avengers on MX player, colors looked bright and punchy where as it's trailer on YouTube looked very dull in comparison.
Exactly!! Hope someone can find a solution for this. Such a shame they are restricting what this phone can deliver.

I did and the colors look much better on the Note 8 and I am sure that the colours on the NEX can also look equally better provided someone finds out a way to turn of the AI thing.
I wish I can unsee it
If you want to really hate the AI, access YouTube in your mobile browser and then switch to request the desktop version. Then set it to a high resolution and look at the stunning quality.
I now seriously hate this AI!
Also just validated ..this is happening with the official and vanced versions of the YouTube app.
Tested:
- I installed older official YouTube apps - same issue
- I installed a few third party YouTube apps - all had beautiful color saturation
Jesus!!
What a mess.
Good that i'm always uninstalling all stock app and replaced them with third party for example for gallery i'm using Google Photo or Quick Pic with all my smartphone.
But must be some kind of spesific services related to AI that should remove via ADB that would be the best solution.

I will be tomorrow with the photos and this forum presented as exhibits. I have been talking to vivo support on an off for the past week, so I suspect it will at least get logged.
I see the same problem. I used ES Explorer and default album with multitask to compare side by side. Really strange ...
I always use the QuickPic Since I got the device , However noticed the Bad quality with YouTube when I attempted to test a Video Playback . Mx player has better performance.
Lets Push Vivo Team to Correct this , There is a separate thread on XDA requesting them to release the source code.
Once they release the Source , I guess these problems will be Easily resolved.
Regards,
H
Also, you guys can use a third party app to set the wallpapers for both desktop and lock screen. It looks so much better when you do that. And if we should reach to Vivo on this. It's shame that their team has not checked on this, which is such a major thing.

Question Videos don't use the entire screen ?

I bought a new phone (iqoo 7) after 3 years. I am not sure if this is an android issue/feature or a phone specific issue. I can't help but notice that while playing videos on twitch, prime, youtube etc. the display doesn't use the entire screen space. A significant part of both the edges is blank and it really bothers me and is not a very good experience while watching a video. If i pinch out and zoom the video to fit to the screen then it because it is zoomed, some parts/edges of the video can't be seen. I am not up to date with mobiles however i used android 8.0 in my previous phone and was always able to use the full screen while watching videos.
Please refer to the attached screenshots.

This happens with 2 different features
The one you're talking about is called fill screen and is specific per app and now a days specific to OEM which app they add in their OS release
The one you have right now is called stretch. It crops the area to fill the screen.
These both things occur differently as per phone as well since some phone screen ratios are 4:3, some have 16:9 and when any video is recorded it varies between these resolutions.

4:3 is unknown of now. Did it ever exist? Idk. 16:9 is out there, but not with newer devices. Most common now for screen ratios is 18:9 and my Pixel 5 is 19.5:9.

Yeah this is kind of a bummer since now a days companies are using different ratios cos of the notch or camera bump.
But this video resolution strictly depends upon the app that you are using to stretch the video.
I prefer mx player in this matter. Try it once if you'd like, it has both options.
