antivirus software for the S8? - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers

Evening all,
Just a quick question, do any of you use anti virus software for your phones? If so which one?
Running

Your finger works as a great anti virus, here's how to use it, when you download that modded candycrush.apk file from cheatersRus.com and you're asked if you want to install this apk file, select NO. There no virus, 100% guaranteed to work.

So true...
Antivirus apps on a phone are so unnecessary and ends up hurting your experience with your device instead of improving your experience.
Just a bit of common sense goes a LONG way folks...

I don't. I used to run 360 for ram clears and storage cleans, specifically the little widget was nice, antivirus was there but meh. Now that you can use stock ram/storage cleaner + it has a widget. So goodbye 360 for me.
That said, I don't really download any apks unless they are listed here on xda.

Amen, brother, amen. I get so many friends of mine asking me "why is my phone so slow" and I look at it and they've got 9billion games and 4000 tabs open and facebook messenger (anyone running facebook deserves what they get, sorry, i consider facebook stupid to begin with but honestly, no, YOU DON'T HAVE TO OVERSHARE THAT YOU WENT POOP FIVE MINUTES AGO And, NO, your baby IS really ugly, stop posting so many damn pictures of it). I just happily go ahead and delete about 80-90% of the crap they put on their devices and voila, they're "amazed" that it's "faster" no, it's just not as bloated.

Ok ?
I don't download anything unless it's in the play store or here.
I only asked as I was fiddling with the settings on my phone and one of the options for anti virus.
Running

Currently, I'm using Bitdefender and Disconnect Pro.

Disconnect Pro should suffice just fine. Not really an antivirus, but it will prevent ads from popping up (probably the best ad block I can think of without root).

Go to device maintenance, security, and accept the notification that appears.
Intel Security will now actively secure your device. (No need for any AV from the playstore.)
Now, you can use AdHell or DisconnectPro to enable system-wide ad-blocking using the Knox firewall without root. This should avoid most crapware.
Do not download/install anything that prompts you to enable installation from Unknown Sources.
You're now secure.

Once Intel Security is enabled, is there any way to disable it again?
Did not find an option for that..
Thanks & best regards!

If you didn't know some malware/viruses are on play store that isn't detected by Google. Can't remember if it was recently but 2 million handsets where infected because of apps on play store especially the dodgy ones

I did not try this, but this may work.
Go to settings -> apps -> click the 3 dot menu and click show system apps -> click Device Maintenance.
Clear the data of the device maintenance app.

I'm REALLY confused, you even write, "especially the dodgy ones" yet, WHY would you download the "dodgy" ones? WHY?
It's sort of like, "Don't stick your hand in the woodchipper" You come running a half-hour later and have no hand screaming, "I stuck my hand in the wood chipper". Well, yeah.

Many people download them if you didn't know. E.g game guides.... that's fine that you don't download these but there are people who do.

Honestly, if they're downloading from sketchy sites, they deserve what they get. No one should complain if they KNOW better and do worse.

M8 we are talking about play store not websites. What's wrong with you people, good for you that you know what sketchy websites are but other people don't e.g older people. Then what's the point of having a antivirus on computer if only you would visit Facebook and not any sketchy websites. So yeah hopefully this shows how stup** ur comment is. Bruhhhh

Anti virus apps on mobile systems are useless and pointless. They will never detecty anything on android as the malware on android is not made like PC software nor does it act like it.
The biggest cause for slow devices I find are people being lazy and having tons of folders on their home screen with tons of apps in them. Doing this will slow your system down. Also filling more then 50% device storage will also slow the device down.

[Q] Install 3rd party apps without rooting?

Hey I was wondering if it was possible to put on apps that I download online and install them on my captivate without rooting.
I know other phones have that check box thing to allow the installation of third party apps, but at&t was stupid and took this off.
I just don't want to root in case I return the phone, because rooting voids the warranty...right? Unless there's a way to unroot the phone and not letting at&t know that I rooted it in the first place...
Thanks

Download the Android SDK and open the tools directory on terminal or the windows equivalent.
Then if you are on a UNIX based system type:
./adb install [location of .apk]
it should then install (note to make sure that you include a / before the file path
eg: /android/apks/app.apk vs. android/apks/app.apk
on a windows pc type:
adb install [location of .apk]

He mentioned apps he would normally pay for. That made me think he was talking about pirating.
Well you're both kind of correct.
I know how to find the paid apps, it's just that I don't know how to install them. I'm not sure what those slideme apps are, so I'm not talking about that. I just mean apps that are on the market, but I don't want to pay for them.
Maybe sideloading is the answer...I thought that required rooting, but I'll go look into that. I'll look into the Android SDK thing later too, I just have been avoiding that because I was reading about it earlier and it looked long and confusing.
edit: ok so I'm under the impression side loading is for 3rd party apps, ie apps not sold/offered in the android market, which is not what I'm looking for.
Unless of course this method works with paid apps too?

It does still work with paid apps. I do not know where you find those though.
A word of caution though. Not only is pirating paid apps illegal, it is also just plain wrong. People can argue that pirating music is ok, so I wont go into that. However, applications require hours upon hours of the developers time and effort, so pirating the app is on par with stealing.

Web Attacks from Advertisers?

No sooner did I open the Inspire 4G page on my PC when Norton 360 notifies me that I'm getting a "web attack" from "www.zarbellot.com/6545S5/53Z355" (212.95.55.179, 80)
The first alert was named "Web Attack: Exploit Kit Variant Activity"
The second alert was named "Web Attack: Malicious Toolkit Webside 8"
Get rid of Norton. Problem solved.
Honestly though, I have no idea what you're talking about.
I have Norton as well, and NEVER that kind of message. Looks like ur system is already infected, and is peeking out when u access this page.
By the way, I am not sure there are ads on this site in the first place. I don't remember ever seeing one. And I don't see any cross site scripting either.
@rotchcrocket04: OOPS about that thanks.

As expected, nothing found in 367397 objects except for a single "false positive" in HKCU for start_showhelp.

Plenty of ads from our favorites: zedo.com, doubleclick.net, atdmt.com, etc. (visible with IE, FF, and chrome)
The most insidious ones are sitting between thread replies, and they disable the mouse-wheel scroll function when you mouse-over the ad.

HTC_security_log_provider manual update from verizon

Verizon pushed an update to fix a problem I was having with a false security alert indicating I had a virus or malware. This process HTC_security_log_provider has helped me greatly. The HTC rep mentioned they will probably be including this in new builds so that they are able to get access to resolve issues like I was having quickly without manual update every affected user . Apparently it is a huge problem but mine is working now thanks to HTC_SECURITY_LOG_PROVIDER!
sounds like htc wanting more access to our phones. Security log? I haven't had any "security" alerts (false or otherwise) and have not read about any either.
Interesting 1st post.
The OP wouldn't have a problem if they weren't downloading things they shouldn't. Just saying that 99.9% of the chances you actually had something on your phone, it did not come from a credible source (like the market). I'd rather htc and verizon be fiddling directly with my phone.
It wasnt an actual virus or malware. I was getting an alert and this is the solution they used to stop the nag message. I have not downloaded anything unless from the market. Obviously I know there could be issues with non market downloads. I also am glad that HTC/verizon is messing with it instead of me having a headache of a nag message all the time.

Nag message like something in your status bar? Google recently added the ability to do that in the sdk for apps.
It was almost like a FC that they said was due to something with how the kernel security log communicates with the UI. IM not an expert and it may have something to do with the new SDK your mentioning. IM not sure. I was just trying to let you guys know about the update.
I wouldn't believe Verizon for a second. Heck, they can't even figure out at tech support why their IVR says you can reactivate a 4G SIM within 90 days...

That is true that Market apps can cause issues like viruses and all but it seems pretty obvious when an app has the ability to infect a phone. If you see an app that is normally paid and this version is free and in chinese then it's probably no good lol.

OCD: Anyway to clean up old apps that still show insalled on Google Play webite?

I guess from years of rooting and changing roms and such the Google Play website shows hundreds of apps installed on my device that of course aren't.
By using Google Play on my phone and going to ALL I was able to painfully manually delete many of them but after a certain point it stops loading very old apps and no longer gives me an option to remove them from the list resulting in the website showing wrong results.
I Googled a solution but found nothing anyone here have any ideas?

I've often wondered this as well. It'd be nice if the store would only display 90 days of download recency. It'd be even better if you could sub-cat the downloads by device (if you've had multiple).

There should be an option within the Store to sync the device you're on @ that time and show what's been installed/uninstalled from Play Store for that specific device.

I don't know who that's directed to but I have ocd and don't see anyone making light of it.
Anyway I don't even mind removing apps one by one but it seems after you go back several years time (on your phone mind you under ALL) it stops loading very old apps and there is just no way to remove them at that point.

OK I apologise then. I thought YOU were making light of OCD. You know, the whole "If I don't do xxx then I will die" kind of OCD (of which I am sure you know, there is no other). I'm sorry to hear you have that. My suggestion would be not to visit the play website. It's definitely preferable to feeling you will die because it is untidy.
Although the way you phrased this thread, it reads more like "I like things tidy" than actually having OCD, so again I apologise
No problem. It's not like this is keeping me up at night but it is something that has been on my min d to fix for sometime.

Malware Pop Up - OK

I just visited this forum form my Nexus 5 and a pop up stating that I had malware appeared. It said if I wanted to remove it. I was gonna click 'NO', then I thought "Well, this is xda-developers..." so I... pressed 'YES'.
Nothing happened. Closed the tab and nothing seems to have happened. Did I install malware? Did I get an infection of any kind?
Thanks.

If you are using custom Rom, it likely has a modified hosts file that blocks redirection from ads and nothing just happened.
did it take you to another page out of xda? do you have new icons on the home screen? if so, download Airpush detector and run it. it will detect fake apps
I dont think anything installed on your phone unless you saw something downloading. It was an advertisement looking for click or to sell you a fake antimalware solution.

well done. extra safety is always better.
It's one of those stupid popup adverts that - when it works - takes you to a page pretending to do a scan, then says something like "We found 247 viruses on your phone! Install Dave's Antivirus 2014 to remove them!"
I expected more of XDA.
