what is the new update today - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Is it just that daft bixby?
It asked for access to EVERYTHING and then only works if you agree to share everything with third parties. That is nuts.

[APP] Autowipe - For those with Froyo

Autowipe is back!
Greetings all,
As most of you probably know, Froyo (2.2) includes new phone wiping abilities. I've been working on an app to take advantage of this new feature and I'm excited to let others see it.
Unfortunately for me, I do not have a Froyo Phone! I am looking for some of you very nice people with N1s or Droids that have 2.2 installed to help me out with testing, as the Emulator can only go so far. Most importantly, I'm interested in seeing if the "Subscriber Id changed" action works when removing/changing SIM cards.
Quick description: Android 2.2 (Froyo)+ includes a new administrator feature. The administrator must be enabled by the user before it can perform its actions. This application focuses on the memory wipe feature of the administrator. If your device gets lost or stolen you can set up this application to automatically wipe the memory in the following conditions: failed passwords to unlock screen, SMS password received, subscriber ID changed (SIM card).
Screenshots and APK attached below.
Thank you very much!
Update 05 March 2011:
* Integrated a Test Mode into the app.
Don't mean to be a downer or anything but isn't this what Mobile Defense and WaveSecure do already?

I don't think that those two programs are updated to work with the admin froyo settings, it's actually what is trying to accomplish.

But neither of those apps are free or are supported outside the US as far as I know.

You can at least set WaveSecure as admin, don't know about Mobile Defense. But still, keep up the work!
i really like this app bro. So when you say wipe, does it restore factory settings? or does it literally wipe everything so that u have to restore via adb or something?
Indeed, my intention is to release it as a free app on the Market to all locations.

Thanks for the compliments. According to the documentation it never specifically says "factory reset" but I'd guess that is what it is doing: Ask the user data be wiped. This will cause the device to reboot, erasing all user data while next booting up.

now that would be nice.... both phone and SD at that. That way if you get someone smart enough to track down how to bring up the bootloader and restoral menus, they won't have anything to work from....
Any update in this project? its really promising. A free alternative to only payed remote wiping software on market.
Keep up the good work bro.
This is an excellent alternative, eh?
Can you please give us a version with "SIM"?
Thanks.

Hello all, sorry I was away for a bit there. Good news, I've just posted a release to the Android Market. I will update the original post shortly.
Search for Autowipe on the market if you can. Feedback would be great! (This version WIPES, it's armed!)
Good work!
Please hide the sms password with ***, add a cursor and perhaps a confirmation with "password set" or something like this.
And most important a test mode would be great. No idea how to test it without wiping hehe

Thanks. I'll add those too, good ideas. I was thinking if you forgot your password you could check back and see it but I suppose you could just delete the asterisks and make a new one.
Thanks again!

I've posted an update with some of the changes requested. The test mode is a taller order so I haven't been able to do that yet.

From the 2.2 Highlights:
Device policy manager
New device policy management APIs allow developers to write "device administrator" applications that can control security features on the device, such as the minimum password strength, data wipe, and so on. Users can select the administrators that are enabled on their devices.

As usual I still don't have an actual 2.2 device so please let me know if I did anything silly, like forget to let you enable the app or something
love it.......
ty for ur hard work
Thank you for contributing, one request. Sdcard wipe too...if someone is smart enough they can restore my phone with a nandroid after it's wiped....if it's a smart thief that is
Sorry if I'm suspicious about all this but with would you need network access for your app?

Clearing Google Market Info

May have been answered before but searching didn't bring anything up for me. Basically I want to clear the data backed up on my Google account regarding Android (WiFi, Market apps, Settings, etc) so I can start again.
Anyone know how to do it?
OK, managed to find somewhere that if you go into your Privacy settings and uncheck the backup option it says it'll delete everything. Is this correct?
Erm I think so eddy I used to untick it when first install and everythibk would be clear
For reference, the above doesn't work. Tried clearing the lot, wiped all data and reflashed my ROM and it still restored my apps, etc...quite annoying really. I mean, its good, but if you wanna start from a clean slate it would seem you can't!
Erm ok soz buddy

That's OK mate! I'll find a way I'm sure
Quick edit: Turning off backup DOES delete settings relating to the phone but NOT the Market. Must be a separate backup which I can't find!
EDIT: OK, sign into your Google Dashboard and you can see what's backed up and when but you CANNOT delete it. Why the hell not?!?!

Hi,
Is it one of those situations where they have you by the short and curlies, and will not let you go?
Maybe the only way is to open a new account?
I seem to remember AOL being the same...
Bloody well hope not! I've emailed Google so we'll see what comes of it but surely if you delete an app it should NOT come back the next time!
On a related note, anyone know why some apps I install are NOT listed under 'My Apps'? I'm guessing it's linked to my account somehow but, again, it's annoying!
Erm depends if they where downloaded from Google it self or if sourced from some where else they won't show up I should know
If u have titanium backup go to
Menu/more/market doctor and it will fix broken links to Google market

Randomly enough, it seems to have worked anyway! It said I may have to 'download any app' to get it up to scratch and, seeing as Superuser needing updating, I did it. It now shows all Market apps in My Apps!
Yh I did it I was playing around and now I have like 20 updates but can't update them.as there ermmmm not from Google

How to disable Whatsapp checking for new versions of the app?

The constant popups are getting kind of annoying. And no, I do not wish to update (Whatsapp or anything) . I like the version that I have right now.
Was wondering if there's any Xposed tweak or something like that?
Thanks.
@unreal25, no, it's even easier than that!
Just follow these instructions, and you're good to go.
Thanks, but you got to be kidding? The updates install in ~0.1 s on my phone. I barely have time to switch to App Info in Settings not to mention click on Force Stop and Confirm.
Also the whole method sounds incredibly suspicious.

I've done my research, and that method has been recommended on no less than four different websites, all of which were forums and the user who recommended it wrote out the instructions themselves.

antivirus software for the S8?

Evening all,
Just a quick question, do any of you use anti virus software for your phones? If so which one?
Running
Your finger works as a great anti virus, here's how to use it, when you download that modded candycrush.apk file from cheatersRus.com and you're asked if you want to install this apk file, select NO. There no virus, 100% guaranteed to work.

So true...
Antivirus apps on a phone are so unnecessary and ends up hurting your experience with your device instead of improving your experience.
Just a bit of common sense goes a LONG way folks...
I don't. I used to run 360 for ram clears and storage cleans, specifically the little widget was nice, antivirus was there but meh. Now that you can use stock ram/storage cleaner + it has a widget. So goodbye 360 for me.
That said, I don't really download any apks unless they are listed here on xda.

Amen, brother, amen. I get so many friends of mine asking me "why is my phone so slow" and I look at it and they've got 9billion games and 4000 tabs open and facebook messenger (anyone running facebook deserves what they get, sorry, i consider facebook stupid to begin with but honestly, no, YOU DON'T HAVE TO OVERSHARE THAT YOU WENT POOP FIVE MINUTES AGO And, NO, your baby IS really ugly, stop posting so many damn pictures of it). I just happily go ahead and delete about 80-90% of the crap they put on their devices and voila, they're "amazed" that it's "faster" no, it's just not as bloated.

Ok ?
I don't download anything unless it's in the play store or here.
I only asked as I was fiddling with the settings on my phone and one of the options for anti virus.
Running
Currently, I'm using Bitdefender and Disconnect Pro.
Disconnect Pro should suffice just fine. Not really an antivirus, but it will prevent ads from popping up (probably the best ad block I can think of without root).
Go to device maintenance, security, and accept the notification that appears.
Intel Security will now actively secure your device. (No need for any AV from the playstore.)
Now, you can use AdHell or DisconnectPro to enable system-wide ad-blocking using the Knox firewall without root. This should avoid most crapware.
Do not download/install anything that prompts you to enable installation from Unknown Sources.
You're now secure.

If you didn't know some malware/viruses are on play store that isn't detected by Google. Can't remember if it was recently but 2 million handsets where infected because of apps on play store especially the dodgy ones

I did not try this, but this may work.
Go to settings -> apps -> click the 3 dot menu and click show system apps -> click Device Maintenance.
Clear the data of the device maintenance app.

I'm REALLY confused, you even write, "especially the dodgy ones" yet, WHY would you download the "dodgy" ones? WHY?
It's sort of like, "Don't stick your hand in the woodchipper" You come running a half-hour later and have no hand screaming, "I stuck my hand in the wood chipper". Well, yeah.

Honestly, if they're downloading from sketchy sites, they deserve what they get. No one should complain if they KNOW better and do worse.

Anti virus apps on mobile systems are useless and pointless. They will never detecty anything on android as the malware on android is not made like PC software nor does it act like it.
The biggest cause for slow devices I find are people being lazy and having tons of folders on their home screen with tons of apps in them. Doing this will slow your system down. Also filling more then 50% device storage will also slow the device down.

Why not just uninstall the update? I never update anything right away ever since Microsoft introduced the "let the users be the testers" philosophy.
Don't get mad at me for saying MS, but that is who I remember. Since then a lot of companies have gotten lazy in their testing departments, and saved tons-o' money to boot!
I can't test this as I don't/won't have the upgrade/problem, just a recommendation (if it's even possible to uninstall the update).
If it is not possible to uninstall the latest update, then that to me is also a major bug!
As a for instance, I installed S9+ Samsung "Themes" and found out that you have to buy everything! What a crock!! What's worse is that I am unable to uninstall Themes - - and THIS is wrong.
Another idea, other than taking away permissions is to use a photo locking/vault app.
Is Disabling it in adhell 3 enough ?
Sms aren't used here anyways so I don't miss it at all.
Are there any downsides of it ? I still have Android messenger from Google installed
maybe due to emergency feature auto sending out, but not triggering by users, properly a bug (or intended)
I just use google messaging app, safer. Still leave the app on for emergency feature with 3 clicks on power button though
