Unfortunately the SC-03J has a Snapdragon chipset which isn't currently rootable
Exynos variants are the only ones you'll be able to root.

Half correct. I dont know about the Japanese version, but HK/China Snapdragons are likely to get rooted at some point.
What's for sure is Samsung locks the bootloader of its Snapdragon S8 in the US and Canada. So indeed these variants most likely wont ever be rooted.

Japanese phones are usually heavily locked down. I remember 2-3 years ago there was a lock on top of a locked bootloader, on top of an 'unrootable' ROM/device called a 'Miyabi' lock - 3 locks. Not too sure if things have changed.

Can every versision of the Galaxy S7 be rooted?

In Canada it seems they always have the versions that can't have boot loader unlocked or root. Are there any versions/editions of the S7 (or edge) that cannot be rooted?
There are some dirty hacks for the US phones but the rest can be rooted/recovery installed.

Thanks so much for reply. So to double check, if I get a carrier branded S7 Edge in Canada I should be able to root it? I had bad experience with other phones like this.

You'll be fine, only the US ones have locked bootloaders.

Can all versions of the Galaxy S7 get root?

Can all versions of this phone get root and custom recovery (like TWRP)? I've had other phones where this was not possible because I happened to have one were bootloader can't be unlocked. Is there a chance I get this phone and it can't be rooted? I'm in Canada.
The US snapdragon phones have locked bootloaders, the canadian exynos ones are unlocked and can attain root/recovery easily.

Is it possible for US ones to get root?
Yes but you have to flash an eng kernel which can be buggy and suffer battery loss.

Yes its also locked, only think unlocked about that phone is the ability to use it on various carriers.

Thanks for the advice. I bought the 930F instead. I have it rooted. Now looking at Xposed ...

Any reason not to get the carrier version of s7 if installing a custom rom?

I use Straight Talk (AT&T sim) in the US. I am looking to get a phone I can install a custom rom on. (Still researching which rom). Since the carrier-specific models of the S7/edge are about $100-200 less used, is there any reason NOT to get a carrier specific model?
Since I'm installing a custom rom, all carrier bloatware would be gone. Wouldn't this effectively be the same as the unlocked model, maybe without international capabilities which I probably wouldn't need anyway.
Is the AT&T model the only one that would work on Straight Talk (AT&T sim)? I'm looking for the cheapest variant that will work.
Thank you.
Some may have a locked bootloader making it impossible to flash TWRP / Custom ROMs

There aren't any, you need the canadian or international s7 if you want roms, all american phones have locked bootloaders, there's a half assed root for it but that's it.

The unlocked part refers to its ability to be used on any carrier, nothing to do with the bootloader, its still locked like all the other snapdragon phones.

Ahhhh....it boils down to the chipset. So the G930F with Exynos looks to be what I want for running a custom ROM.
Bingo.

The right questions? Galaxy J7 SM-J727U

So i just dont know if im looking for the right stuff or what..
Id like a rootable ROM for debloat and performance reasons.
I have a Galaxy J7 SM-J727U..
Just got it from the store and i can find barely any info on this Model.
Does it have a different name? or just no development for this device?
Thank you
I've got the same phone, and I'm in the same situation. I've got 15 days to return it if I can't find a viable root option, but it seems decent for the price. I've gone through a lot of the steps for trying to root similar models, and in every case I simply can't flash anything with Odin. It gives the error "secure check failed". Everything I've looked into about this seems to point to the "OEM unlock" option under developer options, which this phone doesn't seem to have. I would also love to know if there's any potential for progress on this. I'm willing to put in some research and testing, and I'll let you know if I find anything anywhere else.
The U usually stands for UNLOCKED(as in any network/carrier)
Does not necessarily mean the bootloader is unlocked which is likely if the result is 'secure check fail'
What are the specs of this device and country of origin?
Anyone please say the exact CPU used in ths model. SM-J727U.

That's wrong, sorry. I saw one of the YouTubers Boost Mobile variant (J7 Perx) of SM-J727 with installed Snapdragon 625. I've sent this question to the Samsung support in Twitter, they've confirmed my suspicion of the Snapdragon-based US device. But I was unsure. And here I am completely sure of Snapdragon 625 inside J7 2017 US version.

It was my understanding he is in Ukraine, and there the j727u is the Exynos model, as is the US j727u. The j727p and t models use the snap dragon chips

Yes I am the Ukrainian resident, and her we can obtain the SM-J730F. This is a real Exynos 7870 device. But yours J727U might have a different one.
EDIT: One of the users said that there is indeed Samsung Exynos 7870 inside the unlocked model. Meh. From the wompshmack's post the Download Mode looks to be verifying the signatures.
I have a J7 that is SM-S727LT. I can't find anything on that either

A bit offtopic, but there also is the SM-J727S model, which is the Samsung Wide 2 (or J7 for Souh Korea, sold by the SK Telecom carrier), there is TWRP for it. The CPU is also Exynos 7870.
Theoretically the same rootmethod can be used. Can anyone test?

unlock s7

Hi, I came from S4 and teted several Roms. Can I unlock the S7 so easy too?
Unlock what? Carrier, bootloader, or root?
I want to install custom rom CM15 or similar. On my S4 I had TWRP. How can I install it on S7?
Which version of the s7 do you have? I think the Verizon and AT&T versions have a locked bootloader.
Not just Verizon and AT&T, all US models. Sprint, carrier unlocked, etc.

Thank you for the information. So only Exynos versions have unlocked bootloaders?
I believe there's a chinese snapdragon variant that is the only exception, otherwise yes just Exynos.
